2018 Ford Mustang GT - Is it worth £45,000 ?!!

  • I first drove the Ford Mustang GT 18 months ago, and to be honest I wasn't very impressed ! Lots of power and noise but a poor automatic gearbox really let the car down. I was still a lot of car of £35,000 though.
The new face lift Mustang has more power and I get to drive the manual 6 speed. With a will specced Mustang now costing north of £45,000 it had better be good !
A big thank to Hendy Ford in Portsmouth for lending me their Mustang demonstrator for the day. Give them a call, this is a car that needs driving !

I rented a 2013 5.0 gt for 2500 mile vacation and easily averaged 22mpg around city and 26 mpg on the highway. If you are getting 11.5mpg you are “enjoying every moment”.

Great review, love the channel. I think I'm falling in love with these Mustangs, but I'll wait a year or two before getting one second hand. I find them charming. Beautiful on the outside, great sound, and for second hand money you can probably forgive the interior a little. By the way, at times you really remind me of Dave Gorman!

Brilliant video! Loved every minute of it. You are so enthusiastic and fun to watch. Great camera angles and shots. Very hard to find safe places to leave cameras for fly by shots, well done.
Mine showed as 2.5 mpg when I first got it. Takes a while to show the correct mpg until the car clocks some miles up. 2 and a half years on I now average 18mpg.
Liked and subbed and enjoyed 👍

Those are not "intakes" on the hood. Those are heat vents to help cool off the engine.

The 2018 Mustang 10 speed auto will out-gun the new manual as well as the old auto. And your comparison with other Euro brands is biased, you didn't mention the cost of a say V8 Mercedes compared with the cost of a Mustang? In Australia you can buy just about 2 Mustangs with the cost of one V8 Mercedes. Even the AMG hot hatch costs circa $10k more than the Mustang in this country. And then, there is the ongoing maintenance costs of a Euro car. You can throw the Mustang around twisty mountain roads at speeds which is more than double the recommended signposted speed without getting out of shape. How much faster you want to go on public streets?

Nice, honest review. I get the 'at this price, I'd want a bit more' comment but... you didn't stop smiling while you were driving it ALL the time!! I've owned two Mustangs - 2009 GT (raw, rough, unrefined) and a 2013 BOSS 302 (6 speed manual) and they always put a smile on my face. The Mercs, Beemers, Audis etc. are brilliant, but I think it's the rough edges on a Stang that means YOU have to drive them, not the computer, and boy are they fun to drive.

Somehow I don't think it would be an everyday day, and most would also have a Fiesta eco-boost.
Interesting, here in New Zealand the Eco-boost Mustang has No Resale. No one wants one. If you have a Mustang, it need a V8.

I live in Sydney and I'm lucky to own my 2nd car being a silver 17 GT - 6 speed. Bought the car for sub $60k and absolutely love the style, the raw V8 sound and the rough character this beast gives you. IMHO it's the best bang for buck car in the world atm. Mercs, BMW and Audi's are $100k plus but lack the soul of the Mustang. Life is to short you must enjoy the V8 whilst you can before governments across the globe ban/tax any petrol cars in the future.

    Hi Peter.
    Great review.
Regarding the long gearing/slow to rev element, there's a reason that doesn't get talked about much for the European import veraions of the Mustang. All European Mustang imports have the 3:55 final drive, whereas in the states the performance options of GT and Bullitt come with 3:93 (and can order 4:09). This transforms these V8s both in willingness to rev in gear, smashing you in the seat, and plain fun! Lowers the MPG even further though, hence only 3:55 in Europe. One of the best mods you can do to these Mustangs in UK for big performance and fun improvement though is swap the rear end ratio for the 3.93 (and have the ecu coded for the different axle, its a drop down option with the right plugin).

After six weeks of hospital confinement it’s good to be back to see what was up for review this week Peter. I have to say I like the looks, even the wet nappy colour suits it (for me). The sound from the small block V8 is glorious, although I would be interested in seeing how they’ve up the Bhp to 440, earlier models bragged about big numbers but were often no where near in real time. Interior looks a relatively nice place to be, quite refined again compared to previous models. It’s a big lump to go throwing around on typical U.K. B roads, especially with wet leaves carpeting/disguising the pitfalls of too much right foot, arse end deciding to break away & hang out, possibly requiring some fresh pairs of underpants being stashed away in the glove box for the occasional “oh shite” moments.
Sounds a lot of money needs to be invested to get it “right” with regards to the chassis/suspension components. Those consumption numbers are a bit on the low side, certainly worse than I have achieved from earlier versions on the 5 litre Ford V8’s.
Horses (pony’s) for courses I guess. I’ll stay with the European brands, that offer vehicles better suited to our needs. Now if I was driving the Pacific Coast Highway for my daily commute, I might be persuaded. Nice review mate & good to be home convalescing after six week trip to hell & back.
    Cheers
    Geof

