- Toyota 3.4 Timing Belt Replacement
This is an updated video, I had released this video a week ago but the video got flagged for Copyright Claim. So I had to go back and edit the video. In this video I have a 3.4 Toyota that needs the timing belt replaced due to maintenance. I will show you how to replace this timing belt and some of the tools I use. Let's go get it.

FYI the 3.4 thermostat goes in upside down in the 6 o’clock. Not sure why but that’s what it says in the manual
Thx
did my tbelt on my 95 T100 in 3 hours... thanks for the information
Awesome that is great to hear. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing your quirks along with the process.. These are frustrating but are all part of getting the job done.
Very true. Thanks for watching.
Very useful video thanks for showing how it truly works out 95%of the time instead of the usual life's flawless videos two thumbs up bro
Thank you very much and I appreciate you watching.
Excellent video, man. Thanks for your time.
You are very welcome thank you for watching.
Great video!! I am impressed!! Thank you!!!
Thank you very much and I appreciate you watching.
Here is my take on that harmonic balancer. I just took one off today actually. While it was very snug side to side, ie trying to pry it off, wasn't happening. What I ended up doing is, it had a very slight looseness turning, ie clockwise ad counter clockwise just a tiny bit as it contacted the woodruff key. This was enough with outward pressure to slide it off the crank.:) now just looking for the bolts holding the ac compressor tensioner housing.
Good job getting it off. Good luck with the rest of the job. Thanks for watching
When i say I've seen Toyota 3.4s with over 600,000 miles on them someone always complains it has a timing belt. I just say, yeah but it's an easy one and you get a new Toyota water pump, an idler, and a tensioner when you change it. It's like the 3.0 in the cars, that engine will go and go and go with good maintenance. I know a lot of cars with timing chains that came from the factory with weak tensioners, have bad guides from the factory, and the chains stretch and it's a lot more costly to fix. And then there's the Nissan 3.3. Not an easy timing belt to replace but a very long lasting engine if you stay on top of its maintenance. I'd rather have the Nissan 3.3 50 times over no 100 times over than the Nissan 3.5 that came after it. Even with the engine removed it's a lot of work to replace the head gaskets that are inevitable. There's all kinds of issues our domestic modern engine's have that are much worse than having to replace a timing belt every 60-100,000 miles.
Yes you are very correct the timing belt is easy and the engine is a good engine. Thank you for watching.
I wish more videos were like this!!! It’s so helpful a lot when things are explained and you can watch step by step on how to do things with explanations of what to do and not to do and why. This was extremely helpful and I’ll definitely subscribe.
Thank you very much, honestly the whole reason I started my channel is because when I first starting working on diesels I did not have any training or any techs to help me. I would research on UA-cam what to test and how for a symptom, or if it was a repair I would skim through for the important info. I am happy to pass a long my experience and love to hear when it helps people out. If you have any questions message me on Instagram. I have actually helped quite a few people with specific things on Instagram. Thank you for watching I appreciate it.
Solid info T
Thank you and I appreciate you watching.
I have a 1/2" electric and a half inch air. And then for really stubborn i have a 3/4in air. I'm going to have to replace the air compressor one of these days but I've never found anything the 3/4" wouldn't turn. I'm sure there would be if i used it much more.
Very nice, I am actually considering. getting a 3/4. thanks for watching
About to have to do this. Gonna replace the radiator as well, maybe it won’t to to much of a nightmare
No it is not a nightmare at all. With the radiator out it is easier because you have more room. Thanks for watching.
@@NutsandBoltswithTone is when she’s a little rusty. 😅
Leaner running engine's run hotter. That's the why on "CA" versus Federal. There's only so much something like an EGR valve can compensate. Do not remove the EGR valve on a modern advanced timing engine. It actually adds HP (not much but it's still a positive) because the injection of inert gas is behind the throttle valve. So you have increased volume that's cooler than the combustion gas mix ever could be left alone with increased base & total timing. People who claim they removed their EGR and then got better gas mileage failed to mention it was because their system was not functioning correctly and the valve was stuck open at least partially. If it's functional you always get better mileage and have lower emissions with a slight bump in power. Anyway leaner burning California emissions cars have hotter oil so an oil cooler is installed to keep the oil about 220-230 deg once the engine is fully warmed.
