She has even expressed some regret that she didn't listen more to the "extreme" music - whatever that was for any given time period.
I'll never forget one of the many times I've seen Disturbed live. David stopped his set and refused to play until the mostly male crowd stop groping the women who were crowd surfing. Spent a good five minutes telling them what disgusting pigs they were. Never experienced another artist who commented openly on very common practice for the day. Mad respect for him plus his angelic voice.
I’ve been to many gigs over the years and always get involved if there’s a chance to crowd surf. I get groped, touched sometimes hit and slapped etc…. I’m a man, women can be just as handsy as men, probably worse to be honest because their aloud to be. You won’t hear me complaining because honestly I’ve got a life and that 10 seconds isn’t going to affect the rest of my day. Sometimes when you’re holding someone up in the crowd it’s hard to see where your grabbing/pushing the crowd surfer. If you don’t want to risk it don’t do it but don’t complain like a little snowflake get on with your life

You don't seem to get that people are different and not all are carbon copies of you. Quit listening to the lyrics and just hear the vocal sounds and understand that that's one man without autotune basically issuing a challenge to every person who has ever considered themselves a good singer with broad range. Whether you like his music or not, he is one of the most talented vocalists to ever exist.

Considering David was sick with the flu, fever of 103 during this show. He's sitting down because he didn't have the strength to stand. This man is legend. Absolutely one of the best voices today. Trained as a cantor. Can you tell I love David Draiman?

I agree mine passed at 46 from heart and lung issues. The the weekends were the darkness time for me . We spent time together did chores,shopping,gardening, Loved being together. After he passed the loneliness set in i would tear up just seeing couples Hug or hold hands as we did most of the time. I was loved and knew it he put me first. My heart was broken. The nights were long slept very little . The empty bed no cuddles . I felt isolated from this world. . Having our bond in faith is what kept me going. Believing I was going to get through that time knowing that was what he wanted me to do as we had 3 teenagers who still depended on me to be strong. By God's grace we made it. And for anyone going through that difficult time,you will too.
You need to listen to the bands own video. David had flu when he sang this, his own video knocks spots off this one. It makes grown men cry. This song was about the lack of communication when TV became popular, (and the people bowed down and prayed to the neon God they made). When David sent it to Paul Simon, he was very nervous. Paul said my version was a warning, your version is the rage because the warning was ignored, it's your song now. Now that's the highest of compliments.

Side note...he was actually sick when he sang this that night on Conon. He is a phenomenal singer that sounds just as good live as he does recorded. He is the epitome of never judge a book by it cover, hands down the nicest guy ever, and multi talented.
He really is a great guy. My brother has met him a few times and he always stops to have a conversation with him. On top of his phenomenal vocal technique, him being a great guy makes me love him even more lol
Well you can hear its autotune. And that makes me sad cuz David was doing such a good performance that he didnt need it. Not sure how they ended up using autotune.
The thing that impresses me the most about this cover is how absolutely intentional it is. Loud to soft, low to high, clear to rasp all lend to what the song is trying to say at any particular time.
Someone else in the comments noted that it was said that S&G's version was a warning of things to come, and Disturbed's version was an expression of anger because we did not heed the warning. So absolutely 100% every single thing he does in this cover is intentional to showcase that emotional statement.

He is also auto tuned a LOT in this performance which is a huge shame because his voice is absolutely phenomenal and his power is earth-shattering. The tuning ruins this version for me 🙁

Absolutely agree. It's like Simon and Garfunkel minted a coin, but left the other side blank. Disturbed came stamped that blank absolutely perfectly. One side, a sad lament and warning of society's decay, the other a cold rage against that warning being ignored.
I’m classically trained cellist. He can turn that pure tonal depth on and off across his harmonic range! This is the perfect example of genre hiding absolute incredible raw pure talent! Just love him!
David is classically trained. He is also well educated. His writing is 🔥. If you read the lyrics to his songs, you'll see the religious references informed by his traditional Jewish upbringing.

