Carina Round deserves far more props as a member of Puscifer than most here are giving. She is an incredible artist in her own right and brilliant with Maynard.
Carina is a major part of Puscifer's sound- without her it wouldn't be Puscifer. Then again- without any member of the band it wouldn't be Puscifer- just as without any member of Tool or Perfect Circle it wouldn't be them- each member contributes their signature style and sound and it all meshes together to form a very original sound- you always know it's them within seconds of hearing whatever song it is. This- imo- is part of what makes all of the bands he's in- we shouldn't call them "his band's" - so good. He knows how to surround himself with other musicians that are just as advanced and talented as he is.

"She is an incredible artist in her own right" YES! I say it on every comment section. The number of people who acknowledge she's amazing VS the number of views on her solo music is criminal. More people need to listen to her outside of Puscifer. In an interview Maynard calls her his twin, something about assholes of the same circumference, you know Maynard. But it's true, it becomes obvious why they work so well together when you listen to her stuff. I think any easy listen for Maynard fans is this live version of her song "Motel 74": ua-cam.com/video/TRuC-jN5LHM/v-deo.html You'll know by 1min in. Hopefully YT will give you "07-Elegy" and "08-Slow Motion Addict" on the side bar. The 1-2-3 combo is intense.

The key to that line is in the next when he says “sum of all and by them driven…”
As in he is inclined to climb mountains and try to cross rivers etc (ie challenge and better himself) by the combination (sum) of his personality (nature), the way he was raised (nurture), his spiritual beliefs (heaven) and where he is from (home).

I feel the message of this song is very clear. Its a lesson in humility. Most of the song is this man almost bragging about his accomplishments. He's faced earthquakes, winds, and fire by himself. He's conquered mountains and the forests. He's conquered his country, become king all of it on his own. Yet this river he speaks of is unconquerable. No matter how many times he tries he can't cross it. He speaks out to a higher power and is taught not everything can be done alone. In order to cross the river he needs to put his pride aside join hands with his fellow people and together in humility they are able to cross the river. Its a deep song, but not as deep as alot of people like to make it out to be
This was my discovery of Puscifer. I first heard it in a commercial for a Transformers video game. One of my favorite bands ever since. They have so many great songs.

When my dad died I carried his coffin into the church while people were performing a Haka (which absolutely killed me). I then carried him out to this song. He was a marathon runner, outdoors kinda guy, we never really bonded until it was too late but we bonded over this song. He knew his time was coming and this song really spoke to him.

"Nature, Nurture, Heaven, and Home" is essentially calling out everything that has gone into making him who he is: his genes, his upbringing, divine influence, and environment.
He isn't just citing accomplishments. He's saying that these are the elements of his life that he's relied on to accomplish all that he has. Indeed, every aspect of him (and each of us) is attributable to these factors.
And in spite of it all, he has met an obstacle that he can't overcome. At least, not on his own.
I can’t believe how good of a writer MJK is. I can’t think of a more self aware person that can poetically put his words into music like he can. It’s ridiculous.

Seems like anything Maynard gets his claws into, turns to gold. He's such a great writer and frontman. This has a very haunting sound to it. Exactly what I expect from Maynard. A Perfect Circle covers John Lennon's 'Imagine.' It has the same sort of vibe to it. So does 'The Noose'... You guys should do THAT one next! ✌

LOVE The Noose, as a former addict that one hits me.
Maynard says he has never been addicted to hard drugs but he really tells the story from the perspective of an addict, especially on Thirteenth Step in an extremely genuine sounding way, maybe because he has been close to addicts enough to see some of the things that those who haven't had the experience do not easily notice or consider.
Sang from the perspective of a still-using addict running into a former friend or partner who is now in treatment and sober, reborn and looking down on those still using, asking the question how are they going to make amends with those who they had harmed in the past due to their addiction, pointing out their hypocrisy when they tell the stories of their past as if it were someone else's atrocious story, begging forgiveness yet still trying to distance themselves from the consequences of their actions or not completely learning the lesson they should have.
The song Gravity is like the perfect closer to that record and chapter of APC, to me it's about basically relapsing after completing a 12 step program because there was no 13th step and saying "I am high, I am surrendering to the gravity of my addiction", giving up on their recovery and just letting go.

