It should be noted that Paul Simon himself came out and said this rendition is phenomenal. When the original comes out and gives you props, you're good.

I don't think it's physically possible not to have some sort of emotional response to this version of this song. It's so guttural. It's so angry. And it's so emotionally charged
I agree, but it actually starts out sad for the first part, semi-optimistic when his pitch goes up for a refrain (and the lyrics reflect trying to help people see the problem) and ending at the point where the lyrics go "hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you", and angry when he gets to the lyric about his words falling like silent raindrops (no one listening/on deaf ears), and then gets even angrier in the next lines when speaking of people praying to the neon gods they made. The lyrics are actually setup in an interesting way where it should sound like this. It is actually quite strange that Simon and Garfunkel had such a consistent, even keel high pitch voice through the whole song.
In 1966, the divisions were a quiet thunder on the horizon. Now, 2023, we are under more extreme stress of falling apart as a nation. The differences are as Beth said. I read this rendition as regret that we are at war, but it is time to fight for dialog, as well as guarding our own safety and rights.

Is that because of me or is it the song? I have heard this version at least 20 times and each time I can not hold back the tears. Damn, I'm a 50 year old man and I cry like a little baby. That's not normal.
I bet it's way more common than you'd think, just not commonly talked about on your age range, and the fact that now you can hear it pretty much whenever you want makes you experience it more often than what you have grown up to expect. The song that hits me like a ton of bricks it's called "Con la frente marchita" (With [a, or my] withered forehead) as sang by Adriana Varela and a line goes, roughly translated by me, like "There's no worst longing than to miss what never happened". If you have lost a young one, the tone it self, and if you speak Spanish the lyrics, will bring to you all that never was, but could, and is indeed a strange and strong longing.
you aren’t the only one brother, i grew up listening to metal, most of the singers have a song in this style, but no one has the impact like david here, the performance was a 10/10

The story behind the song is wonderful....TArt Garfunkle went to Columbia in New York. He met a guy named Sanford Greenberg who loved music and literature like Garfunkle and they became great friends and soon roommates. One day Greenberg was at a baseball game and his eyes started failing on him. Soon he was completely blind. Greenberg quit school and went home and fell into a great depression. Garfunkle visited him often trying to convince him to get back to Columbia. Garfunkel told Greenberg to call him "Darkness" in sympathy. With a great deal of help from Art, Sanford did come back to Columbia. Garfunkel helped him to class, filled our forms and papers, etc. One day Garfunkle took Greenberg to Grand Central Station (10,000 people, maybe more.) Garfunkel told Greenberg he forgot he had to be somewhere and up and left him there to find his own way home (over streets of cobblestone...) Greemberg found the right train and in his mind he saw the graffiti on the subway walls. Greenberg finally made it back and bumped into someone who said, "sorry." Greenberg recognized Garfunkel's voice. Garfunkel was with him all the way home. Greenberg got his confidence back, went back to school and when Garfunkle needed money to get his first record cut, Greenberg gave him his last $400. Wiith that Sound of Silence was published. Sanford Greenberg went on to Harvard and Oxford and became a wealthy businessman.
Had this song played at my wifes funeral last September. She absolutely loved this. Every time I hear it it brings a lump to my throat, and a tear to my eye. Beautiful 😢❤️

