- Paving the way for long-distance, high-volume air travel, the “Queen of the Skies” (as it’s been crowned), became the flagship aircraft for full-service carriers around the world, from most of the major airlines in the United States and Europe, to carriers in the Middle East, East Asia, and Australia.
But becoming the largest passenger aircraft in the skies doesn’t happen overnight.
How did the Boeing 747 concept come to be? And why is it becoming an increasingly rare sight in the skies today?

I have one of the last flights of British Airways 747 to JFK
It's more of a transition from an airliner to a cargo plane.
Sidenote: Boeing 747s are also used as firefighting planes against forest fires.
sadly not with covid it is park down for too long and it is old and then comes the problems with when they start to fly and it gives problem we do not want them breaking apart in the sky now would we it is sad but she has to retire . Covid killed/ crippled alot of planes and airlines imagine an airline operating in the caribbean for 46 years had to shut their doors forever it is sad

The 747 has outlasted every competitor aircraft that dared to intrude on her throne. The DC-10, L-1011, MD-11, A340, and A380 all had shorter operational lifespans and sold less units than the 747. In fact, the Queen outsold all of them combined.

@@williamhuang8309 The 737 isn't a competitor of the 747. Those planes he listed are big, high capacity planes. The 737 is much smaller. ANd those planes are all by competing manufacturers. The 737 is also a Boeing product.
I can honestly say that I’ve flown on the 747 since 1980 with TWA (3 times), Pan Am (once), British Airways (once) and Virgin Atlantic 10 times, twice on the 100 model and the rest on 400’s. Solid aircraft and will be sadly missed.
No, boeing 747 is not on fall because it has been in the sky for over 50 years and still being on the sky for many years to come as a cargo aircraft

Well in the cargo market, sure, but in the passenger market, sadly, absolutely no one wants these jumbos anymore. The only reason airlines are keeping them around is to avoid having to pay for new planes to replace them atm, or to make the most of their investment. Also, being in the sky for over 50 years doesn't having anything to do with the fall of the 747. It'd be wrong to say it wasn't successful, but it would also be wrong to say it wasn't falling. Again, they may have many years left for cargo ops, but one day, they will also meet their unfortunate end too.

It faded away with time and technology. Same as every other great plane. I too would say that it isn't fair to say it fell.

In November of 1995, I flew from LA to London on a British Airways 747. My company paid for me to fly business class, a $5,000 ticket at the time, so I was on the upper deck. In addition to amazing food service and other perks, we had the run of the galley - liquor and all - between meals. It was amazing. This was the only time I ever rode on one of these. Back in 1969, on a road trip to Washington state with my parents, we saw a 747 doing touch and go landings somewhere along the way. These giants were very much in the news at the time, and to see one right before they entered service was a real treat for a kid like me, who has been building model airplanes since an early age. Great video!

Just like the 747-8. You guys need to understand no one wants those things no more. The 747-8 (the a380s competition) legit showed you no one cared. Let's just say the 747 lived long. But just like everything it must fall and die.
The A380 was not a failure, a lot of commentators just don't understand the A380 philosophy, airline route matrixes and development and the effect the rapid growth and investment in Grid and Airport infrastructure in the Asian region has had not just on the A380 but future aircraft development and utilisation...
My first ever flight was on an Aerlingus 747 and the age of 7 on a field trip with the Boy Scouts DUB - SNN it was an incredible experience. I'll never forget the sheer power of it. Strangely despite all the flying I've done through the years i've only been on a 747 twice. The second was a BA 747-400 SFO - LHR flying on that I also had the option of taking an A380 but elected for the 747. It felt it's age but looking back I'm glad I went with her.
That's a beautiful experience there! I actually flew only once on the 747. It was a Cathay 747-400 when I was about 2.5 years old. But I loved aircraft even then; I have no idea, they looked quite interesting and the whole concept of flight was magic to me. I was able to go onto the flight deck and peek into it. From then on, and even today, it's one of my only long-lasting loves.
I was on NAIA Terminal 3 when i started flying overseas, then i saw the 747 for the first time. It was in Delta colors. I will never forget that.
The Boeing 747 is not only an aircraft. It's a legend and a pop culture. Even people who are not aviation lover can recognize it.

I was ten when I first flew on a 747, both Cathay Pacific, a 747-200 and 747-400. Children like myself were still allowed to visit the cockpit, and I remember noting how quiet and darker the upper passenger deck was (it was a flight across the Pacific), but I was even more fascinated by the cockpit itself, all the switches, handles, toggles, levers, displays, you name it. I also noticed how the -200 had a three-person flight deck, while the -400 only had the more-common-to-me two-person flight deck. I recall asking the flight crew a lot of questions, and was often one of the last to leave. Ah, the innocence of youth. :)
The first time I flew in a 747 was with Garuda from Amsterdam to Jakarta in 1996. I was shown the cockpit and the flight engineer picked me up so I could look out of the front window. I also remember that you could still smoke inside in the last 10 rows or so. Something my father really appreciated at the time.

