    I have been driving over 50 years, and never had an accident, or a speeding ticket, now with that being said, it doesn't mean I couldn't cause an accident, but I have always tried my hardest to pay attention to what's going on with other traffic, and abide by the traffic rules. I always said you have to have eyes all the way around your head to drive in traffic these days, and always watch out for the other guy, because you never know what they may do! I live in Ontario Canada and it's the same here as it is in Vancouver, we have bad drivers all across Canada. The biggest problem on the road in bad weather, like snow is, speed, and not driving to road conditions. Too many people get over confident with their driving, and think they can handle the snow and ice when they can't, and that goes for the guys who drive the big rigs. It would be nice to see many of these bad drivers get their license pulled, but there are not enough cops on the road to make that happen.. The only defense you have is drive carefully yourself and slow down in bad weather, know what you can handle, and how to handle your car incase of snow and ice!

      I too have been driving about 50 years with no accidents except for one very strange one. It happened at a speed of less than 1 mph and took almost two minutes from the point I lost control to the point I hit the car in front of me. It happened in Edmonton on 66 St. beside Londonderry Mall. I was south bound and the road was black ice. When I turned onto the road and saw the gleam on the road, I touched my break to test the surface and immediately, I slid towards the curb. When I bumped the curb, the car bounced to the left and went sideways. That piece of road has a very slight down grade and I just kept sliding. At the bottom of the road was a stopped car and very slowly, I got closer and closer. My girlfriend kept arguing with me to do something as we got closer. And I kept telling her I had no control. We argued back and forth and as we got closer and closer she started to get mad at me. Finally after nearly two minutes we reached the stopped car and the side of my car bumped the back of hers. We spun around and stopped headlight to headlight. I got out of my car to check on the other driver and she was looking behind her car. I asked if she was alright and she said. "I think someone hit me but there's no one here." I pointed to the front of her car where my car faced hers. She didn't want to believe me that I was the one who hit her. My car was in front and she was hit in the back. Other than a slight dent on the side of my car, no other damage. Possible the slowest car accident in history. Note: The reason the lady was sitting there on the road was she too slid down the slight grade and after she finally stopped, she was too scared to go again.

      Governments profit by having more trucks speeding. The economy relies on this criminal behavior. Truckers love to kill amateur hockey teams and cyclists. Civic duty would solve the problem, but our economy is so crappy that we need lawless companies who can profit by perpetually breaking the law. Civic duty would also end the families speeding and blowing stop signs every Family Day in Canada. But civic negligence rules our streets and highways and the death toll is far worse than terrorism. Criminals love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ed, our capitals are lawless places and the federal capital sees that most of our civil servants are completely unacquainted with civic duty - or a CONSCIENCE. Parents in Ottawa love to blow stop signs when dropping off or picking up their kids from school. They take the exact same ethics to work. The poo is flowing and only civic duty will make patriots proud of their future................................................................. Right Kids?

    I've been driving for over 30 years, 20 of those professionally in Alberta, in the BC Interior, in Ontario and now here and have a lot of winter driving experience - my car has snow tires, has AWD and driving here in the snow is a struggle. As soon as I get the car on the Coq or back into the Interior, where the snow is fluffy and compacts nicely, winter driving is an absolute blast - get back here with our wet, slushy, icy snow and its an absolute nightmare. The snow we get here grabs you and doesn't let go. Anyone who goes skiing, knows exactly what types of snow can do to your skiing performance, and the same goes for driving.
    In regards to the buses and snow tire arguments, I've been driving buses for 20 years in cities, highways in BC and Alberta, transit buses, highway coaches and I've never driven a bus with snow tires because they don't make a noticeable difference which is why no transit agency uses snow tires. I've never been in an accident, I've never slid out of control and I've never gotten stuck with a bus that didn't have snow tires.

      Right...People blame the lack of snow tires for some of the extreme problems we have had recently around Vancouver...spoilers, snow tires do not help at all, if you don't know how to drive. In these last weeks, I had metal studded snow tires on my van, and even at creeping, 3 km, inching forward at a stop light...when I abruptly hit the break, I slide incredibly. If you think you won't have problems with snow tires...think again, I suspect that a lot of these people actually had them .

    Since immigrating to Van almost a decade ago from Ireland I'm always amazed by how little snow driving skill every driver here has. The city panics and shuts down for the slightest snow, no one drives as they should for the conditions. If people didn't get hurt or die it'd be hilarious. The average driver here is among the least skillful I've ever dealt with anywhere in the world. I also spent a brief time as an ICBC Driver Examiner, and can absolutely lay blame there. It's so laughably easy to pass that road test.
    Edit: About the second last clip for the roundabout. The problem there is no one over here is taught how to drive around them and ICBC doesn't test for them. They have specific criteria to test everything but the criteria for roundabouts mixes them up with traffic circles, which are totally different. In most countries you also signal when you're on the roundabout and when you're leaving, so it's a left signal for when you're going around and right towards the exit you're going to take. However here it's a demerit point on the test if you signal as that will, and I'm not shitting you "confuse other road users". So officially here the Motor Vehicle Act says there should only be one vehicle on any roundabout at a time so they're just 4 way stops and totally remove the time saving benefits of the roundabout while throwing in all the things about 4 way stops that increase crashes. If it's not clear, I don't have much respect for ICBC as a testing organisation.

