Such a heartbreaking, and insanely frustrating, case to hear about. It’s very hard to hear how little interest police had from jump. To send a mother running in circles and STILL no law enforcement branch truly taking responsibility for the investigation - is insane. Also, I so so appreciate you covering POC’s cases because it is true that we don’t get the same coverage, attention, or commitment in an investigation. You’re a gem!

I'm a CSI who's currently in grad school for forensic science and I have to say, you're my favorite true crime channel! I get so excited when I see that you've uploaded. I love hearing your input, thoughts, and theories. You cover lesser known cases and you're very respectful. Thank you, seriously! It's one thing to say that the cops dropped the ball on a case, because unfortunately, it seems to happen a lot in these cases. But there's a specific channel I used to watch that just absolutely trashed the csi/forensic aspect of cases every chance they got and it really rubbed me the wrong way. Especially, because there is only so much that the public knows. It's pretty infuriating hearing someone with no forensic background, other than making true crime youtube videos, shit talk professionals who have been educated for many, many years and then go on to act like they could have done something differently to solve the case. Anyways, I'm just ranting lol.
One thing I wanted to mention, I don't think that the blanket thing necessarily rules out the serial killer. I honestly think if a blanket was there, then that's what he would have used. Honestly, it seems like whatever is convenient at the time is what victims tend to be disposed in. You raised good points, like always, of course, but I don't think the serial killer should be ruled out just based on the blanket.
Second, I totally understand where you're coming from by saying it's suspicious that the ex boyfriend didn't show any concern about the case. You stated you're the type of person who would want to help out anyway that they could, regardless of how the relationship ended or how long it lasted, etc. I'm the same way! But I think there's a lot of people out there who would not involve themselves - for various different reasons. Authorities are intimidating, whether you use or not. Investigations are also extremely intimidating. Also, we don't know if the ex may have any disorders that may result in him being avoidant or not the best at picking up on social cues. Heroin addiction is traumatic, on its own, we don't know what he may have experienced during his time using. On the topic of heroin, I also think it's highly unlikely that he murdered her while high. Heroin isn't really like that. I could not see someone murdering someone else while high on heroin. I could, however, see an accidental overdose and hiding the body to not get in trouble - but that doesn't seem to apply to this case.
Besides the fact that Brandon & Stevie were supposed to meet up that day, there really isn't much to suggest that it was him. NYC is insane, there are SO many people. She could have easily come into contact with the wrong person that day. Regardless, it is heartbreaking and I feel horrible for her family.
Amazing job, as always, covering the case, Rachel! I love learning about cases from you. Good luck in med school!!!

@Erica M Lmao why would I lie? What would I benefit from lying to a bunch of strangers on the internet? My insight on drug use/heroin was just that... MY insight...MY opinion... as far as MY own personal knowledge about the subject of heroin extends. My own personal knowledge is based off my experience working as an emt. Every person I have ever been around that has been under the influence of heroin has been completely unresponsive with a pulse so weak and slow that its undetectable and you think that it might be too late, but you hope for the sake of their children crying in the background that it's not. Only signs of life appear, if you're lucky, after administering narcan. So if you ask me, it does not really seem like someone in that state would be capable of committing homicide. I do know that opiate use/withdrawals can cause anger and violent outbursts, but like I said I was talking about someone who was actively under the influence. Young? I'm 26. Naive? About the violent tendencies while under the influence of heroin? I might be. About forensics? The two bachelors degrees and the soon to be doctorate in forensic science seem to suggest otherwise.

I live in a suburb of Chicago, IL and one time I hadn’t seen or heard from my mother in like 4 days. At that point I decided to file a missing persons report. Do you know what the police told me? They asked me why I had waited so long to report her missing, I told them I assumed I had to wait at least 24-48 hours because she’s an adult. They told me being an adult doesn’t matter, as soon as you suspect someone is actually missing you can and should immediately report it. It’s so weird how different cities and states approach things so differently.

When your addicted you can’t bother or focus on anything. And aren’t trying to converse with police willingly. He is the most likely suspect thou bc he was her ex and she was headed that way. Do you think she was low key using and maybe went home to use and he got her the stuff and she did too much? He freaked out and did what he did. Like. I’m not knocking this lovely woman. My sister is an opiate addict. And this stuff happens. It’s hard for me to reconcile the fact that she would hang with addicts without herself using. It’s really not fun to hang with addicts and she either had a lot of patience with her friends who did use or she was also using.

If he's dealing with a 4 year addiction to opiates when they met, it's not likely using would make him 'forget completely' anything (and thus be able to hide it from police better). The way that opioids work with body chemistry, tolerance builds quickly, and they don't really cause the type of total blackouts seen in alcohol to seasoned users to begin with. . . And as someone in recovery, being connected at all to the opioid epidemic gets you very accustomed to losing ppl. . . Eventually it starts to effect you less than the average person. I'm not saying there's absolutely nothing sketchy about his behavior, but just wanted to shed some light on that, especially when they'd only even known each other for 1-2 yrs.

