The word pneuma comes from the Greek word for "that which is breathed or blown." The term took on multiple layers of meaning for the ancient Greeks and later for Judeo-Christian theologians and philosophers, as it became a word for "spirit" or "soul." References to the "breathe" concept are found in the song's line We are born of one breath, one word, and the continued repetition of "spirit." In the case of this song, the reference to the word is clearly oriented towards the yogic tradition, with guitar synthesized to sound like the Middle Eastern sitar and the light playing of Arabic goblet drum. Breath, or "pneuma," is at the core essence of yogic practice, both literally and spiritually. This song basically is a yogic meditation rendered in music. It discusses how we human beings are bound to our flesh and the illusions of the material world, but really are called to return to the essential, egoless "pneuma" of the universe's underlying reality. The song is a call to spiritual freedom and oneness: Reach out and beyond Wake up, remember We are born of one breath, one word We are all one spark, eyes full of wonder
Based on 10,000days, wings, Maynard is now saved, his lyrics are a well-defined truth, endlessly questioned by Maynard, in his path towards the self-evolution, becoming an enlightened being. He's following his own path as we all are, we must question everything to find our truth, and become our highest form. Instead of brushing things off as, "I Know he's this and therefore," its been 13 years since the previous album, 10,000 days, over 5000 days, and nearly 20 years since Lateralus, nearly 24 for Ænima, and almost 30 since Opiate, and Tool were in their 30's when they got together and got signed very quickly because of their sheer awesomeness. point being lots of time has passed by since each of their previous musical offerings. People grow as they live 5 and 10 and 15 years and more, as they say, "we grow into a different person every 5 years," Maynard has thus passed his 12 personal evolution and at a lifelong jujitsu, cross country runners pace. It'd have been way cooler if you tried to fully understand the best you can the words of this song, sadly this felt really rushed and brushed aside, very much a lost opportunity for growth on your part and for that of your subscribers. This song contains the light to light a lot of individual paths, I'D LOOK DEEPER, but that's just like my opinion dude. Party On!

Yes. Invincible definitely hits home for me because I am getting to a point in my life that I am getting older and learning to really accept it. To me the song speaks about how, especially men, feel young and have a hard time accepting when we are no longer as good, strong or whatever as we use to be. It’s a tough pill to swallow.
Thanks so much for this! Being a Christian with TOOL being my favorite band has made for some difficult internal reflections. TOOL is, and will always be, my favorite. Thanks for the video! God bless
Danny went to college for his art. His playstyle revolves around math and geometry. The interesting sound he has playing at the beginning of the song is played on one of eight electric pads, called Mandala pads. Now that Neil Peart is gone from this world Danny is the new professor.
Most Tool songs are from a Bhuddist philosophy of the world, not Secular, or anti-anything. It's amazing to me that a band that's entire purpose is to inspire other artists to create, would be considered anti-anything, they are the opposite of that, rather inspiring the good of human kind and the artistry of humans around the world.
I don’t think Tool represents any specific religious world view. Their elements of Buddhism, Stoicism, and Gnosticism, and yes, Christianity present in this song.
Tool fans waited 13 years for this album to drop, and it was well worth it. All of the songs are amazing, but Descending has to be my favorite. Check it out.
Glad to see you gentleman back with videos. I hope everything is going as best as it can with the family. much love for you and everyone else. Om Nama Shivaya, brothers and sisters.
The spirit/flesh comparison you got down, but the "Child, wake up, release the light" section was glossed over. As a Christian, to me that line immediately makes me think of Matthew 5:14-16: "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." He's basically telling people that they need to let their light shine to the world, wake up to their potential, and to remember that we're all born of the same breath like you mentioned with regards to Adam's creation. We need to band together in order to survive together. All this said, I'm glad you guys decided to do a video on this song.
Knowing a little about the band's beliefs, the light is more likely to be the light of lucifer he is talking about, the "hidden knowledge" that God doesn't want you to know, probably the new age idea that you are a "god" you just have to realize it and after a certain number of the world's populations accept this the "ascended masters" will come to earth to "guide" the earth into a "higher conscience" (i.e. the anti christ's reign on earth).

