On a more serious note I believe that this particular interview will be studied in debate classes for generations to come. It was such a perfect example of repeated bias.
No, I bet she had amazing grades in debate class, otherwise she would never get such an important job. Besides being a woman and a preferential hire for the company to appeal more to feminists.
Debate class is far removed from reality. In a school setting that is heavily soaked in politics and whatever biases your teacher has.

If you go back and follow the aftermath of that interview, Kathy Newman got persecuted! Jordan had to step in and compassionately plead with people to leave her alone.
@@lesleyclaster6878 she was constantly trying to put words in his mouth, twist the words he was saying and trying to get him to say something that agrees with her cause the moment she did the interview would be over and that would be the only clip shown. Her owning him and him agreeing with her.
She came into it with an agenda and already made a decision on who JP is. She’s was badly mistaken and was unable/unwilling to change tact during the interview.

He never argued, he just clarified. What a nice way of winning a battle without even put out a fight.
The fact that Dr. Peterson is "polarizing" absolutely blows my mind. What exactly is polarizing? I just don't understand - never in my 32 years have I encountered a man so genuinely curious about the human condition as well as individual people themselves and who genuinely wants everyone to be the best version of themselves. It baffles me that anyone could say a hateful word against this man.
He is only considered polarizing by people who live in a state of polarization by default. In this case it's left wing extremists. Any extremist will naturally oppose anyone who is not as extreme as they are, not even bothering to listen to the man.
he's obviously well educated and you're spot on about the human condition part. however, he only became popular after an extreme anti-trans take that transphobes absolutely lapped up and put him on that pedastel. so no matter if part of him is clearly good quality, the grift he's got going now keeping that right-wing/transphobic audience has really put any quality aside

I'm fine with however you think you are, but you still have biology and when you go to a doctor s/he has to treat you based on biology, not what you think. There are trends among men and women. eg . Women have endurance for making sure she can run longer with the kiddos. Men have a speed burst to chase off predators. and it does not matter how much testosterone you drain. I don't recommend that for any biological man because it can cause depression especially as you get older.

She got hammered on twitter for this. Everything she said people would say “so you’re saying” and twist it. Like, “good morning”, “so you’re saying the evening is bad?”
the worst part of this is she never acknowledged she was in the wrong or did her job poorly.

As a 68 year old father of an adult son and daughter, I can see the tears well up in their eyes when I tell them that I’m proud of them. Those are words that I never heard. I realize how important it is for me to say it to them.

She completely was impressed by him by the end. And it started to go that way right after he complimented her about her being un agreeable as a trait that makes her a successful person. It shocked her and made her feel validated that he didn’t consider her a weak women but a strong person.
Yes she definitely got a little flustered there. She is definitely a strong woman and a lot of her interviews are good. I think in this one she had too much personal investement and Jordans calm dismantlement of her heartfelt "Truths" was just too much for her.
My favourite thing about this guy is how he can win an argument without even really arguing back. He just lays out the facts for how they are and it infuriates people

The really interesting part of this discussion is that he clicks from interviewee to clinician after 3-4 minutes. He picked up on her hostility and then demolished her preconceptions.

Backstory about this interview. Peterson didn’t know what he was walking into. He said on the JRE that before the cameras turned on that she was very pleasant and nice to talk to. After they started rolling he immediately noticed a shift in her behavior. The news channel also aired the interview thinking they “got him” but the overwhelming response from viewers was in favor of Jordan. I believe for months after this dropped, thousands of people would respond “so what you’re saying is…” whenever Cathy would tweet something 😂. Solid reaction and props on picking up where the interview was going early on.
Appreciate the information. JP is an unsurpassed orator and debater. His logic and presentation of facts can not be disputed. It is how our society should operate; our relationships would be happier and longer-lasting. This woman is hearing but not listening.
Yeah, like he said to Joe it took him by surprise at first because she went from very pleasant to being on the offensive - but he'd been through enough attacks by that point in his life he just immediately changed gears and became very conscious of his words..

My favorite part of any JP interview is when they seem to forget what his profession is and he just deadpan says "im a clinical psychologist" it happens at least once per interview and its hilarious to me.

My favorite part is in that radio interview one, which also has video on youtube, and at one point the camera switches to an angle where you can see JP discuss at his usual high level and high precision with a similarly incompetent host as Cathy, while he's also literally doodling the typical "i'm bored" doodles.

Well, I've got to say, I'm a Canadian woman and was raised in the same area of Alberta that Jordan Peterson was. I'm a couple of years older. He is an amazing orator and has a mind that few can challenge, to be sure. Everyone regardless of gender can benefit from listening to him. He often is right on the money. Sadly, most feminists can't stand him because he points out the flaws in what they're pushing and makes them see the truth with facts. Feminists and most liberal-minded people don't like facts any longer, they prefer emotion over critical thinking.