    The day after the big snowfall a few weeks ago, I dug my car out of the plowed bank it was in, got up to Blundell, went to go turn left and an Audi SUV went straight through the red light. They were speeding for a dry road, yet alone when it was snowy and icy on a hardly plowed out. I was close enough I could see they weren't even trying to stop, I don't think they even saw me or the red light they just went through. Not a lot of drivers left in Richmond that have never had an accident, I only have only made it 20 years because you always have to assume people can really be that clueless when driving around you haha.

    Fascinating to see for me. I've been driving since 1972 in Vancouver and never caused an accident. I drove Taxis, Limousines, single axle trucks and many buses, mainly Tour Buses. It has always astonished me just how selfish some drivers, or cyclists or pedestrians are who do not pay for their asinine decisions to ignore others as though they are the only people using a road, parking lot or sidewalk. I am happy to say though that most people do care about what other people need to do so we all get home safe. For a real challenge try driving a large bus in heavy traffic according to a timed schedule avoiding all the idiots in vehicles, bicycles or on foot while keeping a load of paying customers amused and educated with constant talking which requires you to think ahead of not only what you are doing physically but what to say next to give them the possible experience you can create.

    Now that we seem to get more snow in Vancouver and clearly city never having enough budget for it we should all learn how to drive in the snow. Once you lose traction in your rear tire, don't try to steer your way out of it unless you know how, and most of us don't. Just let the wheel go for a bit, the front wheel eventually arrange itself to the direction of momentum. Just when the wheel is in a position you want the vehicle to go, hold and brake slowly. I drift my way out of small neighbourhood roundabouts this way in snow.
    Even if you need to hit a hard brake do a self ABS and break it into short spurs of brakes. The wheel will definitely lock up and you get less braking if you just press hard. Obviously go slower and try not to overtake another vehicle.
    Just remember your goal is to get you and your car home in one piece not fast!

    "Professional drivers" caused more chaos on the roads from Burnaby to Surrey and Coquitlam than average citizens. Transit Buses were abandoned and stacked 3 deep across Lougheed Hwy, blocking the main option to Hwy 1. When you made it to the Port Man, 2 Dump Trucks with trailers were parked and abandoned in the center through lanes. Other Semi tractor trailers lost their speed from this blockage and seemed unaware that the HOV lane is always closed for Winter Maintenance when its snows. If Government Funded Crown Corporations and Professional Transportation business cannot drive during snow storms why would anyone expect the average commuters be any better?

    People really need to learn how their ABS works. Yes, when it engages it takes forever to stop but at least you won't go in the boonies. Hold the pedal firmly to the floor and steer where you want to go and let it do the work. I hit black ice once and was terrified, not least because of the cars crashed all round me, but managed to weave through everyone in one piece even though it took a very long time to stop and all kinds of noises :)

      Yup. Pump those brakes yourself. Many times the ABS will come on while sliding, which helps maintain steering control, but doesnt help stop in the snow/ice. Pumping the brakes helps break the slide. Learn how to drive without the nanny tech.

    • @tchevrier
      @tchevrier Рік тому

      @@Skippyfugnugget Bad advice.
      "many times the ABS will come on while sliding,..." - No. ABS will apply every time while sliding. That's precisely what it does and what it is for.
      "but doesn't help stop in the snow/ice" - yes it most certainly does. There are many many variables when it comes to stopping distances so a blanket statement like that is incorrect.
      "pumping the brakes helps break the slide". - what exactly do you think the ABS is doing? It's pumping the brakes before the slide occurs. It's reacting to your tires locking up before they lock up way way before you react yourself.
      C'mon man. Learn to drive properly with ABS.

    9:58, the roundabout is not using a curved approach but rather straight appoch that make driver has less chance to slow down and prepare for the roundabout. And to make it worse pedestrian ctross is added to that on the blindside of the driver and there is not a speed bump to alert driver at all.

    • @jond3929
      @jond3929 Рік тому

      Sounds like a very poor design. The beef I have with roundabouts (at least where i live) is that they're sooooo rare that when drivers do see one, it might be their first and only time seeing one. So they end up not knowing what to do. I'm not defending poor drivers but it's something to consider.

These idiots zipping around on their bikes (the worst entitled offenders of them all) and scooters have no sense of anything except entitlement. They think they can do whatever they want (running through red lights, stop signs, no turn signals, etc) without repercussion. Make them get licensed and insured.