The entire album is in variants of 7. As far as the time signature. Drummer's name is Danny Carey. Master and original. Keep in mind Maynard's phrasing as the singer is also done with the time signature in mind. He's truly one of the instruments. It's very complex. It takes multiple listens to get all the nuances and motifs.
Once again, I thought this was wonderful. Though I was raised Catholic, and went through CCD and Confirmation, I don't consider myself religious, our would proclaim myself as a believer of any spiritual structure. I appreciate the openness into exploring the meaning behind something that may not have intended to fit within the Christian belief system. That openness, and the mental exercise of drawing parallels between the art and the religion, is a respectful one, and I believe is something that has earned my attention into hearing the input from your side. I think the world could use a lot more of this. Honest listening, appreciation for the work put into the idea, and non-confrontational discourse of differing interpretations and beliefs.
I grew up in a Christian church, and I am obsessed with Tool. After learning about metaphysics and philosophy. Every time you say AD a.m. in reference to the song I cannot help but hear ATOM. After stepping away from the church and going on my own journey, I cannot help but see every Christian tale as a parable through metaphors that can be applied through our experienced reality. On much deeper levels than many can imagine these metaphors can explain everything that is what we call existence. However it is through long-winded poetic metaphors that most cannot grasp the beauty. I had to look at religions outside of Christianity, and learn about psychology, metaphysics, magic, spirituality, New Age thinking, other religions around the world, and understanding that we are all connected to the one. It baffles me that you can understand Christianity as well as you do and not see all these things that you were attributing to Maynards own believe system are so in alignment with Christianity The spark The Flame the breath The universal energy force that ties us all together. Taoists call it the Tao. Scientists currently call it the quantum universe/dark matter. Hindus call it Brahman Christians just call it the Trinity. It is a Unitarian concept that transcends ALL religions and human perceptions

Getting super-technical, PNEUMA is a loanword into English from the Greek, where it has multiple related meanings, such as breath, wind, spirit. Info on the wikipedia entry here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneuma Hence the multiplicity of ways in which it can be taken especially in spiritual contexts. The authors of the New Testament used this when writing both about the spirit inside a man and the Holy Spirit of God, and started really drilling in to how God works in our spirit through His Spirit. It's a fascinating study in taking the mystical and ineffable things of God and putting them into words we understand yet still containing so much greater meaning that we can't fully understand.
I personally think the "child, release the light" part is a reference to their older song called Jimmy, which you should totally react to, in which he tells the child to to hold the light etc.

I just want to say I appreciate how open-minded you guys are. After all, hearing and meditating on beliefs and views that differ from your own is how you strengthen and refine your faith. Jesus didn't teach by just affirming what people already believed. He challenged their beliefs, and those who listened became his disciples. Likewise, there were those like the Sadducees who challenged Jesus's teachings with hypothetical, but he presented some of his best teachings by first listening to what they said, then responding (Mark 12:18-27)

It''s good to see you guys making videos again, especially Tool ones. You guys are definitely my go to Tool guys, you always have interesting takes and it is interesting to see the implicitly religious overtones of Tool being discussed.
Maynard plays on words a lot, example Tool. Tool has a different meaning such as a person who lacks the knowledge of being used, or a tool is a gadget, utensil. Whatever the person who analyzes his lyrics can get one meaning while another gets a totally different one. Example, on one song Prison Sex, one person over analyzed the song and came up with a meaning of depression and how people who are depressed feel better when abused, something like that, another person who was very dim suggested it's just about anal sex. Now I can see both sides and both have some validity. Pneuma, in particular, is another play on words but comes from his beliefs that derive from Bill Hicks. In one of Bill's stand up special he monologues, Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Heres Tom with the Weather.” If Maynard's lyrics have some biblical connotations is because he combines other religions to christianity. Buddha teaches, " I am not a body with a soul, I'm a soul with a body." So to learn from the world and to grasp the lessons it can teach and not limiting yourself to just one book is idiotic. That is why he says. " Wake up child, wake up remember." Peel all the layers you can from his music, feel the rhythm, embrace the lyrics with the music or just one part, use it to obtain an epiphany or do what you will but don't close your mind and learn something. In the words of Albert Einstein, " Science without religion is boring, but religion without science, that is ignorance." Also, something Maynard subscribes to.
I believe the song is supposed to have a psychedelic meaning. The "Spiritual Self" is who he is referring to. The belief that we may attain a spiritual state once we "Wake Up". Our spirit is our god and we are the children of our flesh. This is the belief system that he is expressing.
@@xintrk442 That's entirely subjective. For example, in Taoism, the Self IS the universe AND our Spirit/Godhead. In Hinduism, it goes further and says that the Self is putting on a play/act, which is everything in existence (universe/multiverse). So the view is that these are NOT seperate things, rather we only see them as seperate because of our human capacity.
I loved when Rob said that there where like four things going on at the same time. because that's exactly how tool works. It's every instrument doing different things and then perfectly fitting the accents of the time signatures. Tool is pure genius.
@@shawndogg69er the song is based after the concept of "blessed are the poor, the peaceful, the meek.." but taken in the actual real world, where they are actually doomed
I believe the meaning of Pneuma applied in this song is, creative spirit. Maynard was raised in a Christian family, and if you listen to the songs about his Mother he's not making a condemnation of Christianity, but of organized religion. Maynard has been cryptic about his beliefs, but most of the band talk about Sacred Geomotry and a lot of lyrics lead to that conclusion. I don't recall him condemning any religion or form of spirituality, which lead me to believe he puts forth the thought that there are many avenues to become closer to The Almighty. My thoughts on this song regarding one breath and wake up parallels, God breathing life into Adam to bring him to life, so in a sense we all originated from that One breath, if that make sense. Another informative reaction, and look forward to your next one.✌

