Edit: Also, never lock up your breaks in the snow, you can't turn, and the car goes sideways if you try. If you don't have ABS, and feel them locking up, ease off the pedal a bit.
I drove on snow 2 days ago 🥶😭 and now am watching this . Be safe everyone , no matter what slow were going to we still reach the destination . The key to safe driving in snow is being smooth with the steering wheel, accelerator, and brakes.

In a lot of these cases if people unlock their wheels they can maneuver the car , its not gonna stop anyway , but you can better control the slide. Ice ice is still ice but sometimes its just enough
80% of the video is Russia, the city of Vladivostok. I live here. The city of Vladivostok is all located on the hills, many drivers are caught in the snow in traffic jams on the city’s streets. Slippery becomes very fast because of the high humidity (the city of Vladivostok is located on the seashore) the snow quickly turns into ice and becomes very slippery, neither the winter tires nor the master save
i never understand when people do this, lot of black ice vids from the usa as well, there is one where there is a couple in a semi-truck and the lady passenger wants to jump out constantly in the middle of everything while cars are still coming at highway speeds crashing into eachother... The safest place in this situation is the car/ truck in this case, unless you are right next to the side of the road and you can get off of it safely...
Just some simple advice.... if your car is skidding and you still on the brakes.. your a passenger... you have nothing to lose by coming off the brakes and trying to steer and if your lucky regain control
@World Traveller That's the thing. Don't use brakes, but you are picking up more and more speed. Tapping isn't cutting it. Many modern cars don't have low gear. If you continue picking up speed you are going right through a stop at the bottom of the hill and into traffic. If you do brake you are sliding off the road or into oncoming traffic! In some cases it's a no win scenario. Best thing to do on some days is stay home.

YOU CANT BRAKE AND STEER AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! You can only choose one in these cases, so if braking isn't working, steer! It would have avoided most of these accidents.
ABS only works when it detects the rear wheels are moving faster than the front, and if you have a 4 wheel brakeing car, all 4 wheels will lock up when you press the brake due to the ice and the car thinks the car is fully stopped.
Why try and steer? You''ll be going a bit faster on basically ice. You can't zigzag through streets, bends, walls and cars. Eventually you''ll still crash. Either drive on flat horizontal surfaces with walking speed or just don't drive.
Don't keep your foot on the brake when sliding, even with ABS it is still like a sled. Many of these dents could have been avoided by just having the clutch down and gently steering

I didn't know about the "don't brake so hard" tactic when driving on ice, or the secret of steering gently. I will try these out the next time I'm driving on ice down a steep hill whilst watching youtube videos of cars driving on ice and braking not smoothly enough for driving on ice. Also, because I'm one of those people who simply has to give advice to total strangers because I'm quite an egotist (especially when driving on ice), here's my advice: If you do crash while driving on ice, try not to crash while driving on ice.
I see all the snow sliding and ice sliding is unstoppable but that last semi was just being a jerk, everyone was stopped and he was even on the wrong lane trying to get in front of everyone.
Ikr there is only three things you can do in theses cases brake and if that doesn't work steer the fucking car and try your best to come to a stop or if you can't stop hit a block of snow instead of a car

100% agree lol, awd/4wd makes people stupid. I have studded snow tires on my rwd car and regular snows on my fwd, never any problems on my 100 mile roundtrip commute
Most of the mistake here is people locking up there brake! That will give you no steering, brake a little let up and brake a little again. Try not to lock the wheel from rolling slightly!
Bald tires and a lack of maintaining proper speed and distance between vehicles. I would like to criticize the Russians but Americans are nearly as bad.
+FCFordLord : Thanks, I was unaware of that. Lived in hot countries all my "driving life". The slippery roads we experience are mostly _pea gravel_ unmade roads, and similar techniques of judicious steering and careful braking are used.
You still slide all over the place with winter tyres on and people still drive like it's summer. You just have to get on your hands and knees and put chains on, that's if your fingers are still working or better still, stay in by the fire with a drink.
You still need to pump the brakes if your wheels lock up with ABS. Thats something I rarely hear anyone mention. The abs system thinks the vehicle has stopped which is why it doesn't activate again when you start sliding down a hill, therefore you need to pump the brakes or release the pressure to regain steering control and stopping power.
I live in a small city in northwest Indiana where we get lots of lake effect snow. Our plows and ice melt trucks will spread some product on the roads before the storm to keep the roads from getting so slippery.
So much damage could have been avoided altogether or minimized with proper driving :( When your car is sliding uncontrollably, let go of the brakes and at least try to steer it somewhere you want.
Remember, if you go driving in conditions like these with your all-wheel drive, your winters tires and your winter driving skills, you may not lose control of you car. But someone nearby you might lose control of their car, and now you're entangled in a 7-car pile-up.
True. And you might end up in the ditch even with all those things. When driving around in the winter the vehicles I see most likely stuck or in the ditch are the 4bys with snow tires. Problem is, I was told by a Highway Patrol friend of mine, is the drivers get cocky, while most 2WD drivers are scared out of their goards and slowing way down.
Don't they have winter tires? I have driven on roads covered in ice and at least as steep gradient as in the video, with unstudded winter tires, without ABS and everything went well. I guess that's just how good Nokian tires are. :D No I do not represent Nokian, I just really like their winter tires.
Conditions vary tremendously. Depends on temperature, condition of snow (slush, powder etc.), did it rain before it snowed? Was there thaw and refreeze? Snow and ice aren't always the same. Not close.
Damn this is so dangerous. I dont know why people have to say so many bad things about russians? I say im a very good driver but i know if i was driving on these icy roads id probably be in one of these videos as well.
Florida native, here. I have a couple questions: 1. Is this a common thing that happens constantly during the winter months? 2. Is everyone's car completely torn up and dented, if not completely totaled? lol
No, only in certain conditions. It's usually worse early and late in the season. Reasons are many, but mostly because slushy snow is more slippery, ice often forms under the snow when it rains first, then snows, or snow partially melts and refreezes. Many folks either don't have their snow tires on yet, or have removed them. Believe it or not, over the summer people forget how to drive on snow and ice, even when born and raised in snow country.

Super. 💙 T.E.N.
That last one was the best, what was he thinking 🤔 😂
Don't they have winter tires? I have driven on roads covered in ice and at least as steep gradient as in the video, with unstudded winter tires, without ABS and everything went well. I guess that's just how good Nokian tires are. :D No I do not represent Nokian, I just really like their winter tires.
At least you'll slide slower than with summer tires.
Looks like people on the video had summer tires on..
I drive on exactly same kind of icy and snowy roads every winter but unlike most of these people I use winter tires and no problem
It's going to be a long winter!
Florida native, here. I have a couple questions:
Most of these if not all aren't in United States so it's common everywhere else 😂
Sommerreifen sind doch etwas feines….🤗
