Police Stop Cyclist After Close Passing Him BX13DCZ

  • Poor planning by that police officer - shouldn't have overtaken there, and should've waited behind. It was also much too close, I'd estimate about 1 foot from the right elbow of the cyclist. I really can't understand how he'd think that was enough room. I'm also confused by the female officer's telling that cyclist that he doesn't have to be rude about it. I thought that cyclist was perfectly well behaved.

Hi RoWdy The one, the highway code does not specify the safe distance, it does mandate the allowance should be the same as for a small car, I suspect that amounts to a good deal more than just one metre, it is very easy on a bike to swerve at least that much in a very short distance in order to avoid a pothole, of which there are far too many because drivers think nothing of driving through puddles, isolated and insulated as they are in their sound-proofed bouncy little tin boxes.

It wouldn't have fased me as I lived 11 years in the Netherlands where other cyclists and mopeds pass with 3 inches clearance, but the standard of cycling there is far higher. I notice a lot of UK cyclists are not very confident or competent. On a road like this I don't understand why they don't just paint a bike lane onto the right of the pavement on both sides, since hardly any pedestrians are using this. The same goes for all over the UK, there are empty pavements everywhere outside city centres yet cyclists have to use the road where there isn't a bike lane i.e. in 99% of places.
