    • @asystole_
      @asystole_ 3 роки тому +1

      Quiet!? Compared to older turboprops maybe, but it's still far louder than a jet. Never particularly liked flying on the Q400. It's particularly unpleasant if you're in one of the seat rows near the engines (8-12ish?) not only because of the noise but because of how the high wing and engine pods block your view.

    As a ramp agent, I love the embraer 175. Low enough you can close cargo nets standing on the ground, door for the bin is in the middle of the bin making stacking easier, and it has a vent inside the bin that blasts air in to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. CRJ aircraft require a special handrail that we have 1 of but we don't get those at my airport. They say the 737 is low to make ground servicing easier but it doesn't do that. You can't close the bin doors from outside without a very tall guy or a belt loader, you can't close the nets without a belt loader, and being low gets in the way of walking underneath. Long live embraer!

      My favorite is the BAe 146. It looks like something out of a cartoon because of the ridiculous size of its engines compared to the fuselage. I love the seats of the E-Jets. They are so comfy to sit it. The downside is a snowy A/C. E-Jets tend to let some ice crystals fall out of their vent slots. At least the ones I flew with.
    CRJs are a little less comfy to sit it but still ahead from A320s and B737s. The A220 is a very modern approach. Quieter in comparison to the older jets but not as comfy as CRJs and E-Jets. I haven't been on an E2-Jet and most likely want to fly in one of them.

Air Canada did buy Embraer's in the past but has chosen not to replace them with E2-!95's, even though the E2 is supposedly quieter and less fuel burn & in price, it's range is not the same as the A220.

    Favourites are the ATR and E175/195, the Embraer is a wonderful plane, smooth and in the right hands can be landed to perfection (*Italian Chef Kiss"), only annoyance is how damn loud the APU is! The ATR is (IMO) a better plane than the Dash 8, as it's simpler (doesn't have/need an APU, engines can start off batteries if needed and do not need bleed air, mechanical flight controls etc ) and more economical on shorter routes. It also has both Bulk Loading and ULD freight variants. However its lower crosswind limits due to the gear position do make it a little less suited to rough environments, it needs to be parked facing into wind (due to the flight controls and potential damage), and it's more liable to tip during boarding due to the rear door.

    For flying with the major US regionals the Embraer E-Jet series is always my preferred ride. The ability of their jets to use standard airport gates rather than the 'commuter terminal gates' at many major US airports makes plane changes and connections much easier and much more timely. It's a great little plane, but range is an issue for long and thin, which is where A220 is cleaning up. However, I'd argue there is a big space out there for a new 50-seater which nobody seems to want to clean-sheet. So I guess we'll see the little E-135 and CRJ's for a long time to come!

    Thank you very much for this very informative overview of the Regional-Jet-Market. I´m missing Saab - which isn´t of course an aircraft producer anymore, but was an important aircraft producer: the Saab 340 and the Saab 2000 are still in operation in many countries.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 2 роки тому +1

      True. I heard the 2000 was so sophisticated that it could take off even if one prop failed in midflight! I've seen a demonstration video from Saab. My jaw hit the floor. The pilot clearly shut off one engine and it still took off.

    • @NicolaW72
      @NicolaW72 2 роки тому

      @@largol33t1 The Saab 2000 has the reputation to be the most advanced Turboprob ever built. Unfortunately only a few numbers were sold, it was an economic failure which caused Saab from leaving the sphere of aircraft producers. The reasons for that are difficult to describe, mostly it is stated that the Saab 2000 was too expensive and advanced for most of the traditional Turboprob operating airlines while the other airlines choosed to buy regional jets instead of a turboprob.
      So the much more traditional Saab 340 in its both versions A and B was in opposite to the Saab 2000 and also the ATR 42 and 72 as much as the Dash 8 were huge economic successes, all of them much more traditional turboprobs.
      So it´s unfortunately also a story that the best and most modern technology doesn´t make always the race at the customers.

  • @USNveteran
    @USNveteran 3 роки тому +1

    Regional aircraft are cheaper because in general most operators of them do not pay their staff the same pay scale but much less than main line carriers. Turbo props are also so fuel efficient they save quite a bit on that expense.