Love the V8!! I finally got to drive one in May this year, soft top, in red with black leather. An utter joy to drive!! The auto box in the one I had was smooth as smooth can be and the noise!! I'll never forget it, that's for sure. Even at low speed it just burbled away. As James May once said, "it gave me the fizz!!" The US speck one have remote start and that was very welcome as it kicked in the A/C from 300 meters away, but the car stayed locked till it picked up on the key being next to the car and you opened it via the door handle. I have a short video on my channel showing the remote start feature doing a cold start..... Feel free to check it out. I'm seriously adding the manual GT to my future shopping list!!

What does the UK have against shoulders on the road? Where do you pull over if, for example, you run out of fuel?

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Рік тому +1

We have a trend towards ‘smart motorways’ that use the shoulder as a live lane in busy traffic. If the have to stop sensors detect this and close the lane to protect you. A terrible idea 😂

I have the 2017 stang GT. Your feedback is spot on.
For me it’s the about the V8 experience and heritage. However, I do regret not getting a B road Roadster/Hot hatch. There’s little confidence in the Stang on those corners and yes you can tune to “smooth the edges”, but it’s already cost a few happy marriage months 😉.

I'm sorry but i have to say you are not fully correct with one or two of your statements.. the interior is not a million miles away from the "old" car, in fact most of it is the same. The steering wheel is different in that they swapped all the audio/phone controls left to right?? Why??
My '17 has the Sync 3 and I can't see any difference to the unit fitted to that car? The engine now has DI, plated bores a dual mass flywheel and the gearbox has aluminium shift forks. There are TSB's in the States for at least two of these items failing My '17 has no DI, iron liners, a solid flywheel and steel shift forks. Is the '18 better?? uhh no!! I just wish we had the Recaro option in 2017.
I think the one big let down for this and all Mustangs is the poor dealer network. Go look at the UK forums to see what I mean.

Not overly impressed with your review! I ordered my 5.0 GT (manual) in 2018 with the premium package, it was the last of the pre face lift (2017) and came in at £38k, I love the car it’s an everyday car and I’m getting around 20mpg mostly round town 24+ on a long motorway run ,and I’m not driving miss daisy if you get my drift! If I wanted the extra luxury you talk about I would buy a merc or BMW but then for the same engine size I would be paying another £30-£40 grand on top of the £38! Yes I agree with you on the face lift price, Ford have shot themselves in the foot. The one thing I didn’t expect was the attention the car gets! Pull up at the lights next to a BMW M4 etc. and it’s the Mustang that get the attention! All in all it’s a great car and I have never looked back buying it , a couple of things you didn’t mention, on a brand new Mustang the first years road tax was £1000 and £150 a year there after but any vehicle over £40k attracts a £350 road tax premium on top of the £150 a year ! Hence I made sure the salesman got it under the £40k mark .

Thank you for your very interesting take on the Mustang. I’m fortunate to own one here in the States: a 2018 Mustang GT premium, with magna-ride and active exhaust. Another commenter thought those sold in the UK were detuned versions. Don’t know why that would be, but I can add that mine is rated at 460 horses , not 430! So there may be something to that claim. Also, I average 20.2 mpg......but that’s probably because I drive conservatively. Like most 67 year olds, I suppose. 😎 Just saying. Thanks again.

They're not detuned - it's the right hand drive conversion that lowers the horsepower for the UK. They have to put a nasty kink in the exhaust manifold to make the steering column fit.

I have the 2017 and I get around 9-litres/100-km on the highway (30-mile/UK gallon). In town, just over 12-Litres/100-km... Perhaps you should be called "Lead" Ped...? Lets face it, you smiled through the whole review and the Mustang is a lot cheaper than a Mercedes or BMW, that are over priced and over rated in Canada/US.

I have been really considering a Mustang GT and especially the Bullitt as I've always loved them, however I've been unsure about it in terms of fuel economy and build quality etc. I don't know how I would cope after being used to the build quality and interior etc of my Mercedes CLS.
Your honest review has gave me more information to think about and I value your opinion. I agree with the price issue compared to other cars that I could get for that money. I just love a big V8. Cheers mate.

Petrol Ped, I never saw you actually get serious with the throttle, as I'm sure you were changing up by ear. The manual NEEDS a 3.73 rear end ratio in the UK, otherwise the gearing is too tall. This bad boy revs to 7,500 and just keeps making power till at LEAST 7,000. In no way is it a slow revving engine !!

Add some suspension/chassi parts for 1500gbp and it is a real joy. Here in Sweden an m3/m4/c63 are some 30k+GBP more compared to a Mustang with the 10r80 and the Magneride.