@@theseanie9958 It wasn't a transphobic issue. It was the issue of forced speech. The subject could have been "words you must use to describe pickles" and he still would have objected. Making laws where the state tells you to say their words or they put you in jail goes against huge foundational issues in law going back to English common law. The MSM painting it as transphobic is just part of their usual disinformation campaign. It's really stupid too. He has had plenty of clients and social contacts who are trans. He has good communications with them. It's when the state gets involved when the line is crossed.
We are not to be the state's puppets saying their words. If they keep pushing that kind of garbage, then it will come down to shooting. Just watch, they'll probably back off just before that point, which is the telltale sign of a bully.

When I was in high school there was a piranha tank in our biology class. I am not entirely positive this was legal but it was a private school. When the piranha were young whenever the teacher would drop a goldfish in the tank to feed them it would get devoured immediately. However, as they matured the piranha wouldn't necessarily eat the goldfish right away. It was as if they recognized the situation. The goldfish wasn't going anywhere, wasn't a threat and they could eat when they decided to eat. It is a funny thing how the goldfish would respond to this situation. You might think that it would try to remain as far from the piranha as possible but in fact it would instead attempt to assert dominance swimming up to the piranha and bumping them. The piranha would largely ignore this and in their good time converge and begin taking chunks out of the goldfish.
This is what this interview was like except I think Cathy Newman honestly thought that she was the piranha.

Just found your channel the other day. You are one of THE most enthusiastic entertaining and seemingly Genuine content creaters I have come across thus far. Thank you.
What I love most about this conversation, and why I think it became so viral, is because it takes all the inane arguments that happen online and forces them to deal with an person who's educated on the subject and able to react in real time. People resonate with this because anyone paying attention can see that this is how 90+% of these conversations go online. Person A puts forth an argument, person B twists what they said and declares them to be a sexist/racist/transphobe/nazi/etc and then the entire dialogue breaks down into no-I'm-not-yes-you-are. It's been happening for fucking years, especially since the public discourse stage moved to social media.
To have a person who can immediately respond in person and break down exactly what his point actually is just does so much to expose the absurdity of the whole thing.
Kathy wasn't waiting for her turn to speak, she was arguing with a man who wasn't even there. She was arguing with the demon she already believed him to be. One last thing, he has one other book called Maps of Meaning. If you want something deeper and more challenging this is a great one, full of history our public schools intentionally alter or avoid.
It is on audible. I wouldn't have read it. Audible made it accessible. But MoM, 12 rules for life and 12 more rules for life are all basically the same book.

@@djjazzyjeff1232 I enjoyed all three books. I would never recommend his first book to anyone other than someone interested specifically in foundational discussions of meaning. I wouldn't recommend the 2nd 12 rules to anyone who wasn't completely enamored of the first book. Based on Cathy Newmans (and many other folks) lobster failure, there are a lot of folks challenged by reference frame changes.
But you will find both books fully contained in the first book. The 2nd and 3rd books are just rearrangements from the first.
At the core of it, I find my own dilemma. How to teach someone to tie a sheetbend. The short answer is Rinse, Lather, Repeat and then get them to rinse, lather and repeat. First step is MAKE THEM HOLD THE ROPE.

"Equality of outcome" is the antithesis of "Equal Opportunity". Equality of outcome can ONLY happen at the expense of not having Equal opportunity.
I don't remember who said this, but the quote was, "You can have freedom, or you can have equality".
And it isn't a man vs woman, or a race vs race thing. If given the freedom to do whatever they want to do, some people will automatically be on top and as a consequence of that, some of us will be at the bottom.
The only way to achieve true equality is by forcing those on top to not be on top, or forcefully pushing up those aren't on top. Either way, it comes at the cost of someone's personal freedom.
Neither of them sound like perfect system. But, I'd be leaning on the side of personal freedom for all, over forcing anyone in to _(or out of)_ something that they do _(or don't)_ want to do.
That statement is so simplified that it's dangerous: Look online for the illustration of the three kids on boxes watching a baseball game (or whatever sport). Three kids, each different heights. One is tall enough to see over the fence unassisted. The middle kid needs only one box to stand on in order to see the game. The third, shortest kid needs two boxes to stand on in order to see over the fence. Equal opportunity as you're using it would give them each a single box. Equal outcome gives no boxes to the tallest (he doesn't need one), one box to the middle kid, and two to the shortest kid. The tricky thing is the wording: by providing "equality of outcome" --- i.e. equity (as opposed to equality) --- all children have the "equal opportunity" to view the game... it's a tougher nut to crack than you might think

Historically, Equality of Outcome doesn't involve boxes at all. It's achieved by cutting off the legs of the tall an medium kid so that none of them can watch the game.