    If you’re wondering why suddenly sold all of their aviation programs, Dash 8, CRJ, CS/A220; its because they had been receiving bailout loans from Canadian federal and provincial governments. Being from Quebec, running an honest business and actually turning a profit is a completely foreign concept to them. So instead of repaying loans they couldn’t afford because they were still losing money, they just pawned the problem and programs off on other companies, and pocketed the difference.

    Kind of melancholy how Bombardier basically sold off all the different production lines, but at least that way the CJet was saved by the Airbus deal; really that came out of Boeing trying to muscle Bombardier off the market for things >100pax, and now instead of having the competition bear the label of neighbor Canada, it has the label of Airbus. In that seme vein, well, good thing that Embraer gets to stand on its own for now.

Wish Embraer more E2 orders coming out of the pandemic and finding the E3 collaborator! Using E2’s state-of-the-art fuselage/cockpit/avionics to pair with a modern turboprop engine, >15% fuel saving will bring Embraer back to its roots, the turboprop market! ATR might need to counter with a clean-sheet design. If ATR respond by simply putting the new engine onto the 30year old frames, Embraer is going to eat ATR’s dominance via E3!

On the other hand, flying out of Orange County or a similar airport on an A318 has to be experienced at least once. The pilot lines up on the runway and backs the plane as far as ATC will allow. The crew hold the brakes and FLOOR it. The damn thing took off so easily it was terrifying. I didn't think it would handle like a scalded cat! Only the second time in my whole life I've been so scared that I was clutching the armrests for dear life!

  • @jfmezei
    @jfmezei 3 роки тому +1

    DASH-8-400 was originally set at 72 passenger capacity. Its's newer engines made it more fuel efficient than the -300. The increase to 90 passengers was done recently by De Havilland Canada as a means to market the aircraft with lower seat miles. The 72 passenger capacity forced airlines to provide good seat pitch against their will which made the -400 a really nice aircraft to fly.
    The death of FlyBe has released a whole lot of them to second hand market, so I pray for new De Havilland Canada to still succeed.
    You need to speak of the CRJ in the past. Production was halted before sale to Mitsubishi who did not purchase the production capacity, only the IP and maintenance contracts. Airbus is buying the hangars at Mirabel to increase the A220 production. CRJ200 last produced in 2006 and the production halls at Dorval/St-Laurent have been used for the Challenger (since fuselage share commonality).
    BTW, the CRJ was actually designed in the Mid 70s by Canadair (hence Canadair Regional jet). It designed the Challenger "wide body" business jet to be wide enough to have 2*2 seating and structures able to be stretched. However, the launche of the Challenger drained its resources and the government fo Canada sold Canadir it to Bombardier in 1986 and Bombardeir then saw the potential in completing the stretch of the Challenger into the CRJ. The CRJ inherited the same CF34 engines as the Challenger with updates to engines as they became availabvle (and uprated ones for the -700 and -900).
    The big unanswered question is what happens to all the routes stll served by CRJ-200s. Sales of the CRJ-200 didn't go to the Dash-8 or ATR planes, they weren to larger jets. Even Bombardier saw the writing on wall and prety much abandonned the Dash-8 while it held on to it, and pushed the larger C-Series, and even during its developpement, went from 100 to 130 seats.
    So I am quite curious to see if airlines will serve markets with less than 100 capacity planes and with what.

    The term "regional jet" actually covers two classes of aircraft.
    The first is an inter-regional jet, typified by the E Series and A220, designed to fly between larger airports with ground handling facilities but lacking the passenger load to justify a mainline jet. These aircraft often use airway bridges or ground supplied stairs.
    The second type is a commuter jet, such as the ERJ and CRJ, that were designed for smaller airports requiring more autonomous operations. These aircraft can operate to gravel and dirt strips and often have integrated airstairs, rear-mounted engines (ERJ and CRJ) or podded engines under a high wing (Avro RJ and AN148/AN158) to reduce foreign object damage.
    There is a market for both types particularly outside the USA and Europe but it appears that the communities that rely on commuter jets will be abandoned.
