He isn’t blaming God on not providing miracles. He’s criticizing religious people for relying on “Thoughts and Prayers” instead of doing something themselves. It’s a jab at people, not God.
The Washington Pundit Thank you! So much of this argument starts from a wrong place, it isn’t about “God” or even Christians, it is about the people who hide behind these concepts. Without doing squat. That’s it. I do watch these videos, mostly because they are coming from their stance (which for me are quite alien tbh) and they do try, mostly with what I take as good intentions.
Maynard can be quoted in saying that this album is very political - it is an observation and report on modern society, and I'll use America's gun control/shootings problems - a school gets shot up, kids die and the global leaders start their public addresses with "Our thoughts and prayers go out to..." but the words are hollow - the leaders have the power to enact change in regulations and laws, but don't and won't for fear of losing their supporters. Their words, their thoughts and prayers are as useful as cake in a crisis...

@@johnnyblue9120 To a point - he's calling out the pious who claim to be honourable and sincere, like Jesus, but don't follow any of the characteristics they claim to hold dear. Religious organizations are the obvious example, as is politics and realistically any organization that we put in a position of authority based on what they "preach".
I just don't think that labelling this song as a shout out to religious hypocrites does it justice. It's selling it short of the wider target - any hypocrite that we look to for leadership.

I like your final analogy. My understanding is this:
MJK isn't conforming to the christian faith, and certainly isn't CLAIMING to. But those who get in his way, do so whilst wielding their faith as a weapon. He grabs that weapon and shows it for what it truly is; dead. He is free to critique without partaking. He never criticised the bible, he criticised those who falsely swear by it.

This song is 100% written because of the reaction from politicians sending thoughts and prayers but refuse to act. Fantastic song and Maynard is so powerful with his message.

It's clearly about the American gun worship culture and how "Christians" pray for change while supporting the very thing ending innocent lives. It also seems hypocritical to support instruments of death and then put it in the hands of god when blood is shed. It shouldn't even be a question in a real Christian's mind that something needs to be done

That was my impression also... "while you deliberate, bodies accumulate" - makes me think of gun laws and mass shootings. I think of the song as a jab toward Republicans and their pseudo Christianity.

Guns don't have to go away. But putting in better checks on the weapons would help reduce gun violence. There's no reason the CDC should be forbidden from being able to study gun violence and mass shootings, and there's no reason there shouldn't be background checks for these pieces of very dangerous machinery.
"Guns won't ever go away" and "people are the problem" doesn't mean there's no point in putting in some basic safety checks into the system.

@@AR-vd3pb This song has a great message and it is really going right over your head. I support the second amendment, don't want to get rid of guns but I do recognize that there are unique problems with what we are doing in this country and why we lead the the world in mass shootings. I do favor reasonable gun reforms and actually many, if not most, NRA members realize that people on the terrorist watch list should not get guns (the NRA opposes this). They tend to favor that every gun transaction should be subject to a background check because mentally ill people if they can't get them from a gun dealer can freely get them from another gun dealer (the NRA opposes this).
Then there is the argument of how lethal does a weapon platform have to be in order to be banned from society? I think some firearms cross the barrier which I think is acceptable and some add ons (bump stocks) also jump this barrier. Therefore, I do actually favor getting rid of them.
There is a reason why other nations don't have this problem and part of this is our dangerous mix of our culture and easy access to guns.

This is an overly simplified response, but you do not have to be religious, or even spiritual to have a moral compass, or love, or compassion. I want to say more, but I have work. Thay said, thanks for doing this song.
also many religious people have a horrible moral compass, show little love or compassion and often times are aggressive towards "non believers".
The history is full of religious violence, war, hatred and oppression.
EDIT: i would even go as far and say a good part of the wars and violence in our history was caused by religion in the first place.
I rarely see people making that argument anyways. The problem isn't if a non-religious person can have strong morals, but what the basis or justification is for those morals. If Christianity is true, and given its influence on societies, it's only natural that the moral law is accessible to everyone, even if most don't embrace the implications or source of that law.

