How to trim pampas grass with duct tape. I use duct tape to go around the base of the pampas grass. This helps with cleanup because the big bundle stays together and you don't have grass blowing all over the neighborhood. Most people in my area cut pampas grass really short once a year. It is a good idea to split pampas grass every few years. The base of pampas grass with continue to expand and sometimes it will start to rot out.

I used your duct tape technique. It worked great. I tried something a little different after I cut the first plant. I used a ratcheting nylon tie down strap. I taped the hooks together to form a single long strap and cinched it down around the pampas grass. After cutting the plant down I wrapped it with duct tape and release the nylon strap. I got two really good sized clumps of pampas grass in my trash cart easily. Life time Kansan here also. Living in South West Wichita near Haysville.

good tips- that always die back here in North Texas depending upon how cold of a winter we have. Mine are still somewhat green and are low to date was only 22* for one night.

Duct tape that's cool lol. I save the twine when I do pine needles and use those to tie off the grass. Same principal here!

Rather than the trash can and back for the little clippings we use a stihl blower/shredder vac.We rake it into a pile and then suck it up with the vac and dump it in the front of our trailer. Works for trimming bushes that are more leafy with just thin twigs holding the leaves. Great video keep up the work.

Good stuff bud, I have a trim coming up with some bushes and ornamental grass but they only want me to clean up the grass a bit instead of shorten it.
Around here most people trim their pampas once a year and we just cut it down real short and it comes back every year.

Why is it necessary to haystack cut Ornamental Grasses in mild climates such as Florida anyway??? If you say it helps it grow better, then I'll ask "In what way specifically and how do support that"?
Dam... Another way to use Duct tape!!!! Agree bundle up especially if there are some green still to the plant.
I never knew about tying them up, I always just cut them down then cleaned up the big mess after. The next one I do I'm going to have to try and use your method.

What's the reasoning behind cutting pampas grass back yearly? I've never known that to be done in my area, but it's entirely possible that it should be done and I just don't know why.
+Caren Green I don't know if there is a particular reason but around here that's just when it's usually done. I like doing it early before the mowing season gets rolling.
I just bought my house in January. We have had a very mild winter here in New Hampshire. I have 9 Pampas ornamental grasses in my landscaping. I was told to cut them down to about 6 inches, so I did. I haven't ruined them, have I?
No you haven't. For some reason, some of these guys leave them tall like that. Common rule of thumb is 6" as you've heard and many (if not most sources) say to do it in the spring. I followed that advice for many years. However, I have experimented on several clumps over the last 4 years and proven I can cut them flush and they're fine. Also, you can taken them down in a late fall cleanup. They'll come back fine AND you don't have the issue with dried foliage blowing all over in late winter /spring. While at it, as the clump ages on ornamental grass, the centers will start dying out. You dont have to dig and divide. Take a reciprocating saw with a 12" demolition blade. Plunge in and cut around that dead center. Pop that dead chunk out and fill with topsoil. The grass will grow back into it.

+Gary Palys Yes, you can just cut out the dead part. I forget what show I was watching 6 years or so ago and the old guy showed how he used a reciprocating saw. That thing has become my 2nd favorite tool. If you dont have one, you should. As I stated, use 12 inch demolition blades in the ground. It'll saw through that tough woody root ball. If it's a big clump, I'll half or quarter the dead section to pop them out. That saw is also excellent when transplanting. Run it around the plant and pop it out of the hole. Day lilies .... I pop that big clump out and then saw it into as many divisions as I need. I even use it to remove large shrubs and small trees and is my go to for all my tree pruning. I even take trees down with it. This spring I took down a 22 year old spruce and last summer, fell and chopped up two 25' pear trees. (Squirrels pissed me off)

TopNotchLawns I just made one in the backyard save sticks that I pick up on my yards then I sit back and have a fire on the weekend and get paid to burn the sticks beats paying to have to dispose of them

Well blake, I don't own a set of trimmers yet. I haven't gotten into much trimming yet. I borrowed these from my buddy! These were an echo. I'm probably going to buy a stihl. The company I used to work for had stihl trimmers and we never had any problems. On this job here I charged $10 per bush and a disposal fee because my normal dump doesn't want pampas. I have to take these to a transfer station.

Yea, it ran great. They were a little dull. When I returned them to him I told him they prob need sharpened and he laughed and said I know. He said he has used them a lot. They started right up and ran great.
