More Maynard James Keenan? YES! Puscifer's "The Humbling River" Vocal ANALYSIS

- Kirk is a massive Tool fan. Without question. I even got him imaging of the sound waves from "Lateralus" printed on a metal plate to hang in his office. By proxy, I've become a pretty huge fan of Maynard James Keenan's voice, and am intimately familiar being able to hear Tool live a few years ago. So checking out his other projects, namely Puscifer, just seems like the thing to do... and this was your next most recommended!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Puscifer performing "The Humbling River" for the first time.

Every thing Maynard touches is gold.
Midas touch
Gold Jellö 🐖🐖🐖🐺
Agree. But I gotta try that wine… 🇨🇦
You ever listen to puscifer? Half the songs are trash/noise. But there are about 15-20 that are fantastic.
@@brendontompa-clinch2306 They're definitely different but I think it's more a creatively perverted mind spawning Puscifer's music. When it hits there's a magic to it but there's something crafty about all of it.
Puscifer ,Tool , A Perfect Circle... Maynard's voice is a journey to paradise.
Wait, I know all of those bands.
...Oh my god they share a SINGER? This is Maria Franz all over again! I can't believe this.
Shhh. He might hear you
Dont forget about RATMs know your enemy.
The story of this song is about Maynard’s time starting his wine vineyard out in the deserts of Arizona, it’s about his personal struggle with finding enough water in the area to feed his fields. The closest running body of water being the Verde River. This was written after years of him slowly working out a system to pump water to his farm. The River was his biggest struggle for his vineyard to succeed in such an arid area. It’s a love letter to the struggle of overcoming “The Humbling River”.
This is beautifully written, thank you for sharing this.. I’ve heard this before when I researched this song… but I think the way you wrote it is beautifully written! Well done
I love all of the songs on the album, we live about 35 minutes from Maynard's house so it's cool to hear songs about our river 💓
No it's not. Maynard did not write these lyrics. They are from the Manson forums.
My favourite part of this song is the change from saying “I” can’t cross the river, to “we’ll cross the river” it can’t be done alone. The hands of many must join
NO WAY! I was literally just listening to this song on my way home from work yesterday and thought, "Elizabeth needs to listen to this song". AND HERE WE ARE! How crazy the universe is.
I love this song, but honestly there's not a lot going on vocally to make for a great reaction video like Elizabeth does best. Something like The Mission would make for a much more interesting reaction.
One of the best songs around….not enough people know about Puscifer.
I 100% agree with this….it’s kinda sad 😕
Fun Fact: this song was used for the trailer for the game Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, and it’s how I discovered this band.
One of the rare times someone says “fun fact” and offers something worth reading - thank you!
Same, I’ve loved this song for years and only just recently found out that Maynard is the one that sings it lol
That was the first time I heard Puscifer. I've been a Tool fan and a Maynard fan for nearly 30 years and a Transformer fan for longer. It's such an amazing trailer.
Their music has also been used in Yellowstone; can’t recall if it was this song though.
They were also featured on the soundtrack of one of the Underworld movies, and one of the SAW movies. That's how I discovered them in 2006ish
The entire album of "Conditions of my Parole" is amazing start to finish. The live performance of it was top tier.
I came here to say this exact thing! Probably one of my favorite albums of any kind, ever. Toma would be a good choice to here a more aggressive Maynard vocal sound within the Puscifer catalog.
@@JeffSmithbureau13 Toma, Money Shot, The Undertaker (maybe the Versatile version) are my picks for that
“What is Puscifer” is one of my favorite live performances. They just hit in a way the studio versions don’t.
@@jambulance the v is for versatile version of the undertaker is perfection.... I have played that song every day since it came out
"Tumbleweed" still has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. Her voice is absolutely amazing, let alone on that song.
I had the pleasure of seeing this live. Devastatingly beautiful. I stood there, eyes closed, unable to move, tears in my eyes. I was so moved by that performance.
Me Too! Amazing.
Maynard wrote this about a personal struggle, but in his typical style, he's made the relaying of the story so insanely epic that it hits you right in the deepest recesses of your brain. You start to think of your hardest personal struggles and even beyond that, some of the hardest struggles of humanity itself, and it brings about that overwhelming feeling of humility and emptying of self..
