Rachel, thank you for covering a case! It is important for people to understand that strong, confident women are also victims of abuse. I know, I was one of them. No one would have ever thought I would tolerate abuse from anyone, including me until it happened to me. Abusers break you mentally and emotionally far before the break you physically and they know how to tap your deepest fears and weaknesses. This woman was a bright light and he couldn’t stand to see her shine.

Karabo was a beautiful young woman with a beautiful soul. I do not know enough about South African culture to comment on any ritual, but this horrific death has all the signs of domestic violence. It is hard to comprehend a woman cutting her own throat when simply piercing the jugular or cutting her wrists would accomplish the same sad outcome. I was impressed by the respectful courtroom decorum and the stoicism and composure displayed by the members of her family and of the community that loved her. We don't always see that sort of grace in US courtrooms. I hope her family feels a little less pain with each passing day and that they are constantly reminded of how amazing she was. She deserved so much better than what that monster did to her.

Right. It happens too much. Men who do these things seldom get enough punishment and not only in South Africa there is definitely world wide problem of Domestic violence and gender based violence. In the US they often don't give them nearly long enough sentences and that is if they are even given prison time at all and they don't just give them basically a warning and probation. It's very disrespectful to the victims of these crimes. It's like the judge is saying "you don't matter" to them.

    She deserved so much more.
In my opinion, I believe this was no ritual killing or sacrifice. He burned her body thinking the evidence against him would be destroyed as well. He thought he was the smartest guy in the room, but as we learn time and time again, it doesn't take much in the brain dept to make a lot of money or live the flashy life.. many total idiots have accomplished this. 🙄
No, this was a guy who's pride, ego and self inflated status couldn't allow this beautiful woman to leave, or live life on her terms alongside him.
He wanted total, unconditional control over her, and when she began to get over this relationship, and realize the only person he truly loved was himself, she woke from the haze she had been in, and began getting her feet under her. The blinders came off and she was ready to be on her own again.
He was not ready for this and didn't think she'd ever grow out of this relationship, and he finally did something about it.
It's so easy to convince yourself that things will change, this was the last time, etc.. but this is rarely, if ever, the case.
The moment someone shows you who they really are, believe them. Run the other way..

It's one of the worst killings to pass away from is necklace killings. It's something that's done in South Africa. Normally, the person is still alive .

That advertisement that he filmed for his company was not confidence inspiring for a customer, client, or investor at all lol. Or at least it shouldn't have been. I got major internet scam vibes from it. Like the feeling that they are romance scamners or investment scammers etc....

It's just so sad how the South African authorities take time to actually investigate some visibly triggering and disturbing cases and the fact that they continued to let him try to paint this young lady a bad person and him changing his story multiple times is crazy to me, like how does that even happen?, it's clear that he's been lying and changing his story but they continue letting him say one more crazy and nonsensical story about the incident, and that he was only charged for homicide(I'm not sure), but regardless of me not being sure I just feel like they'd do that in South Africa, and I also feel like they could easily be bribed to make the case to look cold while there's a lot of evidence being destroyed in the process.

I got my ribs kicked in and broken by a guy but bc I was t dating or living with him they put it in the newspaper as a "fight" btwn a 19 yr old woman and a 24 year old man and let him go. He ended up doing prison time for rape years later. They never cared what happened to me in the corrupt city im from. It makes me sick wondering how many other women haven't gotten Justice here and how many have been victims of the result of cops not caring about prior reports. One guy from the east side (Detroit) moved here and went to my middle school. He broke my nose and sexually assaulted two girls, and they did nothing till after he broke a boy's jaw. It angers me to see how poorly we are treated here, and especially other countries that are even worse to the female population .

Sadly, this is the standard of the South African Police Service. I once reported my cellphone being stolen for insurance purposes and while taking my statement the police officer asked if it was on contract, which I confirmed and she then refused to further take my statement and scolded me for wasting her time when I could just upgrade 😂

I visited Joburg last year for a few days during my trip to South Africa. Sadly I witnessed a man pass away due to a collision with a vehicle and his bicycle. Someone was very poorly and incorrectly trying to do CPR on the man but it was pretty clearly too late :( this is the second time I have seen a cyclist killed by a motorist while abroad.

I wish he'd gotten life in prison but maybe that was the maximum sentence there. Regardless I agree that judge was awesome and told it like it is. This guy is a complete monster and "devil in disguise" for sure (& not even a very good disguise at that). 👹

I am from South Africa and this is a daily occurrence. My lady friend is also a black lady. She kept on telling us that her brother is dangerous and she was scared of him. He's a drug dealer and his very violent. We went to the Police on a number of occasions. The police did nothing to protect her as according to them his not a threat. 2 years ago she got stabbed to death by her own brother. Our law even states. You are not allowed to shoot if someone is in your yard as you don't know if he's a threat or if his armed. What's he doing in your yard in the first place? We have the highest gender-based violence in the world.
They have the nerve to blame apartheid. We didn't have this in apartheid. Old black people come to me and say., in apartheid they had food, they had work and they had a roof over their heads. Now they have nothing. The Government is so corrupt that they want to take away old people's pensions so they can steal more. Our old Power CEO went to Netherlands for help and they accused him of racism because he went to white people for help. Now that is he gone. the New CEO did the same and his God's gift to everyone. They wanted to use our old CEO to make an example of someone so they don't take responsibility. He exposed them for what they are in an interview and he had to leave the country because the Government could not handle the truth.
Only thing that will save this country is Capital punishment. I am not for the death penalty because there are people wrongly convicted. The Government's argument is that they have human rights. What about the victims. Where was the humanity when he brutally raped and murdered that innocent child or woman? They got locked up for couple years and then get released other because the jail is over crowded or good behavior. South Africa Doesn't need a South African Government because we have to much history. We need a 3rd party Government Govern't by an International party...
