    Seems so simple but I dread this time of year because the grass removal is such a pain. These tips are gold! Thank you!

    I never thought about the use of a broom, thanks. One thing I do use, is a tarp to catch the side I’m cutting.

      I like the tarp idea. Would save me some raking! It’s almost that time of year.

      No problem. And I agree with you. If I had 13 of them I would be using an electric trimmer as well!

    Thank you so much for this tip! We're in Hawaii big island and cane grass/ elephant grass is HUGE and invasive. Our yard is an acre and is a jungle and the prices to cut these down are insanely high. I'm going to try a huge machete and tie them off first. MAHALO!! The fibers CAN and will cut you - agreed. Mahalo!

    • @fixitFlip
      @fixitFlip  3 роки тому

      Mahalo! Long sleeves would be advised then for sure! A machete sounds like it would make this job more fun ha ha! Good luck with it!

    Exactly what I needed I have this grass by my house and it's out of control. I feel like I'm in jurassic park

      Ha ha, yeah they can get out of control for sure. I'm getting close to dividing mine in half because they are so huge.

    Is next year’s growth affected by how far down you cut back?

    • @fixitFlip
      @fixitFlip  Рік тому +1

      Yes, if you leave the old brown foliage, the new blades will have a harder time growing through, and it won't look as thick. Warm season grass like these can be taken down to just a few inches each spring. (or fall)

    What time of year do you do it?

    • @fixitFlip
      @fixitFlip  10 місяців тому +1

      Late fall to any time through the Winter. As long as it's done before new green sprouts come up. I've even done it in the spring after some new growth had just started.

    how to up root them

    • @fixitFlip
      @fixitFlip  3 місяці тому

      Wait until after a rain when the ground is good and soft, and start digging with a shovel. Be prepared to lift a really heavy root system out of the ground.

    When can you do this ounce there brown?

    • @fixitFlip
      @fixitFlip  Рік тому

      You do not have to wait until they are brown, but it makes them a little less prickly to deal with. But I would still wear long sleeves. You can cut them down any time in the fall.

    Is it safe to burn? Not poisonous?

    • @fixitFlip
      @fixitFlip  Рік тому

      Yes, but not if you are close to a house or deck like mine!! Lol. A lot of golf courses will burn them.

    why cut them?

    • @fixitFlip
      @fixitFlip  4 роки тому

      Old foliage (last year's growth) needs to be cut off each winter or early spring. Really any time after they are turned brown, just before new green growth comes up. The old growth will inhibit the new growth. Trimming it back each year helps it grow in fuller each spring.

      Doesn't take me too long. I don't mind the exercise. If I had a ton of plants I would definitely get some.