More people in history have been raised out of poverty by giving them the opportunity to work hard to get ahead. No, it's not a guarantee, but it's the method that provides the most freedom and hope for individuals.

I had been following his work for years already when that interview took place.
I watched it when it was released, and man, that “Gotcha” moment, even years later, still puts a huge smile on my face.

Not that I agree with everything he says, but if more people behaved and thought like him, or at least followed some of his personal development advice, the world would’probably be a much better placer in my humble opinion!

That was nice he did that but I don’t hold him and fall for that at all all particularly because of the way he said it he did not say it in a mean spiteful way it was said in a joking way and it was the truth. From where i belong, India, such problems do exist but i can't imagine such problems to exist in America type countries atleast. Here even brick laying job women works coz had to feed their families. They even let their 8 year old kids help just to get those half breads for them. And many workplaces even ask sexual favours off women if wanna promote them. Entertainment industry is prime example of it. Not so sure how it's there but atleast in India the data that women are prejudiced not only in work ethics but even in social ethics is true. Only places where equality can be barely observed is metropolitan cities (ignoring the shady things happen there ofc), ofc there always exists small % of people who would take advantage of extra rights and attention given to them, but such small % is common in any form of social rights.

There was a really interesting discussion I remember hearing where JP talks about this interview after the fact. He was able to pinpoint the exact point in the interview when he realized this was never intended to be a fair and open discussion or debate. At that point he made a shift from trying to defensively answer accusations to actively going on offense having realized that it was a game to make him look bad right from the start. The patience with which he suppressed the desire to respond with anger is more than I could have managed. If history is written with any sense of honesty I believe he will be remembered as one of the great philosophical minds of an era. Sadly, partisan politics brings heavy blinders. At the end of the day he wants to help people and preserve freedom.

I am not a 'Jordan Peterson fan." And from the impressions I'd received about him, I fully expected to dislike his perspectives and arguments. But i quickly realized that his immaculate arguments are something of a lost art, and the respect he shows for everyone he argues with, even, and maybe especially those who appear to hate or be angered by him, is a treasured commodity. Our inability to have calm and objective discussions as a society is truly tearing us apart. And for those who feel that the rich and greedy are ruining our lives, it is this terrible polarity of politics and social discourse that is allowing us to be subjugated. Nobody worthwhile, or even Jordan Peterson himself, wants you to agree with all his (or their) viewpoints. However, have the courage of your convictions, the decency to respect the perspectives of others, and the openness to change your views if you find them to be flawed.

Yes, when he described that kind of man it immediately reminded me of my Grandpa and great Grandpa. They were insanely hard workers who were described by everyone who talks about them as being the most energetic men who were always doing *something* . Whether it was fun or work they put everything they had into it and then some. For example my Grandpa was an engineer who split off from his job decades ago and hired many of his former coworkers to work for him.
But a year into his new business he was struggling financially in a way that could put it under, and the only way to save it was convince a group of officials from the bank to back up his company. My family was incredibly stressed, and one of my Uncles who worked for him noticed the day of the meeting that Grandpa was smiling and as energetic as ever despite all of the stress and exhaustion this was putting them under.
So my Uncle asked him how he was still so optimistic despite this being the difference between bankrupting or saving the buisness?
Grandpa just smiled and said "Being sad or upset ain't gonna fix it, all we can do is give it our best shot. And if we go down at least we go down knowing we gave it our all. Keep your chin up!
And he proceeded to go to that meeting that the bank officials already had plans to put him under, and layed down a plan on how to repay the bank and managed to convince them all that his company would be worth the investment and saved the whole business.
Despite him passing away 5 years ago, he's still a shining example to me what hard work, ingenuity, and relentless hope can do to a man. I wish I could've talked to him now now I'm older and can even begin to understand what the weight of his position truly brought.

His "got you" moment is something he regrets. In other interviews he says he wishes he didn't say "got you". Unlike us, he's not trying to "one up" people......which is why I have great respect for how he does his interviews.
I disagree with that, though. She needed that moment to be put into her place. And it sort of loosened up the situation through humour simultaneously. I think it was a perfectly fine approach.

@@ira233 She was paid to do that in the sense that her employer knows how she is, but she wasn't specifically paid to purposely misrepresent Jordan Peterson's positions. She would have been far more effective if she had genuine arguments to counter Peterson. The only way she could make Peterson appear wrong was to put words into his mouth that he didn't say. She did that on literally every response or question to him. That's all she had the ability to do. It was sad to watch.

