      well that has much more to do with the music type you like, not religion. if you e.g. listen to metal music of all kinds like me, then you wouldn't stop that because it just wouldnt make any sense. It's more like (with me), that I am a lil bit more careful when it comes to bands such as slaughter to prevail, which I musically like, but in some lyrics have a rather anti-religious narrative. (which I don't blame them for)

      @@liam1912 100% - but there are some who think all heavy music is the same. That is what I was getting at. They hear a heavy riff and it's "NOPE!" (don't even bother looking at the lyrics or musicianship). These guys are clearly not like that. I was not implying that all heavy music is the same - some is pure crap - of course, all musical genres have everything from pure genius to pure drivel (which is also subjective, yes I know).

      I was respecting this whole process until he said "it would take more faith to believe in an evolutionary world view than a Christian world view." There is a big fundamental difference between the two... particularly that evolution is a scientific theory which considers various pieces evidence that can be tested and measured, and it can be used to make predictions which might turn out to be correct or incorrect. The Christian world view is a belief system based on stories that must be either believed or not believed. I think that continuing to conflate the two is intellectually unforgivable, so for that reason, I'm out!

      @@JHayes37 I don't think it's one dimensional like that. If I HAD to put money on it being about one person, I'd actually go with Paul D'Armour, but I don't like going in that direction.
      From the tool FAQ:
      *The big question: Who is "Eulogy" about?
      As with most Tool songs, the song is vague enough that can be interpreted to be anyone / anything. The song is primarily about the death of something which most probably turned out to be a fake. Regarding the rumor that the band is no longer on good terms with Henry Rollins; he has recently been heard talking positively about Tool, saying he was unaware of any bad blood. In Modern Drummer (10/93), Danny mentions L. Ron Hubbard as the object of the song. One way or another, though, the song has a message that can stand apart from any specific target; the interpretation is left to you, and the specifics aren't too important."*
      Might I remind that the boys are always saying things to throw people off. Maybe, to Danny, the song is about Hubbard, but maybe not.

      FWIW guys, I can see that you both love Tool. There is always this conflict between the love of music, and modern 'Christian' Evangelicalism. What you don't understand yet, is that GOD SPEAKS THROUGH MUSIC (and art, and literature, etc.). GOD IS POWERFUL. He can do that! But back in my day (late 70s/early 80s), Tool would have been the scariest band of all, because they DO dabble in the occult. They are the first, and only band I know of to openly embrace the occult. And now I know more about it!

    • @ganondorfchampin
      @ganondorfchampin 5 років тому +5

      Oh, I understand that God speaks through music, and I hear him in Tool's. Regarding Tool dabbling in the occult, one misconception is that the occult is satanic or otherwise anti-Christian. Dabbling it is dangerous as dark powers may interfere, but it's also the basis for much of Christian Mysticism, where holy men were trying to better understand their relationship with God.

    I've been a Tool fan for quite a long time. I also happen to be atheist although I genuinely appreciate and enjoy this channel. As a former musician I can tell you that Tool is a masterpiece in everything they do, musically. With all that said I think you dissected the song pretty well. Although, Maynard frequently paints a picture for his listeners that does not always speak for what the song is actually about. The "monkey" he speaks of is definitely human because he is very much a person who lives his life based on facts and not faith. I dont think he leans his lyrics toward a divine creator as if he actually believes that there is.

    • @Runyan4PREZ
      @Runyan4PREZ 6 років тому +9

      I would agree.. my take from it is that he is throwing evolution into the song with the monkey to human reference.. playing off of religion and saying why would god create humans that fight, kill, wield clubs and knives, sometimes even in the name of their chosen creator. Maynard, from all accounts including his own, is not a believer. He has some tough takes on christianity and religion in general. I do however respect some that choose to believe or live by a religion, it is good to believe in something, can help get you through things and can help you stay grounded. And while many believe in good things.. some obviously abuse religion, like anything that can be abused.. just often on grander scales.

      I believe he may actually be referencing a quote in the movie “The Prophecy,” where Lucifer says something like, “how I love you talking monkeys for this... know more about war and treachery of the spirit than any angel.”
      It’s also safe to say that none of us personally know Maynard, and what his true beliefs are. However, we do know that he spends an awful lot of lyrics based on Biblical facts and reasoning. Which would lead me to believe that he is knowledgeable of the Bible, and does believe in a higher power. It’s highly doubtful that Maynard is an atheist.
      There are a lot of accounts of devout atheists turning to Christ, once the “truly” dive into the Word and understand our Creator.

