In an interview David did, he said he was worried how his fans would react to the song the first time they played it in their lineup since it's very different from what they usually do, but to his surprise he saw fans waving their cellphones and crying because they were so touched by the song as they were connecting to it. After that it became a "must play" song at every concert they did. Paul Simon actually contacted David and told him that he loved the cover so much that he added it to his social media content. You know you did good when the creator of a musical masterpiece tells you he loves your cover.

I saw an interview he did where he said it was the longest studio time he spent on a song, doing it over and over. And when he came out of the booth he said the look on everyone's faces said he had done a stunning job, so he was very pleased.
It was another band member who suggested doing quieter ballad style and building, rather than their usual approach.

interesting, i always interpreted as: talking w/o speaking: mindless/idle/surface chatter rather than talking about deep/important/etc topics, hearing w/o listening: like in conversation where the other party is just waiting for their turn to speak rather than actually listening to the speaker's words or only listening with half an ear and half your attention or less (like a annoying relative on the phone ranting and you are just making appropriate noise when they pause for breather, but have checked out mentally), the neon gods, that is imo more deifying people (celebrities, mega church pastors, politicians, etc) or groups of people (the ultra rich are to be admired and aped) but your idea of technology also taking over is an good one too.

@@sawyerweathers8713 I've seen some of their videos I like, but I think largely it depends on whether you have an appreciation for that style of music (I call symphonic metal, but I'm sure there are other names). Their singer (whoever she is, and I believe that role has changed at least once) appear to my untrained ear to be quite good, but I, too, would like to hear the analysis of someone with actual vocal training. The bass player also sings (to me, fairly well) and the pair of them in their version of Phantom of the Opera I think are quite good. But, again, if you don't particularly care for their style of music, you're not going to be a rabid fan. So Egor, if you don't like it, that's fine. I definitely don't like everything I've heard.

I happened on this version of The Sounds of Silence by accident, and I was immediately captivated. I have no training or real experience in the vocal arts, but it does not take a genius to understand that this performance is a master work. And I have to hand it to you...I've listened to maybe a dozen vocal coaches "analyze" this rendition of the song...and no one has really paid homage to the artistry on display. While acknowledging the technical aspects of the performance (after all, that is what vocal coaches do...right?), most reviewers have failed to comment on the urgent message these artists (composers/performers) are conveying in such a profound and powerful way.

Seeing so many vocalists almost come to tears listening to David and have to convey what brought them into loving vocals and music just shows how extremely powerful this performance is. It brings everyone down to earth, and reminds them of their passion and love. So on-point to the lyrics that are talking about the human disconnect with digital media.
