@@PM-vb4od The piece that attached the two is called the kingpin. It's a pin that is just 2 inches in diameter (sometimes 3½") and it's responsible for keeping the trailer attached to the truck. It has a mushroom head on it to keep the trailer from being able to just lift off the pin. While I'm sure they can, I've never heard of one breaking.

M a trucker that's the general assumption of the public including the law enforcement that arrives on the scene whenever a semi is involved in an accident ... that's why it's very very very important to carry a dash cam in our profession...some folks even do it deliberately looking for a quick pay day without regards of their lives or if they gonna survive to get the check cause our minimum insurance coverage is now 5 million.

Maybe the hatchback broke down, maybe they made a mistake that, maybe the pickup made a mistake that caused him to rear end. The hatchback was lucky that it didn't get dragged by the semi and fell into the river.

CMVs dont have hand brakes and it would be ineffective to use the aprking brake here, all thatd do is lock your wheels up. ABS helps tremendously but i assume the steering linkage was broken from the impact leading to the inability to steer

The fault is the person who’s at a dead stop on a bridge in the far left lane (the passenger truck crossed into the POV drivers lane bc they were avoiding that car) the literal only reason to stop on a bridge is if your car will not move and even then you better start pushing

They were also parked too far back for it to have been traffic from the parked vehicle ahead of the pickup. Pickup driver is just incompetent.

NOT HER FAULT 1-black truck goes into wrong lane and hit her 2-upon the impact, truck starts to roll left 3-probably due impact and damage to the lower arm control/wheel/rackpinion. 4-You see the truck driver turn the steering wheel to the right to go back into her lane , but due to the damage steering is unresponsive and truck continues to roll to the left and nearly falls.

And guess what happens when you turn your steering wheel clockwise: You turn right. And what happened in the video? The truck went left, even though she tried to turn right. Conclusion: None of this was her fault.

She was literally being suspended above the river by a 2.5 inch piece of steel where the fifth wheel attaches to the trailer and latches onto the pin. The tractor weighs around 5 or 6 tons which could've easily detached from the trailer pin and plummeted into the river below. She had an angel protecting her that day.
Fortunately this trucking company hauls food like frozen meals and not anything very heavy. If she was hauling anything heavier it probably would have given way. But she got very lucky with the bridges welding and the massive beam that held the trailer down.
You can even see her turning the steering wheel to the RIGHT but it just kept going LEFT. She really was completely helpless. The fact she was driving a semi with a trailer is prolly the only reason she survived.

Coast guard shouldn’t receive praise for going into dangerous waters saving sailors from falling overboard or a sinking ship, it’s just their job. Firefighters shouldn’t be praised when they put themselves in danger trying to save someone like in this scenario because it’s just their job. I have a strong feeling that the steering linkage broke up in the collision which caused no steering response and the collision was in a way where the left front wheel would be yanked forcefully into an unaligned position which lead to the trucker going off the bridge.

She MAY have been aiming for the steel support, but she turns into the edge. She gives the steering wheel a full revolution (hand over hand to be exact). Had she simply held the steering wheel in place, it looks like she would have simply drifted into the oncoming lane.

If there are it's because of forced perspective, the camera makes it seem she steered left when she did not. She steered right but I can tell you an impact like that to a lorry your steering is definitely gone regardless
People do not realize that once you lose a steer tire there is nothing you can do. She turned the wheel back the opposite direction and still went over. Even in a small vehicle once you lose the front the vehicle will do whatever without any permission

I was looking at that too, I get it was a pretty significant crash but losing steering in an 18 wheeler seems like a really big deal, even after a crash. Sounds like a bad design or maybe just an unfortunately placed pickup truck. Hope that person is alright.

Edit: There are also so many of you that don't know your left from your right. She steered right to stay on the road. The police report put full fault on the pickup, who was also driving on a suspended license and weaving through traffic. The collision took out her steering so there was NOTHING she could have done.