      @@DodeyPotroast Just because he is knowledgeable about the Bible, doesnt mean he believes in what's in it. I have friends that have read both the Old and New Testament and Quran but are devout atheists still. Just search around and you'll see interviews where he clearly says he despises organised religions. Now, he does come across as a spiritual person, but not necessarily a theist. But as you said none of us actually know what goes inside his head.

    Listening to this one day on the way I was literally God smacked. I have listened to this song hundreds of times, but for some reason I never really noticed the line "Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here". For some reason this early morning it came through loud, clear, and undeniable! I was literally shaking and looking up at the stars passing through the trees in the darkness. I was drawn to tears and couldn't shake it off. For days every few hours those words blew through my mind. I knew I had to take a large step to get back to God. I had been approached by several over the last year or so to attend an ACT's retreat, and I always had a reason to blow it off. I knew I couldn't say no if I was approached about the next one. Naturally, I attended the next one, and it was the most healing and renewing experience of my life. 3 years have past and since then, and I am eternally grateful for Tool bringing me back to God, or should I say I love how the Lord brought me back to him through one of my favorite bands. I highly recommend ACT's to anyone out there. You can only be a retreatant once. There is a reason for that.

    Love the song, appreciate your thoughts on the theology side of it, but I just want to throw some education at your understanding of evolution. You are quite outspoken when someone misinterprets Christianity but seem to be hypocritically dismissive when it comes to evolution, something that you seem to know very little about and have massively misinterpreted. I'm going to lay out a quick argument here, but please look into the science yourself; there is only so much one can say in a UA-cam comment.
    Evolution does not say that we came from monkeys. Or that we are closely related to any other animal. What it does say is that "In the beginning" (see what I did there) life began through some process (probably a chemical reaction though I cannot rule out Divine Intervention) and then over billions of years and countless generations, that life mutated to adapt to changes in it's environment.
    Humans did not evolve from monkeys... Humans evolved from humans. But at some point in the VERY distant past, all primates (including humans) share a common ancestry. All that that means is that millions of years ago, that common ancestor split up into different groups and became separated and then each group began adapting separately to their environment. Over thousands of generations, they became separate species and one of those became us.
    The fact that we share DNA with all other known life on this planet is itself evidence that all life came from a common source. How similar our DNA is to, say, a fruit fly, is evidence of how long it has been since our common ancestor split up (for humans and fruit flies it's been a LONG time; 60ish percent is a very low number).
    If you really don't believe in evolution, you might want to research how agriculture works. Selective breeding and genetically modified organisms (GMO's) are just fancy terms for humans artificially evolving crops and livestock to be better food sources.
    Also, all the geological and cosmological evidence point to the Earth being here for a VERY long time. If you don't believe that, then I can understand why evolution would be difficult since evolution takes millions of years to have a noticeable effect.
    Please do educate yourself if you're going to actively ridicule something. I'm really not trying to be malevolent here, I just think it's important to counter misunderstandings of how science works, just as you think it important to counter misunderstandings of Christianity.

      Interestingly enough, there is something in chemical thermodynamics called “the seed hypothesis.” Essentially, it posits that the chemical process required to “create life” couldn’t have taken place on the conditions we know to have existed on earth at the time. Chemical processes require very specific amounts of either endothermic or exothermic energy. Furthermore, particular agents denature under certain conditions as well. So, without some some of external intervening force, life would never have come to be. I should note, I am a Christian, so my worldview is biased, but much of my scientific research is actually led me toward the existence of God. I’m not a creationist, per se, though. I believe God created all that there is, but his “days” are quite more like eons, which could be an appropriate translation from the original text in Genesis. But I do appreciate your well written and succinct explanation of evolution.

      Nicely put,
      A simplistic argument for evolution I would put to a Christian is Noah, if you believe the Bible that Noah and his family were the only people on earth after the flood, how do you explain all of the different races and religions of the world?
      If the Bible is correct then we all share a single common ancestor. Given the 3000-4000 years since the flood (taken from creation.com/the-date-of-noahs-flood) we've manged to colonize much of the planet and become a rainbow of different colors, talents and beliefs. That's only 150-200 generations, and look how different we all are, short, tall, fat, thin, brown, white, Christian, Atheist, Muslim, Hindu, Hare Krishna etc, smart, not so smart haha.
      Where do you think we'll be if we're given 4.5 billion years? Would any of us look like Noah anymore? will we even be on earth anymore?

