Hey Doc, just a quick tip...when I trim my bushes, I will take an old painters drop cloth, or old beach towels and lay them around the base of the shrubs. For me, it makes cleanup much easier. Love your videos, keep up the good work.
My dad would've really enjoyed you. He is gone now of course since I'm 70. But he had a good sense of humor and he knew what the hell he was doing. It was a nice combination in a person.
Very helpful. I am a new widow and am just learning gardening. I took care of the inside of the house and my husband took care of the yard. This has been very in-lighting. Thank you
The best video about trimming bushes I have ever seen! Very encouraging under the "just do your best" rule. I feel more comfortable to go out and work in mine. Thank you so much!
Thank God I found your bush trimming video! You helped us learn about our Bermuda grass, yours was the best video I found then. And yours is the best bush trimming one too. I clicked on a dozen videos both times before I found one as clear, audial, professional, and concise as yours are.
I'm a new gardener with some training and hands on as I go the last 3 years. I did a ball cut on a shrub. I've learned now from doc the boots cut. Thanks for that. I can relate your approach and since I don't do formal gardening and have a laid back make it look tidy but not perfect, I'm loving your approach.
Thank goodness. Someone with a sense of humor with these big bushes. This will be fun. Thank you sir bro it's Gail in Central Florida at September 23, 2020. So you know what kind of hell we are all going through. This will help.
Great tips! There are techniques for trimming that are usually learned by trial and error. I'll be trimming my hedges for the first time. Your tips will help me achieve better first results.
I do a cube shape first, then round-off the corners of the cube to make a sphere. By doing that I take care of the bulky and overgrown branches that get in my way in visualizing the final sphere and I establish a base-level size & shape before the final look. I just developed this technique on my own from years of cutting bushes/shrubs, but it works for me because it simplifies things. Also, like he said in the video, let the cutting blades do the work and don't force the blades into the bush when cutting. You want to slow-down when it comes to the final details and exact shape of whatever bush/shrub you're cutting to get the perfect look.
Very informational and since I’m new to home ownership and living in a home. This was really easy to understand and I feel confident that I can go out and trim my own bushes and hedges now. Thank you Doc.
I have the exact same trimmer as you do. Since I’m a woman I don’t have the muscle to do all those bushes in one day. It would be a killer on my arms and back for sure!! I may try these tips on my bushes one day at a time. You make it look so easy ;)
Great tips. Been doing the same for the past 15 years on bushes at the front of my house. Pretty much learned the technique myself. Same as yours. Now, my next project is creating animals! lol!
Hey Devil Dog thanks for the tips. Me and my wife enjoyed you video. We are stuck here in Phoenix,AZ where there aren't many brushes and hardly any grass. We can't wait to get back to Florida.
Hi C. Lewis... thank you for explaining so clearly during this interesting video.🏆I am in Topiary and my small front garden is amazing with the designs and it is treat to see the finished shapes. Thank you. Jose from Melbourne , Australia
Doc, you say you have to envision the shape you want and go for it. I’m not a pro but I absolutely agree. I think of it as icing a cake. You have your hard base layer (agressive cut) and then you put the gravy layer of icing on at the end (light cut) for finish appearance. That big ole hedge trimmer is like a spatula😃 great tutorial. I’m gonna try that booty cut though. Never tried it but will today
Very nice! I do it the same way on my round "pom-pom" bushes. You have to keep using a smooth flowing motion that is rounded and not herky jerky little cuts. My neighbors never do theirs well.
Hey great video was wondering what your thoughts on about mulch and termites does mulch attract them? I was always afraid to put mulch too close to the house . a lot of different opinions on this . thanks in advance for your input.
When you hedge them bushes in ball shape. How do you get all the leaves out of the flower beds for it to still look good? Thanks for all the awesome videos on how to become a hedger.
I lay down a tarp, then cut, then drag out the tarp, fold it and shake it out into my trash 🗑...kinda easier than picking up thousands of sticks/leaves Looks great though! Wanna come do mine? Lol
I use two big pieces of cardboard. I have a notch cut in the side of each to fit around the trunk. When I put them down they overlap a bit. Raking up is easy on the smooth surface of the cardboard. I use my leaf blower to blow the clippings out of the shrub before cleaning up.
just got done doin a customers 7 bushes in her back yard they turned out awesome. and also just cut down some 8 ft tall decorative grass at the parents house and the gas hedge trimmer did awesome 👍
I like the Booty Cut. I am SO glad this girl does LOW maintenance and has bushes only where the points of brick on the house is - 8. Just got through shortening my flowerbeds and put in perennials. Maintenance is once a year.
I was trimming shrubs and a guy in an oil truck stops and says they look good and do I do haircuts. I said sure and every haircut comes with a free hat.
"The wife wants round bushes" No wonder they live longer than we do-and then some other guy get's all our cool lawn care stuff and you know they won't appreciate it or know what to do with any of it! Nice job there, Doc-very handy tips.
I enjoy trimming them. It's like giving the garden a haircut. Looked outy window half done the little runway but still got a giant low crawling one. I thought leaving it naturalish but off the middle grass that goes up the middle of my well grown secret garden. Left as a legacy I don't want to damage it. I want to make it lovely so I'm learning from scratch and trial and error. I've only got rubbish big scissors but it still worked.
That's how I normally trim my bushes. I have a couple with missing chunks. How do you fix that? Summer heat kills a section or something. I know to prune the dead out or it'll follow into the bush. I'm guessing with the dead out of the way, it'll slowly close up. Or should I do an aggressive cut during the cold seasons?
Nice video. Our Lilly Pillys were taller then the house. So 3 months ago I chainsaw them to shoulder height. They are growing back great now. Using a utility knife to cut any sprouts on the trunk. So now i am watching your video again, went to my local hardware store to buy a petrol hedger like yours. My only problem our are close to the picket spike fence, are the Bosh petrol mini hedgers any good. They cost more but are smaller. Any idea thanks
I loved how you did those little round bushes. You make it look so easy. Great tips thank you for your video. Now, can you come to Marion Illinois and do mine? 😁
Thanks for video. Will have some hedge balls to do so needed this. But I must ask what is that hated bush? And if you hate so much why not remove & stump grind it?
It's ironic that I just came home from a corporate building that we landscape designed years ago, and there are over 20 big boxwood same size as yours that I power trim the exact same way. There's also a lot of boxwood hedges, perhaps 120 linear feet of Green Mountain boxwood that I hedge. My problem is that the flat top boxwoods always brown out, and I don't know how to prevent this. Some say don't trim in the heat, others say only use sharp trimmers. Bull...its' more than that. I noticed that f the individual leaves get cut then it will brown out. Two days later the entire top is brown and looks terrible. I say, just wait, it will recover. In the meantime what can I do to prevent this??? Something I'm doing wrong?
Thanks for this. I hate trimming the hedges. I have a couple of arborvitae that have to be trimmed regularly. Will it gum up the blades if I use a powered hedge trimmer on these? If so, how do you clean them? Also do the blades on these ever have to be sharpened?
Wow...a big tree. They did a great job cutting it down. Verizon had to cut the vines from the tree in the back of my house thats was wrapped around the pole and the wires. I wish the neighbors have this tree cut down.

