Hearing that the grandma in the second case outlived both the kids’ parents and still hopes to make them their favorite roast broke my heart. The added element of bullying and their hopes to go see either their dad or grandma makes it even sadder.

That one about the bully's pisses me off so bad. Their families completely condoned their behavior and even HELPED them bully other children. That's insane. I would have a stroke if I ever found out my kid even pushed another kid!

Seriously! That goes beyond bullying. That whole family should have been arrested for felony assault on a child. I know it's easier to say than do that. I also know that previous generations didn't take bullying as seriously as they do now. But when a whole family is involved? That's just sick and they need to be weeded out like the backwoods trash they were.

I’m just guessing here, I would say they don’t, their just shell’s of their former self. How could any loving parent survive their heart being ripped out of their bodies. I know I would die of a broken heart even though I feel like “broken heart” doesn’t even measure up to what would be a gaping hole where my heart used to exist.

When I was 5 I walked home alone on a dare. I didn't know where I was going and understood adults to be authority figures. I paused and cried in front of a home. This nice lady scooted me in her house and called the school which called my dad. He picked me up and was furious! And another time I walked home at 9 but by then my dad would allow it. That time a bald man in a white van asked me to come over to him and see the dog he had in his van. At that moment I remembered what they taught in school about strangers! I said no and ran. Then I saw him hop in his van and peel out! And this is why kids should not walk alone especially a long time ago!

My advice to everyone, please please don't let small children walk home alone! Read my comments under ciera. Many times I was lucky to escape! Teach kids to run from people. Be brutally open and honest about pedafiles! In my life I've had 4 boy cuzents try stuff on me at 5yrs old, but they were slapped or punished by their parents for trying to rape me or kiss me! I had 1 uncle who tried to rape me and numerous strangers trying to lure me to their car! It exists! From 4yrs old to late teens! I was a normal kid who loved art and music and playing with friends! Be aware of their surroundings and dont trust all family members to be normal with them! Listen to them and encourage them to talk about things they are afraid to tell you! No where is safe! It can be a blink of a second with you there at a playground with your kid and someone lures them away! Talk to them about dangers! It will save them if they get into situations like these.

There is a very good reason why you don't leave children to navigate social situations alone. They simply cannot process the threat of danger. There minds wonder and they are easily manipulated. The 'it was a different time' brigade annoy the shit out of me. I could care less what era it is, you will never have anything more important and precious as your child. So guard them, protect them and keep an eye out for any child that you feel may slip through the cracks, and do something about it.

Exactly! I'm a 70's child and my Mum NEVER let us walk anywhere at that age. So even if times were different I'm glad my Mum was different at that time! We also had stranger danger drummed into our heads. I had kids late. I have a 6 and 9 year old and I'm so protective, teaching them stranger danger and supervising them online.

Queensland to Perth.... a brutal, lonesome trek. They most definitely succumbed to the harsh elements or were abducted by a truck driver. The idea they were killed by their bullies is ridiculous and doesn’t happen here in Australia. But many have gone missing doing a cross country hitch hike for the reasons I mentioned above.

I remember hearing about a serial killer in Australia that killed mostly foreign hitchhikers. Bring them to the woods and hunt them, etc. I wonder if they went missing around this time.

  • @Christophertracy09

That last story is why you should ALWAYS be honest about where you’re going when you leave the house! These girls were probably killed, and because they lied no one has any idea where to search for them. My guess is they went to meet some guys and they were raped and killed. The first case is another reason why you shouldn’t be letting kids walk home by themselves! I don’t understand that! There are freaks everywhere who could kill your babies, how can people be so negligent! I’m a mother and I can’t even fathom it.

  • @erinthesystem9608

This really has to be the most devastating thing to happen to a person- to have their child, their children, love them, and suddenly not know where they are or why they're gone, what happened, whether to hope or mourn. (If you move forward, are you forgetting, closing a door, leaving them? If you wait forever, are you stuck?) There's no answer to accept or get used to, and the last memory of them was probably really mundane because they'd be right back. Maybe you'd get stuck reliving THAT moment ("I yelled at her to get her coat on, instead of hugging her!") The people who take these kids might redeem themselves by admitting to their murders, as even that knowledge is better for loved ones than just MISSING, of never knowing where they went, and never knowing what to feel.

U have to teach children how to fight back...how to not be lured...how to always think of safety...not to go in secluded places especially alone...like in inner city they have little bodegas... these lil stores can be empty at certain parts of the day n u never know if the owner can harm you if u go in there all alone...but yea fight...kick...scream...bite...throw things...gouge the eyes...pick up items as a weapon...do everything u can to get away

I can’t believe how many people are shocked that a 5 and 6 year old walked from school alone in 1984. That was standard. I did, as did all the other kids in my elementary school who were walkers. Parents only picked up kids who had to cross major roads. Helicopter parenting is a new phenomenon. And not a good one.

I walked alone to school from first grade, through a forest..that was back in 1970's in Scandinavia. Nothing bad ever happened. I had no roads to cross. In winter I was skiing that same way,as did many other pupils.

Helicopter parenting is not allowing your child to learn from mistakes because you fear them getting hurt... letting a child walk home without an adult when they are still learning to read is downright irresponsible.
