Great review, Ed! I read BTF in 2021 and loved it. It's good to see more readers checking out Buehlman's work. I've always felt that Booktube has been oddly mixed on this book, but you're right that it gets a lot of love on reddit, especially on horrorlit. It really is that great and I agree with you on everything about it. Total Berserk/Dark Souls vibes for me. The only thing I've read since that's even come close to that style of atmosphere is Hellmouth by Giles Kristian, which I wish had been a full novel. I still haven't read The Blacktongue Thief, but I do recommend his two vampire novels. The Lesser Dead is quite good, and The Suicide Motorclub is a solid story in its own right. I do really enjoy Buehlman's prose, and I think he especially has a talent for writing great dialogue. Sweet gauntlets, by the way! Truth and Courage!
I always love hearing you talk about a book you love, Ed, and this one sounds like I'd appreciate it too. I also feel like I should read Berserk. But what I really want to know is this: How did you press the "record" button while wearing those gauntlets?
Ed has a way of making my TBR pile grow... and he's done it again here with Between Two Fires and Beserk. Hahah, that's the question we all need the answer to! Will
Love the outfit Ed, your dedication is astounding! The Daughter's War is super high on my tbr, but this book sounds so good too. I'll be reading The Daughter's War first, but I'll definitely be trying this one if I like that!
This is just how Ed dresses on a normal Monday afternoon..... We have a review for The Daughter's War coming out at some point soon! In short.... we loved it. Hope you pick it up soon :). Will
Excited to check out Buehlman next year! Also a bit funny, as I just watched the Paul Verhoven 80s Historical Military/Adventure movie “Flesh+Blood”, which Kentaro Miura (Mangaka of “Berserk”) mentioned as a big visual reference for the series! Can definitely recommend you Clark Ashton Smith’s (often considered the third leg of the Three Greats of the “Weird Tales” pulps, together with Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard) short stories as a good mix of Action/S&S, historical Fiction and Horror: Personally I really love his “Zothique” setting (S&S/Horror set on a Brutal and Decadent Far Future Dying Earth with magic and Bronze Age Tech), but this reminded of his “Averiogne” setting (Historical Horror, set in a Fictional French Medieval Province)! Virtual all his short stories, including his “Poseidonis” (S&S/Horror set on the Bronze Age final colonies of Atlantis) and “Hyperborea” (S&S/Horror set on Pre-Ice Age Lost Civilization) settings, are available for free online though the “Dark Eldritch” site! Cheers Ed, also enjoying “Fury of the Gods” so far! 😄
Oooh I just read this book last August! I honestly didn't think I would like it at all; Christian good vs evil-y religion heavy books aren't really my thing, but my friends who love both horror and fantasy heard about this one and thought to give it a try; so I buddy-read it with them, and it turned out to be a surprisingly awesome read for me as well. The final clash did feel a bit rushed, but the ending itself was very satisfying. Our only regret was that we didn't wait until October to read it haha. I'll need to check out more of Buehlman's works myself. I've only read this one and Black-Tongue Thief so far.
Is the armour a reference to the time period the book is set in, or is this just how Ed dresses on his downtime? Or is it the level of protective clothing that's required to be a primary school teacher these days? Either way, the book sounds awesome, will have to check it out!
I love when fantasy and horror is combined.
Two genres that complement each other so well!

Love Between Two Fires. The Feast scene and the part in Paris with the statues have stuck with me for months since I read it.
"The Lesser Dead" is a hidden horror gem from C. Beuhlman.
Another one for our list! Thanks for the recommendation :).

Just recently read Between Two Fires myself. I thought it was great. Very historically accurate as well.
So glad you loved it. After hearing Ed's love, I need to pick it up ASAP...

Zamil Akthar's Gunmetal gods and its sequel Conqueror's blood I would definitely suggest for Middle Eastern inspired Fantasy and Lovercraftian Horror.
See I just looked up the title and got your video suggested and now after your dedicated review (love the fit btw) im Definitely picking it up!
