David Draiman has described himself as "sick as a dog" the night he performed this on Conan. 102° temperature and bronchitis to boot. David Draiman is a genuine baritone, with a massive vocal range, and was classically trained as a cantor in a synagogue when he was younger. I heard that they didn't even tell him they were going to use Auto-Tune, they just did it without his permission. He didn't find out until post, and he didn't even find out from them, he heard it in the track and confronted them with it. Man, was he ever pissed. From what I hear he hates Auto-Tune, 'cause he feels like it's cheating. You should go listen to the live concert version with Myles Kennedy.

It's unlikely he was unaware of the auto tune. These kinds of TV events are pretty meticulously coordinated ahead of time and all the specifics of the performance are designed. Most TV performances will not even allow for a completely live take. Too many things that can go wrong.
As for how much he hates auto tune... well.. the studio recording of the song has auto tune clear as day on it, so...

If you listen close you can detect the corrections. But in two spots you can hear his voice crack because of the bronchitis. Amazing he was able to do this well as sick as he was. Listen to the official video and you'll hear his perfect multi-octive voice go from the basement to the roof without a fault. And without being tuned. Beautiful.

David Draiman is a classically trained singer and has an amazing sound and range. Disturbed is a phenomenal metal band. Really enjoyed your take on his performance. It is such a pity when live performances are ruined by autotune... People do not understand that singing isn't flawless. Every video on youtube where singer is using extreme singing (belting, whistle, distortion...) and is perfect is heavily processed and either lipsynced or autotuned. There is just no way anybody can lay a perfect vocals on hard songs in 1 take. There is always gonna be some bad timing or flat/sharp note or vibrato flaw or something... Hiding these flaws puts unspeakable pressure on newcomers. I do not understand why these vocal coaches do not react only to unmiced performances of singers. Makes much more sense... Like these 2 for example: ua-cam.com/video/5BPGmCClb-c/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/uAjaGUdfsPA/v-deo.html

But he does have an operatic quality to his voice so I can see where you may have thought he was opera trained. He definitely was sick during this performance and yes he still killed it cuz the show must go on right? He also has an issue where a repair done to his vocal chords has failed so no he essentially gets acid pouring into his vocal chords. He now changes how he eats and when and how he sleeps. His name is David Draiman. I've known him personally for about 14yrs now. No, he doesn't use auto-tune. He and I have had many convos about music as I'm a drummer and singer in a metal band. He has a phenomenal voice. However, this particular show (against his initial protests) they did add a slight auto-tune to his voice. Apparently they do that with all the people who go on to make sure it's a totally clean and smooth performance. All his other shows and performances, it's all him. Dave has such a great range crazy voice control. Tara Simon is an absolutely amazing vocalist herself. I've seen many of her videos and such. All those freaking out and making rude and disrespectful comments need to grow up. She was pointing out what she heard and noticed. As is HER JOB! Read the name of the video genius's. TArt Garfunkle went to Columbia in New York. He met a guy named Sanford Greenberg who loved music and literature like Garfunkle and they became great friends and soon roommates. One day Greenberg was at a baseball game and his eyes started failing on him. Soon he was completely blind. Greenberg quit school and went home and fell into a great depression. Garfunkle visited him often trying to convince him to get back to Columbia. Garfunkel told Greenberg to call him "Darkness" in sympathy. With a great deal of help from Art, Sanford did come back to Columbia. Garfunkel helped him to class, filled our forms and papers, etc. One day Garfunkle took Greenberg to Grand Central Station (10,000 people, maybe more.) Garfunkel told Greenberg he forgot he had to be somewhere and up and left him there to find his own way home (over streets of cobblestone...) Greemberg found the right train and in his mind he saw the graffiti on the subway walls. Greenberg finally made it back and bumped into someone who said, "sorry." Greenberg recognized Garfunkel's voice. Garfunkel was with him all the way home. Greenberg got his confidence back, went back to school and when Garfunkle needed money to get his first record cut, Greenberg gave him his last $400. Wiith that Sound of Silence was published. Sanford Greenberg went on to Harvard and Oxford and became a wealthy businessman.

    @12211219 2 роки тому +1

My interpretation of this song revised:
This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing
it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very
long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective
of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the
    perspective of the awakened.
    Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in
the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing
something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted
the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware.
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone
under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the
dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in
the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    No one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds
    (awakened Ones) telling
those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy
those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle
    way,
but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of
    being attacked
by those that controlled the sound of silence.
They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not
to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became
    aware of the
Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time,
    it really pissed them off.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them
Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead
remained in the sound of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."
The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the
things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet.
They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by
consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through
their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the
people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship
sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?