    You seem like a good person, Pastor. I've had issues in my life with people who call themselves Christians in the past. Mainly because they don't deserve to be called Christian. To be Christian is to be like Christ. And Christ taught unexceptionable love. I've met many "Christians" who have showed hate, or looked down on people who don't live a certain way. From watching you and how you handle people that talk badly toward you in the comment section, it seems like you are the type of person who spreads love to everyone. Thank you for that. You don't judge people for acting out of line(at least in the comment section). You embrace others thoughts and take what they say into consideration (from how I've seen you analyze some lyrics). I know I don't know you in real life, but this series is an amazing testimony towards who you are, your faith, and your God.

      @Nunya Business I understand Christians are humans. And I would never expect anyone to be a saint, Christian or otherwise. But too often I've seen in churches, big and small, this attitude of disdain towards others they don't believe live up to their standards of what a good Christian/ person is supposed to be. Even though technically, according to the Bible, there are no good people. We are all unworthy. But Christ taught love. And I also understand their are Christians that aren't like this. I think Pastor Rob is a great example. And if this is how he leads his congregation, I'm sure they are great people as well. We are all human. And I believe no matter what your beliefs are, we can all use more love and understanding towards one another.

    I love watching these. Thank you for responding to your viewers’ requests. Tool is a masterpiece band. Everything they do is with absolute mastery musically and purposeful lyrically. I don’t feel there are many in the echelon of skill and care to precision that this band practices. As a drummer I have to say that Danny Carey is probably the most creatively articulate drummer on the planet. Oh and those drums were not congas or bongos. They’re Tablas, an ancient percussion instrument from India. They use tablas in songs that deal with transcendental, spiritual topics to create an almost psychotropic element of all religions. Most religions have some sort of sacrament or protocol they take part in that induces a higher state of connection with a creator. Indians use bhang, Egyptians used the blue nile lotus, Rastafarians use ganja, Peruvians use ayahuasca, Christ fasted in the desert for 40 days which undoubtedly created a hallucinogenic state, also some say Moses burned the bush on the mount horeb and the type of plant he burned had a purpose. Possibly DMT (dymethyltryptamine) that allowed Moses to tap into a deeper frequency of communication with God or some entity similar to what LSD or Psylociben would do. Burning a psychedelic plant and inhaling the smoke is used by many cultures around the world to induce such a state.
    Anyways love the videos, keep it up. I think you are doing great work by connecting with people rather than separating yourselves from the “less than desirables” in society. Music connects people like nothing on the planet.
    I suggest Another song by tool, called vicarious. It’s not in the vain of spirituality but it further delves into the psychosis of man and violence. Powerful song. Peace 🙏

      @SymbolicActs Who said anything about them questioning their faith? Nothing in my comment even suggests that as a possibility my friend I think you're making some correlations that aren't there. What I intended to make note of was the fact that this song feels and sounds psychotropic because of the use of instruments to form a soundscape of ancient spirituality....back when herbs and alchemy were a large part of worship to a creator. Plus the inclusion of Alex Gray's art throughout the entire album seems like a dead giveaway. Alex admits that the art is from his experiences on LSD and Ayahuasca that shaped his awareness of the divine interconnectedness of life and creation. The album cover represents the Godhead of ancient Hindu mysticism, Brahma - the God of creation. Not trying to break anyone's faith, just furthering understanding of the depth of a masterpiece.

Because I know how BS it all is, ALL religions, not just this 1 variation out of the 40K that are on Earth right now. Hey! You seem like good people so I’ll try to be nice, but you’re level of understanding on evolution and genetics is quite embarrassing. Nobody ever said humans evolved from chimpanzees (or cats, or fruit flies etc....), the observation based on the evidence is that ALL animals share a common ancestry (including humans). Some creatures are “closer” to certain others, some are much much further removed from each other. The fact that we share a lot of dna in common with every other creature alive on the planet only backs up this observation. To reiterate, we did not evolve from chimpanzees! We and chimpanzees share a relatively recent common ancestor, hence the genetic similarity being so high in comparison to the other animals you mentioned. I’m really not an expert and even I can understand this at least to a very basic level. On a positive note, hope you keep listening to new and interesting music!

      There is another thing about the "evidence" concerning evolution. Alot of this evidence is used daly in all kinds of medicine and biology. This kind of evidence scratches the paint of the other way of seeing the evidence that supports some kind of intelligence behind it all. You should have a look at some biological research videos. Chris Cartwright, I agree to a large extent with the points you made. I just wanted to point out, in all fairness, that the same points back up his creationists beliefs. If God made everything, then it makes sense that he might use the same "building blocks" in all his creations. In fact, I have a hard time seeing why evolutionists and creationists are always at each others throats, when neither side can say for certain that God did not create humans *using* evolution.

