  • The Ford Mustang. The very name conjures up heritage, history and raw emotion. Since its birth in the mid 60s, it has offered up muscular looks, V8 power, and performance that is in reach of the working man. Despite its lengthy time in production, us Brits didn’t get the chance to buy a Mustang until 2015, a mere 50 years after it hit the motoring scene. Before then, if you wanted one, you would have had to import it - but not anymore.
    The sixth generation is the first model we've been able to buy in the UK, and it's recently been given a facelift. Therefore, I thought I'd get behind the wheel to see what's what. I know, it's a tough job, but someone's got to do it...
    The model tested here is of course the GT version, meaning it has the desirable 5.0 litre V8 engine, which has recently been tweaked to give even more power. 450hp is fed to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox, although a 10-speed auto is available as well.

    I have a manual 2018 Mustang GT convertible equipped with PP, 401A package and MagneRide in Canada. The regular seats are quite confortable and grippy, and they are heated and cooled, contrary to the Recaro seats. The North American Performance Pack version comes with two extra central gages for the oil pressure and the vacuum and it has a more premium dash trim. It also comes with a strut tower bar and K-Member Braces. Regarding the central console, I see that they kept the left hand drive set up for the UK, that is why your bottles obstruct your access to the shifter.

    And if the United States had the same sort of taxes on emissions as the U.K. and the rest of Europe, do you think there would be as many gas guzzling trucks, SUVs, and V8 muscle cars like the Mustang on the road? I think we'd have much more sensible vehicles, such as having the return of the two best cars available in my opinion, the Fiesta and the Focus hatchbacks. What's your take on that? I believe there is a gas guzzler tax on the Mustang when you buy it, like there is a luxury tax to pay for luxury level expensive cars here, but I don't think is applied to trucks. And once you buy a truck or a Mustang, gas is about 1/2 or even less of the price of petrol in the UK/Europe.

    This is a great review, Aaron, and I love the colour but...Ford have brought out a racing green "Bullitt" edition. If that means nothing to you, Bullitt was a film featuring a very famous car chase in San Francisco and driven (in real life, not a stunt driver) by the actor Steve McQueen. It might be a bit dated, but do seek it out if you have not seen it, it's a great film. You mentioned that the car is very masculine. Steve McQueen was an actor, hellraiser and used to race cars and motorbikes for fun. An absolute legend that most actors today simply couldn't hold a candle to. That's not nostalgia, that's facts!

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  5 років тому +1

      I know all about Bullitt, and in the special edition, which looks really cool. I'm about to say something that I think will upset you...I think the film is massively overrated, and would be nothing without the car chase. It's far too pedestrian if you ask me - there, I said it 😂Thanks for watching Steve!

      I'm ashamed to admit, I've never seen it. There are many classics I've never seen. When I grew up, I spent most of my time gaming, or playing football. I've never been a big film buff. 🙈

    Bit of useless information, In January 1981 my Dad bought a Brand new RHD Ford Mustang Mk3 2.3 Turbo Ghia . From my understanding as I was only 10 at the time and trying to find out more since the car was officially supplied via UK Ford dealers, for example I remember seeing the brochure, they was imported and converted to RHD by an unknown company under licence or w.h.y from Ford, full manufactures warranty etc which it needed as it was a complete lemon!, it was in the local Ford dealer more than it was out, the build quality was shocking and it broke down....a lot!. It got returned to ford and swapped in for a beige Granada with a brown vinal roof!!. Anyway I would love the new Mustang but It is just too much money unfortunately when you price it up against certain German cars, but great review :-)

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  5 років тому +2

      Hello Adam, thanks for watching. Out of interest, what German cars would you put it up against? My first though would be a BMW M4, but that's over £60,000, so the Mustang looks like a bargain in comparison.

    • @bishy33
      @bishy33 5 років тому +1

      @@CarObsession Personally for me the M4 is too expensive these days especially in CS guise and too big IMO, having owned an e46 M3 coupe I would go for the M2 competition which is pretty much e46 M3 sized, as quick as a car that most people will need and very near the price of the Mustang that you reviewed with options I expect?. Other cars that I like around the 40-50k mark are the Audi RS3 saloon, A base Porsche 718 boxster or Cayman if VERY light on the options for that money, save money the Golf R?. Or a left field and not German option an Alpine A110 in the legend or pure spec. However all that said, the Mustang is in a class of it's own really, it's big loud and will definitely get you noticed. Thanks for the reply.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  5 років тому

      M2 Competition is not a bad shout, although it's still more money, even when compared to the model tested here, which has a fair few options. Also, the M2 is a smaller car, soI still feel the M4 would serve as a better comparison, but I can understand your logic. Cayman is also not a bad shout, and although it's often used a rival for the Mustang, they are a bit chalk and cheese if you ask me. I've never driven a Cayman, but I know that's it's known for being a fine handling driver's car, which the Mustang cannot match. The Mustang can handle well, but I reckon the Cayman would beat it comfortably it on a track. Drag race, however...
      You could also consider the Lexus RC F, but is around £60,000, so it's still more money than the Mustang, and in all honesty, I think I'd rather have the Mustang, even if you take price out of the equation. RS3 Saloon is a different proposition to the Mustang, so I would really class that as a rival, but it would be better pick if you want a more premium car (and all wheel drive, of course). Alpine is a car I would love to drive, but I've not had the chance to yet. It's similar to the Cayman, in the fact that it's more about handling than brute force, plus I'd be worried about the reliability prospects.
      You've got the Chevy Camaro of course, but the number of dealerships in the UK is VERY limited, whereas Ford dealerships are pretty much ten-a-penny.

    • @bishy33
      @bishy33 5 років тому +2

      @@CarObsession It is a tough one really as the Mustang really is in a class of it's own if you want a RHD 5.0 V8 american muscle car, it is a lot of money however and at the risk of sounding like a brand snob it is well a Ford! but then it is a different kind of Ford, if only it was a cheap as it is in the states where the base 2.3 model is literally Ford focus money but hey.The other options I mentioned are just what I would consider for the money not necessarily a coupe for example, the one tested has to be near 50K?. Personally I would be looking at a car with better build quality and all round performance/economy which I know is missing the point. But at the end of the day you want the Mustang you buy the Mustang , just as a little curve ball if someone handed me 50k I would probably buy a new 2.0 MX5 and a hot hatch :-)

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  5 років тому +1

      The model I tested was just under £48,000 I believe, if I recall correctly. And yes, I would go for the MX-5 and hot hatch option as well! You're a man after my own heart!

    If Ford would redesign the rear seat room to actually fit normal size humans, this would be a nice car. But it's just so impractical in that sense. Why bother making two more seats in the rear if nobody but little kids can fit in them? I remember there is an article on Car and Driver magazine website where they put up a vintage review from 1964 or 1965 of the original Mustang. I think it says or shows there is enough room for a family to fit in the car, so I think the back seat space was better on the original. And I remember in the film The Outsiders, the Soc's are riding in an original Mustang and there are adult-size actors riding in the back seats. Hmmmmm....what was Ford thinking when they made this such an impractical car?

    • @nick000002
      @nick000002 Рік тому

      I found the rear seat is perfect for holding a bottle of Champagne from Waitrose in place while you take it home, hows that for practicality !!😊