I cried when they got retired🤧its always been my dream to be a pilot and fly this and I'm sad I never will get to fly it.it's like my entire dream of being a pilot got thrown out the window and im still the kid who fell in love with a plane🌹
I sadly will probably never get to fly in a 747. Makes me sad but it will always last in my mind as one the leading for the front of the advancements made in aviation.
No worries Max. They looked better from the outside them to actually fly with them. 747s are very loud compared to modern aircraft like the 787 and A350. The airflow inside was also quite bad as well
I have a solution for you, costly but fool proof...you can fly on the 747 in future if you become a Commercial Pilot and Type rate on the 747, that way, you are guaranteed of your dreams 😁😁. Best wishes in your endeavours @Max Dirks

Max Dirks, if you really want you can still fly on a 747. The latest variant, the 747-8i is still flying with Lufthansa, Korean Air and Air China. Since they were delivered to these airlines not too long ago, they will most likely fly these for at least a decade to come, possibly a bit longer. So if you travel to a destination where one of these airlines fly (in the next 8 to 10 years or so), you will most definitely still get a chance! I believe they are temporarily not using them now because of the pandemic. But once this is all over, they have said they will continue to fly them on some of their routes!

I took countless flights as an infant with parents on the 747 in the late 70's between UK and Australia and South America. In the 80's as a kid I regularly took BA 747 services to East Africa. They were always the best, huge miracles that inspired confidence.
I was lucky to fly on a BA 747 for the last time two years ago, return to Las Vegas to get hitched. So glad we did, in all senses. I'll miss the old bird.
Apart from the Concorde, she's the most recognisable and loved passenger aircraft in history...... I absolutely adore the 747.

I am lucky to have flown on a B-747 - 400 and - 8i many times! It was more interesting than an a380. I think the B-747-8i is the most beautiful airplane ever. It has all the gorgeous design elements put together. The long hump looks better than a full deck. The nacelle, chevrons, and the sleek new wings looks great! I love this video! Thanks!

Yes the Boeing 747 holds a special place in my heart as my husband and myself undertook our first international flight in June 1987
from Mumbai to Hong Kong. Remember every detail including the superb breakfast served up by British Airways. 👍🏻
My fondest memory of a 747 was on my way to the Virgin Islands. We flew to Paris, shuffled across town in a bus, waited 12 hours for a flight that was claimed to be on time, but turned out to have been 12 hours late for six months straight, crossed the Atlantic in the oldest, most cramped cattle car of a 747 i've ever flown and ended up losing a day sailing because of course we missed our puddle jumper to Tortola. On the way back, it was of course also 12 hours delayed and we spent hours in CDG with someone leaving a microphone turned on and making screeching audio feedback from the PA system.

My last flight ✈️ in the Queen 👑 was with my great-grandfather from O'Hare to SFO & back! We were on a T W A airliner both ways!😳
People born in 70s and 80s love this aircraft as much as they do their childhood toys, friends and memories. Thats' it, thats the definition of 747.
KLM flew the 747-400 between AMS and LAX for decades. I am from the Netherlands, but live in the Los Angeles area.... as such, I have flown the 747-400 several times on trips between LAX and AMS, the last time was September 2019, about 6 months before KLM announced their full retirement. They were already slated to be retired by 2022, but the Covid-19 pandemic just hastened its demise. I would make it a point to find flights with the 747, because KLM's Economy Plus at the front of the plane had 2-seater rows, and that was always ideal for me and my wife.
I have flown other types of aircraft on pleasure and business, but I will always have fond memories of the KLM 747-400s.
Best memories: LH GIG-FRA, the emptiest flight I've ever flown. Was in economy class, but managed to lay across three seats and it was awesome!
The return, in a 744 as well, was the worst flight. Crowded with a completely rude person on the seat by my side. One of the worst 12h of my life.
when i went to Japan in 2017 I went on a Qantas 747 and it was beautiful i still remember coming into land and seeing the engines of the 747,it absorbs or lessens the effects of turbulence much better because i fell asleep on the way back and when I woke up my mum said there was big turbulence but it didn't wake me up compared to the next time i went on a smaller aircraft to Japan it did wake me up. Generally, I just felt a lot safer on a 747 than I did on any other plane because of the size of it. So thank you to Boeing and the 747 you have given me memories I will never forget
Had the pleasure of flying in all Virgin Atlantic 747 series, from both Manchester and Gatwick to Orlando every year since 2000. Starting in Economy, moving up to Premium Economy, a few years later as children became older. Finally Upper Class for our anniversary November 2019, incidentally last flight before covid. Compared to Continental DC10 such a joy, the space, the sheer granture, complemented by wonderful staff. One trip on 787 Dreamliner. Will always have fond memories of each trip. Best wishes. It's inevitable. Engine technology has advanced so much that there is no longer any appreciable market for four engine designs.