Jeff Button great idea
The finishing with the mulch looks absolutely amazing! im a 23 year old new home owner and I never new how fun it is to do yard work
My dad would've really enjoyed you. He is gone now of course since I'm 70. But he had a good sense of humor and he knew what the hell he was doing. It was a nice combination in a person.
Thank you. I work for a landscaper who isn’t great with words when teaching, this is a great help to me.
Very helpful. I am a new widow and am just learning gardening. I took care of the inside of the house and my husband took care of the yard. This has been very in-lighting. Thank you
Judi Burcham sorry to hear that - hope it turned out okay!

One good tip ! Never drink when you trim bushes ! I’ve learned my lesson, have a drink after wards , great video
I'm gonna be helping a friend trim hedges . Didn't want to do it without having an idea of how it's done. Video is very helpful thankyou !
Great tips! There are techniques for trimming that are usually learned by trial and error. I'll be trimming my hedges for the first time. Your tips will help me achieve better first results.
Watching you trim those bushes is so satisfying 😃.

Very informational and since I’m new to home ownership and living in a home. This was really easy to understand and I feel confident that I can go out and trim my own bushes and hedges now. Thank you Doc.

My apologies Doc. I included another name..Lewis instead of yours... my mistake .😫🏆💥
Great job! They look really good. I just did 20 of these by hand 😩
Excellent job and an astonishing job to achieve in that heat Well done
WOW! Perfect round happy bushes. Bushes are happy, wife is happy, everyone is happy ^.^
Great job Doc. I don't know if I can do it, but I am sure going to try since I always wanted to do it. Thank you for that great video !!!
Nice work Doc. Personally I prefer using Japanese shears on the ball shaped bushes, you get a really clean cut. But it takes forever!
3:45-should you have put some sort of cover down to catch all the trimmings? Just to make the job easier??
Except your tarp you walk over, potential tripping hazard and have to rake anyway. For surely have one close by.
Yeah, and if you pull the trimmings off and not recut them it is less mess as well.
M R trip hazard my ass.... 🤣
sure, it's less work, but he didn't care because he was laying fresh mulch afterward.

