Big 3 Battle: United Airlines vs Delta Airlines vs American Airlines

  • American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines are the three largest airlines in the US. And American and Delta are the two largest airlines globally. How have they risen to this position?
The story of their growth is fascinating. All three have origins in the early decades of flying, and all have played a part in the global expansion of aviation, airports, and aircraft development. There has also been plenty of consolidation alongside the competition, boosting their size and reach.
Along the way, there has been a raft of experimentation, alongside numerous other airlines that have failed. These three are, in many cases, built on the remains of the failed airlines. This video will explore this growth, the collaboration, and the mergers that have brought us to the three airlines as we know them today.

Chemical Bank bought Chase Manhatten, changed their name to Chase, which then bought JP Morgan - oh dear, decisions... The Chemical board still ran the show, but they had never had an "image", so no reverting to that...two great brands, which to choose....Wow, JP Morgan Chase. In conclusion, whatever they choose as a name, we still get landed with the bailout bill when they enevitably, regularly, face a near collapse, same as the damned banks

Delta is so punctual, safe and the service is outstanding. That is what I like most about this airline. American Airlines is classy, safe, good service as well. US Airways, when I flew with it, it was punctual, the service good quality as well and well I lived in Charlotte NC, and it is the major airline there. The designs are beautiful of the three. Although there was a quick logo design for Delta before the actual one. I remember the tail had like a flag waving kind of design on the tail. Thought it was pretty.

I find Delta very interesting in their choices, especially in the last 3-5 years, seeing them give up on various cities they had such a long tenure using as their focus cities, allowing the budget carriers to take the cities over quickly as they leave. It's sometimes puzzling, like here, they gave up on PDX being a focus airport for them, even though they had consistently remained right at the very top in tickets sold, passengers carried and people talking of them and liking their services here alongside Alaska Airlines. But I believe in 2017 it was when they officially announced they'd be ridding Portland as a focus city, and rid most of their routes here, too. Southwest almost instantly came in and took over most of their routes.

Of course if you are flying Int'l you will have to fly other carries. I wish we had a Qantas America! Qantas is my favorite carrier for Australia and NZ. Braniff was awesome. The big three you are talking about are, in my opinion, way too big!! Smaller companies are in order so they can give better service as opposed to what they have become. My two cents..J

I'm most familiar with United and their merger with Continental. I lived relatively close to Newark and usually flew Continental on family vacations. My dad also traveled extensively for work and flew them a lot. My grandfather was actually a pilot for United a long time ago, though no one in my family ever flew the pre-merger United during my lifetime. In my opinion, the merger did not go as smoothly as it could have. I remember one trip during the merger where our flight got cancelled out of nowhere at the last minute, and we had to drive to another airport to get home. The airlines essentially operated separately for several years after they received the single operating certificate. These issues were followed by several highly publicized customer service incidents, and really gave the airline a bad reputation. I think they are improving things now by focusing more on customer service and refurbishing all their aircraft cabins, including reintroducing seatback IFE.

Very interesting observation. Continental had a stellar reputation, but after the merger with United, that got trashed. 1) US Airways acquired American Airlines; they just kept the AA branding since it made sense for them
    2) United Airlines today is not actually United; while the merger (which is still happening at the grounds-level!) was mostly equal, it’s easier to say that Continental was the major shareholder (both branding and livery as well as top corporate heads came from CO), but keeping the name “United”.