I actually think this is one of the songs he did with the most clear and to the point message.
One of the beautiful nuances of this song that I didn't see mentioned (also I didn't read every comment) is how the song builds with the lyrics. It starts very minimal as he tells of all his accolades that he accomplished alone but builds instrumentality as he comes to the realization that it takes a village. I personally believe that is the low key component that makes this song as powerful as it is

Conquering the self is the biggest battle... It is the great work which is simple enough for a child to understand but takes a lifetime to master. Learning humility, subduing of one's passions, and loving and accepting others to move forward. All these works are masked and trivialized by ego.
The Humbling River is an amazing song. I am glad to see you both go over the song.
Puscifer is my favorite band. They have a lot of different sounding songs. Lots of MJK’s music is very spiritual. This band has carried me through so many hard times. Humbling River is beautiful. I always come back to this song, as it reminds me I can’t do it all alone. I really enjoyed listening to what you had to say about it. Thanks for sharing! 💛

I know there is a live version of "Country Boner" with "Hildy" from the 90s and he is in his white-haired cowboy getup.

I saw it as him growing up without accepting Jesus, lived his whole life.And now is standing at an insurmountable river trying to move to whatever his afterlife will be. This river forces you to baptise yourself with the community of other lost souls, and accept that Jesus was The answer before you reach the gates.
I think Rivers and streams have always been associated with tranquility and peace and all that this man has accomplished has been in spite of peace and tranquillity which is why he has such a hard time crossing the river which creates a humbling sense. I presume inner peace is on the other side of the river.
I can appreciate and am reminded of an old quote “you can never cross the same river twice, you are never the same man and it’s never the same river”. Maybe unrelated to this song but it’s a good one.
@@benkelly7182 I certainly do think it's related for multiple reasons. That is the beauty of music and especially Maynard's music. It is left open to interpretation, to fit personally into our lives. Life is about change and progression and not wading in stagnant waters.

@@Dithernoise their first few records are more mixtapes and remixes. The traditional style of records really come about around Conditions of my Parole. That record and everything afterwards are amazingly experimental. A few tracks I absolutely love are Man Overboard, The Weaver, Dear Brother, Life Of Brian, and Theorem. Those tracks hit my ‘weird but still jams’ funny bone.
'The Arsonist', to me, is the perfect Puscifer song.
This is one of my favs from puscifer! They aren’t that heavy of a colab ..’The Remedy’ is a good one to ..has the harmony w Carina again. There is ‘Condition of my parole’ ..a lil heavier! Endjoy! 😎🤘🏻

I've always thought of The River as "Death" in this song (Lost Loved ones) The protagonist in the song has conquered all there is in life except the Reality of someone's Death. "Open your heart and hands, my son
Or you'll never make it over the river" to me is a word of advice to someone who may be grieving or depressed. We all feel humbled when someone important to us is lost. Great reaction though, never expected to see this song on the channel!
@Moose X in Greek mythology, there's the river Styx which is part of the underworld, and has the famous ferryman. I've always felt this song alluded to the Styx and embracing death.

The River is mentioned in John Bunyon's A Pilgrim's Progress that Christian had to cross to make it to the Celestial City.

The message is very clear to me. None of us can make it on our own. No matter what material possessions we have, no matter what our stature is in life, no matter how powerful we believe ourselves to be.. we all need help. That help comes in many different forms from person to person.