3-probably due impact and damage to the lower arm control/wheel/rackpinion.
4-You see the truck driver turn the steering wheel to the right to go back into her lane , but due to the damage steering is unresponsive and truck continues to roll to the left and nearly falls.

The passenger vehicle crossed into the truckers lane. She stayed way calmer than I would have. She wasn’t hysterical nor did she over-steer. She had as much control as possible

If you still can't see it, here's an explanation: She's turning the steering wheel clockwise. And guess what happens when you turn your steering wheel clockwise: You turn right. And what happened in the video? The truck went left, even though she tried to turn right.
Conclusion: None of this was her fault.

She was literally being suspended above the river by a 2.5 inch piece of steel where the fifth wheel attaches to the trailer and latches onto the pin. The tractor weighs around 5 or 6 tons which could've easily detached from the trailer pin and plummeted into the river below. She had an angel protecting her that day.
Fortunately this trucking company hauls food like frozen meals and not anything very heavy. If she was hauling anything heavier it probably would have given way. But she got very lucky with the bridges welding and the massive beam that held the trailer down.

I am a truck driver myself. When this 1st happened so many people were talking smack about this young lady. Saying horrible things like she shouldn't be driving and they give everyone licenses. Coast guard shouldn’t receive praise for going into dangerous waters saving sailors from falling overboard or a sinking ship, it’s just their job. Search and rescue shouldn’t receive praise when they have to pull people from raging floods. Firefighters shouldn’t be praised when they put themselves in danger trying to save someone like in this scenario because it’s just their job.
It is their job but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t praise them for risking their lives doing their jobs. It takes a certain selfless person to go into harms way to save another person and most people are unwilling to do it, at least for the current pay that most of these people get.

Majority of these people don’t seem to grasp basic driving skills or if they have a driver’s license, they need to get it revoked. They’re a danger to the public.
Seeing how she’s on the right side, she’s from the US. So that being said, in the first couple of seconds of the video, it shows she was struck by an on coming car attempting to illegally overtake the car in front of them. This lead that idiot car to crash into this lady’s semi truck.
With the force of impact, it only makes sense that the sense of direction and the position of her vehicle has been pushed into an uncontrollable direction. Hence why she tried to correct the vehicle, but was unable to due to the impact. This led to her vehicle’s hood falling off the bridge.
“Some” people in the comments are blaming her for crashing into the rails and going off the bridge. These are the same people who get into car crashes and blame the other side when they themselves are the main purpose of the crash.
These people need to get their driver’s license revoked and their cars repossessed.

They had to swerve to avoid it, but they already should’ve seen it coming up. Unless the parked car didn’t have their hazard lights on. Glad the driver was caught & charged, at least. I have a strong feeling that the steering linkage broke up in the collision which caused no steering response and the collision was in a way where the left front wheel would be yanked forcefully into an unaligned position which lead to the trucker going off the bridge.

She MAY have been aiming for the steel support, but she turns into the edge. She gives the steering wheel a full revolution (hand over hand to be exact). Had she simply held the steering wheel in place, it looks like she would have simply drifted into the oncoming lane.

If there are it's because of forced perspective, the camera makes it seem she steered left when she did not. She steered right but I can tell you an impact like that to a lorry your steering is definitely gone regardless

People do not realize that once you lose a steer tire there is nothing you can do. She turned the wheel back the opposite direction and still went over. Even in a small vehicle once you lose the front the vehicle will do whatever without any permission

The thing is, why wouldn’t you. You lose the front, steering doesn’t work, you do it anyway
You still have the front, steering works, you save yourself.

I'm still trying to figure out how anyone is blaming her? She was hit by a vehicle that was swerving in and out of traffic on a suspended license and crossed into her lane, hit her, took at the semi's steering and sent her over the edge.
What part of that is her fault?
Yeah the split second the truck starts going to the left, she starts counter steering to the right. Its literally not humanly possible to do anything better here. Unless one of the cams is mirrored, that would mean shed be actively steering into the river but i seriously doubt that.