Please do more Puscifer after this!! Green Valley is an amazing one.
Agreed; amazing song 🥰
The live version is amazing!
Amazing! Especially with Monsoons right after on the album. Great back-to-back tracks
That whole album is fantastic
One of the all-time great songs
I don't see anyone mentioning this. I wanted to point out that Maynard's son Devo is both singing background vocals and playing cello on this.
One of my favorite things about this song is how the vocal goes from a single voice, to a binary, to essentially a multitude....only to then collapse back down to a single voice, but one that moves all around the soundscape like the multitude did. Signifying a growth of the self from isolation to communal.
When they do that double harmony, the sound not only pans left and right but it also starts at the top of your head and it drops to the bottom of your head. This is the first time I have ever heard anything like that I've heard the left to right pan but never ever up or down. This is absolutely incredible.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE !!!!!
Puscifer is incredible, seen them 3 times live and it’s a MUST do. Super warm and intimate, usually in a cozy high school auditorium or theater.
That harmony is absolutely enchanting . Almost like a walk on air if you will .
When they play live, they have smoke that rolls out across the bottom of the stage. It's very ethereal.
@@t0myTTV
Sounds cool . Had a chance to see tool but had to pass it up . Life ups and downs prevented it .
Enchanting. Yes! Thank you.
One day there'll be a tea time interview with Maynard or Carina...i can feel it.
And I will be there watching being glad❤
Maynard has given me musical goosebumps more than any other artist I’ve ever listened to…
Hi Beth! I just want to tell you a fun fact: two months ago you did your first analysis of Deftones just a week after I discovered them and was completely blown away by them, and I was amazed at the synchronicity between us. And guess what?? Four days ago I discovered Puscifer and I was completely blown away by them, and today I check your channel and there it is! =)))
I freaking love this band. And this is one of my favorite songs. Puscifer is definitely a must on anyone's playlist.
Maynard is infamous for playing with time signatures. Him and the artists he plays with
This song makes me cry sometimes just a life lesson.
I’ve been a fan of Puscifer from V is for vagina and it’s amazing how much they’ve changed and evolved since then. And the voice harmony in this just gives me chills.
Then again, tool and perfect circle have also evolved so very much from their debut recordings.
I've always loved this song. This one has seemed to me to be my fight with depression. I've done all these things, but I can't beat this one thing.
This was my first time listening to Puscifer! I was happy to share the first time experience with you!
Confuses me why this hasn't gotten more popular on the radio.
I feel like I've waited so long for this one! One of my favorite Puscifer songs, next to Momma Sed (alive at club nokia).
The new momma said version got me completely hooked in the whole performance.
Puscifer did a beautiful song with more challenging vocals then this called Potions! You should definitely do that one next🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊!!! Loved the song and the video of course ❤! Please keep up the amazing job❤❤❤❤❤!!!
Seconded!
Yes! Potions is the best ❤
Potions is my fav Puscifer tune.
This is the first song I've learned to play on my guitar and also sing at the same time, an absolutely beautiful song
Carina is just amazing in this song. She’s just incredible in Puscifer.
The voice of one, female male equal in delivery. Fascinating
PLEASE go see Puscifer live, the show is an absolutely transcendent, cathartic, masterpiece of art. They're on tour very soon.
Instantly had to like this video before it even started. This song has a special place in my heart after losing one of my online friends through suicide and everytime I think of this song, it resonates with me and makes me think about him. I never got to meet him in person, but from the times I talked to him while playing games together along with more of his friends were always special. I can’t wait to finally meet him someday 🥺♥️😔🕊️
Elizabeth nailed it. It's the mastery of the craft and all of the nuances that makes me adore puscifer.
The time signatures, like the harmonies, are meandering, like the river. Humbling.
By far my favorite from Puscifer. I actually live right down the street from one of the stores and about an hour and a half away from Jerome, AZ and the original one. I always love it when Maynard's in town. All three bands move me and completely different ways.
Maynard"s fiftieth birthday party. Cinquenta, has a live version with his son on cello.