What a hauntingly beautiful rendition of the Sound of Silence. David has made this song his own. Thank you Beth for your cogent review of this classic.
I MUST say I actually enjoy watching your incredible reaction to this song more than the song itself! I love the way I can see how you truly FEEL and are in such awe of this beautiful song! Truly, a beautiful reaction!
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.
He seems to constantly raise the tension with his voice until it's almost cracking and then brings you down gently. A wonderful version of an outstanding song.
Disturbed ia my favorite band, but i have to disagree, first i think david is little softer live, thats not a bad thing, but after his surgery for his acid reflux started damaging his voice, he is very soft in the distortion. Second, i think that kinda adds to the charm, they are good enough live, but not perfect to the point, they add a little new component to the mix, and you can see they respect each other a lot in stage, david always makes the croud cheer while dan plays a solo. So, my point is that, they are not the same live, they are similar enough to make it good, but simpler enough to make it fresh. As an addition, if you dont mind heavier music, listen to gojira live, they are by far the best live performers i know.
@@pascaletje9 that's a fair point, i disagree and i think its actually very understandable, touching even, but if your tastes don't coincide with that its okay, to each your own :D.
i love that you recognize not only the clarity of tone and "correct" sound, but also the visceral quality of the "rough" sound. people usually don't recognize that it's not just a throaty growl.. i love singing this song,, and i'm subscribing!
THANK YOU for finally being adequately impressed when Draiman sings "To the neon god they made." I can now close the rest of my tabs of vocal teachers being confused by Draiman and go back to procrastinating in peace.