I'm aware of the multiple definitions of the word and Biblically speaking It's used in a variety of ways. In hindsight, I could have used all the definitions to make my points because I touch on "Breath" and "The Spirit" www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&strongs=g4151
@@xKapnKrunch Double meanings in so many words he uses. I love it. Because it enables you to interpret it your own way as you see fit in so many instances. That is something I really appreciate with tool's and maynards lyrics.

The word pneuma comes from the Greek word for "that which is breathed or blown." The term took on multiple layers of meaning for the ancient Greeks and later for Judeo-Christian theologians and philosophers, as it became a word for "spirit" or "soul."
References to the "breathe" concept are found in the song's line We are born of one breath, one word, and the continued repetition of "spirit."
In the case of this song, the reference to the word is clearly oriented towards the yogic tradition, with guitar synthesized to sound like the Middle Eastern sitar and the light playing of Arabic goblet drum.
The song is a call to spiritual freedom and oneness:
Reach out and beyond
Wake up, remember
We are born of one breath, one word
We are all one spark, eyes full of wonder
Party On!

I completely agree. It's possibly one of my favorite of their entire catalog honesty.
@@Scitscat111 same here. it's definitely in my top 5 of their catalog.

Invincible is awesome! Whole album is really..... Culling Voices is maybe my favorite, currently.
Yes. Invincible definitely hits home for me because I am getting to a point in my life that I am getting older and learning to really accept it. To me the song speaks about how, especially men, feel young and have a hard time accepting when we are no longer as good, strong or whatever as we use to be. It’s a tough pill to swallow.

He does the intro on drums live, he uses these electronic drums called mandalas, that he hits and programs to make those noises, it’s really cool
Danny went to college for his art. His playstyle revolves around math and geometry. The interesting sound he has playing at the beginning of the song is played on one of eight electric pads, called Mandala pads.
Now that Neil Peart is gone from this world Danny is the new professor.
Sacred geometry
Thanks for mentioning Neil Peart, he’s a fucking God
These guys are some of the best technical musicians on the planet. Def can’t underestimate them.
Darko240 that’s where the got the name from, to be a Tool of the listeners and inspire change, or reflection.
Stoicism. Close but no cigar.
No it is not
These one referenced gnosticsm.
I don’t think Tool represents any specific religious world view. Their elements of Buddhism, Stoicism, and Gnosticism, and yes, Christianity present in this song.
No matter what religion you follow, if any at all, we all are born of one breath. We are all one foot nailed down to the ground, reaching out beyond.
Tool fans waited 13 years for this album to drop, and it was well worth it. All of the songs are amazing, but Descending has to be my favorite. Check it out.

Pneuma
(in Stoic thought) the vital spirit, soul, or creative force of a person.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
He's basically telling people that they need to let their light shine to the world, wake up to their potential, and to remember that we're all born of the same breath like you mentioned with regards to Adam's creation.
Beautiful interpretation
@@FelipeSxy01 by goth you are tiring. only read this single comment and I'd already rather hang out with the Satanists. you know the world 'pneuma' was the original pre-translation word for the Spirit part of the Holy Trinity, right dipshit? or are you that far away from your own religion?
you know what's a far more useful tool of conversion than this judgmental preaching bullshit you did here? just live your truth without needing to attack others. because when others see your perseverance and inner peace (your inner "light", if you will) in action, they will /ask you/ for your secrets, seek them out. this shit just makes us annoyed at your entire existence. for further example, churches walking the talk of wanting to be like Jesus by helping the poor without judgment or discrimination has done more to put love in my heart for the religion than anything. to quote a different Tool song, "Point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over."
Hey Pastor Rob, I hope you and your family are safe in these troubled times, greetings from Mexico.

