- In light of recent events with Uta's Character... it begs the question. Who is Uta? Like most characters of Tokyo Ghoul, Uta is a character shrouded in mystery. We know very little about him & what makes him tick. Still with the few details we know about Uta, we can piece together his motives. Apparently Ishida Sui even admitted he has similar hobbies as Uta. Tokyo Ghoul:re Chapter 116 gave us some insight to Uta's character and how he's lonely. Uta might seem like he just wants chaos but he just wants to bring out the true you. He doesn't want people to hide behind masks or false image. Its kind of ironic & symbolic when you think about it. Uta seems to despise his own image or body. Only time will tell if the Uta we know has a hidden face or a different name. Ready for TG:re Chapter 117 Review?

Hey Chibi! Interesting thoughts on Uta!
What I want to add is the symbolism of Uta's neck tattoo, which can be interpreted about the relation of Ghouls and Humans (the meaning of the sentence in relation to the whole series, not just Uta's character).
I (Ghoul) can live neither with you (Human), nor without you. -> because as we saw with Nishiki, sooner or later a hungry ghoul would also attack a loved one but as we know, Ghouls need human flesh to survive, so I like that interpretion of his tattoo as well as your interpretion about the personal meaning related to Uta's character :)

The part that you talk about Uta's masks, It's reminds me to Uta's birthday illustration from Ishida in 2014. He drew Uta wearing a Kitsune mask on the side of his head. Kitsune is the mythical fox in Japanese folklore, They have a magical skills and shape-shifting ability to trick others, so it might make sense to Uta that we saw he can manipulate his face. and also he has some part of his tattoo that looks like a fox as well. So many symbols

on a side note, why does the logo of "Tokyo ghoul:Re" have a resemblance to uta's peircings (the 2 peircings around his left eye). We know that the title means "One eyed King" as re means king and the colon (:) one of the dots are colored red.
Does this mean that uta is a potential one eye? considering that he said that his right eye was a tatoo? (if he was telling the truth).
It would, kinda, explain why uta is strong - especially at a young age.

that moment where as a little kid (baby) i would get so "giggly" when my parents say "no face".
19 years later ..... I hear "no-face" and I instantly reference uta. oh boy how things change yet remain the same.
In the final chapter of part one Uta is shown on page 16 holding what looks like his no face mask and a large pile of masks in the background of him. maybe possible hinting at all the roles he's played before he met kaneki and the series started.

i actually wonder what uta is up to, i mean we saw him with the anteiku members as well, and now being with the clowns does that mean that sooner or later they will have to fight each other? since goat's goal is piece and clowns are causing trouble i can see that happening. How will uta react to that? Also uta fighting kaneki and transforming into hide would be pretty fucked

I thought it was obvious what his tattoo meant, even without it being explained. I didn't go back to the chapter where he tells Kaneki about the meaning, but I thought I remember him specifically saying that it showed the relationship between ghouls and humans. "I can live neither with you, (because humans hate ghouls) nor without you (because ghouls have to eat humans to survive)." I thought it was a good quote; probably the best quote to summarize humans and ghouls, but now I don't know if I'm right or not. Think about the context of the scene, Kaneki was (obviously) going through a hard time because he had recently become a ghoul, and Uta revealing the tattoo to him was like a comfort mechanism to make Kaneki understand what his new position on earth was as a ghoul. I didn't get any hints about Uta's insecurity or personality, just humans and ghouls. xd
I think it's more like the mask is him bring out his true self like how he tattooed he's eye so he can't hide that he's a ghoul cuz that's who he really is and I think he also just wants to be who he wants to be that's y he can change into who he wants

Kind of going off a limb here, but what if Uta's neck tattoo is supposed to be symbolic of his death? People in the past have been known to be executed with a guillotine to the neck, so maybe Ishida is forshadowing Uta's death with the tattoo..

Saw a theory on reddit about hide saying uta could have used a clone with hides face to see how it would change kaneki at the end of part one (just like how he wanted to see how mutsuki changed when she/he saw haise face).
maybe that's why his kakugan is always activated. Creating a new face recquires rc cell manipulation via kakugan. Problem solved.

I wonder if he is manipulating or helping Yomo too, does he even care about him? Thats what makes his character so frustrating and interesting to decipher, he didn't even seem too shocked by what Mutsuki did...
After remembering the flashback, Yomo feels a bit like Hijikata
The fact that he has so many intricate tattoos would indicate that he is WAAAAAAAAAAAY more important than we know. Think about it; the manga artist has to draw ALL of those tattoo almost EVERY time Uta is in a frame. Who would go through all that trouble for a side character?
I don't know why but maybe IXA (Arima' s quinqe) could be related to Uta, it may explain why the name of the ghoul is unknown

And now looking at it, I see the difference. In fact it was Yomo who dons the plague mask. So maybe Uta was just reflecting Yomo at the moment, showing who Yomo is, the true Yomo he has discovered from the years. As for why it has those holes and why it looks so twisted, there has to be a reason for it since Uta's an artist and makes every mask with care.
I'm pretty sure Uta is a half ghoul, I think this because Ishida tends to hide one of his eyes a lot(remember the tattoo scene) also he looks a lot like the ghoul who killed kurona's parents who happened to be experimenting with the ccg to create half ghouls, it just seems like a possibility. Plus in the latest chapter Uta calls himself an outcast or a black sheep meaning he's different than everybody else. I wonder where his character is gonna go.
How long do you think that Tokyo Ghoul:re will go on for? Another year or so or do you think it's slowly coming to a closure?

that is true my theory was kind of a joke and a lil farfetched, but Uta got several knives to the face from suzuya on stage. So either Uta has amazing recovery or one was a kagune clone.

Now I'm starting to thing that Utas default face isn't his actual face. I mean he always has his kakugan activated and we know when a ghouls kakugan is activated they use their kagune. So hes always probably using his kagune mask. Urg this makes me even more confused with the character and the series as whole.

Foxes are shapeshifters in Japanese (and some other) mythogy, they can take on the shape of any person or object they desire, but they need a leaf or acorn or evel a pebble to shapeshift, I think Ishida hinted in that direction (the piercings for changing his face), rather than Uta being immortal or THAT old (would sound like some Naruto shit and that doesn't really have a place in TG).