but it isn't. most other cultures would disagree with Christianity on most moral issues. and even individual Christians nitpick the rules they agree with, and drop those they consider "Out dated".
So the majority of the human race including many Christians, would NOT agree with the Christian laws about morality. especially today, since even most Christians don't life the religion by the book. because it is full of "out dated" laws.
Nor do you need to be religious to understand the definition of hypocrisy. And if you can understand the definition you can spot it when it's happening, morals or not.
Look at history, religion is the thing that most brings misery and death to people.. Religious people are the last people to talk about peace and compassion
Always keep in mind MJK's overall intention with his lyrics in all bands. He's someone who believes in offering something for listeners to take and use, change, adapt, whatever. Do with it what you wish as long as it helps you or others. Use it for something positive. He may push that more with Tool but it shows up in all his work. If you can listen to this song and decide to change and start helping others, then he did his job. That's the point. With Tool he pushes "Think for yourself. Question authority."
This is maybe one of the best descriptions of Maynard's writing I've seen yet.
I wouldn't use "Judith" in comparison. That was 20 years ago in the man's life and he seems to have undergone some changes since then. Most artists/musicians/etc. produce their craft that shows where they are at that point in time. This song is where he is now as a person. I saw it as the empty words of "Thoughts and Prayers" by our elected officials whenever some tragedy happens. "While you deliberate, bodies accumulate" to me was how these officials never do anything about said events and act like they never happened once the "Thoughts and Prayers" were sent out on their social media platforms. He's just calling them out as you said. You claim to care, but never act when you have the authority to do so. Please don't take this as hating or anything like that. I really do enjoy your videos.

Yes I agree, This album "Eat the Elephant" defiantly has some strong political views in a lot of the songs in the album. Some very subtle and some in your face. I don't think this is a dig at Christians at all, but more leaders and politicians and their fake hypocritical views they express over media and social media.
I think Maynard in all three of his bands could give you a great basis for teaching scripture. "Humbling River" by Puscifer or "46&2" by Tool would be great songs to check out. Great video guys keep it up!

Hey, you're almost there. Bare in mind that Maynard went through a journey of growth and seeing God/Christianity situation as it is.
So this song pretty straightforward hints at the political/spiritual situation.
Thoughts and prayers are used by politicians/fake Christians in hardships like catastrophies, tornadoes, deaths.
*Like cake in crisis* might refer to Mary Antoinette when the people were furious cuz they couldn't find any bread to eat so she said "ok let them eat cake" which caused the french revolution.
When he said faith without works.. he points here towards false Christians... The hypocrites that hurt him and his mother (remember Judith?)

My point was that he is still accountable before God for his blaspheme in Judith. God doesn't have a "statute of limitations" on crimes against His name. Apart from Christ he will pay the penalty. Not to mention I've been reading about him and the only change has been a reduced anger in his presentation but he rejects Jesus just as much today as he did then. Hopefully this changes at some point. Praying for him.

He does state genesis 1:1 when it is actually John 1:1 I believe. But the intentioned logic is sound. MJK rarely involves god in his lyrics. He is writing about people
Robert Houghton I would suggest listening to the song again and looking up interviews from Maynard himself about it. It sounds like you truly don’t understand the point of what he is saying and you are assigning something to does not belong to him. He was going through a lot at the time of the writing and was talking a lot about the people around him at the time, as other commenters have stated.
If you reach a conclusion without all the facts you will, unfortunately, be wrong a lot of the time.

Pretty sure that song is about being a spotter in a 2 man sniper team.
The whole band has a strong finger on the pulse of the nation. From a feeling of wanting something more, denial of totalitarian systems of thought and religion, denying of absolutes, and unforgiveness for hypocrisy. Their song The Doomed pitches the meaninglessness of the beatitudes to a world if God or Christ did not exist... really loving your series - you're inspiring me to do the same :)
First of all I'm agnostic. Second I'd like to tell you atrue story. When I was in my early 20s I was coming home from work, and there was an old man that looked like he'd been hit by a car, twisted up lying in the street. People were ignoring his body and just driving around him. I don't know how long his aparent corpse had been there before I showed up , but it doesn't matter. 70% of those people considered themselves good christians statistically. If there's a hell all of those "good christians" are burning in it, because not one of them stopped. I stopped. Keep your prayers, just get out of my way.

As a non religious person, I can say what you are doing here is awesome. Love your content and I do listen to your musical "sermon" after the song.
I'm right there with you man. Their sermons give me a lot of perspective on how I view things and act personally. At least once in every one of their videos I have that "Ohhh I'm a hot, bag of garbage" moment. I'm definitely glad these guys are doing this.
I think that it’s fair to look at a Christian and use the standard by which they are supposed to live as a standard by which to judge the quality of their actions. The argument that an atheist is a hypocrite for holding up the standard you claim to live by and saying “but you aren’t” doesn’t mean they are hypocrites, it means they are genuinely confused and appalled that you, who so publicly espouse values and the fear and awe and love of God don’t actually seem to live up to those values.
If I said to everyone “I’m a pacifist” and made t shorts and a huge deal about it and voted for and donated to politicians who public ally vote and support war, it’s okay for someone that agrees with the idea of going to war to judge me based on my lack of adherence to my own stated philosophy.