    With respect, calling us "monkeys" wasn't evolutionary, it was just a way of degrading us.
    We didn't evolve from monkeys, rather, we and monkeys evolved separately from a common ancestor.
    As delicately and respectfully as possible, please explore the other side before ruling it out. Making fun of our relationships with other mammals doesn't help your followers. We can look at DNA, these days. These relationships are factual, not hearsay - we can literally see them. A lot of people watch and trust you guys, and steering them away from from what is common knowledge is a real disservice. I'm not exclusively talking about the secular world, either - even the Pope understands evolution.
    Saying "I'm no scientist" doesn't get you off the hook, because then your whole world view becomes an argument from ignorance. Please, please, please take a quick look at evolution, consider how the world would look without a divine creator, be honest, and sincerely try to understand it. You'll come to find it works perfectly fine without any magic or supernatural intervention, and if you can't, at least you'll have reasons to refute it.
    I decided I was an atheist at five years old when I saw a cat kill a bird (to briefly explain my perspective), and I still enjoy your videos and your theistic assessments. Man, when you said you were a creationist, though, all credibility just dissolved.
    You're in a position to help America catch up with the rest of the world on this.
    Peace

      We share about 90% of DNA with a fruit fly as well. Doesnt mean we came from them. Jt doesnt mean we share a common ancestor. It just means God had a template to create life. X and Y chromosomes are in every living creature. Evolution was used to justify enslaving Africans for 200 years saying they were "less evolved" and weren't human.

    Maybe this is a waste of time writing this, but it is a bit shallow to think that "Oh, evolutionary science must be faulty because they (people writing the article) can't even decide which one we actually evolved from"... Rather than simply joking about how stupid the theories of the articles are (or so some of us think they are), all the animals listed evolved from a common ancestor; an ancient unnamed mammal... Instead of thinking of it as a linear visual representation (how most do), it is actually more accurate to think as evolution as a tree, how one being can evolve into many different ones over millennia...
    There is a theory that humans came about because we were weaker monkeys in a tribe that were not the strongest swingers, so instead of going high into the trees to avoid predators, our ancestors came down from the trees and decided to form groups on the ground...
    A final note, no one is to say that the Bible does not work in metaphors... (I.E. God is natural selection and evolution, the dust is representative of the unicellular organisms that evolved into multicellular beings)

    Dude, this is so refreshing as a musician, a super fan of TOOL, and most importantly given the fact that I hang my hat on the Gospel of Christ. I've struggled a lot with being a fan due to Maynard's blatant disdain for God and religion (rightfully so, in many ways) and since I learned about Danney Carey's fascination with masonic esoteric belief systems. There is no way I can stop being inspired by their music, which is why I will always listen to it. What I find so refreshing about your approach is how focused you are in attempting to actually feel what they are expressing, both intellectually and musically, FIRST! This is one thing that gets so lost in the rhetoric of dogmatic religiosity that Jesus was preaching about in the first place! There are things about TOOL that we need to be careful about when listening, but when the Spirit of God gives you that freedom to learn from those who need Him the most, it goes to show how in tune with each other we can be, regardless of how each person feels. Now, we can only pray that the members of TOOL come to Christ, but while we are still here, we can praise God for the gifts He's given these men. God can use ANYTHING to His purpose, and does. Having TOOL as an influence has very positively shaped how I approach music, and for that, I give credit to God. Furthermore, how you break down your thoughts on the questions or problems posed by the lyrics written by Maynard is an excellent example of what it means to listen. I know I'm on a good one with this rant, but you've gained a new subscriber and I really appreciate what you're doing with this channel. Thank you for taking on what most mainstream believers wouldn't dare. This is truly an awesome way to connect with people on so many levels. Great job, and God bless!

    I watched all the Maynard videos in this channel and while I applaud the effort to go into subjects uncommon for religious people, as well as the evident appreciation for the artistry and detail in these songs, I must say it's a little depressing to see how you take anything that supports your dogma at face value, even if it's being presented in an allegorical or figurative manner; but instantly deflect to apologia, misinterpretation or rejection when it challenges said dogma. Most worrying of all is the tired mockery you make of evolution, one we've heard a million times before.
    If my impression of you from these videos is correct, you're intelligent people with a mind open enough, and a willingness to argue in good faith, to study ideas and understand them, even if they don't change your mind. You don't have to believe in it to understand how the theory claims it works, and you don't have to make a mockery of it to justify your position.

