    0:00 Introduction: Is oatmeal healthy?
    1:17 New information on oatmeal
    7:00 Is eating breakfast healthy?
7:17 Learn more about the benefits of skipping breakfast!
Is oatmeal bad for you? Let’s talk about it.
The small packets of flavored oatmeal contain a lot of sugar, and even though they may be marketed as healthy-they’re not.
    But what about unsweetened oatmeal?
Here are three things you might not know about unsweetened oatmeal:
    1. Certain studies show a significant improvement in blood sugar and cholesterol. However, the control in one of these studies is white bread. The study also only showed an improvement in blood sugar right after the meal.
Part of the study referring to cholesterol was only on consuming beta-glucan, which is an isolated compound in oatmeal. In a different study, the participants all had diabetes, and they didn’t see a change in their blood glucose levels.
    2. Oats contain a type of gluten called avenin. This protein has been known to increase cytokines.
    3. Oat products have often been treated with glyphosate. The World Health Organization classifies glyphosate as a carcinogen.
It may be beneficial to skip breakfast altogether and give intermittent fasting a try. If you do consume breakfast, eggs would be a healthier choice than oatmeal.

I’ve eaten Quaker Oates every single day, even camping, or traveling, oatmeal has been part of my breakfast for decades. My grandmother who passed at 94 ate it every day since a child. She worked till she was 80. So I guess oatmeal should be skipped? Nope. I’m not changing up a thing. Most people around me at my age I know, suffer from may health related issues. We're eating rolled oats(not instant) every morning..30-40 grams of rolled oats ..add 10-15 grams of oat bran, add nuts, banana, unsweetened cacao powder(optional)do not pour too much boiled water... just enough to cover the rolled oats and oat bran..not too liquid to avoid glucose. The key point is avoid boiling the rolled oats. Actually above 65°c the starch starts "to leak" making it more digestible, hence a quicker and higher glycemic load.
The insulinemic response being mainly driven by the glucose, no peak of sugar =no peak of insulin.
In the literature, the GI of large oats flakes is given for around 50 but is more than 60 for thin flakes. Boiled for 8 minutes it can reach more than 70.
Take note that the flakes(rolled oats) are already pre cooked, it is not like eating raw oats. Overnight rolled oats during summer. We buy organic rolled oats here in France. 14 hour Intermittent fasting is enough for us but we never skip breakfast. Hope Dr. Berg will make a video on the effect of eating eggs/dairy products on prostate health.

For my second meal of the day, I eat a meat and some vegetables. I feel healthier this way, and it works for me. My grandmother is 95 yrs old, healthy, and has eaten oatmeal her whole life. My grandfather just recently died from natural causes at 96 yrs old, and he also ate oatmeal his whole life. Both of my grandparents were mostly oatmeal, meat, veggie, and fruit eaters my whole life. My grandmother would also bake the occasional cake or pie, and they would eat that too. Neither of them have ever had any major health issues. My grandparents are African American and have lived in California all of their adult lives, after moving there from Texas in the 1950's. I said all of this to say, Oatmeal has proven longevity of life benefits in my family. I think there are more pros than cons with oatmeal.

I genuinely don't think my food anxiety has been as bad as it is now. Anyone else relate to this? Honestly I stand in a shop sometimes staring at the foods thinking will this affect my stomach, my mood everything. I don't know what or who to trust anymore. I've noticed food in the UK has got noticeably bad, especially meat and veg - unless you buy organic or grass fed etc but that isn't sustainable as its so fooking expensive! I try and eat as clean as possible, minimal diary , minimal gluten and still my guts are inflamed weekly which in turn affects mood. In my thirties now but in my twenties I never seemed to have this neurosis about food, maybe not caring when you're younger is the secret! Eating and choosing the right foods never become so stressful. I have a high metabolism and naturally slim, so putting on weight healthily without oats would seem impossible.

I have low blood sugar and believe me when I say I know immediately how food impacts glucose. I've never been able to eat American oatmeal, steel cut or otherwise. However, when I was in an extended stay in Scotland that included our meals, we were served pinhead oatmeal everyday. There was no other source of protein, so this is what I ate. It sustained me well and I did not experience my normal reaction to oatmeal, which is a glucose drop. I was impressed so I ordered some from pinhead oatmeal online. The EU (and at that time, it included Scotland) does not allow pesticides, additives, preservatives, etc. It's America that seems to prize production over health.