I have a very painful, permanent health issue. I've been on suboxone since January. I was on 2 morphine & 5 vicodin a day before that for over a decade. During this time I earned an associate degree & 2 bachelor's degrees. I remember everything.
Having genuine physical pain does change the way opioids effect the body (which is why I am always fighting for chronic pain patients to be separated from acute pain patients, which is where addiction usually becomes an issue. Dependence either way, but addiction is different). But I can't imagine it just causing random blackouts of major events.

Just speaking from personal experience, I have avoidance personality due to trauma/c-PTSD. I don't find it strange that he separated himself from the entire situation. Hes already self medicating probably from some sort of past trauma, people were looking at him as a suspect, etc. It could be that he just couldn't handle the weight of that personal loss/trauma. I'm not saying he's not involved, even tho the police did, we can look at their track record on this case alone to see why there might be questions.
This could very well be crime of opportunity. I have to wonder if the other woman's body is connected to her case? What her family are going thru is so heart breaking. I hope they find peace, and answers.

I wish all police would act as though the missing person was their relative. I bet they wouldn't miss a beat with a case. It is so so sad that police always assume that the missing person is not missing yet. I wish they would change their protocol or guidelines regarding these cases. As for this one, I wonder if the police even kept what she was wrapped in. I appreciate that you dig deep and think of all sides to a case. I befriended Stevie during my time at Occupy Wall Street. She was so funny & ethereal. Her disappearance haunted me. I’m going to respect her family & not reveal too much, but it’s known around the downtown scene that Brandon is aggressive, manipulative, & abusive. She was vulnerable as it was, so that’s why he was able to weasel his way into her life. This isn’t about “bashing addicts”. I’ve known so many addicts who didn’t go out of their way to harm others. I appreciate this video and that you’re trying to raise awareness. People know more than what they’re willing to reveal. Hey Rachel, I was wondering if you could do a video on the missing Australian boy Zac Barnes - he went missing in 2016 when he was 18 years old. His friends claim he jumped out of the car and ran off into bush land next to the road. He’s never been seen since, zero activity on his cards and they’ve gridsearched / combed the whole area he apparently ran off into and there’s not even a hair of his there. There’s so much more to this case and it’s so suspicious. His mother has made a podcast going into way more detail about the events leading up to his disappearance. His case doesn’t have enough coverage and his family is trying to raise money for a coronial inquest but they haven’t raised nearly enough. There aren’t any super in depth videos covering all the details of his case and not much awareness of it. I would be so greatful if you would consider covering it. I think it’s hard to say that it’s suspicious that he never checked in with police. Because a lot of times people will say oh well someone checking up on the investigation is a person of interest because they’re trying to insert themselves into the investigation. But then if they don’t check in they become a person of interest it’s hard to say.

Y’all can all rally as the warriors against demonized addiction and all that, but come on...it’s definitely suspicious that her body was found so close to her ex’s home, and he claimed to “never know she was coming over” yet records show she had texted him about it prior? Suspicious all the way around, opiate addiction or not.

  • @eliottkelly6029

Heres the thing. He was an addict and alot of those behaviors can be explained away by that fact. I can tell you with %100 percent certainty that no active addict wants to deal with the police at all! The situation doesnt really matter you will avoid the police at all cost! Secondly about contacting the family. Why would he? It was his ex girlfriend ot would be way innaproproate to keep calling the parents to check up on things. Not to mention he was considered a main suspect. That would make it 100 times more inappropriate contacting her family and yall be hating on him for that. He played it EXACTLY how i would"ve handled this. Now with all that being said i he very well could of been a huge POS n killed this poor girl

Whenever there is a case that features a victim of color, people automatically assume that police negligence or carelessness is due to the victim's color. Negligence and carelessness when it comes to criminal investigations happens to people of every race. You can't just assume that race was a factor. In this case, the key reasons why there was negligence are directly related to the whole Yonkers/NYC jurisdiction stupidity plus the fact that Stevie was an adult. Those two things together lead to the botched investigation.

A lot of people that take methadone take Xanax also which will make them extremely reliable and I have seen on some cases where the individual will not remember anything from when they consumed a lot of Xanax. I spoke to a female who took methadone and Xanax about giving her a bicycle to get around town and the next day I brought her the bike and she didn’t remember the conversation. I took her this bike and she was like what’s this for and I was like ummmm...... lol

This is such a sad case, Stevie seemed like a great person with a bright future. I truly hate the whole “she probably ran away” narrative from police we see SO OFTEN. I’m from NY, I live in Manhattan, there is a LOT of police around. I have a hard time believing that they wouldn’t have the manpower or resources to gather the tapes and evidence “just in case” even if they believed she just ran away. So frustrating when the people who are supposed to solve the case end up making it harder for themselves.
It is so suspicious that her friends didn’t know where she was going or say anything? I don’t believe that a 19 year old girl didn’t tell her friends about going to meet an ex boyfriend. I think the ex knows more than he’s saying and that he was ruled out prematurely. Why wouldn’t he even care that she’s missing like Rachel said? Stevie deserved better from the police, her ex boyfriend, and her friends.
Also I hate to be this person, but for future reference, Bedford Stuyvesant is commonly just referred to as Bed Stuy (pronounced Sty - rhyming with Eye)
    Another great video as always!

