Footage Released of Moment Truck Plunges Off Clark Memorial Bridge in Louisville | 10 News First

- Terrifying dashcam vision of a crash, which left a semi-truck precariously dangling from the edge of a Louisville bridge has been released.
On March 1, the 26-year-old driver, Sydney Thomas, was airlifted to safety after nearly plunging into the Ohio River when attempting to avoid a vehicle swerving into her lane.
The footage was shown in a U.S court this week. The driver of the swerving car, 33-year-old Jeffersonville man Trevor Branham, has been charged with wanton endangerment and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended licence.

She kept her foot on the break and pedals the whole time after it happened and didn’t let go until she was being rescued. I’m so glad both her and the firefighter who rescued her were okay! It could’ve been a much worse accident considering she lost all power steering after the initial impact
No
Why are people saying it’s her fault when it’s clearly the car CROSSING THE YELLOW LINE that hit her
They think she was steering after the hit when they have no idea the actual facts of what happened. When she got hit, it took out her steering ability so she couldn't turn either way. They think it's her fault for not steering. Low wit people will believe an entire story based on 5 seconds of no context.

So glad she wasn't injured. That must have been terrifying.
For those saying that she could've just turned: look at the cam inside the truck. She did try turning right but her direction was probably broken from the hit, or the company was using discontinued trucks. She prob also tried using the brakes but they take too long, same for the handbrake. She did the right thing, but now the mystery is if the company let her drive a discontinued truck or not
CMVs dont have hand brakes and it would be ineffective to use the aprking brake here, all thatd do is lock your wheels up. ABS helps tremendously but i assume the steering linkage was broken from the impact leading to the inability to steer

Looks like the car hit the trucks tire which caused it to go at a wrong angle. If not it’s probably a jack knife
The engineers behind that trailer, hitch, and truck are proud about now. They stayed together.

It also helped that the ledge was there
What is used to hold the cab and trailer together?
@@PM-vb4od The piece that attached the two is called the kingpin. It's a pin that is just 2 inches in diameter (sometimes 3½") and it's responsible for keeping the trailer attached to the truck. Something similar happened on I-84 in southernIdaho a few years back. A pickup pulling a travel trailer went over the side of a bridge at the WORST possible place, spanning the deep Malad Gorge. The pickup went over the side and was kept hanging by its connection to the trailer which remained on the roadway. It was horribly touch and go for rescuers, knowing that the ball hitch was the ONLY thing preventing that truck from falling to the bottom of the chasm. But both husband and wife were successfully rescued. Just goes to show how tough those trailer hitches are! Sadly, the pickup and the trailer were their ONLY possessions.
For the people who think she could've avoided this. Notice how the steering is turned all the way to the right, and the truck kept going to the left. Her steering was taken out when the truck got hit.

@@haydendonley2440 You mistook the comment. She's talking about side of the lane not side of the road. The outer lane is usually for those passing other vehicles.
I like how she immediately stopped mid scream and held her breath when she saw exactly where she was. She saved herself really. Eventually, they came to help.
She did not save herself. She tried corrective steering instead of braking
@@conorsmith636 She's braking and trying to correctively steer. You can't just slam the brakes on these huge trucks, the inertia forces them forward. Also, none of that matters because the truck impact took out her steering, you can see her try to steer and it does NOTHING because it was already damaged in the impact.

To the people who said it's her fault, they are road violators who think they own the road.
And it's probably the same people who think it's her fault
Who's saying it's her fault? Literally no one is.
@@ilovesephThere’s people in other people’s threads on this video saying it’s her fault and that she hit the guard rails and that’s why she fell off. Majority of these people don’t seem to grasp basic driving skills or if they have a driver’s license, they need to get it revoked. They’re a danger to the public.
Seeing how she’s on the right side, she’s from the US. So that being said, in the first couple of seconds of the video, it shows she was struck by an on coming car attempting to illegally overtake the car in front of them. This lead that idiot car to crash into this lady’s semi truck.
With the force of impact, it only makes sense that the sense of direction and the position of her vehicle has been pushed into an uncontrollable direction. Hence why she tried to correct the vehicle, but was unable to due to the impact. This led to her vehicle’s hood falling off the bridge.
“Some” people in the comments are blaming her for crashing into the rails and going off the bridge. These are the same people who get into car crashes and blame the other side when they themselves are the main purpose of the crash.
These people need to get their driver’s license revoked and their cars repossessed.

It sounded and looked like she was hit directly by the car coming fast at her. That car tried to avoid a car in its lane, sitting or slow?
@@lindafolk4598Yeah. Idk why they were going so fast anyway. There’s 2-3 cars parked on the side just before they encounter the next car that was parked there. They had to swerve to avoid it, but they already should’ve seen it coming up. Unless the parked car didn’t have their hazard lights on. Glad the driver was caught & charged, at least. It looks like the front axle was damaged so the truck turned left
Some people don't know how a reflection in a mirror works
@@gradovvladimir4315 Yup, nothing she could do, unfortunetly.
Nothing she can do, simply physics.
Getting hit on her left turns her to the left, steering is most likely broken and there`s a trailer behind her that wants to move forward due to inertia.
She was the passenger there and had an angel watching her sending a hero to get her out.
Yeah I think you're spot on about the steering being broken: you can see she turns the wheel several turns after she was done getting tossed around by the impact, but the truck didn't respond at all, just kept going the same direction.
Absolutely! I said she had her gaurdian angel out there holding onto that truck!!
I agree. I don't know if anyone had noticed this, but the moment she realise she going left, she turns as hard right as she could.

@100lagugages you do realize trucks of that size don't break like regular cars right?

She was left dangling for an hour before they could rescue her.
I was there and that is true.
Scary. Glad she's okay
AN HOUR?!?
This is relatively fast
What were they doing? Meeting?
She turned clockwise, the correct direction, the truck didn't respond because of physics (it's called understeer in car lingo). Why are there THREE vehicles stopped on that bridge??
I have a strong feeling that the steering linkage broke up in the collision which caused no steering response and the collision was in a way where the left front wheel would be yanked forcefully into an unaligned position which lead to the trucker going off the bridge.
That's mean the brake also malfunction?
@ButohLo semis don't stop on a dime, especially if she was a heavy load. They need about 600ft to stop fully at avarage speed.

This was purely an accident. There has been a previous accident or car stall that created a driving hazzard for the car behind a larger vehicle that was able to avoid disabled car.
There were 2 lanes, the car car was stalled on the far right. There was was no reason for that car to swerve in front of the trailer. Also if you need to swerve to go around a car parked on the road, you wait till there’s no oncoming traffic before you go.