The atheist conveniently ignores the fact that the scriptures say do not judge, lest ye be judge, for the judgement you put on others will also be put onto you. Take care of the log in your own eye before you point out the thorn in your brothers eye. So in fact they are not fairly applying a Christians morals, they usually don't even fully understand Christian theology enough to do so. It is hypocritical to use a persons moral guidelines to judge them when your own moral guidelines are malleable to to your own benefit or, at worse, non-existant. Not to mention the whole point of the bible was to point out, to everyone, that - to your point - indeed: NO ONE can live up to the moral standard of God. Pointing this out over and over again just sounds like your reinforcing the bibles point while throwing out God; ironic, to say the least.
@@TheGldnSldr you assume, as many Christians do, that because a person isn’t Christian their morality is more malleable or more fallible.
I’m often interested in this with holding of judgement. Is this meant to suggest no Christian ever recognize and point out a flaw or a failing in those around them? Who then holds them accountable? How then do you have accountability partners? How can you have relationships with growth and mutual understanding if two people cannot say “you could do better about x” or “let’s reframe how you think about y”. I think perhaps that judgement line refers to a more profound judgement, something of consequence, such as social alienation or shunning, such as turning the poor and sick away by telling them their sins have caused their affliction.
Once again, I do not need to ascribe to anyones creed or philosophy to read it, understand it, and question those who claim to adhere to it when they deviate from it. It is not my burden to carry, it is theirs. The Christian is supposed to be a light in the dark, a person that through actions shows the world the visage of Christ, if I happen to know what that is supposed to look like by having read the available literature, such as the New Testament and some of the more universal philoso…. Theologians, then I am simply an informed observer asking why a person that claims x is doing y instead.
It is not, in fact, hypocritical to ask a person to live up to the guidelines, ethics, and morals they claim as their own, as the very bedrock of their character. It is hypocritical to claim those things publicly and also by actions not live up to them.
And as to your final point, the Bible doesn’t have a monopoly on wisdom. Most of its wisdom comes from the Jewish tradition (as Jesus was a rabbi and himself a radical Pharisee) and many of the proverbs and psalms and other stories within the Jewish tradition are versions of or are very similar to wisdom writings and mythological stories other civilizations of the near East had written down. (I have an entire book made up of Egyptian and Sumerian writings with their Very close analogs in the Tanak, happy to provide an isbn for you). I say that to suggest the Bible here is not making a unique or difficult point to arrive at, it is saying through parable something people already knew, and had known for thousands of years. It is relevant because people need to re learn the same things to be decent human beings in a society every generation.
I will leave you with the definition of the word hypocrisy “the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense.”
The atheist does not claim the standards or beliefs or morals, they simply know the other person does, and sees they are not following them, thus they can point out hypocrisy in another without being a hypocrite themselves.
So he's standing here, using his talents/gifts as a musician and lyricist to do something similar to what Elijah did "and many others" to shout out and warn people from the results of their actions. Also to point his finger towards fake Christians who just (talk) their faith without works so it's dead (yes the call to action) and to to actually do what you're saying or just don't waste my time... And to take Jesus as an example and do his deeds too (actually Jesus promised us whoever believed in him will do his actions and greater than them)
So it's like MJK is pushing true chrisitians to get out of their (selfish) shell and do an actual action towards their brothers in humanity despite their beliefs (Jesus was sitting with the outsiders and forsaken) .
Now imagine and tell me how this will affect the way the world works.
Just wanted to provide a couple thoughts:
1.) I'm about 100% sure this song was specifically directed at Congress. The "while you deliberate" and "thoughts and prayers" lines tip that trigger in my head. So if you ever get around to doing "The Doomed" put yourself in the mindset that this album is very very very political (down to the album title). They're invoking a lot of Christian imagery and phrasing to point out religious hypocrisy in politicians specifically.
2.) As a science teacher, the misunderstanding of survival of the fittest is quite frustrating. Survival of the fittest is the explanation for genetic change within a species over time. This can, and has in our lifetimes led to speciation. Look up the London underground mosquitoes for the example I always show my students. It is also an explanation for the continuation of certain species though others go extinct.
A rational person can plainly see that what makes human beings individually fit to survive has changed enormously since humans came to exist. But our species existence is predicated on our niche being that we are excellent at working together. Humankind has thrived BECAUSE we are pack animals, BECAUSE of our empathy.
Ayn Randian nonsense about ubermensch and unrestrained self interest is provably detrimental to human existence. Look at literally any place in Africa that is governed by warlords. That is their ideology. It doesn't lead to humans being better off.
Where you find empathy is where you find flourishing societies.
3.) That said, I'm an acoustic and have been for almost 20 years. I love ernest you guys are doing. I think religion has been very helpful to tons of people. Many of whom I know. It's also hurt tons of people. Many of whom I know.
I just don't believe in magical explanations, so (sin though it is) I won't accept a deity until it is proven to me.
4.) THAT said... you asked where morality could come from for someone like me... I imagine it's different for everyone, but this is my perspective:
I'm going to exist on this rock for a very short time. Billions of people will live on after I'm gone. I would not feel fulfilled as a person if I didn't help pave a good road for the next travelers to walk on.
I've tried self interest. It sucks. It turns out that humans always want more things. But there is a fulfillment you get by helping.
You might call that divine. I might call that the exact trait that has driven the fitness of our species.
Either way we both recognize that being a selfish jerk is a worthless way to live.
Thank you if you've read this. I hope you got some insight into the mind of a heathen, as I get insight into y'all's minds from this platform.
And... seriously, do The Doomed by APC next. Just... think political statement, not attack on religion itself. The picture will be much clearer.