I still remember my first trip on a B747 going from Riyadh to Beirut. It was spacious, it was fast and I remember the smooth touchdown in Beirut Airport. And as a kid I remember the little toys they used to give us. But most importantly I remember that my whole family was seated next to each other in the center row which was new for me and very special. I will always have fond memories of the 747 and always hope to hop on another flight once Covid19 is over.

My parents always tell the story when they once flew to America. They took off in Vienna with an Austrian Airlines 737. Then they went on from Amsterdam with a KLM 747. They just loved how smootly the 747 took to the sky. Since the 737 started like a rocket and gave them a bumpy ride. The 747 was so comfortable to fly with.

My 1st long haul & widebody flight was a 747-400 of ANA, flying from JFK to Tokyo Narita. Flying up over the Attic Circle on such an iconic aircraft was an experience I won't soon forget. The Queen of the Skies will DEF be missed. ✈
Air India Boeing-747 was the first ever flight I sat in, from Bangalore to Mumbai in June 2000. It was a night flight, flying on the route Mumbai - London - New York. I was excited as I have always loved and adored 747. The plane was as huge from inside, as it was from outside. I got informed that the total capacity was 425 (or perhaps 525), and that the upper deck had 42 seats. I climbed on the upper deck and liked the configuration of the plane.
I simply love the shape of Boeing 747. I would love if Boeing comes back with its iconic hump in some twin-engine aircraft in the future.

Very bizarre to see 747SP decked out in the latest Lufthansa and British Airways liveries given the fact that neither ever had 747SP in their fleets. My fondest memories were my first ever flight, flying from Frankfurt to Chicago in 1973 when I was seven with Lufthansa 747-200B. Another one was the 1987 flight from Australia to Los Angeles with Qantas 747-300: one of the stewardesses took fancy of me and gave me the tour of the plane, including the short lift to the kitchen gallery below. It was only time I've ridden a lift in the plane. My recent 747 flight was Lufthansa 747-8I from Rio de Janeiro to Frankfurt. What a huge difference between 747-8i and 747-400!
The only time I ever flew in the upper floor of an airplane was on Malaysia Airlines business class between LAX and KUL round-trip with stops at TPE. It was an amazing experience; the seats were luxurious and service was top notch
Unfortunately, I am too young to be an av-geek in the era when 747s were ubiquitous operating passenger services, so I don't have the same emotional attachment to her Majesty as others do. However, I can remember my first 747 flight as an aviation lover, Thai Airways B747-400 HS-TGO, operating a short 2-hour flight as TG410 from Singapore to Bangkok, in Dec 2017. Thai was operating a limited-time 747 service to Singapore and when my family decided to take a holiday to Thailand, I just had to get myself on the Jumbo, even if it meant we would reach our Bangkok hotel at 12.30am..... I remember the unique layout of the galleys just behind the upper deck staircase, it ran lengthways along the centre of the cabin, with business class seats on the other side. Then, while everyone was asleep, I was lucky enough to get a tour of the upper deck by a lovely stewardess and to top it all off, we disembarked via a remote stand in Bangkok. I could have stood on the stairway for 15mins just snapping photos of the fuselage and wings together, so that's my most memorable 747 flight. I have been on Singapore Airlines' 747 a few times as a kid, but I have no recollection except they were called "Megatops".

While it is fading away, let’s not forget that all its competitors, the L-1011, A340, A380, DC-10, & MD-11 are all out of production and are no longer flying or swiftly being retired. The 747 is still flying, although production is scheduled to end. And the 747 is kind of a victim of Boeing’s own success with the 777 and 787. They are so efficient and can access most airports. I will miss her. I hope to fly on one before they are completely retired from passenger use. Over 50 years of production is a good run for any aircraft. She has certainly made her mark on the world. Even if you aren’t an aviation enthusiast, you know what a 747 is. She’s probably the most significant aircraft ever made, except for maybe the Comet or Concorde. She will always be The Queen Of The Skies.

The 747 is the pride of the USA in the sky . I remember when she met the first A380 in Zurich . The A380 was quiet a bit larger ,but to me the 747 was more elegant , beautiful . And she is all American . But Boeing will come through and give us the next generation aircraft ,that we all can be just as proud of . American ingenuity will never go away . I think SQ B747 retired 1 or 2 years before i was born but i was lucky enough to see a B747 for Cathay Pacific land at changi.

