1) David was ill that night and had been losing his voice. 2) He had that power in his voice sitting down. 3) He never changed his distance from the mike. 4) His voice is so powerful they were not afraid the drums would overpower him. Instead, they put the drums next to him. David is a badass singer!
David Draiman is a classically-trained cantor who decided to pursue heavy-metal as his vehicle and won the respect/admiration of Paul Simon for his performance of this song.
Not many people know that D.D. was ill during this performance; that's right, he wasn't 100% for Conan. But he felt it was important to do the show........ and still nailed it !!!

i cannot escape the irony that silence is an appropriate response. In my instance followed by hollers, shouts, vigorous clapping and joyous laughter. Maybe that's me being me but I doubt I am alone.
I have watched a lot of reaction videos of the official video and the Conan O'Brian Show video. There have been two or three comments I have seen from people who were in the theater audience that night. Their comments were that the applause and standing ovation went on for about 10 or more minutes. I saw somewhere that this broadcast got the highest response of any other that they have had and with over 800 million views of Disturbed's play that is huge. I am 76 and after seeing the official video last year, I called my younger son, 42, to see what he thought of the video and group because I told him that I had never understood the song when Simon & Garfunkel first sang it but I do understand it after Disturbed's version.
It is not anger but a righteous wrath and rage. The range of Disturbed's version goes from haunting, seeing/feeling, to rage, and finally acceptance. One reactor summed David's voice up perfectly; his voice is a choir, the whole choir.
This version is really a journey. David starts off soft and low, like he's sad. And, then, he's clearly very angry. It really tells the story of, being sad that humans aren't connecting on a personal level anymore, and then being pissed off that nothing has changed. And I think Disturbed's version helps you grasp the story more than Simon and Garfunkel's.
It does help you grasp the story more I think. Not to take away from the original though. That's a beautiful version, but I see your point. You can't help but listen to the last half of that and not choke up, unless you have no soul what so ever. I believe Paul Simon complimented them on this performance specifically. I think he got it too. Given he wrote it...
this is a great performance, but the official vid more dynamically captures the crescendo from beginning to end. Easily one of my top 10 songs/videos of all time right here by someone I never listened to... wierd eh?
I'm from that period of life. The song was written shortly after the death of JFK. Televisions weren't in every home. Personally I love S&G. But I wasn't a fan of this one. But wow. This version is simply worrisome. Come on man.
I can't help but notice that most of the replies to this comment are asking how someone can't be a fan of Disturbed's music, they're by far my favorite band, but people have differing tastes, not everyone's gonna like the same things, and you can absolutely not be a fan of a group or genre and still appreciate and compliment one song, or someone's talent.
This performance takes you on a journey. It starts so soft and so slow, it almost lulls you. As line after line progresses the tempo and the volume start to increase, as if he's wanting to make sure you're paying attention to the lyrics that were powerful when they were first written, and may be even more powerful in the world of today. The emotion in the final verse is revealed in David's trademark rasp, along with the continued crescendo of voice, music and those tympani drums. The song takes you higher and higher, and almost out of the blue, everything drops for the last line. I know that when I first heard this version, I felt like I was flying, to be gently returned to the ground with the final words. The performance left me with a spectrum of emotions that is still hard to explain. I just know I had heard something almost magical, and that I will forever be changed as a result.
I completely agree. I’m 64, the performance is powerfully moving. Took me back to the fear and angst of the 1960s. Music was the soundtrack, the Vietnam War was the backdrop to my childhood, day after day, year after year. Nightly news displayed numbers of dead from each side with corresponding flags. Like following baseball teams and their scores. With each day we grew one day closer to qualifying for the draft. Music provided hope. It countered the message from the government and our parents. In 1968 at age ten I asked my father, a West Point Graduate, if I was going to Vietnam when I grew up. He assured me “The War will be over long before then”. On March 29, 1973, the last U.S. military unit left Vietnam. The War continued until April 30, 1975. Disturbed’s cover gives the song the voice the lyrics deserve. Yes it is an incredible journey. TY.

Last night I heard him sing this song on the radio for the first time. I had never heard of him before. I literally had to stop the car and just sit there and listen. It was as if he was speaking to my soul, bringing back all those times that I have found myself completely alone in a crowd of people, the many times I have turned my collar to the cold and damp. It is all there, tugging at my very soul. This is the way this song was meant to be sung, it waited for him to come along to bring it to life.
The first time I heard this song was on a 9/11 video. I bawled like a baby. I watched it every year on Sept. 11th. I recently found these reaction videos and have watched them several times a day just to see their reactions. It's amazing they all agree, he's a stunning singer.

This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.
From everything I've heard he actually had the flu and couldn't even stand during the performance. Impressive he could do what he did while sitting too.
@@Flashblackyc4 If you really familiarize yourself with his voice, you can hear it, and he looks like his eyes are puffy. He certainly didnt feel well, whether it was cold or flu...? Plus I could hear a little autotune in there in a couple places. He doesnt need it normally.
Everytime I listen to this song, I feel for the loss of innocence, the loss of society, and everything that we've cast aside over the last few decades. While we've made progress, we've lost our souls, we've lost our emotions, and we've lost each other. This song sends me down a dark hall knwoing that the hall is much longer before the light.