This song is expressing the utter frustration regarding the lack of concern and action regarding gun violence. While people send thoughts and prayers and squabble over what to do... which is practically nothing, people continue to die. This entire album seems to be about the current cataclysmic and toxic social climate the U.S. and even the world is experiencing.

I can tell you that based on the training material we had to learn in our state that what you are saying about stolen weapons vs non stolen weapons is not true anymore. Many guns used in crimes are sourced legally but sold outside of a store legally between two citizens.

These lyrics appear to be referencing the epidemic of gun violence in schools. Deliberate while bodies accumulate etc.... the critique appears to be directed at those who send their thoughts and prayers instead of proposing actual actions/ideas. MJK is saying, instead of sitting on your hands and praying for miracles, be the miracle and give of yourself.
I feel like the missed point is that he is quoting our scripture as an example of the walk we should be walking. "Faith without works is dead. Isn't this the doctrine you follow? Then walk the talk or get out of my way."

Good video!!! :) For me, a non-religious person, caring about people comes from a recognition that they are just like me. Not only do I have a natural empathy for others, but I also think it would be hypocritical for me to treat others poorly and at the same time expect them to treat me well. I couldn't justify behaving that way. Also, if you treat others well, and others treat you well, everyone will be better off. It is difficult for non-religious people to fully describe an overall moral view, but that doesn't mean we don't have one. There's thousands of years of philosophy and ethics that do a pretty great job of articulating things. Since I have a moral standard, I can definitely be a hypocrite and recognize that I am being a hypocrite. Lastly, very few people believe we should follow survival of the fittest, aka social Darwinism. It's a very unfortunate name, because Darwin himself hated the idea that we should live by the survival of the fittest.
Glad to see another "free-thinker" (that's just what I call myself) watches these videos lol. Nothing wrong with anyone of faith or their partaking of it at all - I just think it's fascinating to see their reactions and I appreciate their take on these songs as well. Echo chambers are really dangerous, and they're unfortunately being fostered in social media. And of course there is nothing wrong with someone having faith. The notorious Phil Collins drum sound is a technique called gated reverb. It was a sound that came to be “that 80s sound”. They basically have the reverb cut off harshly under a certain threshold so it’s very much either there or it’s not... it doesn’t get the chance to taper out slowly like normal reverb does.

MOGWAI!!!! YES! If you like them, check out Russian Circles. They do get heavy at times but it's all instrumentals and they have some of the best soft melodic songs or parts I've ever heard. For an example of that, listen to Asa off their Guidance album from 2016.

This song really resonates me and it helped bring me out of a horrible depression/ substance abuse problem. And that situation is why i had a real problem with the Christian community. I went to church served in the music ministry but when I fell away and went through an unfortunate divorce and said situation my “Christian family” disappeared. Still pretty salty about it but hey I’m human. Hmm that felt pretty good, I don’t ever get to talk about it, type about it. Enjoy
Just a small note, saying 'survival of the fittest' would mean not caring/trying to help people is a total misunderstanding of that idea/evolutionary theory.
In a previous video Pastor and son laughed mockingly at the prepostorus idea of evolution. Some of these reactions make me cringe like I'm watching a flat earther trying to do science.