Troll farm is out in large but!!! You nailed it even Jim Morrison said People Are Strange and he did Acid for a sport lol
How do you not have millions of views/subscribers? You are utterly charming and informative.
she is pretty too. he he
Cant hear this song enough times. That man means every word! Love his anger that we haven't yet listened.
Critics: «Metal singers can’t sing this stuff!» *David Draiman: «Hold my rasp!»*
Its almost divine hearing a person talking the way you talk about music. Thank you
The emotions coming out this performance kick you right in the face. Best cover I ever listen to
I also love the Hurt cover that Johnny Cash did.
I agree. It gives me the chills. Best cover I have ever heard
Beth I believe they won the Grammy this year for best live television performance because of this cover
This version with David singing, is a gift to the world (with all props to Simon&Garfunkle for the song's creation)
David Draiman has the most godlike vocals i’ve ever heard.
But not now... His voice is... Awful
I am old and hate most remakes I heard the original in 71 but this knocked me out !!
If you like this song, do yourself a favor and listen to it very LOUD, on a high quality system that has good bass tones. His amazing voice, with those huge kettledrums will blow you away!
That's the only way to listen to disturbed period 😁
Or skull candy headphones. That works to
And with earbuds. You gotta be immersed in it with no background noise!
@@TwiStedTentom I actually prefer my over the ears headphones for good full range listening. I have a pair of Superlux HD668Bs that are semi open backed, and do your standard low end very well. I love my ear buds for isolation and very loud listening, but there just isn't enough room in the ear canal for those low, full notes to bloom and resonate.
@@purple_amethyst skull candy? I can't take this seriously.
His voice is AMAZING!
Agreed Patty
Great vocals
Hell yea David Draiman has a legendary voice in my personal opinion. Tho he was irked that the did tune his voice a little
Thats the versatility of a Metal artist🤘🤘🤘
The fact he's sitting down as well.. He sings it like it's nothing but natural!
David of Disturbed, He was full of flu that night, but still producing a masterful performance! Creating tears if you work the words and official video, Ian from U.K. ❤
His voice got me...the crazy thing is, he is sick here and still manages a wicked performance...I prefer the video version bc he does his aggressive vocals with more power...he kinda holds back on this version, but at any rate, I am a total fan of the guys..❤❤
So sad, so beautiful, so strong, so artistic.... It's a deep grave of sadness... I love it... 😢😍
Beth, besides the music being absolutely awesome and moving, watching you and your 'feel' for the music, was spectacular - thank you
The story behind the song is wonderful....TArt Garfunkle went to Columbia in New York.
Wow thank you so much for sharing that incredible story
Thank you
If one lets IT...the music fills ...touches...and heals..each of our weary hearts...without fail or fault- finding ..
I understand he was sick when he performed? Still powerful, moving, great.
And still told the production team to f-off with autotune. That is 100% David
@@jacebralor I thought there was a tiny bit of it in this performance, which he didn't approve of
@@flyingrobotpig auto tune David Draiman?! blasphemy!
@@andreasbernardi3654 yes, it's very noticeable. He's a great singer, but you can hear the auto tune artifacts a few times in this performance
@@jacebralor he was tricked into using auto tune because he was sick.....he got mad lol
I’m really glad she’s watching the live performance. It’s better than the album recording.
Agree completely. I ended up ripping the audio from that UA-cam video and saving that to my personal collection.
I'm trying to hear the sound of silence but i got disturbed! 😁😁😁
We all are disturbed
LOL
Haha...good
My brothers,my sisters,my blood!!
Badum tss
One of the greatest renditions of this song ever done. This man is blessed to sing this good.
Had this song played at my wifes funeral last September. She absolutely loved this. Every time I hear it it brings a lump to my throat, and a tear to my eye. Beautiful 😢❤️
Played it at my husband's funeral, too. Not a dry eye anywhere.. ..he was 53.
@@merileehanson8434 My wife was only 50. Sorry for your loss Merilee x
Was it expected? My husband had Huntington's Disease, a surprise to us even though it's hereditary, his dad was a severe alcoholic and died from that , so we didnt know. Never heard of it until diagnosis. We were together since I was 16.....34 years at his death in 12/2018. 6 years caregiving, 2 boys. Both gene positive. The ONLY way I get through it is with my religion. The peace that surpasses all understanding. I hope you can feel peaceful, my friend.
When I go for walks, sometimes I put that song on a loop, plug in my earbuds...and just feel. Oh, and sing outloud! Badly! F everyone else!
@@merileehanson8434 No, it wasn't expected at all. She was complaining of pain in her neck, which they thought was a blocked salivary gland. By the time they realised that it was a tumour wrapped around the carotid artery, it was too late. She spent 3 weeks in a hospice before she died. It was devastating to see her decline so quickly. Stay strong lovely. x
Back at you. Greetings from central Florida, USA. Peace be with you. I did grief counseling, and am ok.
I read that he was having throat problems before going on stage, yet he still pulled this off. It's AMAZING!!!
This is one of those songs that always make me sweat a bit around my eyes...
so wonderful when you were moved, the very same time i was. my god this man has some pipes.
What a hauntingly beautiful rendition of the Sound of Silence. David has made this song his own. Thank you Beth for your cogent review of this classic.
He was also running 102-103 fever with flu like symptoms during this (which is why he's sitting; he couldn't stand).
I can't help but to sing along when ever I hear him sing this.❣
Paul Simon actually said that Draimon brought something new to that song and improved on the original version.
I had a chance to hear them live a couple years ago and just wow. There's no autotune on his voice. That's him. David Draimen is amazing.
Disturbed is one of the few bands, in my opinion, that sound the exact same live compared to the album itself
@@hw_yozoraVODS How can music that isn't even understandable in the studio, be good live
@@pascaletje9 that's a fair point, i disagree and i think its actually very understandable, touching even, but if your tastes don't coincide with that its okay, to each your own :D.
Dave Mathews Band, I swear, there’s literally no difference in quality from their studio to their live performances
I think we all have a religious experience from this performance.
God is dead...
i love that you recognize not only the clarity of tone and "correct" sound, but also the visceral quality of the "rough" sound. people usually don't recognize that it's not just a throaty growl.. i love singing this song,, and i'm subscribing!
Thank you for subscribing!
When was the last time that a song and the vocalist made your eyes tear and moved your soul in ways you can't describe? JUST NOW.
THANK YOU for finally being adequately impressed when Draiman sings "To the neon god they made." I can now close the rest of my tabs of vocal teachers being confused by Draiman and go back to procrastinating in peace.
The Charismatic Voice reaction is well worth a watch. One of those reactions where even when she wasn't speaking you could tell exactly what she thought of the song!
It isn't unusual to get a frisson response from a good piece of music. However, so far this is the ONLY one of which I am aware to just cause me to have wave after wave of goosebumps. Absolutely perfect.
I just love your emotion during this song. You truly love music, and it shows. Great explanation as well.
his voice still brings a tear to my eyes no matter how many times i listen
I would like to see you listening to music from my country (Brazil), music from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's. Brazilian culture is sensational, and we had singers who still make an impact and are missed. Thank you for providing wonderful moments in your videos.