The whole problem with this interview is that it really isn't an interview. Cathy is not really doing an interview as a journalist, but is taking on the role of an activist at a debate.
That is the case with the GQ video interview and then the first print interview he did with the Sunday Times. None of these women realized what a brilliant opportunity they were given to perhaps make history interviewing one of the greatest minds of our times. Instead they fashioned hit pieces and should have been moved back to the entertainment division covering the Karfasions.

"being a homemaker today is a luxury of being married to a rather succesfull man" is a flat out wrong statement. i am 26 years old and my parents arent rich by any means, if anything my familly's financial situation is on the lower end of the spectrum. 6 years ago i had no more than 5k to my name that i saved up myself from working.. now i have over 500k to my name by investing in cryptocurrencys and stocks which now generates me passive income to sustain myself. i no longer work a job. and i barely spended any time on being "good" at it. i simply bought certain assets and holded on to them still to this day whilst taking occasional profits from time to time.
dont be a victim to circumstances, there are so many oppertunity's to be financially independend. you dont need to be a genius or lucky enough to marry a wealthy partner. even with 100$ you can make it big in a few years time.
"they arranged society such that the kids most at risk have the least parental attention and oversight" that is on the parents themselves, not society nor the goverment. why would you even want to have kids if your financially strugglin in the first place? having a child will make things only that much more expensive to you. work on having a solid foundation first.
Or you both are still expected to do those things, but get a lump sum "equal" pay for your work. This might be nice for you, but I'd wager would effectively kill your husband's motivation to excel and try to improve things for himself and his family.

Most reactions about this interview that statement is universal.
I was quite embarrassed for Kathy based on her apparent eagerness to jump onto almost anything Dr. Peterson said, and to reframe it (ala 'strawman') so as to paint him as meaning things he absolutely didn't mean. I found her dynamics predatory and opportunistic with an eye on malice and damage. I don't know anything about how she may have reformed herself since this interview but unless she has, I think it's fair to characterize her behavior as utterly despicable and malevolent.

I constantly watch this interview the way others listen to a favorite song. Rarely in life have I witnessed a scene played out so perfectly that you swear it was scripted. I graduated with UofT Psychology major but he wasn't a big name them- dame how I wish he was}- then I came across your videos {like yesterday ;)} and reviews of JP and I started to listen to them {after I watched all his interviews so I knew what to expect}. I hated this interviewer, she was so confrontational!!!!! I recall in your first review of him that you said he was/is so precise in what he says and what words he uses- you were spot-on! I continued to listen to your reviews of him; you're actually really good ;)

This is without a doubt the best interview of the culture wars. Jordan was brilliant, but nobody has interviewed him as well as Cathy Newman. Like most in the mainstream media, Newman was not content to just impartially interview Jordan, but started to debate him as well. She wanted to debate an alt-right opinion leader, instead she faced a polite man with a complex understanding of the human condition.
Debating with Jordan Peterson was her first mistake, trying to put words into his mouth was her 2 to 38th mistake.

I am going through th JP-Shapiro phase. I am neither right nor left, but God have all these vids opened my eyes to so many things I didn't think about. I have always had this fear to listen to what I disagree with just because I was afraid I'd lose whatever opinions I had because I couldn't defend them against the arguments. But nothing made me more open minded and tolerant like emersing in different opinions.
Do that - I listen to good thinkers on every side. I'm more center-right but have to think from all sides.

The ability to have a logical debate is a dying art and skill and Jordan Peterson is one of the few people that is like a Jedi master when it comes to have a logical and well structured conversation. It is interesting, having rewatched this interview many times, how many times Cathy conflates an individual woman's ability to strive for success with the nebulus average of all womens' success.
It's like arguing that an individual person can't have higher than average intelligence, because the average exists.
As a woman, if I decide to sacrifice other aspects of my life, to make it to the top, why on earth would I care about the success of the 'average woman' happens to be?!
Basically just saying that all women deserve to have the same as men, regardless of how much work or type of work they contribute to.