I' was a big disturbed fan back when down with the sickness came out..but the choir nerd in me loves real singing like ths... and a comment said he was sick this nite like the flu and 102 temp.. and I can see subtle shifts in the big notes to compensate...but the official version shows his full ability.. those vibrating bass notes that send chills to that upper register effortlessly and powerfully belting the crescendo of song (I think that's the correct term,but the fireworks after the build up that will lead to a softening backing off to end a musical piece) ..I never knew he had that kinda ability. I never thought a genre bending cover would ever top Johnny cash's nine inch nails cover of 'hurt'.. but vocally, well,the league's arent the same(johnny was emotion and lyrics and music and delivery and deep dark notes unheard of in radio music, and his cover was perfect, emotionally so perfectly worded for his life and loss of his wife as he said his final goodbye to his fans, music, and the world to be reunited with his love.. I cant comprehend that it's a metal cover still, bc that song was made for his delivery of it.. a final bow that I cant name a single example that comes close to competing with... and obviously this isnt a final word for disturbed.. but the cover you never saw coming.. and the dark depth and just emotional connection that makes it hard to remember they didn't write it..that its not their biological creation of a musical offspring.. main stream has so few true examples of true vocal ability, even where it exists, it no longer sells.. the dumbing down of vocal talent ..esp from a man, let alone a rocker who dabbled in sceamo vibes... I hope he writes a ballad that shows this sorta range and ability one day so he can get the credit and respect he deserves for our generation,just vocally.. I lived during Simon and Garfunkel period and it was beautiful then. Now I’m 68 yrs. old and am very thankful I’m alive to experience this version. It is even better by Disturbed.

You should hear this LIVE. I saw them perform it when it was still new and the huge crowd was...well....SI-LENT.....to the last hint of sound. THEN the place EXPLODED! It was the thrill of a lifetime!
RIGHT I watched them live in 2018 and just. Holy shit. You could just feel the electricity during the silence during this piece, even after it had been out. The audience didn’t sing with him, and just. The chills.
As a fan of Simon and Garfunkel's original and I am a child of the sixties, this has got to be one of the most incredible renditions of this song I've ever heard. The man is singing with his heart.
I too heard this song the night it was performed on Conan -- I cried so hard as I was so moved by this version- always loved the S&G original version having heard it hundreds of times- but had I been standing- I would have fell to my knees in my weeping over David's presentation - and the orchestra was an excellent addition

Simon straight up said, that this is not our song anymore, and openly admitted, that this is exactly what they originally wanted the song to be like. Straight up the best cover ever made of a song. For me that has been a fan of Disturbed since 2008 with Indestructible, it was the first song since Darkness from Believe of 2002, that really took this kind of acoustic approach, and showed David's incredible range in a more calm way. Disturbed is such an amazing band, and David is easily in top five of best vocalists of the 21st century.

Conan actually said when he was finished the entire crowd was stunned. Absolutely flabbergasted at the performance. Some were crying, others were speechless.
It actually was digitally enhanced slightly. Dave was incredibly pissed (this is apparently a huge understatement) about it afterward, as he specifically told them NOT to do that.

I played this music video for my elderly dad and his buddies in assisted living. They are all late 80's and early 90's and were expecting Simon & Garfunkel. Those old men loved the Disturbed cover. Now when I go back to visit them they always ask me to bring more Disturbed for them to watch and listen to. The lesson is never judge a book by its cover. Great music is great music, period.
Having been a diehard Disturbed fan since I first heard Stupified in 2000, supporting them for over two decades, seeing all of the critics either crap on or ignore them to now seeing everyone blown away by not only David’s phenomenal vocals but Dans arrangements, I feel validated and so proud of them.

David draiman studied for years to be a cantor, so he didn’t just open his mouth a d gold came out. He worked hard. He’s a really intelligent and very well-rounded musician/vocalist. I mean, he is a real singer, and understands his voice and how to use good technique (including the mic) to create a real experience.
No he didn't lol he wasn't a trained cantor nor was his father and grandfather go watch an actual interview with him his dad ran a mental health facility. And he had no real training until well after disturbeds second album....
I liked when he mentioned country. Next frame commentary. He said going to stop talking and play the rests the remake gives me the chills amazing vocals and powerful. Love it

When Paul Simon heard this version he told Disturbed the song was now theirs. Also, David was sick when he did this performance. As far as his abilities he was classically trained and being trained as a Cantor as his father and grandfather before him.

