    A note on the lever gym;
    I have owned two of the full sized (3 station) Powertec branded levergyms.
    I have also owned one of the compact (single station) versions that was a clone of the Powertec version.
    All three of those machines were made of larger diameter steel tubing than the one you have there. They were also comprised of single-piece sections, so that gap in the upright literally doesn't exist in the ones I owned because the entire segment was one piece, rather than two pieces linked together. The disadvantage is that each piece of the gym (when assembling it) is larger and heavier. The huge benefit, though, is that the machine is much more sturdy and can handle much more weight, use, and abuse.
    I am assuming yours was designed the way it was in order to prioritize easy, cheap shipping (Amazon?).
    Obviously, overall the machines will all function the same. But when it comes to that specific "con", it is definitely unique to your specific machine, not lever gyms as a whole.

    I really appreciate your comparisons and comments on devices such as these. You answer a lot of the questions I have about them. One of the points of interest I have about the e-gyms is the ability one may have to increase the eccentric resistance in relation to the concentric for each repetition. At the first World Gym owners convention back in''87(?), Larry Scott was showcasing a line of electronic Lifecycle strength machines. He set the bicep curl to deliver 25% more eccentric resistance than the concentric, and ran me through one set of curls to failure. The next day, I couldn't comb my hair. One thing I noticed when you were doing a vertical press on the Lever gym, the forward angle was such, it looks like I could do a shoulder press, even with my Frozen Shoulder. I have found that with the x3 bar, if I use an underhand grip, I can get it almost nose level. I am also considering getting a Landmine device and a bar. Thanks again, Mike.

      You probably got some great stories if you were at the first worlds gym owners convention. And yes, I think that lever gym press would feel great with people with bad shoulders. I actually prefer using a neutral grip for mine.

      @@hybridresistance Yes, and some I can't mention. When I was still working at 24 Hour Nautilus, the most comfortable machine to use for overhead presses was the Compound Shoulder. It used a neutral grip.

    There are so many issues I dislike about “smart” gyms but to keep things simple, some of us who work with tech, computers, in front of screens all day NEED a mental break from monotonous button mashing, scrolling, ****-ing updates, etc. I like lifting weights and running to escape/take a break from work

    Wow, great home gym where you have such a selection of riches to workout with. Anyway, what could be helpful is if you post videos of a full body workout on each machine, so that we can evaluate the options. Not a follow along, but an abbreviated workout video that shows a full body rundown of each. Just a thought.

    I think the lever gym is much better buy, even after the cost of plates which last time I checked they went down a bit. If I had the room I might potentially consider it. I also agree that going to failure with the e-gym is potentially a dangerous situation. And I think even though your loosing some resistance, because of the lever gyms lever system, I do think it’s much safer, and you can load on more than 220. With the exception for pull ups as you said, it might just be a factory defect. You could definitely do total body on it. Still think a barbell, some dumbbells, or a adjustable one, some bands, and some kind of cable machine, like a TG are where it’s at. Put I do like the lever gym, maybe one day. God bless bro.

      @hybridresistance  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks man. I’d say it depends on the person, but I’m right there with you that the lever gym might be the overall winner when you consider budget and core needs of people in their home gym.

    Great stuff as usual mike!! Thanks for that. I’ve had the speediance for 2M now and I am with u on everything. It does add up so little that I end up not even bothering turning it on. Let’s get on with a good mix of long lasting versatile touchable and useful pieces of equipment. Quick and dirty examples: Ironmaster, Clench fitness, Rep fitness, Prx, powertec. Thanks!!

    My equipment consists of a Rep PR5000 Athena dual Selectorized 4 post setup with a Selectorized Lat Low Row this is a compact setup that I did and I have the Gym Monster and X3 system and other band stuff. The speediance unbalance that is felt can be because it uses 2 separate motors. Other e gyms that I have used only had one motor and doing exercises were 100% smoother. A lot more owners of the Gym monster are finally coming out against the ring and I am glad to hear that. I can’t stand that ring, I accidentally and constantly hit the knob that adjusts the resistance without me waiting to do so. I’ve tried to wear the ring differently but it still continues. I have read on speediance FB page weeks ago supposedly they are coming out with smart handles again , I’m hoping they do.

      This is true for sure. This lever gym wasn't a horrible build, but not one that I'd want to break down and do again if I didn't have to. The ability to roll and bring the Gym Monster in my house or the garage is a huge selling point.

      @@hybridresistanceSorry I was not clear. Yes, I was referring to the lever gym. I have never used the PowerTec, and I am not really all that familiar with it. The Lever Gym *may be* a better buy if space is not an issue and one does not want to change plates for a given exercise. I wanted the Speediance due to VERY limited space, and I rather not have to store and change plates. I ended up with Inspire FTX functional trainer that I really enojoy using ($1K at Costco). I consider myself creative when it comes to resistance training, so if I need weights that my machine don't do, I find a way that's conveniant and works. After all, weight is weight. My other resistance workout gear include a 50Lb weight vest, PowerBlocks up to 90Lbs.

    • @hybridresistance

      Probably not as versatile and quick to transition exercises, but I would say a lever gym beats a TG over muscle / strength building potential because of the many ways to progressively increase resistance.

Before long, you won't even have personal knowledge to draw from as these machines are going to correct your posture, your technique, show you the most beneficial movement, etc. I don't find digitization of anything to be good in the long run. I have a Tonal at my house (along with a crappy barbell set and a set up adjustable dumbbells from Bowflex that go to 90 lbs. each). I really like the Tonal for its build quality and adaptability. I know there are lots of complaints about it having to be installed by Tonal contractors and bolted to studs, but I have no problem with that. I had one issue with the Tonal, and it took a bit of back and forth, and sending them a video of the problem, but they ultimately took care of it to my satisfaction. I've had that for two and a half years. I recently got a Speediance Gym Monster for my office so that I can work out over lunch. While it's far from being as good as the Tonal in terms of build quality, accessory quality, flexibility, etc., it's adequate to meet my lunchtime workout needs. I've only had it for three weeks, so I don't know about its long-term durability. The main shortcomings of the Gym Monster are: since it's not bolted to the floor or wall, several times, I've rocked it while performing lifts; the height of the highest mounting point isn't really high enough to get full extension on lat pull downs and, additionally, it's not directly above. It let's me program my workouts and even program movements, so I've designed two workouts that I alternate, one for upper and one for lower body. The reason for the smart gyms is that I simply don't have room, either at home or at work, for a lever gym. The Tonal takes up, effectively, no room at all when not in use, the Speediance can be folded to a small footprint or conveniently moved in my office. Overall, I'm happy with both choices, though I've spent something like $9K to implement both of them.

I used to use low budget dumbbells and bodyweight, I still do sometimes, but I wanted some way to hit all body parts with good resistance. Like I said, the Speediance is adequate.