Thank you for watching.
Do you happen to have a link for the head lamp you used towards the end in the video? Thanks!
I actually do not have a link to it as I don't recommend it. Thanks for watching. Here is the one I recommend and wear everyday

As long as you have all the timing marks lined up with the engine top dead center compression stroke does it really matter where the lines on the belt is
If you are referring to the lines on a new belt the answer is not however those lines are there to make sure that all the cams and crank all line up correctly. So I mean I guess the lines do matter just not sure what you are referring to. If you message me on my Instagram I can try to help you more. Thanks for watching.
After you have all the timing marks lined up and the belt on you should be good to go. It’s recommended that you turn the engine over two times by hand. And when you do the belt marks and the cam marks won’t be lined up any more.
Maybe after several hundred revolutions they might come together and then be off again after the next revolution.
Bout too do the same timing belt on an aussie lux 😅 she is a little more crusty then that one lmao
What is the water pump bolt trq? Great video!
Message me your vehicle info on my Instagram and I can look it up for u. Thanks for watching
DO YOUR CRANK AND CAM SEALS WHILE YOUR IN THERE.
Yup
What size bolts do you use for the harmonic balance to remove it
That's what I would like to know !
I'm not sure I just have a box of different bolts for all different vehicles. Thanks for watching
What happens if the belt skip time or isn't done properly?
Then the valves can hit the pistons.
What I have done in the past is to put a piece of cardboard inbetween the fan and the radiator that way there is a cushion so the fan doesn’t hit the radiator.
That is a great idea. Thanks for watching.
Do you need to drain the coolant if you arent messing with the water pump? I would imagine you wouldnt, right?
Yeah you do because you need to remove upper radiator hose, also why would you not replace water pump? That seems odd to me. I would personally never replace a timing belt with the water pump not even on my own vehicle. Thanks for watching and good luck.
@@NutsandBoltswithTone agreed, its a friends car and her timing belt broke, she doesnt have the funds to replace the water pump too. If its not leaking we will send it so she can get back on the road
@@BlackThrasherrr that makes sense. Good luck
So you removed the AC 4 bolts and AC and ac bracket comes off
You have to remove compressor from bracket then the ac bracket. 4 bolts in compressor then 4 or 5 in bracket. Thx for watching
What if the belt is broke?
Then you cannot use paint markers, you have to align all the sprockets and make sure it is timed properly. Then roll the engine over 2 full times and confirm all your timing marks lines up. Thanks for watching.
so my tensioner pulley didnt move freely but i did everything you did
That is strange. Message me on Instagram and I can help u out. Thanks for watching
How can you move the tensioner on top @@NutsandBoltswithTone
Do you have a special tool to set on time the pulleys on top
@juanglezromero9360 I'm not sure what your asking. Message me a little more info on my Instagram I'll try to help you out. Thanks for watching.
Should have used a pipe wrench and a breaker bar. Never not works
Ok glad that worked. Thanks for sharing. Thank you for watching.
Wasted a lot of time with that CA emissions water pump comment, they are all the same U.S. fed and ca. They have that inlet
Well maybe it was only certain years I am not sure, I just know that everytime I do a timing belt on one of these I have learned to tell the service advisor if it is FED or CA. I have got the wrong water pumps so many times that I learned my lesson. The reason for the different water pump is if it has an external oil cooler on driver side of block. Sorry if you wasted your time I am just trying to help people out. Thank you for watching. In the future if you watch any of my videos and have a question about something feel free to message me on Instagram and I can try to help you out.
The old belt didn’t look that bad
Nope, was doing it for maintenence. Thanks for watching
Right, how many miles on this?
