    Ill never understand how Maynard was able to deliver those second and third choruses with THAT posture. It’s almost inhuman cuz being someone who sings, to get that projection you have to have movement of your diaphragm and he’s like suppressing all movement. It’s crazy.

    • @cannotwaittoseedavanteadam4301

      So much power in those choruses.

    • @Crivicus
      @Crivicus 3 роки тому +19

      He actually tricks you with that, the movement he is using is with his arms to the side of the lungs. He is basically playing his own lungs like bagpipes this is allowing him to squeeze more air than you would expect. Not particularly healthy but it does add to the performance he was projecting visually and it actually gives a slightly different sound that I suspect he was after.

    • @ZolFox
      @ZolFox 3 роки тому +1

      @@Crivicus i dunno...just, not to be a dick, or to create a point of argument or anything, but I just can’t see how that’s possible, being a singer myself for many years...musician for 21 years (guitar) and a tool fan for about that long as well (I even have 3 tool covers on guitar on my channel and I truly believe my Forty Six and 2 cover could be the only 100% correct one on the platform. I also went to college (university) for music theory and part of it involved singing and the techniques and talked a lot about the human anatomy and the way it contributes to how we sing...
      And I just can’t see that position working in the particular way you speak of. Then again, I can’t find an actual reason for it myself. I guess I’m just curious if that’s your personal opinion of why he does that or if you heard/read that somewhere? And if it’s credible...like where/what it was? I’m super curious.

    • @Crivicus

      @@ZolFox I read it somewhere but it was so long ago now that I don't really remember where, so definitely don't take it as fact.
      Like you, I have been a tool fan for a long time, but not being a singer when I read it I figured it kinda made sense and could explain how he manages it.
      I would love to know if you find out any more about it (like the source, because not remembering is going to bug me) and especially if what I have believed for so long is right or not.

    • @ZolFox
      @ZolFox 3 роки тому +4

      @@Crivicus oh cool thanks for being chill about my point of contention. Most people get all butt-hurt and pissed off lol. I’ll certainly look into it cuz the more I watch this performance (at least every time I come back to reply to comments and stuff) by the time he’s at full power in the chorus, one octave higher, he seems to do it even more, and I swear he even did this even more aggressively on their Lateralus tour, but from what I remember (cuz they just had to play The Pot for their second song and I was at THAT age, you know...we got really good weed lol, but yeah there’s some blanks in my memory from that show) he had completely abandoned that style of singing or whatever you wanna call it. And never did it with APC and I have yet to see Puscifer live...but there’s something interesting there and I wonder if anyone, maybe a vocal coach, has analyzed this to the extent I’d like to hear about it, cuz personally being a singer it intrigues me and although I don’t see myself trying this out necessarily...you never know. Right before I created my channel like ten years ago, I never thought I’d be doing vocal covers of metal tracks and be able to figure out how to do that screaming, but I worked at it and well, I still do it to this day. Not vocal covers. I’ve just done guitar covers for the past few years. But it’s the WHY that intrigues me so much. And if it’s just a like visual display like I assume is the case, how is he still able to project so much while restricting his diaphragm so drastically. It’s like a mindfuck. Or he’s an alien and the answer is as simple as that 👽 lol.

    What impresses me about this is how Maynard, rather than just standing there singing, gives himself to embody the character of the tortured soul of the alcoholic/addict. I think it give an emotional authenticity to the song.
    I always thought of the "whistle" line as a cry for Jesus to snap him out of his focus and grab his attention, as one might a dog that is doing something wrong. Or perhaps to whistle to mark the beginning of an event.

      Don't overthink it, you don't need to be religious to be happy. You can always find something that fills the void for you and make your own religion out of it! Personally I love music and I'm dedicating myself to it, as well as other forms of art. So find your passion and enjoy it as much as you can, and do everything you ever wanted to do, so you die with no regrets. And if you feel like there's nothing worth living for or empty, that's also alright. You don't need to force yourself to live like everyone else. Find your own way to enjoy the trivial things in life and live at the moment, don't overthink the future and get stressed out about it. Best wishes to you!