This tune IS great. I actually didn't realize this was a cover! I see it is now, but still before me! I'm 58! Have you listen to Sound of Silence covered by Disturbed? Again, maybe more a question of when, both cover, and original? Disturbed doesn't use auto-tune. Neither does Amy Lee of Ev!.
David Draiman comes from an orthodox Jewish family and was classically trained as a cantor. In my opinion, there is no other male vocalist alive whose voice compares with David's on this track. He gives quite simply, an amazing performance here. Sofie, your reaction to this song is exactly the same as mine and probably millions of others on first hearing, and when you see how many people have checked out the official video, you can see how popular this version is around the world. I discovered this version on UA-cam yesterday, I’ve replayed it over 50 times since. It brings out such emotions, it’s haunting, it’s powerful and brought tears to my eyes every time I played it! This morning I’ve listened to it 6 times, I can’t get enough. Amazing live voice!

David Draiman...a voice to die for. A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to vocal fry/distortion and back on a dime. You aren't the only person loving the vocal fry part. Look at the drummer smiling when he lets it loose the first time. "And the people bowed and prayed", Drummer smiling. "To the neon God they made". Another smile by the drummer.
My all time favourite song sung in such a way as to bring the most visceral emotions to bare. God love them for bringing this masterpiece to the world yet again.
A person's first exposure is often their favorite - a book, a film, we often prefer the first version of something that we came into contact with. In this case I spent roughly 40 years loving the original version of this song, yet as soon as I heard this version, it was if the song had been perfected.
I loved both the "official" music video and this live version. However, to hear David had either a cold or the flu during this performance, elevated him as a performer to an entirely new level for me. His range and control while expressing such an emotional story... fantastic performer. Simply phenomenal. Goose bumps several places during his version of this song? Oh yes, and every damn time I hear it! This version has become one of my all time favorite songs.
First time I saw this, I thought. " What the hell have I just heard ? ". How could anyone convey all this in the time it takes to sing one song ? Warmth, rage, confrontation. I cried like a baby, and often still do on hearing it again. It calls me back every time. It's like he looks straight into your soul. Bless you for the music, Mr Draiman. 💕 💕