Man have to sacrifice a lot to get to the top too. The guys who are good at interacting with other people and have no trouble meeting woman (or man) or somehow get a job where they don’t need to work long hrs prefer to work less and enjoy their lives. I have some friends like that. But those guys who are deemed “ugly, uncool, weird” eventually realize there’s nothing else for them in the world besides their computer, videogames or work. And then they study a lot, work a lot, make money, start getting nice things. Then for the first time they feel important, wanted, special. Then they keep working more and more hrs until they can barely enjoy any of the nice things they got, even their spouses and children. That’s why you see so many high level male CEO’s and fewer females. Woman are smart and realize they don’t need that and it’s not worthy the stress, aggravation, the toll on their body and mind. Smart guys realize that too an enjoy and live their youth instead of slaving away just looking for more money and success.
And I say that looking back at my life with some sadness. I wasted my 20’s studying and working. At one point I was working close to 120hrs a week. I got a masters and Dr. degrees, Owned my business and 4 houses by the time I was 30 and still single. At that point I married my beautiful wife and still wanted to work 15 hrs days. We fought a lot because of that until I reduced to 10 hrs a day or so, and that made me depressed and I had a nervous breakdown. I didn’t know how to do anything else but work. I didn’t enjoy time off with my family because I was always thinking about how much money I could be making instead. It took the housing crisis of 2008 when I lost a lot of money and things to realize how little those things mattered. My wife stuck with me even when she started making more money than me. I felt ruined and humiliated because I saw my worth as my job and possessions. Today I’m older and have slowed down, I’m enjoying my teen kids before they leave home. So I can say for experience that I don’t envy any ceo that has to work 100+ hrs every week in a high stress job. I know the toll that takes. Women see it’s not worthy.. And that’s where the pay gap comes from. High paying crappy jobs that only guys are stupid enough to take..

If something I do or say provokes anyone, that's on them, not me. Like Jordan, I'm not generally provocative by nature. An example would be in my work life I've had many people ask me to slow my pace because I'm making them look bad. After this happened a couple times, I came up with a response of "No. YOU are making you look bad!" Anyway, thanks for bringing Jordan to us.

Funny thing with the "pink tax" such as blue vs pink products, there is actually a direct production cost difference, in addition to all the other marketing reasons.
Blue dye bonds with cheaper plastics better than pink dye, so to make a product pink requires a higher quality and therefore more expensive plastic, so there is obviously a difference in production costs, which then gets amplified through the other variables before they make it to the shelf
Exactly, one of many actual factors that tend to make female products more expensive. But it all comes down to choice, there are cheaper products and nobody is forcing you to anything.
The cost difference is due to basic economics. If Pink was the number one colour choice then it would be cheaper than black. She's assuming all women want Pink helmets in a 50/50 split with all men wanting black, which is clearly not the case. The majority of women will also choose a black helmet. It will only be a minority of women who want Pink helmets or any pink product in the first place, so lesser products made, so a higher cost. It's just economics as I said

The idea that we can "change the rules" to make it easier for women to "succeed" by selecting on more feminine traits is a fundamental misapprehension of what is happening.
It's not that male traits were set up as the criteria for success by a committee. It's that in the careers where men dominate typically male traits are beneficial to competently performing the job, and the same is true for feminine traits in the careers women dominate. That's why even within the medical field where women dominate broadly you can break it out into the sub-fields that see patients (children in particular) and find women dominate these areas even more, but in other areas where less patient interaction is expected (e.g. surgeons) men gain ground or become dominate again.
And the reasons are obvious, in the patient focused areas agreeableness becomes a massive asset. But in a surgeon with a disagreeable personality any time the OR isn't configured perfectly they are more apt to raise hell and make sure it is done right every single time going forward. Being disagreeable and conscientious makes them fantastic advocates for their patients and relentless in their attention to the sorts of details that routinely save lives. Conversely a lack of agreeableness in a patient centered practice can manifest as a rather unpleasant bedside manner. And if you're not aware bedside manner is regarded as a critically important aspect of physician-patient relationships in establishing trust to quickly and reliably get the correct information needed to diagnose and treat the patient all while reducing stress on patients by putting them at ease.
Regardless, even the above is only a superficial look at how these traits can benefit/detract from success, but it is in these ways that the traits are determining success of people in their fields. There is no cabal determining which traits are good and which are bad, it's just the reality of *what the job requires* . So asking to change it is like asking why we don't use square tires on our cars, the answer is because round tires simply do the job to a superior standard and we all, both sexes, benefit when jobs are done to a higher standard.

@Alex Lawson I am speaking from the perspective of an American watching news presenters in America. It's brutal here on MSM channels. It's really a wonder anyone gets a word in edgewise. In fact often shouting over each other is the de rigueur of the day here. So for me this woman was competent and polite. Yes, I know you're probably surprised.

If I understand Sonia's point correctly, she is pointing out (accurately) that most interviewers in the MSM use the tactic of asking a question and then shouting out the next question three words into the reply, or shouting out their own opinion over the words of the person they are suppose to be interviewing.