This was definitely my favorite vocal performance on this album
Maynard kind of embraced the Cowboy life when he moved to Arizona and started a winery. He lives in Gerome Arizona. Aenima was about him leaving LA and watching it fall in the ocean.
I'm enthralled that you've done a reaction to this song!!! This is my all-time favorite song! IMHO the river is the river Stix.
When i first heard carina live in brighton uk around 2001 she had a real passion and energy to her voice that night got straight up and got the ep once finished fast fwd i enjoyed the CDs but always was stuck wanting a live album fast fwd once she moved to the us she slipped away from view as i wasnt really enjoying music as much from 2010 onwards. Since youtube was the go to for testing new music for me and the charismatic voice has helped relight my fire and then the remedy pops up and i hear its maynard (excellent) and carina so yes i had a (yes it is moment) so thank you @thecharismaticvoice i was so pleased she had connected with maynard. Also then dived in puscifer and early winters (carinas other project), this was a great example of picking yourself backup when labels let you down and coming back for the win
I spent a little time tapping this out at my desk and I think the time signature goes 3/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/4 (I don't think it works as two 3/4 phrases particularly when they come to it in the main refrain of "and together we'll cross the river" which comes in on the third beat rather than the fourth) and then repeats. The difference between that and the 7/4s you mentioned is more notable in the first half of the song where the vocals only come in on the 4/4 sections. In the back half, the right pan is taking the 3/4 but sings it over four beats, so you have that overlap with the left pan that makes the counterpoint feel almost like singing in the round. This was a really cool song and one I hadn't listened to before, so thanks for sharing it with me.
Puscifer is a different beast than the other two. There are some songs that make me laugh and others that really resonate in my heart. Definitely explore songs on different albums to get the full view of them, and their voices are gorgeous together.
Wow I got goosebumps on that . Right up my spine . Whoooooo . Wow that was cool that mixing together .
This song is straight up beautiful!
And yes Maynard is the greatest gift we have on the earth.
This is the most beautiful and sad song🖤
"I'm going to go back to the beginning"
I can't complain about that
I, too have been taken by this band. I heard about them long ago when they were still new but never heard them until yesterday digging into Maynard stuff after being reminded of my appreciation for Tool when I got to work as stage hand on their show on my second night on the job. I watched one of their concerts, and WOW. This is the kind of band I've always liked best, and it fuses the Kate Bush side with some Johnny Cash and Tool. It's almost like if Kate Bush were in the Cure with just a touch of Rush sauce added to the drums.
My introduction to this song was as the background music for a fan made trailer for the first Dark Souls game. It just fit so well with the dark and brooding atmosphere of the game. The edits in the trailer were even timed to fit well with the song, almost like they were ment to be together.
I've loved this song ever since.
alt-f dark souls to see if anyone said this.
I love your facial expressions! Especially your eyebrows and beautiful smile 😊
This song reminds me of Pet from the APC album Thirteenth Step, so much that I question whether there isn't a tie between the two. Like each song is from the perspective of fathers of sons of opposing enemy nations.
This is on the EP C is for, and I missed it cause it was an EP not a full album, but yeah, thinking about getting it now! One of my favorites is called Grand Canyon from the album Money Shot, I would highly recommend that one!
I really need to check out more Puscifer. I've loved Indigo Children for years, specifically the JLE Dub, but never really heard much other stuff until recently. Any time I had I was always impressed and kept thinking "I need to check out more!" and the just never got to it...
This one is special. A mantra to live by
Haunting, compelling, spiritual...
I saw them live last year. With the assistance of some 🍄... this song really hit deep. The way maynard sings this live is very beautiful and intense.
That will make great songs transcendent ;-)
I saw Tool on mushrooms like 10 years ago. Almost gave me a heart attack, but it was the best thing I ever saw
You and me both. It felt like the show was intented to be seen on mushies. Since then I took a very deep journey that all started when bullet train started playing.....just along for the ride lol
Ya I didn't expect Puscifer to be even close to Tool as far as a live show. I think the smaller venue helped alot. I peaked during Humbling River and it might as well have been God singing to me lol. There a high quality audio recording of an entire set from the last tour. It's the closest I've come to recreating that concert lol.
