    Ha. I commented here a little over 5 years ago when I was 13. Nice to see you're still helping people out! Im 19 now. Still got that 4runner. Gonna be working on it some more pretty soon for plugs and coils. Got my own tools and supplies now, but I wont forget this video guiding me through my first major part replacement on that car. Thanks again!

    I just revisited this video after getting a new battery (Interstate Megatron Plus) and a high output alternator (140Amps) and will tackle the alternator swap this weekend. The original is still going strong after 17 years and 240K miles BTW! Thanks again for the great quality video and instructions! While I'm in there, will also replace my 50mm tension bolt with the preferred 90mm and call it a day!

    One step that I did to make this job easier, I removed the air box assembly up to the flex hose intake. The same thing that you would do if changing your spark plugs on passenger side.
    It made getting to the hidden adjuster bolt that’s under the power steering pump so much easier. I almost took off the fan because access is TIGHT! but got through it with fan on.
    It is still a tough job on an older vehicle, on my uncle’s 1999 4Runner SR5, and I’m just a DIY home garage guy.
    I still prefer a single serpentine belt with a tensioner pulley. Plus don’t have to worry about belt tension adjustments. 15 minute change verses 2 hours for me. And no scraped up arms lol.

    Used this video to help a friend replace his alternator belt on a 1997 4runner.
    One problem we ran into was the tension bolt on the power steering pump. It's almost impossible to get to because the ac lines run right in front of the head of the bolt. Our solution was to remover the air box to make it easier to use a wrench to get onto the bolt. Still time consuming but easier than fighting with it from an odd angle.
    Other than that, this video was dead on accurate!
    Thanks for posting 😆

      One thing to note, at my local Ace Hardware they didn't have the 90mm length but had an M8x1.25mm 50mm full threaded bolt which ended up being just long enough to put the belt over the pulley and start tightening the tension. I think 90mm is definitely preferred but you don't actually need it to be that long since half way thru it's loose enough to take the belt off and put the new belt back on.

    Cool I have to tighten my belts after my mechanic left em loose and my truck started to squeak on a cold start. Asked him to tighten them and back a year later with the same issue. The alternator tension came loose again or my thought is my guy didn’t pay attention. It would help if you could twist the belt, that’s the only way I could tell mine was loose compared to the power steering belt.

    My 2002 Tundra has same engine, and has gotten a loud morning squeal over the last month (January). I can't reproduce it after the engine is warm, so diagnosing it is hard as a novice. How long and how much would you charge to replace all drive belts? I bought it used 5 yrs ago in very good condition. Belts do show some minor cracking on ribs, and minor fraying, so thinking might as well replace all the drive belts. I'm thinking this is a doable weekend project for a novice.

    Hey man. I know I've already asked you before, but me and my dad have another problem with our 4Runner. My Mom was driving home from work, and tried to pick up her purse while driving, but the strap was around the Manual Brake handle (The one next to the Gear Select), so she yanked the purse up, and the lever came up fast with it. The Brake engaged sign came up on the dash, and didn't turn off after she pushed the lever back down. A few seconds later a Tone sounded. When she got home, me and my dad found what appeared to be brake fluid leaking from under the car, and the Reservoir was empty. We are pretty sure she stretched or snapped the cable, I know you've helped me before, which is why I came here. I hope you have some info. Thanks!!

      @@TheRoninChronicle Hey man. Thanks for your reply. My dad sent it to a friend who is a Mechanic to fix it, it ended up that she snapped the pressure line with abs, and that cause it. To put it simply, The Vehicle's ABS was trying to keep the tires from locking, which already puts a tremendous amount of pressure, while she was hitting the gas, causing it to snap. Luckily the mechanic had the right parts and fixed it. Thanks though! And Once again, Thanks for the alternator install help. The Vehicle runs smoother than ever!

    • @Alex-xp2lb
      @Alex-xp2lb 4 роки тому

      Nothing, I believe that this step was taken merely because he intended to replace the alternator... Just be cautious around the alternator if you choose to not disconnect the battery...

    On the A/C belt, after I loosened the idler pulley tensioner bolt, the idler pulley still doesn't move, so the belt isn't even close to going on - so now what? It doesn't matter how much I loosen it, the idler pulley doesn't move. Do I just hammer on the idler pulley til it moves or what?

    • @TheRoninChronicle
      @TheRoninChronicle  6 років тому

      Hello, that is strange, I would guess that it is just stuck and needs some force to free it. It may just need a bit of the hammer as you suggested to free it. I would try that. Let me know if it works. If not, i will reach out to my 4runner group to see if they might know. Thank you for watching!

    • @dannylandrum7899

    I might be too late but oh well. I wanted to ask a few questions, First, should you be able to turn the alternator pulley with your hand if you don't have belt on it? Second, the Alternator belt snapped on my 02 4Runner, so do we have to remove the power steering and Cooling Belts to install a new belt? Or will I be able to do it while installing a new Alternator? (Without removing the other belts) Sorry for the large questions. Really need to fix this before school. Only car our family has. Thanks!

      @@auson8088 My dad and I did this off the video to replace the Alt. and replace the belt, we don't have tension gauge, so we eyeballed it. Works fine, but make sure you're confident with eyeballing. You can judge tension by size, so however many inches of tension are stated in the video. I say you could use a ruler, as it is by size.
