David Draiman was trained as a Cantor in his younger years and has complete control over his voice. Watch his mic placement. It never changes. He might look and sound like he is screaming, but he isn't. The nasal sound is likely from the flu he had during this performance. He is very anti-autotune and was furious when he found out that Conan's producers autotuned parts of this performance.

He was very ill with a high fever during this performance. He had to sit during the performance because he was weak and dizzy. I think that someone who could maintain this strength during a performance is remarkable. His voice fry is done anterior to his vocal cords with his jaw forced forward too. As you said: Wet fry. Draiman is a classically trained operatic baritone who trained for many many years to be a cantor. Do watch the actual music video for the sake of comparison. The close ups of him while he sings shows a very distinct change in the muscles he uses as well as how his glottal stops are softened so he can bring his breath through several phrases. It’s also a testimony to how well David can sing while ill. You’ll hear differences. For instance, he doesn’t sound as nasal or congested during the official video, but it’s largely the same. He is masterful. Thank you for the reaction!

I had been in the front of the pit all night and was screaming lyrics right back. I was thrown over the fence and as security was pulling me back, Draiman reached down to give me a fist-bump.

I did some research on the artist and he is from Brooklyn, NY, Jewish & studied in Orthodox schools thinking he would become a rabbi. As a teenager he didn't like the restrictions in school so went another direction but is trained as a Hazzan or Cantor. His girlfriend committed suicide when she was 18 and he tried to do so as well via heroin. After kicking heroin for good he worked in several different occupations until entering the music world. He has known sadness in his life which is often a great motivator for an artist. I'd never heard of him nor the group "Disturbed" until I stumbled on reaction videos. I was a teenager when Simon & Garfunkel came out with the original (I think I had the album) and always liked the song but this version gives me chills and stirs up emotions in me. I liked your comment, "It makes you want to fight for this man." The music video of this song is very powerful and well worth watching.

  • @Real28

The reason - to me - why this cover hits everyone so deeply, is because it's how the song _really_ was meant to be sung. S & G's version was just a bit too happy? It just wasn't sad enough. Not angry enough.
Davids version is literally the last version of this song well ever need. His vocal choices match the lyrics PERFECTLY and this is very rare.
That's why I think everyone - the vocalists and non vocalists alike - are equally moved. You know it's right, even if you don't know why.

This is from the Conan O’Brian Show. David Draiman is a sound engineer and wouldn’t ask for nor want auto-tune added....... HOWEVER, on shows like these effects are added in POST-production, which is, apparently, the story here. Also, as far as being nasally, Draiman apparently had a bit of a head cold that night. There are live versions and the official video that was put out by Disturbed.

David once shared a story that happened when he was touring smaller circuits about a man that was front and center of the stage, the guy was all tatted up with a prominent swastika on his forehead. He tells of how this guy was pretty anti-Semitic and how after a couple shows of this guy being there same spot front and centre enjoying the music whether it was before or after I forget, he tells the guy “ You know I’m a Jew don’t you?” Same guy comes back to the next show with a totally different attitude. The power of music units! On another note. David is a classically trained singer as well.

I found his voice spoke volumes about the story he is trying to convey. Sadness slowly turns into Frustration, then that turns into Anger and that turns into Rage. All of that telling the story that he is sad that no one listened and his explanation escalated into rage that no one still bothers to listen. That the Warning went ignored and he is forced to Sigh "I told you so!" at the very end.

You should check out another metal singer called Floor Jansen. She sings with a band called Nightwish and is in my opinion one of the best singers in the world. She recently took part in a dutch programme called Beste Zangers where 6 of the best singers in the Netherland sing songs to each other that are either by or important to the person they are singing to. Floor Jansen sang Phantom of the Opera with dutch opera star Henk Poort and also a version of Lady GaGas song Shallow and did it far better than Lady GaGa did.
Her band Nightwish is a Finnish band which has been around since 1996 and is the best symphonic metal band in the world and their symphonic content is contributed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metro choir. A good one to start on with their content would be Ghost love score live at Wacken Germany 2013 where they headlined to an 82,000 people audience.

In case you're planning more reactions, Nightwish is a definitely must see/hear/do..
Be sure it will be a long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey including floorfasms :-)
My personal suggestion for the some songs in order to give you a nice overview of some "styles" covered by Nightwish:
-> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting.
-> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast
-> There are a couple of great songs from Wacken: Storytime, Song of Myself, Romanticide, Ever Dream, Last Ride of the Day, Ghostriver
-> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look at the growls)
-> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) and "The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley - get to know the background of this song ahead)
-> Then the new stuff with "Noise" (Video), „Shoemaker“, "Harvest (Lyric Video) ...
    Just my personal thoughts :-)
One thing you can definitely be sure of: Every song is different, has some surprising transitions, is intense. And none of the songs you're going to discover will disappoint you.Floor is one of the most versatile singers from opera over pop and rock towards metal and growls.
    Greetings from Hannover in Germany