@@JPVNG67 on one note - and he was angry about the producer using it.
so your're telling me.....he was running....Down with the Sickness?
I think the most impressive thing is that David Draiman had a cold during this performance.
From everything I've heard he actually had the flu and couldn't even stand during the performance. Impressive he could do what he did while sitting too.
How do you know that’s true?
@@Flashblackyc4 If you really familiarize yourself with his voice, you can hear it, and he looks like his eyes are puffy. He certainly didnt feel well, whether it was cold or flu...? Plus I could hear a little autotune in there in a couple places. He doesnt need it normally.
@@cmont1910 David actually didn't like the fact that the producers put the autotune there actually. I think he instructed them not to.
Right and he still killed it!
This version of the song makes it's way into your very soul. I listen to this version when I need to cry enough tears to fully purge myself. David Draiman is incredible and has the voice of a fierce angel !!
If you really need to get the tear ducts going, try IZ`s version of Over the Rainbow.
God: David, would you like the voice of an angel or a demon?
David: Yes
Stolen Comment😂
@@SethM12 Every one of these has the same 3 or 4 stolen comments.
God: And would you like a female counterpart?
David: Sure!
God: introducing Tatiana Shmailyuk from Jinjer.
David: Oh Wah Ah Ah Ah!!!
@@inquisitorMence don't forget the "he was sick that day" or "hes a "trained Cantor" So annoying. Great performance but few mention it was autotuned.
@@inquisitorMence how many people point out that he's sitting through the whole performance - which negatively impacts one's range by restricting the diaphragm range and breathing?
I think most people have had the same reaction to this cover - goosebumps, tears, chills…it’s epic.
This song has been viewed like, literally, 100 million times. This cover is one for the ages. It’s the pinnacle
And the studio version is well on its way to a billion.
Possibly THE BEST cover of anything ever! I'm a huge Ev, and A7X fan love Halestorm and AIC! Seen everyone multiple times. Haven't seen Disturbed but w8ill try when we get vaccinated!
Bobby hatfields unchained melody is the best live cover ever made ,period. This is great but bobby was not auto tuned and has greater range.
@@michaeldbhawker3556 ah, the Conan show version was auto tuned after the performance unbeknownst to the band. Watch the original studio video for his pure vocals.
Apparently, Paul Simon loves this version too, and that's a hell of a compliment.
I’ve lost count of how many time I’ve seen this, especially in reactions, but I still get chills EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Never know what point of the song they’ll hit though. Changes.
Me too!!!
You absolutily nailed that. and Angel and a Demon in his voice perfectly said.. The band is Disturbed and thats what they did to you, they disturbed you... there soooo amazing, David Damian is a opera trained singer.. nice job..
Sofie please watch the official video!! You won't regret it! Love your content! Thank you.
I was about to comment the same thing, I'm not someone who generally listens to Disturbed but a friend played this and I went in search of the video and only one word could describe it: masterpiece
He has been classical trained. He could sing the ABC's and make me cry
I LOVE watching folks react to this song :) For me, this is such an amazingly powerful song that connects with my soul. I grew up with, and loved, the original, but this version!? It brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it... To see someone experience that for the first time is amazing :D
David was trained as a Cantor. That is why he can fully use all the strength of his voice.
What's a Cantor?
@@fgwilli76, a Cantor is a person who sings the Torah during prayer in a Jewish service.
@@lyndacoppenbarger2221 yep - and you know what you are talking about.
@@fgwilli76 Watch the movie "The Jazz Singer", about a cantor who became a star. The story of Neil Diamond, acted by Neil Diamond. It's a brilliant movie.
For me?
You nailed it with just one word
HAUNTING
I am 70 years old
I should not understand a metal singer’s version
But I do
I love it
I can listen to this version forever.
I can’t believe you reacted to this! I’m so happy. I think I have seen ALL the reactions to this. Why am I not surprised this is my favorite one! And yeah to echo what someone said. Love the hair color. Is it just me or did you just start doing the eye makeup flick ups. Love them. Fabulous reaction!
After five years, i still cannot listen to this performance with chills or getting misty eyed.
You aren’t alone. Everyone gets tears at some point in David’s version of this song.
I love how within the first few notes begin you can see the emotion move across her face and eyes. A few more notes and the smile begins! David's voice is probably a once in a generation gift. I don't know how to describe it other than absolutely pure.
If this song don't hit you it means that you've lost all your feelings. Thanks for proofing that you haven't. It's indeed one of the most powerful and emotional songs ever.
Doesn’t* proving*
Those kettle drums hit REALLY hard for me. They carry his amazing voice so perfectly!
This is one of those moments that I always avoided watching because I was afraid I wouldn’t like it as much as disturbed studio version…what a mistake…Davids voice is even more powerful live. Incredible 💜💜
I've heard this tune a thousand times. Not once has it failed to to send shivers down my spine and goosebumps all over my body.
The S&G version is a warning, full of hope and promise...
THIS version is the frustration and anger that the warning was ignored.
I've watched over two dozen vocal coaches watch this. Yours in my opinion is genuine and hit the mark . THANK YOU!!
David Draiman has found the dystopian darkness of the song!
To hell with the song.. Lady you are frickin gorgeous!!
its simple hes acting the words in his voice. incredible
Sofie you look beautiful and loving the change you did with your Hair color looks Awesome. great job with your reaction and analysis of Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence .
This song gives me CHILLS every time I hear it. Every time it comes on my playlist or radio, I have to CRANK IT and FEEL IT!
Loved your reaction. His voice is like a locomotive covered in honey
Brilliant 👍
David Draiman...a voice to die for. A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to vocal fry/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance SoFie. Great job! Try "The Night" by Disturbed too SoFie!
If this song isn't played at my funeral Im not attending!.
Haha, brillant
David's ability to change his voice constantly is what drew me to disturbed. It's showcased in disturbeds first album
Simon and Garfunkel tried to warn us.
Disturbed shows the anger at the warning going unheeded.
The greatest ever, nuf said. This performance of Sound of Silence will never be beat. Number one of all time. I love it, and am waking up to play it again., tears in my eyes every time. I'm 72 years,
I really enjoyed watching you react to this song. Almost everyone who has heard it reacts the same way.
It was such a pleasure to get you fall in love with this song for a second time after having such a connection to the original. Awesome video.
David Draiman totally owned that song!
Bingo she is the first person in at least 20 I've listened to who recognizes his classical training and use of that to express the meaning of the words in this song. This cover is by far 100% better than the original.
Gods Warning to all of us is very strong in this message...David's voice brings emotion to all the words.....You have to hear what the words are saying to your soul......The words of the Prophets are written...Beautiful
The purity in his voice is just amazing. He is incredible!
After this performance, Paul Simon himself messaged David and said "It's your song now."
I can't imagine higher praise than that.
They did for this song what Johnny Cash did for Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt."
Not exactly what he said but it is the gist of it . He definitely gave him his Blessing.
He did not say it’s your song now. He said this version was great, and he loved it. Stop exaggerating.
@@Nls-nj5yw According to an interview with David, that is exactly what Paul said to him.
And since David was the one who actually conversed with him, I'll take his version of the events over yours any day.

performance was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! his voice is both beautiful and haunting.......................the piano touches the soul..............and the bass drum pounding out those two strikes shakes the body and the orchestra is perfect background for the whole song and you are adorable
he was trained as a cantor in his father synagogue, then in college took some music but was studying for something else and left to sing in a band but not this one at first . then audition for this job and got it. at first he didd not make a good match , but as we see, it worked out great
The feeling your getting is rage encapsulated in sadness. Of course the two go hand in hand. His range captures it perfectly throughout the song. Absolutely stunning cover and absolutely stunning voice.