Flying on my own for the first time, at the age of 16, New York to London, and having empty seats so sleeping across the seats… never forget the takeoff, I’ve flown 200-300 times pretty much all the models - 777, 787, a380, a340, a350, aswell as most of the smaller ones for domestic flights but the 747 has an extra special feeling about it and the torque when you take off is unbeatable. Pushes you way back into your seat!
Most successful passenger liner of the past 50 years, and will never be equalled by any other. Majestic !!!
The rise and the fall title doesn't do justice to the legacy of the 7474. I would put the title as the 747 jumbo, making of a legend.

They were nice but inefficient. Even the 748. FedEx doesn't even have a 747 which means they know what's going on. FedEx really tells you how the cargo sector should operate.

I nearly teared up when I saw Philippine Airlines' 747 in the video. Glad to have flown on our flag carrier's 747 a few times before its retirement.
I've been to Europe at least 6 times in my (so far) short life. I am pretty certain most of those times were on a 747. The last time I remember flying on a 747 was a trip from D.C. to Frankfurt on a Lufthansa 747-400 going there and a 747-8i coming home, back in 2016. The last time I went to Europe was in 2018, and I flew on a United Airlines 777-200.
What about turning the 747 to a twin jet? I know it may sound very painful but at least we can still see the 747 in the skies for decades to come.
I don't think there are engines powerful enough to let the 747 take off or land at any reasonable airport, or fly at all for that matter. Good suggestion though
When it comes to the 737max and the 787 production problems many Boeing fanatics accuse others that they are "Boeing haters" and "Airbus lovers." What many of them forget is that most who don't agree with Boeing on their 737max handling, really like the 747.
Everyone who likes aviation likes the 747 whether it's an arrogant over patriotic European or not.

I wouldn't even be surprised if many of the 737max victim-families think that Airbus is something made in China.

Upon entering 747 JAL on my flight from Frankfurt to Tokyo I went all the way towards the back searching for my economy class seat before finding out that the entire lower deck was allocated to the first and business classes. Amazingly a little parcel of economy seats was tacked onto the upper deck in 3+3 layout.
My favourite 747 memory was probably the first time I ever took one during my vacation to the Netherlands. And my last 747 flight will likely be the flight I take when I next fly to Germany (if Lufthansa doesn't retire them first)
Stepping into a 747 is unique. You feel it is not an airplane but a spaceship! Designed in the same era, it is the next best thing to board Apollo 11.

But maybe they'll make a deal with you. Tell them that you will find your own way there and home and pay your own expenses, they may let you sit in the cockpit jump seat for a few day long pickup/delivery route! That would be pretty neat! And it will NOT ever happen...but a man can dream right?🤓✈

I was driving through Manchester and noticed a 757 in the distance.. That same distinctive silhouette I used to see as a kid some 20 years ago.. Crazy that, yet the 747 is almost a thing of the past :(.
My first flight of my life was on a 747-400.
I flew 11 from Manila in the Philippines to Hawaii I was 21 at the time and was astonished at how big the jet was and how fast it got up to speed on takeoff. It was a very smooth flight. I've always loved the jet and it is surprising to me how bowling thought that such a great passenger jet would be taking over almost completely by their own SST that the government pulled the plug on and predictably so with the amount of fuel it takes to why approximately a third of the passengers of a 747 in an supersonic jet. We probably shouldn't be surprised at the demise of the Big 4 engine Jets, it's simple economic business four-engine Jets are much thirstier and more expensive by twice to maintain t h a n twin Jets. It's probably very similar to everybody ditching their big V8 cars in the 74 and 75 energy crisis and going to 4 cylinders. The queen had over 50 years of incredible service and flying around the world. 50 years isn't incredible service life of any jet. So few of them have even got anywhere close to Lasting 50 years. I will miss the 747

I’ve been lucky enough to fly on the 747-200, 747-400 and one of my all time aviation highlights, the 747SP. It will be incredibly sad to see this plane leave passenger service as it was already a legend by the time I was born. But all good things must come to an end…and the l-1011, a340 and 747 are 3 *very* good things.
first time I flew on one of these was in 93 when I was a kid. It was a Singapore airlines flight from Singapore to Dallas with a stop over in Tokyo Narita. Last time I flew on this was on a business trip from Jakarta to Bali with Garuda Indonesia (2 hour flight!). kinda sad that airliners are retiring this iconic aircraft

Flew from Miami to London on BA 747 in the early 80's. Got upgraded to the bubble section, something that stuck out to me the cockpit door was open sometimes during the flight. Never will see that again!!!