Great job! My trimmer gets so heavy for me. Time to do mine!
How could you hate such a beautiful bush!
thank you for posting this. It made my life easier.
Very nice! I do it the same way on my round "pom-pom" bushes. You have to keep using a smooth flowing motion that is rounded and not herky jerky little cuts. My neighbors never do theirs well.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and keeping it simple. I can't wait to try your bush trimming tips and trick on my bushes and shrubs.
Hey great video was wondering what your thoughts on about mulch and termites does mulch attract them? I was always afraid to put mulch too close to the house . a lot of different opinions on this . thanks in advance for your input.
I'd like to see an episode on outdoor lighting basics.
1.Had no idea how to do this.
2. Watched this video.
3. Knew how to do this.
4. Thank you!
Thank you for the good tips. Please tell me what is the name of the big bush?
When you hedge them bushes in ball shape. How do you get all the leaves out of the flower beds for it to still look good? Thanks for all the awesome videos on how to become a hedger.
Look for the BUSH BIB video on our channel.
What type of bushes are those that you made into the ball shape?
I lay down a tarp, then cut, then drag out the tarp, fold it and shake it out into my trash 🗑...kinda easier than picking up thousands of sticks/leaves
Looks great though! Wanna come do mine? Lol
I use old sheets!

You are an artist sir. You're also very entertaining,
what the name of these trees/bushes?
I just found this channel. I definitely like it.
What do you think about using shears to do the small round hedges
What kind if plant is it ?
PA LAWN GUY> Doc I find that twisting the blade 20 degrees down in the direction you are moving gives me a cleaner cut on the surface. Great video.
I like the Booty Cut. I am SO glad this girl does LOW maintenance and has bushes only where the points of brick on the house is - 8. Just got through shortening my flowerbeds and put in perennials. Maintenance is once a year.
Your hard work looks beautiful. 👍
what type of bush is? and how long take to grow them that size.
What species are the small round bushes?
You’ve made me think twice about needing to transplant my shrubs, maybe they just need a trim. Thanks for the video!
I love your sense of humor.
really nice technique thanks for sharing, is there a particular name for these round small bushes?
Yard and Landscaping looks Awesome Doc, can u give some tips on trimming a Holly bush? Thanks for all of your great information !!

I used to have an afro
great content. i'm the smart handsome one you mentioned so i'm subscribed. 😆👍🏼
Can you please provide links of tools you are using? I am a new home owner trying to learn these things.
Nice work!... It looks like you have some solar landscape lights; can you tell us the brand & model? Also how many lumens?
"The wife wants round bushes"

Man I love your technique. Do you live in Dallas? I will hire you.
How do you keep the bush so volumized

Nice video Doc. Well done
how do you sharpen the blades.....dremel?
I loved how you did those little round bushes. You make it look so easy. Great tips thank you for your video. Now, can you come to Marion Illinois and do mine? 😁
You made look so easy. I will try it
Doc, are you gonna get with the Lawn Rebel?? That would be awesome!!
What kind of shrubs are the small round one,?
What brand trimmers do you use? Do you like battery or gas trimmers best?
what kind of machine you are using for cutting
Have you tried hard pruning to wood? Mine is like yours but want to cut half off.
The first bush in the video, what kind is it? Seems like it would make a good fast growing privacy hedge that would be hard to kill as you said.
What's kind of chainsaw to use electric or gas also what's brand? and how many inches? Thanks
Please.tell us the name of the bush!
Thanks for video. Will have some hedge balls to do so needed this. But I must ask what is that hated bush? And if you hate so much why not remove & stump grind it?
What is the first bush called? The one where you trimmed it to the ground.
I would like to know too!

Trim early evening, it's a heat stress issue. Right after trimming hose each bush as well.
Trimming in the heat is bad for the bush
boxwoods are very touchy.
Can i still cut my 20 year old jspanese boxwood? Or are old plants too old to shape?
Thanks for this. I hate trimming the hedges. I have a couple of arborvitae that have to be trimmed regularly. Will it gum up the blades if I use a powered hedge trimmer on these? If so, how do you clean them? Also do the blades on these ever have to be sharpened?
What brand trimmer are you using ? What do you recommend
Beautiful garden, glad to see your using Kobalt. All of my yard tools are Kobalt cordless incuding my mowers.
Wow...a big tree. They did a great job cutting it down. Verizon had to cut the vines from the tree in the back of my house thats was wrapped around the pole and the wires. I wish the neighbors have this tree cut down.
You seem cool. Thx for this vid and your tips. I’m a new subscriber.
Nice video! Where did you get the solar spotlights from???
