      Spinster was used when a woman was unmarried at 23 and older.
      42 and never married is an old maid since that’s past the reproductive prime. I’d say it is negative. I grew up in a cult like religious community and my friends and I were all afraid of being spinsters. This was only about 8-10 years ago we still used that word but that community was pretty old fashioned. I married at 22 and married outside that faith, thank goodness.

    • @cyl742
      @cyl742 3 роки тому +5

      Even if they could retrieve the DNA, there would be little chance to find out who murdered her. With no suspect, DNA retrieval from descendants isn't possible. We are very lucky these days to have the DNA tool.

    • @cyl742
      @cyl742 3 роки тому +6

      @N M I know this has been done,, but truthfully this DNA is from a few spatters of blood (unless I misunderstood). DNA degrades over time, and just how long it lasts depends on how well it's preserved. Factors such as exposure to heat, water and sunlight can cause the molecule to degrade faster, according to Slate. The best way to preserve DNA is by freezing it, and sealing it in vacuum-packed container. I would doubt that was done.

    It makes perfect sense that she'd visit night clubs in a different city. My dad grew up in MA in the 40's and 50's and said that school teachers were expected to live these super pure lives, never drinking, etc. They were supposed to live like saints or their reputations would be dragged through the mud. The gossip mill could be nasty. So, hence, a lonely school teacher becomes reclusive in her own town and then travels to a different city to date and enjoy herself. It probably had nothing to do with the murder, but who knows.

  • @grace7-9
    @grace7-9 3 роки тому +35

    If the only items found in the safety deposit box were related to her father's religious works, then Beryl had most likely retrieved whatever else had been in the box during her visit prior to her murder. The mysterious checks she'd been writing to an unknown recipient seem like blackmail? Or possibly maintenance. Had she had a child resulting from her secret social life? Or was someone blackmailing her regarding these activities? I'm in no way casting aspersions on her character. It's also possible that the murderer wanted to gain whatever had been removed from the safety deposit box since nothing else was missing. But the extreme violence in her murder indicates deep anger, hatred or resentment, retribution rather than simple burglary or robbery. Crime scene immaculately cleaned up...female perpetrator? (Fingernail marks on Beryl's neck.) Or meticulously planned, calmly executed, not chaotic, impulsive crime of passion. Kitchen knife broken into 3 pieces, but not the murder weapon...used by Beryl in self-defense?

      Good summary as noted by another commentator.. It definitely wasn’t a burglar or robber considering the house or her valuables weren’t stripped. I think the answer lies in her secretive social life - so your idea about blackmail is actually plausible. I feel like she got involved with a married man and got blackmailed for it. When she refused to pay the blackmailer or assailant, she was killed. That’s my theory, at least.
      It also adds up considering she had a secretive social life, had barely any family and lived by herself.

    I have a feeling the connection was with the checks she had been writing to the first name only. She’d been writing these checks for quite some time and then stops suddenly a couple of weeks or so before the murder? Come on. Too convenient. They can’t be sure if it was a male or female and they couldn’t find the cancelled checks even though she was a meticulous book keeper. Whomever was receiving the checks may have been dependent on them in one way or another. $75 to $108 is nothing to sneeze at today (if you’re destitute) so it would be important to someone who lost the income. Being a school teacher all the years she was, put her in contact with a LOT of people, one of which may have been the person she was “helping”. She finally tires of this as it’s not helped at all only created an endless problem in her life. The idea that someone may have wanted to take something that was important only to them...the cancelled checks maybe or something that would easily identify them as the culprit.

    It occurs to me that whoever did this knew Beryl's habits. Killing her on a Saturday night was perfect timing. As Beryl stayed indoors on a Sunday it gave the killer over 24 hours to search the house, clean up and make an escape. Also, how were they able to achieve what they did with a dog in the house? Most dogs would at least make some noise if a stranger was walking around the rooms.
    It'd be interesting to know what happened to her Sunday newspaper. Was it picked up or was it left? If it was picked up, who did it? If it wasn't, why wasn't it reported earlier?

    So much at play here. I am hearing of a Baptist Pastor's Daughter who appeared to be living a double life. In Marblehead ,she was known as the 'Prim and Proper' School Teacher, but it appears she went to other towns to do business, such as Salem (any Occult connections ??) to retrieve a Fur Coat. I remember my Aunt Having a Mink Coat Back in the day and stored it ,BUT locally in her own town ,not miles away. Looks like Beryl liked a night life and Night clubs. But you noticed she went to other towns to pursue that. I am sure she felt the community of Marblehead would no longer buy the Spinster School Teacher persona if she was "clubbing' around town. keeping up appearances really seemed to matter to her. I am going to guess and say the person who murdered her was someone she was paying off , writing checks to. Maybe that person was blackmailing her by saying they would tell everyone what she was really all about and she offered to 'pay' for that person's silence. Later,weeks before she died,she changed her mind , probably tired of being blackmailed ,and cut ties with this person...who ended up murdering her. But even writing a check ,that person who have to cash or deposit it and would have to have some form of valid ID . Not sure why that cannot be investigated more thoroughly ? Good Video .

    She never married but had an active dating life. None of them, from what the men said were sexual, just casual dates. So it's possible she was a virgin and not interested in changing that status. Maybe the person who killed her was badgering her for a physical relationship and when she kept refusing, he killed her. I know they said there were no signs of sexual assault, but that could be that after the guy killed her in the heat of the moment and rage, he was repulsed by his actions and ran. Just a theory.

      That was my immediate thought when it was mentioned that it could have been a strong female killer. 1 of only 2 close relatives is a PE teacher... 🚩🚩🚩 in my head.
      Was her cousin jealous Beryl was able to live a comfortable life as a teacher in comparison to her? Was her cousin having financial trouble? Could her cousin have been blackmailing her perhaps knowing Beryl was (maybe) attracted to women? Could also tie in with why she does not attend church - she could have been getting endless questions about when she is going to settle down, relationship status etc. Might have become too much to handle - and why she goes on "dates" with men casually but never struck a proper relationship with one...
      Sadly, we'll probably never find out what really happened...

    This is such a sad, horrible case. I grew up in this town and attended Glover School many years after this happened. I remember my mother telling me somewhat about this after she read the article in Yankee Magazine, but I never knew she was a teacher at Glover. I'm sure we could all speculate about 100 different ways, but we'll never know the truth. She seemed like a very private person who liked things her own way and it's a shame the terminology of the day used words like "spinster" to evoke a prim, unhappy, lonely person, when it seemed to me she preferred to keep things to herself - including her dating life. For those wondering about the dog, the Yankee Magazine article indicated that the dog had been kicked very hard most likely by the killer and that he was found with a "rib cage caved in" in the upstairs bedroom. 😞Nothing further written about his well being after that.

The fact that they didn’t leave any bloody fingerprints or shoe prints is really suspect. And a broken knife that wasn’t the murder weapon???? Knifes don’t just break into 3 pieces because someone was cutting some hard meat. That knife saw some violent action possibly against the killer.