You absolutely should check out when Maynard joined Tori Amos for her song Muhammad My Friend. Their voices together are magic.
This has always been my favorite song of theirs. Thank you so much for listening to it. I've been hoping you would.
My pleasure! ❤️
The instrumentation of this song, like most of their songs, is so sophisticated. It’s bold yet subtle at the same time. This band is so talented, so creative, so unique. They’re an incredible band! One of my favorites, for sure.
BTW, have you ever done a breakdown of any of Jeff Buckley’s songs? If you haven’t may I suggest, highly recommend even, doing the song “Grace” off of the album Grace. It’s an incredible song and his vocals are outstanding! His vocal style is so unique I think it will blow you away.
My interpretation of this song has evolved the more times I have listened to it. From my perspective, the River symbolizes a barrier between the material world and whatever is beyond. Be that through death, ascension, or conscious evolution. From an individual standpoint, "crossing the river" becomes an impossible feat when portraying one's self from a point of hubris and ego. This becomes more apparent when the "angel" answers with "open your heart and hands, my son, or you'll never make it over the river." From a fully human evolution standpoint, this song, to me, represents an even deeper meaning for the entire human species. "The hands of the many must join as one, and together we'll cross the river." represents the next phase of our species' conscious evolution. It cannot be done alone, but will take the understanding, strength, humbled openness, and love for We, as a species, to take the next step in our cosmic journey.
Ok this lines up very closely to my interpretation regarding an evolutionary step that we are no where near ready for. Your comment however is much more articulate than mine 😀
Excellent reaction video again Elizabeth, thanks so much for that! :) You should totaly check ''Momma Sed'' from Puscifer also, or the version of '' Rocket Man'' that Maynard done, it's in the same range and I'm sure you'll love it!
One of my favorite songs. Thanks for this one
Love this song
CARINA brings out the best in MAYNARD. ✌️
Especially in Cuntry Boner
TooL brings out the best in Maynard
Both true
@@maneotis4g63t two things can be true at the same time 🎉😂🤘🌀
Carina brings out the beautiful sides of his voice and balance him. Tool lets him flex his passion and anger
Puscifer to me is Desert trip music, where the feeling of the music outweighs the beautifully played music.
Thank you so much for this! Conditions of My Parole is one my top favorite albums of all time. Every single track is awfully beautiful. (Okay, the title track is "only" ridiculously fun.) My favorite song is "Green Valley" with all the other tracks as a cumulative close second. 😁
❤ this song , surprisingly not used on something like 1883
I was lucky enough to catch their last show, a hometown show so to speak @ Prescott Community College theater & it was totally indescribable.
Some art is just on a whole other level. Musically & visually, they’ve got an artistic vision that crosses over into impacting multiple senses.
Don’t miss them live if & when they play nearby. 💜
I'm so sad I didn't get to go to that one! I was in the process of moving here at the time, and didn't move into the Verde Valley until December so I wasn't able to go. It's so cool that they played there rather than somewhere in Phoenix. 😊
I would love to see you look at A Perfect Circle. Maybe start with The Outsider. It's got a lot going on and is a good mix of what Maynard can do vocally. There's also a bit in the very beginning that sounds like it's off key but somehow works well.
Edit: I just watched a bit of the music video.... don't watch that, lol. It's very distracting.
Probably my favourite their song
Wow, this is a total discovery for me. My old "metalhead" self (turning 41 next month...) thank you for that. Definitely going to have a look at Puscifer in the coming days. Can you believe I don't recall in all my 40yrs on earth, ever listening to a Tool song ? 😫
Well... Usually when it does not "fit" into my "type" of music, I just skip it completely... Oh the amount of little gems I picked up here and there in the recent years because I had another go... 😁 And of course, channels like yours are a pretty good source for those gems.
Speaking of metal...I've seen a few (quite a lot actually) of your reactions and I thing this little gem of a band might please your ears : "Visions Of Atlantis" Specially the "Pirates" album... "Master Of The Hurricane" is a 7 minutes musical masterpiece... It's kind of a "style blend" between Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation and a touch of "old Kamelot" with Roy Khan... It's... There's no words to describe it... It's that good... Or i'm just too old for proper words... 😂
Also... Are you ready for Diablo 4 ? That Lilith statue/"mewants"/shut_up_and_take_my_money/bust... is jaw dropping beautiful back there 😮 😈😁
Hell Yeah!!!! I love this song so much!