Or does your condition just mean your blood sugars can drop for no reason or certain foods trigger it? I have actually collapsed several times from low blood sugar (hypos) and I know how absolutely horrible you feel. I thought I was having a stroke the first couple of times. One time I was in a boxing gym (for amateurs more fun than serious) and this new trainer came in and had us all doing HILT and wed never experienced it before and expected a gentle spar and I felt incredibly sick and I knew I was going to collapse and something was seriously wrong with me but before I could shout "I'm going to pass out" several minutes had passed and I was on the floor , they were forcing sugary snacks and drinks into me and I felt myself feeling better the more sugar I had

Unfortunately, I had to have a thyroidectomy 4 years ago. I thought my Graves Disease would go away after the thyroidectomy, but no, I had to do my own research and thankfully, from last year there's much more information about it. I went on a low carb and gluten free diet, which led me to buy gluten free oats. I still react a bit, but not as bad as before. And you're right Dr. Berg, skipping breakfast as part of intermittent fasting, it does wonders to me. Most autoimmune diseases benefit from gluten free diets. If in the beginning it's hard to cut off gluten, you can always take enzymes such as protease, cellulase and amylase as supplements. These enzymes help gluten digestion, but of course when gluten is ingested in small portions. Hope this helps :)

I think your choice to eat any food depends on your health goals and current conditions. For those with heart disease, oats have more benefits in clearing out the arteries and lowering LDL cholesterol, so it really helps. Monsanto and Conagra use sprays and GMO seeds that are the main culprit to side effects to your health. Research the producer you are buying from- it makes a difference! For example, Quaker Oats are treated with awful chemicals that remain on the oats and make it into your body. A great alternative is Bob’s Red Mill. More expensive- but my health has drastically improved (and my dad reversed heart disease, diabetes and hypertension) since being mindful of the chemicals, pesticides and toxins foods are treated with. Natural is best- non-pasteurized.
Note: this is just what I found that has helped me and many others. I hope this helps even a tiny bit that it’s not always that a certain food is “bad”, but rather, how it is produced makes it toxic

I don't really know much about oats or oatmeal, but I like non processed foods and this fit the bill. I just went for my annual doctor's visit and my doctor (of many years) asked WHAT I had been doing/eating - my cholesterol was lower than it ever had been, perfectly normal rather than on the 'edge or border' of being high. I replied "lentils and Irish oats." She said "keep doing it." So, I will ;~) I think Dr. Berg had good things to say about the kind of oats/oatmeal to eat as he enlightened me, letting me know both sides of eating oatmeal daily.

Diane, I have been following a low carb diet for a long time and I have eliminated most grains like bread, rice, wheat products.I have an exception on oatmeal. I will NOT give up organic steel cut oats. I did an experiment on myself. After I went for a run in the morning, I added cinnamon, chia and macademia butter to my steel cut oats and wore a continuous blood glucose monitor for hours after consumption. The blood sugar spike was not steep, it was gradual and then became a bit flat before going down. Its all about what you add to the oatmeal ; some fat attenuates blood sugar response. I also agree on pesticides

I don't eat oatmeal every day and try to vary my diet to a degree, in a modest attempt to avoid building up toxins from constantly eating one food source. And hopefully a healthy immune system will also jump in to help. I like to use oatmeal in baking, etc. In pancakes and granola too. I cannot say I am 100% organic in my diet. Maybe 80%. Then there's non GMO. I buy organic frozen corn and organic cornmeal because occasionally I crave fresh cranberry corn bread. Unless I grow it myself, how can I guarantee my outside sources are truly organic? Not losing any sleep over it, but endeavor to make an effort to live a healthy lifestyle in these challenging times. ~ Diane

After two months of OATMEAL and hemp hearts, it was 189. Stunned my doctor. Btw, your channel is good, learned some stuff.

I personally stay away from pretty much all grains & definitely ALL refined oils in my diet (among other things). Though that does making eating out very difficult, which is why I rarely do it.

I eat oatmeal for breakfast about 4 days a week. I add some ground flaxseed, chopped walnuts, raisins, Ceylon cinnamon and small amount of raw honey. Usually follow this up with a handful of raw pumpkin seeds, a banana and a cup of coffee (no sugar). Works for me.

My uncle was over the other day and we were talking about his health and how bad it is. I told him about healthy Keto. He said he was always baffled by how Grandpa could eat eggs and bacon and sausage every morning and had perfect cholesterol, and Grandma are oatmeal every morning and her cholesterol was through the roof. Makes sense now. Thank you!

What's going to make even more sense is this: Majority of cholesterol is made by our bodies, so in effect, what you eat has way less effect on it, than just how much your body naturally makes. Chances are if your grandparents switched diets, grandma's cholesterol would still be higher...

I'm having wholegrain oat bread for years now, no issue whatsoever. It's processing has been very limited. Having an organic and non-organic brand but both work fine for me. The interesting thing doc Berg mentions about delayed response - I used to have that when I was figuring out my allergies and intolerances, fiendishly difficult. Oatmeal with milk didn't sit well with me - but then I found out I needed to stay away from milk protein.

Oatmeal is such a power food in so many ways. I try to avoid carbs as much as I can (i.e. pasta, bread, etc) but oatmeal is my exception! It helps the body on so many levels.