David Draiman is one of the most underrated vocalists of our time. By far. Simon and Garfunkel can take all the credit for the lyrics but unfortunately Draiman and Disturbed have them beat at it everywhere else. David Draiman doesn’t get nearly enough credit or praise for his vocals, and that goes for everything he sings not just this.
I liked the performance but Simon and Garfunkel still is the best. It has a naturalness that here is lacking. He re is a performance. In Simon it is like a moment of life.
His mouth should have been agape from the Auto-Tune slaughter. Instead we're treated to 13 minutes of a guy who is a self-described professional, but yet has no clue that he's listening to a computer-processed voice.
Art Garfunkel sent a personal thank you to the band on the release of this song because he was so amazed by their version. David Draiman is one of the best singers alive in my opinion, regardless of musical category. He also trained as a Jewish cantor so definitely no country 😂😂
The first time I ever heard it was on the radio when it first came out. I had visible chill bumps up and down both arms. There’s no volume too high to listen to this song. It still gives me chills. My husband was really resistant to listening to it bc of S&G, but once he heard it, he was sold.
Honestly, their version of this song gives me chills EVERY time I hear it. Especially this particular live performance of it. I've probably heard it 100 times and I still get the goosebumps. I think if the preliminary bias like you felt wasn't there, this could have been very popular. Pentatonix does a very good job as well but this one is on another level. Thanks for reacting to it Ken. as a singer myself, I am just blown away constantly by all of the different levels and shading and tones he uses throughout this song. It's like five different people are singing this, and it's all just one amazing man.
Disturbed's rendition on Conan is going to go down in history as one of those timeless, iconic performances in history, like McCartney's Hey Jude on SNL and Queen's performance at Live Aid. People will be watching it and doing this version Karaoke in 40 years.
Several years ago my mother actually played this for me and I could not believe what I heard. She is a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan so I was quite surprised that she would play something from a band I'd never even heard of. I absolutely love this version and it is absolutely outstanding! And my neighbors within the radius of a 500 W sound system knows the song that I play practically every weekend when I'm out on the pavilion. Hat's off to one of the greatest renditions of a song ever made!
Ok Ken....thank you for opening my mind and my ears. I had asked my daughter a while ago if she had heard The Sound of Silence. She said no and proceeded to pull up this cover. I immediately said nope...there is no way anyone can compare to Simon and Garfunkel’s version. I stand corrected....this version is amazing. I will be a lot more open minded from now on. Thank you!
If you'd like to hear a version that is much closer to the original, check out Peter Hollins and Tim Faust covering this same song. The Disturbed version is probably my favorite, but Peter and Tim proved a beautiful and haunting rendition, while honoring Simon and Garfunkel.
I can recommend another cover of a different song. That would be, Nightwish - High Hopes. I never thought I could recommend a "cover" of Pink Floyd. Nightwish never considered it a cover, but rather a tribute.

You're definitely not crazy thinking the 2nd verse has a country feel. I think each verse nods at a different musical genre. Folk in 1, with just the piano, country in 2 as the guitar & strings join, opera in 3 as the rest of the orchestra start to play and David opens up on the vowels and really starts adding power, and metal in 4 as the strings get more complex and the timpani reverberates like a battle drum, while we hear that gravelly rage in the vocals. If you've seen the official video you'll know how important music is portrayed as being for its own sake. It's literally a stunning arrangement of an already beautiful song, leaving listeners speechless and covered in goosebumps.
Inasmuch as I love the original Simon & Garfunkel "Sound of Silence", and always will, I must say that Disturbed gave the song a new depth of life that no other rendition has ever come close to duplicating. My absolute favorite version.
Mine, too. I can't listen to Simon and Garfunkel's version anymore because it's too "happy." Disturbed put a dark, mysterious and prophetic vibe to it that I love.
When my daughter was 3 months old she was having an unbearable wailing fit in the back seat on a road trip. When this song came on she immediately stopped crying and calmed down as the song progressed. As a long time Disturbed fan, it gave me chills. But I don’t blame her, it is a fantastic version of the song and it has a similar effect on me. 🙃
OMG! I'm 65 years old and I love this version. I loved the original also, as I was a young person when it came out and sang it in my junior high chorus. This version is so very powerful. It can be about our world today.