She was going to get her stuff when she disappeared, then he lied to her Mom about it. It's the SO or ex 90% of the time. I hope justice is served for this poor girl and her family.

Stevie would have obviously gone on to do great things with her life, what an impressive, talented, determined young woman. I really hope the truth of what happened to her comes out somehow, I just worry that since it's already been such a long time and is only getting longer with every passing day that the window for her case to be solved is closing or has already closed :// of course we have no idea what the police know, maybe they have a ton of information and a suspect backed by evidence and are just days away from an arrest, but the police work was so poor in this case that I don't really think that's happening behind the scenes. as far as we know, the discovery of Stevie's body didn't really provide much in the way of solving what happened to her, and I have to imagine most, if not all, evidence is gone by now. ppl have gotten different phones and are no longer in possession of the phones they had at the time of Stevie's disappearance and murder so any records of texts or calls that could provide some insight are gone, ppl have probably moved, possibly even died, gotten rid of various items that could have been of use to the investigation, any blood/hair/fingerprints are certainly gone, etc etc. I really hope that someone who knows what happened, whether that's the perpetrator or someone else, is finally ready to get this off their chest and give Stevie's family some long needed closure. this case is a lesson for law enforcement in the importance of taking every missing person's report seriously, and investigating thoroughly, as quickly as possible. maybe if things had gone differently at the beginning in regards to the investigation, the person who killed Stevie would be sitting in prison rn. it's just so disappointing, this seems like it would have been such a solvable case if some good effort had been put in right at the start. I'm so sorry to her family, I can't imagine the frustration and anger knowing that your beloved daughter's murderer has gotten away with it thus far, and to Stevie, whose life had literally barely begun. all the music she'll never hear, the art and food she'll never make, the friends she'll never know. I hope her family get the answers they and Stevie deserve soon, and that they all find some measure of peace, whatever that looks like for them.

I have never heard of this case. And honestly it’s heartbreaking 💔. First the police really botched this investigation from the start. Had things been done correctly and in an appropriate time manner maybe they could have actually solved this one. I’m really on a toss up with the ex boyfriend, Brandon. I do think it’s kind of suspect that he knew she was coming but deleted the messages and pretended to not know and that he didn’t seem to care to check in on her case or offer much of any help. It doesn’t mean he’s guilty but it’s a little off. Then again if he’s someone who is actively using that could be why he distanced himself from the police and their investigation and addicts are known for being so enthralled in their addiction that they simply can’t focus on someone else. It is quite the coincidence that she happened to go missing on the same day she’s supposed to meet with him. Then again he also doesn’t have any violent criminal history. She obviously felt comfortable enough to meet him on her own and nobody ever said that they had a volatile relationship of any sort. He could possibly be innocent but maybe knows who did kill her and just doesn’t wanna get involved. Or with New York being such a huge city like many other cities she could have met up with foul play by accident, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. As unfortunate as that is, it does happen. However I do find it strange that she was wrapped in a blanket. Usually when someone is found in a blanket or covered in some way like that, it usually coincided with the killer having known the victim and even having cared for the victim and due to that familiarity with the victim and maybe even feeling remorse and guilt for what they had done they want to cover it up or give that person some dignity even in death. I would like to know have they done any kind of forensic testing on the blanket that her remains were found with? That could possibly lead to some clues. Also like you said what about this house? Was it already built back then and abandoned? Was it built and someone lived there? Was it still under construction during the time she was murdered? These are questions that don’t seem to have been answered. Such a sad case and I’m so sorry that Stevie’s disappearance didn’t seem to matter enough for the police to do their job and for anyone to really report on it. She seemed like such a bright and beautiful soul who had so much to offer the world and Lord only knows what she could have done with her life had it not been snatched away from her and even worse at such a young age. She didn’t even really get the chance to live. And my heart truly goes out to her family and loved ones because I can only imagine how devastating this is for them, to lose her in such a tragic way and not even have the answers I’m sure they desperately are in need of. I hope someday her killer is brought to justice and May Stevie always be remembered and RIP.

There's too many people in this comment section saying Brandon is innocent. He is not the victim here! My close friend has dated 3 opiate addicts and all 3 of them were violent and abusive to her. I know another woman who was an addict and so was her bf and he beat her. In my experience male addicts tend to be violent/abusive. Also the fact that Brandon said he didn't know she was coming over when there's a message to prove that's false.
Sure not all addicts are bad, abusive people but it sure seems like Brandon was most likely. Either that, or Stevie was also using and OD'd at Brandon's place and he didn't want to get in trouble for giving her drugs so he dumped her body instead.

I have a feeling she had more troubles then her family knew about. She did great till graduating high school either she had a mental condition which can happen after 18 or maybe she was into drugs. Just how she seemed like a drifter after high school and hung out with other addicts seems like she was trying to find a place she fit in. I jus feel she loved her family and hid somethings from them. She seemed like a smart beautiful girl who had a lot going for her. Hope they find out who did this to her.
