From the beginning of her story I honestly feel like its all a lie. After every incident in my last relationship I had some type of bruise or scratch. That's what I think. Proven to use drugs (yes Adderall is a mind altering drug - the amt missing WOW) I think he was probably abusive meaning MENTALLY, is what it sounds more like then abusive. Add someone taking drugs to being in a relationship w an unstable, mentally untreated illness, obsessed woman & then being mentally abused by ur significant other, its not going to turn out good!! The going back and forth playing w someone's emotions who is this Unstable (that he did recognize) - sadly ended horribly who believed in her head he deserved this ending! I'm sure everyone has heard I'd rather be physically abuse then mentally! I'm NOT giving her a pass but she needed help & he states to others how she's crazy & obviously saw for awhile (by his statements) she was capable of doing something crazy! YES people DEFINITLY can use SOMEONES unstable emotional state against them & I think he did that; not realizing he was dealing w a woman WHO would & DID feel (in her mind) he deserved to die. I think sentencing was fair & I hope she gets the help she needs. If she is found to be rebilitated she should get out BUT if NOT she needs to stay where she can't hurt anyone else.

I'm from a tiny, southern town where the whole community knew your business. I dated my first husband (also from this town) for three years before we were married. The moment a ring was on my finger and I shared a home with him...he changed. I became chattel. For a year I was abused physically, mentally and emotionally. I asked repeatedly that we seek counseling, which he was completely opposed to. My friends weren't allowed to come over. This was before cell phones and pc's. If we went out, it was to a nasty bar where HIS friends were waiting. He would remove a spark plug from my car so it wouldn't start; leaving me stuck in our home while he was at work. He was six feet five inches tall and brawny. I was five feet five inches tall and not quite 115 pounds. The day I told him I was getting the hell out of there and was about to walk out the front door, he grabbed a loaded shotgun from the spare bedroom, chased me down the hallway, knocked me to the floor and placed the barrel between my thighs. He made it known that if he couldn't have me, nobody could. Why he didn't shoot me I will never know. As soon as he turned away from me I was up and out the front door. Never did I have a thought to return to that madness. Nor did I ever think to kill him for his abuse, though I had plenty of opportunities. The only people who keep returning to violent situations are usually the ones with the upper hand. I believe Shayna was a stalker who believed as my ex did. If she couldn't have Ryan, she'd make sure nobody would. These people feel justified.

hey rachel, I just wanted to throw in there that while idealization (obsessing) in BPD is a well known trait, to the degree of the examples you presented would be somebody untreated and rather severe. more common types of those attachments are to friends, romantic interests, and even family (idealization can also be platonic). idealization is almost always followed by devaluation, which is flipping to the complete opposite side and starting to resent or even hate somebody when they do not live up to the elevated expectations idealization needs. you did fantastic! a lot of people with BPD just already tend to be thrown into a generalization unintentionally because the clarification between what is severe and what is not isn’t made, and sadly sometimes that can be damaging to those in treatment who have learned how to overcome that symptom when it’s how others expect them to be. there’s also a lot of stigma in the field, i’ve even seen it come from college professors, that’s mostly why i just wanted to share some more info. shayna is without a doubt somebody who has a very very extreme case and situation. another tragic example of why treatment for mental health is essential. Keep up the good work!!

  • @LiaMari

Ryan’s behavior, in my opinion, was self defense.
I’ve been in his shoes, though I wasn’t killed.
Imagine, you’ve tried everything, to get someone out of your life, and they somehow get a key to your home anyway.
Imagine telling someone in every conceivable way you don’t love them, and they continue to text incessantly, call incessantly, and show up at your work, parties, etc.
Ryan’s mistake was not reporting her.
    From the outside looking in,
    He got home,
    She was there,
He told her to leave and told her off, she refused.
He picks her up and removes her from him home,
She asks to come in to get her things, promising it over.
He opens the door, she grabs his gun from his ankle holster.
    Things go sideways from there.
Men don’t report abuse, or stalkers very often, maybe a pride thing, as Ryan said, “I can handle this.”
They don’t ever think for a moment that this tiny chick could hurt them.
As for taking her back, repeatedly, that’s the tesseract.
They show up, and won’t leave, and won’t stop talking until you agree, and you cave in for the day/night, telling yourself, when they leave in the morning, you’re done.
    Classic abuse
    Classic.
I don’t consider Ryan’s words or actions as abusive, I see it as utter frustration, reacting to her psychotic drama of the moment. I see his words and actions and think, she drove him to it. People can only take so much crazy before they reach the end of their rope. He had to have been a decent guy, or he’d have beaten the shit out of her, at least once.
    Seriously,
    Imagine,
    Breaking up with someone,
    You’re done
    It’s over,
    You’ve got a big date,
    You come home to change,
And the psycho ex is In Your House!
I guess I’d be calling them a POS too and if I had the strength, I’d toss them into the hall as well.
    He should have called police.
He did talk to everyone he knew,
He did everything he could to get rid of her.
    She wouldn’t stop.
    For sure,
She should not ever be released.