I have the pre face lift model in 6 speed manual from new and in 5 years apart from annual service I’ve just this month replaced the battery and that’s the only issue I’ve had in 5 years, and I don’t drive it like miss daisy! and speaking as a professional driver this is one of the best cars I’ve had for the thrill of driving, if you want the “panache” as in a Merc or BMW you would pay over 40k on top of the 40k you pay from the Mustang !! And driving it very hard I’m getting 18 - 20 round town as a daily drive and 26-27 on a long motorway journey. A fantastic car with a fantastic pedigree, worth every penny.

Nice review as ever, I can not decide if I like the car , it sounds good, looks good but it’s just the characteristics of the engine I am not sure about. A lazy engine is great for wide roads and cruising but B roads not sure. I know you said not the eco boost engine but I am wondering if that would be better for the type of roads you were on, it would rev more freely and might be a bit more fun although without the v8 rumble. After our little adventure in the i30n at that weekend that sounds great and is great to rev out the engine and having to work the gearbox so a bit of an opposite view. Having not driven either cars I would actually go for the eco boost, get the adaptive suspension and see if there is an aftermarket tune. Cheaper, looks as good, better mpg (my review without having even seen, sat in or driven the car 😂)

A Barton Hybrid 3 short throw shifter with its trans mounted brace fixes a lot of issues.

I don't know if it's offered where you are, but the one to get is the Performance Pack 2 Mustang GT 5.0. The package includes magneride, 6-piston big front brakes, larger radiator, spoiler, GT350-sized wheels and tires, vacuum and oil gauages (GT350), and track springs and stabilizers, and is about 2% faster on most tracks compared to a regular GT like the one you are driving. In the USA the package is $6500 atop a GT Premium but it makes the car drive like a Shelby GT350. USA Price = $49,000 and it's better than a Bullitt on a track.
I looked long and hard at this car, then I got a Tesla Performance Model 3 which can roast this car in everything below 100 mph - safer - with much better stereo & mileage ...

The best Mustang is the Shelby GT350R which is a different animal altogether. Flat plane 5.2L V8 with 526hp. Revs to 8,500 RPM and handles very well with a high RPM wail that is ear piercing. Pricing starts around $58 grand in the U.S., and is actually a bargain for what comes with that.

Interesting to see the pricing in the UK is on par or somewhat higher than what we are paying in Australia for the same right hand drive car - both seem to be a huge premium over the US prices. And seems the UK version is similar to Aus in that the only V8 model is the GT "Premium", "Sport Pack" - which means as standard you get Digital dash, Brembo brakes, heated./cooled seats, multi-mode exhaust etc - all of which are options in the US.
Your comparison with the earlier model is ok, but to be fair you should have gone another auto (10sp) to do a truer comparison. The 6 speed is the same as it was in the 17 so your old one would have probably felt much the same as the 18 had it of been a manual.

For 2018, the clutch has been changed to the twin disk type and the gear ratios are a bit different. I know that 4th gear is 1:1, with 5 and 6 being overdrive gears. The injection system on the 5.0 has also been changed to a dual port and direct injection setup. In the US, the GT can be had in base trim with cloth seats, steam gauges, standard exhaust , 4 piston brakes, and 18" wheels. The right hand drive models are rated at a bit less HP due to the way in which the exhaust must be routed. The US spec model is rated at 460 HP for 2018. A US spec base model GT runs ~$35K sticker, and even less with dealer discounting and promotions often bringing the price to under $30K. For the money, the base model is a real performance bargain. I love mine :)

Many testers are preferring the 10-spd auto - and there are reliability issues with the manual, with the shifter forks now made from aluminium instead of steel - they are starting to break quite often. Try the auto - it's much better than the old auto box. As for driving/handling "panache", the Magnetic suspension option is a must-have - a game changer. Delete the Recaros, not worth the money over the standard seats, and no heating/cooling.

I'm not sure what you're on about. I have a 2018 manual with magneride and easily get 32 mpg if I use the ACC or nurse the go pedal on longer runs.
The car comes alive over 4000 rpm and is simply unrivalled on UK roads at its price point.

Not sure about your last point. Unrivalled on UK roads at that price point ? An Audi S4 or S5 to name but one German competitor ;-)

I would love to see you do another review with the ECO Boost 2.3. The balance and feel are really better and the 310 HP is not really a letdown with the 200+ LB lighter nose.

      I really should :-)

That doesn't matter much when the car still weighs over 1600kg. I did an hour long test drive with an Ecoboost Mustang a few years ago and it does not make you feel you are in a vehicle that has over 300 horsepower, unless you downshift all the time

      If you're buying a Mustang, it should be a V8. Can't afford one? Get a second hand/older model V8.