I’m not sure if I agree that Maynard doesn’t believe in Jesus or Christianity. He was heavily influenced by his mother in many ways. I think he does believe. But I think he had anger and bitterness towards god because of what happened to his mother

When you listen carefully the lyrics of Jambi it sounds like he was already saved once in that period, giving a chance to christ. And then he slipped away.

It’s not about Christian hypocrisy. He is talking about when tragedies happen and people get on social media and send “Thoughts and Prayer.” He is saying that energy does nothing and is self serving to them wanting “likes” and attention.

I've never heard MJK say he didn't believe in Jesus or Any higher spiritual being. I do believe he has anger at the "church" for the Hypocrisy that is in most churches. I myself have gone to many churches of different denominations and have only felt comfortable in one. So to say he don't believe simply because he has issues with the "church" is simply not cool.
Religion is what we should all hate. There is a huge difference between Christianity and religion. Religions teach salvation by works, which essentially means that a person gets to paradise in the afterlife by the good things they have done in this life. On the contrary, Christianity teaches salvation by faith in Jesus Christ and not by our works at all as Isaiah 64:6 (NIV) says, "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away."
Literally the songs wings and wings for marie say that he is a non believer.
@@rafpac6 I disagree.. Only line in wings and 10,000 days that even suggests he's not is "burden of proof tossed upon the believers". He follows that up right away with " you were my witness, my eyes, my evidence". The only reason you would ever say that (biblically speaking) is if you believe in a higher power.
Your thoughts are good but I believe the song is about gun violence in our countries. He is talking to the government not to Christians. He is saying the government is talking a big game but actually doing nothing. Using religious words to get his point across.

It is political as is the doomed. Their 2004 album emotive was also a political album, he hated Bush and he loaths Trump. The doomed is his response to Trump being elected.

So, I've watched all of these MJK videos and I don't think I've seen anyone mention "The Patient" by Tool. That's a GREAT song both in the literal sense and that it's great for discussing "faith" as a concept and practice.
Also, if we're throwing out more MJK songs, you could always do The Doomed (APC), Jambi (Tool), or Sour Grapes (Puscifer).
Keep in mind, in my own life I've experienced LOTS of religious people who hope for miracles. In fact, in my home country of Colombia, this is so common that people just use it a few times a day it seems. "Por favor mi diosito, dame un milagro" is a stereotypical phrase you could hear in probably all Latin America. In Europe not as much. Same in USA. Usually comes from people in poverty.