This is my favorite song from Puscifer. I know nothing about about its origins, but it always makes me think of Vikings :)
I have been waiting for this one since you first started doing Maynard's stuff! I am so stoked for this!
Hello dear Elizabeth. I'm really impressed with how much feeling and enthusiasm you judge singers. You listen to music from all areas with total impartiality and you hit the nail on the head (is a German expression). I am a great admirer of yours and I hope that you will become active again yourself, either in a band or as a solo artist! so that i can experience you live with your wonderful voice and your enchanting appearance. greetings from Limburg an der Lahn near Frankfurt. your Andi
-Grand Canyon
-Green valley
are both gems 💎
Damn the timing on this is impeccable. I just rediscovered this song after replaying Fall of Cybertron and letting it sit in that opening movie on the menu
Thanks! Please do more puscifer!
I love how you always talk about time signatures. As a fellow musician, it speaks to my soul. Wonderful song choice.
This is my favorite song from Puscifer. So beautiful lyrics and his voice. Also the music. Heavenly touching soul.
Suggestion: Red Handed Denial - “Father Said” (Lauren Babic live one take performance) Much more recent version of Lauren who can sing beautifully and scream with the best of them. The lyrics are very personal to her too and is worth listening for both her voice and the story.
I love your Lilith statue in the background of your videos. All hail the Mother of Demons. Also love the breakdown too.
How am I crying on every single video of yours that I watch... Thank you for all the emotions!
Right or wrong I find this to be one of the best and prettiest modern days Hymns written.
Seeing them do this song live is amazing. By far one of the best live bands out there. Love a good Puscifer show.
this notification just made my day
THIS is not a song I thought I would see on this channel! So glad to see more of Maynard, especially some of his more obscure work! Great video as always.
I love that song, have heard it so many times, beautiful gem of a song... you should try "potions" too, which has NIN vibes. Puscifer is freaking cool, live they are even better... and cool taste for music you've got. It's always fun to see your videos.
Now we just need some A Perfect Circle
Man I absolutely love the different stuff Maynard does his voice!
Also, while it's a bit different than Puscifer, anything by Gojira is absolutely fantastic and definitely worth a look. Plus they're hands down one of the best live bands I've ever witnessed
100% agree. My friend had me join him at a show he said he liked this bad called Gojira and I was uhh okay. It was the best live band I’ve ever seen. The energy was unreal they fly. Instantly became a fan that day. Honestly I liked the live stuff better than the albums
Another vote for Gojira. I would suggest, "The Way of All Flesh". Specifically the live performance of it at the Garorock Festival 2009, I think it's the same performance they use for the DVD "The Flesh Alive".
Brilliance to the ear. I love this song sooo much. Peace.
Love to see more MJK representation! I’d love to see a deep dive into some of TOOL’s newest album, with some suggestions being “7empest” or “pneuma”
Not knocking Maynard at all but Fear Inoculum is the least impressive vocals of any Tool album. So why suggest for a vocal channel?
@@love2chiefs Totally disagree, the vocals have aged with Maynard in that album. Fear Inoculum stands in its own league, and is a masterpiece.
@@Phyto. vocals are still great and I love the album. It's a natural progression. Still...for a vocal analysis not a reaction channel, my point stands.
There's the UA-cam rabbit hole, and there's The Charismatic Voice rabbit hole. Once I start watching one, I can't stop...
I love it when you react to anything Maynard’s does. Thank you so much 😊
I suggested this WAY back when MJK was still pretty new to you! SO cool to see you react to this one. Beautiful song!!
If you haven't seen Blood Into Wine, you really should. Lots of Puscifer music but it is just an incredibly well produced documentary about his winemaking in Arizona. There is definitely talk about the music but his connection to earth is on display and very relatable. He's a wise poet.
I'd love a deep dive into time signatures. I'm sure it's why Maynard"s music is so different and touches so deep.
It's enchanting and beautiful, but live at a concert, this song fills you up and moves your soul.