      @@adecentdelinquent8986I spent several years actively trying to disprove Yahweh's existence, but I was still searching for truth even if it ended up being Christianity. So much from other religions borrow from Christianity, throughout history. So much of the new age stuff now uses Christian terms and a new one "Christ consciousness". If the Bible were hyperlinked to referenced verses, it'd be the most hyperlinked document in history. What does that mean and why is it important? It means that it's one coherent work, in spite of the number of authors and years from Moses to John. Nature itself does indeed testify of God, just as the Bible says. Look up examples of the fibonacci sequence in nature. As far as God's law, it was unprecedented. Look at the cultures around Israel and how they conducted themselves. A lot of these other cultures had child sacrifice.. Israel had animal.. As one example on the superiority of God's law.. Compare Freud's id and Jung's shadow to the Bible verses saying no one is free from sin. Hopefully someone else can cite the one I tried to reference and others.. There's a few. To try to tie this off. All humanity must repent, acknowledge the sin nature and turn away from it, and believe that Jesus Christ is the final sacrifice for sin that covers all sin throughout humanity because of Jesus divine nature.

      He has no stage-fright issues, he's said it himself. Look at his performances in Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. He's said, numerous times, that he chooses to perform out of the limelight with Tool to give the other 3 members more presence on stage, and use his vocals simply as another instrument equal to Danny, Justin, and Adams' skilled musical roles. In other words, it's not about him, but the combined unit of 4 guys who know what they're doing.

That his addiction has him so strongly, that he's asking why he can't be sober as in UNABLE. Im VERY familiar with addiction and addicts and sobriety, thru programs and without a program. That's just one of the ways it spoke to me, personally. As far as Jesus and the whistle, the best my mind has made of it was him asking why Jesus hasn't " whistled" to get his attention and make him able/ willing to get off drugs/ alcohol. The great thing about lines like those is that they will mean something different to every addict, to every loved one of an addict and however it speaks to you, the point is that it speaks to you.

  • @matthewwatkins5925

    Idk if this has been said yet, it probably has, but his stage presence in this song is a direct representation of a drug addict who is at war with themselves wishing they could just be sober.
    On top of that, you are taking the double negative to literally. You have to think like an addict in this song. “Why can’t we not be sober” could translate to “why do I have to be intoxicated”, just feel the raw message of the song.

      Sidenote: I'm not technically a god fearing man. I love theology and everything related to it and from what I gathered is that if God loves us he wouldn't "force" us to live by his commandments. It's encouraged and will guarantee you a place in the big beautiful place in the sky but not a necessity for living a good life. He loves you so don't be sober for him. Be sober for yourself so you can live a fulfilling life. But that's just my two cents. I love hearing y'all's thoughts and beliefs about a song I took at face value most of the time. Cheers boys!

Maynard has said he usually leaves lyrics vague to let the listener understand their own interpretation. Song 1 The Grudge - Release your grudges before they drag you down
    Song 2 The Patient - Stay patient in the face of adversity
    Song 3 Schism - Communication is the most important part of human relationship
    Song 4 Parabola - Embrace each moment you're alive and breathing
    Song 5 Lateralus - Walking the line between the divine and human aspects of our true nature
    Song 6 Reflection - Let go of our ego to transcend into what is truly spiritual

    I think this song, as with most of Tool's work, has a dual meaning. One being of personal addiction but also about society's addiction to religion (opiate of the masses). He is crying out for something new and for people not to have blind faith in religious leaders that will take advantage of you. Also you can interpret the shadow at the beginning of the song as being religion. I do not totally agree with Maynard's view on religion but from what I have read on his experiences with his mother's church congregation I can understand why he thinks the way he does.

    Also, it would be incredible to see you guys listen to Sleeping Giant the band, a song called Tithemi, or literally any of their songs. Phinehas is another great christian metalcore band A song called "Hell Below" would be a great place to start
