  • In this video, I am going to show you how and when to prune Pampas Grass. Pampas Grass should be pruned in late Winter/early Spring. You will need a good pair of loppers, some gardening shears, and a hedge trimmer if you have one.

Ty! I moved into a place 2 yrs ago. Last year for 2 bunches and some knee high flower bushes, the guy wanted $85 (i supply bags, city hauls away). This year people are telling me $110-250. Looks like im buying hedge trimmers to do it myself. They'll pay for themselves in 1 clipping!

I bind mine first with heavy cord and cut near the ground leaving one bundle of dead grass to carry away.

The problem is if you cut down too close to winter, water can sink into the hollow straws and damage the plant by frost bursting it. Depending on where you live it might not be a good idea to cut back pampas grass in the winter or early spring. Where I live (Denmark) it wouldnt be safe until late April/early May.

Great video, I really needed this tutorial. My Pampas grass is 2 years old and is a mess right now. I had no idea how to prune it. But is it going to grow back and flower this year?

Glad it was helpful! It should do yes because the flowering stems grow from the base every year.

Eeeek! I leapt back seeing the frog in your hand. I live right next to a canal and a man made pond so I'm inundated with them. Its a nightmare as I can't stand them lol. I'm glad I saw this video as the grass still isn't as low maintenance as I'd like. I want something I can just plant once and forget about..

Is mid May too late to cut it back? It' the only time of the year I'm at the property to do it.

    Useful video.
We moved into our house with pampass grass already grown in the garden. We didn’t touch it for 2 years and it never really looked any different. I cut the stems off in winter and used them for decor but they’ve not really shown any sign of growing back…
    What could this mean?

How long does it take for it to grow back? I'm worried about cutting any of my grasses in case they stay stumpy. 😅

I find if there in a sunny position they bounce straight back although I have noticed is there overcast with shade can take a couple of years to establish again