Not to mention he does everything in one go with no click track as well. Pretty ridiculous drummer.

Yesssssssssss...was hoping you would do this. Happy thoughts for you and your family.
Always excited to see the notification pop up for you guys. Stay well!
I’m not a Christian but, I appreciate the fact that y’all have a open mind about music. Thank you
I grew up in a Christian church, and I am obsessed with Tool.
It baffles me that you can understand Christianity as well as you do and not see all these things that you were attributing to Maynards own believe system are so in alignment with Christianity
The spark
The Flame
the breath
The universal energy force that ties us all together.
Taoists call it the Tao.
Scientists currently call it the quantum universe/dark matter.
Hindus call it Brahman
Christians just call it the Trinity.
It is a Unitarian concept that transcends ALL religions and human perceptions

Pretty sure TOOL meant "Pneuma" in the "Soul" or "Spirit" context of the word as well. Great video guys.
William MacLellan another definition of pneuma is the creative force of a person.
@@Dustomatic yes, Spirit.
M Gonzalez but not spirit as in soul, spirit as it gusto
@@Dustomatic spirit and soul aren't the same.
Getting super-technical, PNEUMA is a loanword into English from the Greek, where it has multiple related meanings, such as breath, wind, spirit. Info on the wikipedia entry here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneuma
Hence the multiplicity of ways in which it can be taken especially in spiritual contexts.
Man, I love your Tool reactions! Keep up the good work pastor, stay safe out there.
I personally think the "child, release the light" part is a reference to their older song called Jimmy, which you should totally react to, in which he tells the child to to hold the light etc.

Starting to realize why they beat out Taylor Swift
Starting?
I realized that 7 months ago
Technically they only outsold her record when Fear Inoculum was released, I think Taylor Swift sold around 200K albums that weekend, but the previous weekend she sold somewhere around 800K, so overall she still sold way more. Pop is just way bigger than rock and metal, however unfortunate that may be lol
Shawn McDermott I think the main problem was that tool sold out and didn’t buy make enough albums. I had to buy mine off of eBay because there were none at my cd warehouse
@@Meister_Dwight that's because people like to hear catchy beats and lazy lyrics

Jesus Villarreal Maynard prefers words and themes with a WIDE semantic range. That way he can squish them as he pleases!
Congrats with 100k subs!!! So cool, that pastor love to listen music any ganres
That is Danny Carey, the greatest drummer alive.
Y'all need to do a part 2 with the drum cam. When you realize what Danny Carey is doing in the middle section, your mind will be blown.
I believe the song is supposed to have a psychedelic meaning. The "Spiritual Self" is who he is referring to. The belief that we may attain a spiritual state once we "Wake Up". Our spirit is our god and we are the children of our flesh. This is the belief system that he is expressing.
No it's not
How can "our" spirit, be "our" God?
Self is separate from the universe, so our spirit is not from us.
@@xintrk442 The belief that our spiritual self is "perfect".
Layers, space and unorthodox timings the tools of Tool.

The Doomed by A Perfect Circle is a good one too, lots of biblical verses in that one.

A retake and reversion of the beatitudes.. Pretty biblical even for a layman even if done so with an opposition and force of attention. Brilliant.
Love your videos and conversation. Greetings from southern Spain!
He's probably into perennial philosophy, but he bashes organized religion
What pastor says "I'm pretty stoked" lol. Rock on man. May the wind be always at your back.

Great reaction video, as always. You really picked the right song from this album. It's a great song, many people's favorite, and the lyrics are relevant for analysis by this wonderful UA-cam channel.
Since you've done both Tool and A Perfect Circle, I'd suggest Puscifer's The Humbling River. All three bands are projects by the same musician, Maynard James Keenan, and it'd be great to have you cover a song from all three.
Also, I know you're probably sick of Ghost requests, but check out their cover of Roky Erickson's If You Have Ghosts too if you get the chance!
It's selling the other musicians short to call Tool a project by MJK, and I'd say the same goes for APC. Puscifer is totally his brainchild though.