    • @kidwajagstang
      @kidwajagstang 3 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately, the sad truth is he’s a prime example of a person that has been trained to question everything EXCEPT his religion. He clearly had a background in apologetics, which, I would argue, is actually more effective at cementing this kind of mindset vs the “intended” reason of being able to argue or “defend” your faith. The majority of the “defenses” aren’t actually real evidence or “facts” but verses that, while not always, but the majority of the time are misinterpretations or incorrect translations, but the apologist is often completely unaware of how questionable the English bible truly is when comparing it with the original Hebrew, Greek, and Latin writings, ESPECIALLY towards Hebrew. It was while learning Hebrew and seeing all the flaws for myself that had ALWAYS existed in my “infallible” book that the true absurdity of religion and the degree to which I had been brainwashed, by others that were themselves brainwashed, and that to continue the cycle would be the worst possible form of denial and sin against the very knowledge and truth I’m now enlightened to. So they can go on following their faith that is a melting pot of mistranslations and subsequent additions that piled misunderstanding on misunderstanding until it created its own current form of insanity. I’m just going to enjoy life best I can and hope the God this whole religion was based on has mellowed out by A LOT and isn’t as “unchanging” as I was taught.

    I really like your videos, but, your approach to evolution is so wrong that it hurts, with all due respect. Evolution says we are similar to every existing animal because we descended from the same common ancestor, we have already lots of proves of evolution. You can see evolution in antibiotic adaptation of microorganisms, if you don't believe in evolution I bet you to use the same antibiotics we had in 1950 when you get a flu, and see what happens. And there's a lot of other examples, but I gonna stop now because English is not my first language and I'm not sure if explaining myself correctly

    • @jesseleite
      @jesseleite 6 років тому +4

      Who was present during early stages of evolution to have a 100% factual understanding? Is it possible that we could be wrong about certain evolutionary theories, since none of us can go back and repeat human evolution for study? Those are interesting points you make about antibiotics as well! We need to be open about hearing all sides though, and I think pastor here was very respectful in how he presented himself.

    • @jesseleite
      @jesseleite 6 років тому +2

      @@MrTheHeriyo I disagree.
      Evolution would be the dogs evolving to breed into a new colour that they have never historically had. If all the white puppies die or stop having babies, we actually lose the white puppy genes in the dogs' DNA line. There is no evolution in that breeding example. That said, I would agree that there are other areas of science where we can better prove evolution (at least repeatable/observable micro-evolution, as some might call it). But I would still argue about whether macro human evolution is 100% factual, when all we have to go on are interpretations of historic evidence.
      Let me be clear, I'm not actually arguing against human evolution per say here. If you believe the pastor is wrong here, that's okay. But if you believe with 100% certainty that evolutionists are 100% right about the big bang and/or the early stages of human evolution (both of which evolutionists were not present for observation), then I would say you also possess a type of faith, similar to the faith of us Christians in ways ;)

    • @MrTheHeriyo
      @MrTheHeriyo 6 років тому +5

      Well, perhaps it was a bad example, but we humans created dogs with selective breading, so if we humans can create a species by controlling their reproduction, nature can also affect the reproductive patterns of animals making them evolve. I believe in God (even though I'm not a creationist), so you're right I've got faith, but I don't think the pastor should talk about evolution with such a wrong approach. I really like him, but he's spreading misinformation

    • @jesseleite
      @jesseleite 6 років тому +2

      @@MrTheHeriyo What exactly did he say specifically to spread misinformation as 100% fact? I definitely heard his opinion loud and clear, but I could not disagree more with "your approach to evolution is so wrong that it hurts". You are telling him that he is 100% wrong, but I thought he was pretty clear in saying things like "I could be wrong", "in my estimation", "I think evidence points that way", etc. It's okay to have a strong opinion on either side, but he has every right to voice it in a public youtube video, especially when he's using words like "I think" or "in my estimation" :) Curious, do you believe in freedom of speech?

    • @MrTheHeriyo
      @MrTheHeriyo 6 років тому +6

      @@jesseleite Well I was referring more when he jokes about we evolving from mice or cats because we have DNA similarities, that is 100% wrong and there can be some people who may think evolution is wrong because some researches said we are similar to cats, and others said we are similar to other animal. The reality is that we are similar in different proportion to every animal, and the pastor didn't get it totally right, and he's joking about it, I'm not saying his believes are wrong, neither I'm saying that he should believe in evolution. I'm just saying that the way he aboards evolution is wrong, because that study showing that we have similarities to cats doesn't say that we evolve from them. And yeah I believe in freedom of speech, I'm using mine right now

      Evolution for example has been falsified. Again - Coming from someone who firmly believed in evolution.
      That's just one lie. With everything I've realized, I learned there is more to life, and that it is far more reasonable to believe in God.

    That's the really neat thing about good lyrics, you leave them vague enough that people can interpret a more personal meaning from them. It makes you feel a profound connection to the music that more "on the nose" lyrics lack. "Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here" is an amazing lyric.