I've been a fan of Maynard's creative endeavors for decades now, and this is a great song, I like hearing your interpretations of the songs even though I may disagree with some of your conclusions. I also like that you present different ways of interpretating the songs that I might not have thought of.
Puscifer is eclectic, they have "folky" songs like this one, and heavier stuff as well. Some song suggestions of theirs that you may consider reacting to are Telling Ghosts, Indigo Children, Smoke and Mirrors, Bread and Circus, Horizons, The Rapture, to name a few.

Probably the most underrated front man of all time. Maynard is awesomely under appreciated IMO. I love Tool, APC, and Puscifer. This is one of my favorite songs. Thanks guys!

Spot on pointing out how open to interpretation this song is. Far from what his meaning is, but I personally relate to this song picturing a combat veteran that has overcome so many unbelievable struggles, and achieved so many things, but can't bring himself to come home... emotionally and mentally, that is. Something so simple, after going off to war, as going home and carrying on with life seemed like such a simple task that you just can't understand why you never truly return home.

Puscifer- Horizons ….. it’s a musical journey with a lot of meaning
One of my favorite reactions to any song. Great analysis and receptiveness to this song. From how MJK has challenged religion (meaning his attempts to understand it, its place in personal life, and its place in society), I've leaned on its meaning to try and accept faith. Trying to suggest you can navigate and be successful in life but still denied acceptance among a faith. Then, trying to find a way to overcome that feeling
Please do "The Patient" by Tool. There's definitely a spiritual slant to that song that should be explored.
Yes! Songs like "Wings for Marie" and "Thomas" are some of my favorites for reasons like that. "The Patient" is a very beautiful, dark, and interesting song.

This person is the sum of and drivin by the nature he grew up in, the nurturing he got as a child, from heaven and from his home.
I first heard this song while first playing dark souls. Man those two go so well together. The impossible river meet the impossible game!

This song definitely brings you to a good place.
Maynard explores ancient folk songs… native tribes… the lyrics lend themself to the tribal drumming. I love this song. I especially love the strings and children’s voices that enter later.
I initially dismissed puscifer as mediocre and the strings/vocals sound great.

You should watch the animated video for Horizons by Puscifer. 1st time I saw/heard it was the night my dad had passed on. It helped me so very much during that time.
I would recommend Grand Canyon and Horizons as other songs to check out by this band. Momma Sed is another good choice since you've already delved into the songs about Maynard's mother.

I heard this song for the first time on the tv show "Yellowstone" and immediately loved it. I saw this video and had to check it out.
one of the things i love the most about mr maynard is how his words can be interpreted in many ways. The humbling river might be gods wrath, or have a christian spin to it in some way, might not. a lot of things probably go into this mans writing process, so it is fun to watch people come from way out of left (or right) field with their own slant on the meaning....... rev 22:20 is a good song too.
Never heard of this band before, but this track sounded so so good! Like others are saying, the atmosphere was so cool. Gave me a very fantasy, epic, adventure LOTR vibe.

Check out another underrated gem from this brilliant band - "Dear Brother"
This song gives me the chills maybe more than any other song and was one of the songs that broke my resistance to liking Puscifer, also the song Breathe, which for some weird reason gives me anxiety and sorta turns me on in a weird way that slightly disturbs me lol.
I was/am a huge Tool fan since the mid 90's but when I first heard Puscifer it didn't click for me, there were some things I heard in their music I liked but I had like some blockage in my brain that wouldn't allow me to fully embrace them, it was a little too out there and weird but now they are one of my top 5 bands.
A Perfect Circle hit me in a similar way but clicked a little faster and easier than Puscifer, it took listening to Mer De Noms all the way through.
The "catchy" parts of most of Maynard's bands' music are not "easy", it takes a little patience, when you "relax" your mind and listen to it again and again you start hearing the different layers you missed before that are lower in the mix, you hear the beat from a different "angle" then the catchy hooks will "pop out" like a magic eye puzzle, where it looks like a blob on a page but when you relax your eyes a certain way the hidden 3D image becomes visible to you.
MJK is a dang musical genius, like for real.