MJK's faith is central to his body of work, but I think it is largely misunderstood. I believe that it was shaken by the tragedy of his mother's life, and the hypocrisy of the church in which he was raised. However, having been abandoned by his father at a young and and raised in that church by his mother and knowing the Bible is an unshakeable part of who he is. As William Makepeace Thackeray said, "Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children." This is especially true for a young MJK whose entire context for his existence was his mother and her faith, and it easy to see how her ailment and the hypocrisy of those in her church left him with a lot of difficult questions.
In "Judith" he is expressing his anger, as you pointed out. However, you may notice that he never denies God or says that he does not believe. In many of MJK's artistic works it is implied that the human race is not worthy of what it has been given, and must transcend his ignorant monkey state in order to achieve enlightenment. I am using the term "monkey" here in the same context as "Right in Two" ... it has nothing to do with evolution. "Right in Two" is a story told from the perspective of Angels having a conversation about the ignorance of man. To a "higher" being, we humans must seem barely any better in our behavior than ignorant savage beasts like "monkeys." "46&2" and "Lateralus" are also examples of this. He is not asking for the physical Darwinian evolution of man, but rather a spiritual evolution of consciousness that brings us out of our ignorance and closed-mindedness.
Back to "Judith:" in this piece, disregarding the expletive and the blasphemy, I do not believe at any point is he really railing against God and Jesus. Rather, he is railing against the church, which is subject to the fallacy of man, and he feels like they have God and Jesus wrong, perhaps even implying that he has a different view. When he says, "YOUR Lord, YOUR Christ" it feels like he has "his own" Lord and Christ (metaphorically speaking). He is a young man looking for answers to very difficult questions, and his anger stems not only from his mother's affliction, but from his frustration in not being able to rectify the way he was raised with the harsh realities of the real world and his exposure to the true nature of man.
Fast forward to his mother's death and the beautiful tribute to her life that is "Wings for Marie." If nothing else in his work is able to demonstrate that he has faith in God, this song stands alone as a clear sign that he is not only a faithful man, but that his spiritual wounds are starting to heal. I feel Judith Marie's unfaltering faith in the face of her own trials is a true inspiration and that as MJK grew and matured, he began to learn from that, just as he did when he was a child. She demonstrated true belief IN SPITE of her physical affliction and the hypocrisy of the church that shunned her. A more mature Maynard sees this more clearly now, and is saying, "if she can maintain that faith in spite of it all, and clear up to the bitter end, may there really is something to all this." I believe that "Wings for Marie" is not only his attempt to lift his mother's spirit into the loving embrace of the Creator, but also signals his own return to God, if not the church. Finally, he is not DEMANDING that she be allowed into heaven, he is advocating on her behalf. He is begging and pleading and yes, even PRAYING! His point of view is that if ANYONE deserves heaven, it should be Judith Marie. While this may be a flawed philosophy, his effort is noble, and it is not an unreasonable request from a grieving son.
Bringing us to the current topic: "TalkTalk." So, a more mature Maynard with a renewed sense of faith is now starting to reexamine the hypocrisy that drove him from the church in the first place. He's saying "I'm ready to really do this now, who's with me?!" Further, he's not ONLY talking about the Church (a term I'm using here to encompass all of Christianity), but the secular world as well. We live in a Social Media age, where after a terrorist attack (for example) the best that most can muster is a temporary profile picture showing their support on Facebook. This is the "cake in a crisis." Just as Marie Antoinette said "let them eat cake" when she was told that her people had no bread. The words are empty and offer no nourishment, spiritually or otherwise. This extends all the way from common man to the actions of media conglomerates and world governments. Those who are in a position to effect positive change make a minimal an effort so as to be barely more than the "thoughts and prayers" platitudes of the social media masses. "Bodies accumulate" while you "deliberate" because war, famine, disasters, etc. continue and more and more people are affected each day while men in suits sit at conference tables and plan to maybe do something about it in general. In fact this is getting worse and worse and our modern world seems to be just a short step away from ruination because of it.
What Maynard is putting out here is a call to action: "that's enough talk, let's actually DO something." Again, he expresses his frustration with an expletive, which is particularly hard to hear so close to the name of God. I almost think that like much of his other work he is showing that he is also acknowledging his own hypocrisy and the hypocritical nature of man. He is also doing this to say, "you all claim to know Jesus, but all you do is talk about it. You know what? That's fine. However, I am actually going to DO something about it, so you all need to step aside and I will not allow you or your talk to stop me and whoever is with me from actually trying to accomplish what is needed to fix all this."
The last point that I'll make is that the song "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" should be listened to as a companion piece to "TalkTalk." It is an almost ironically lighthearted look at the impending disaster that is sure to come as a result of our current state on earth. I actually wish that the single had been released before the single for "TalkTalk" so that others could see one song as "wow, things are really this bad" and "that's enough talk, let's actually do something about it," respectively.
As a closing statement, I'd like to commend Rob on this channel and thank him as others have for his open mindedness. I think it's important work you are doing here. Many others might reject this music solely on its genre and you clearly show not only a love for the musicality of the songs, but your effort to peel back the layers and discern a deeper meaning is very commendable.
I think that your effort to provide a Biblical context for these songs is an IMPORTANT ministry. Not everyone may agree, but I believe you are reaching people and maybe even bringing people to God through their love for this music. As men, of course we will have different viewpoints and unique interpretations, but I would really like to thank you for inspiring me. Because I have discovered your channel and enjoyed your videos and perspective, I have been taking my own deeper look at this music that I have loved for years and using it as a mirror to examine my own faith.
Please keep up the good work.
As I watched the video I too wished Rob had more focus on the arc of Maynard's spiritual development over the years. If you know his music and story (there is a great biography published on him), you see that he is a very deep thinker and examiner of mind, body, spirit, culture, and religion. I too have benefited in my own walk by hearing his admonitions and being challenged by the questions his writing poses. Somehow, Maynard seems to use the world around him and his background in the church in subtle ways to write very powerful commentary on America's spiritual state.

His voice no matter what band hes using his voice with just cuts into you. Splices into your soul. Maynard is way more than 3 dimensional. Hes phenomenal and definitely one of the top out there. Idk if its fair to assume Maynard's religion, spirituality, intent, or motives. After listening to Judith I may also View these lyrics As hypocritical. However I've been a big fan of a perfect circle and Tool for about 15 years and have accompanied them on their Journey.