60 here and have an extreme dislike for remakes in general. This one knocks it out of the ballpark. I will give this high praise indeed by saying that I believe it is better than the original classic by Simon & Garfunkel. This one has so much emotion and sucks you into the emotions of the song far better than the original did. I have heard other remakes of this song that are mediocre at best and utter crap at the worst. Great job Disturbed!
So, story goes David had a cold for this performance. His "team" applied an autotune to part of this performance that he didn't know about. He was pissed. This dude has an amazing voice.
So, David is an absolutely underrated singer. Yes, his band has been in the metal genre for decades. However, he has an incredible range and vibrato. Early in his life he had surgery on his vocal cords. Also, like others here have said, during this performance, David had the flu. Unbelievable performance even with the slight auto tune. I personally prefer the studio version to this live performance, but that’s just me.
Look for concert footage of him singing this with myles kennedy. There are a couple with good audio quality, so you might have to search a little. But its worth it if you find one of the good ones.
I was thinking the same thing. He was good here, but his other live late night performance was definitely better. Can't remember which late night show it was. But here, he actually sounded a little "late" in a few parts. But he was very good.
I really love it when people come to the realization that hard rock/metal singers have more depth in their voices than they are ever given credit for and when they cover an iconic song, they usually take it to a much higher level than the original.
Disturbed is a band for emotions. Even tho they might sound hard at first, their songs are all pretty powerful when you listen closely. The emotions leads this band, what makes them so incredible. Davids versatile voice made their music one of the most influential and emotional important music in my life.
I love seeing vocal coaches reacting to this version of this song. They are almost always blown away by David Draiman’s vocal techniques. As soon as I saw you had done this video I knew it was going to be a good one!
this guy's little idiosyncratic outbursts are hilarious. Seen them in a number of videos. Always something different and always catches me off guard. But "Holy Hermione Grainger" was one of my new favorites now.
This song touches me so much. I used to sing but, cancer damaged my throat and I can't sing anymore but, the feelings are still there. David has the most amazing voice.

David Draiman has such an amazing range and a beautiful voice. I love Disturbed but I was skeptical when they released this version. I'm a purest and usually dislike song remakes. I'm a big Simon & Garfunkel fan and this song especially was a favorite of mine. When I heard this version, I was blown away. Every time I hear it, I get goosebumps and tears well in my eyes. This version of the song is the best one I've ever heard.
Watch the video of this song where they do the 9/11 tribute it will most definitely make you cry. And I saw Simon & Garfunkel in Central Park it was a free concert they did and it was totally worth it and yes I love their music a lot as well, but this song now is a Disturbed song to me now

@@wendyc1902 It's a mediocre cover version and the TV show performance was a lazy Auto-Tune schlock job. But Paul Simon doesn't mind because for older artists, the royalties become smaller and smaller. Cover versions get the publishing royalties flowing for the song itself, and jumpstarts the royalties for the older stuff by introducing young people to all of Simon's other stuff they're not familiar with.

Did Simon and Garfunkel get it right, the first time? Absolutely! But Disturbed's version is ALSO very right! He adds a fierceness that gives the song a subtly different feel than the original, especially on "to the neon god they'd made". Both are amazing.

I'll never forget one of the many times I've seen Disturbed live. David stopped his set and refused to play until the mostly male crowd stop groping the women who were crowd surfing. Spent a good five minutes telling them what disgusting pigs they were. Never experienced another artist who commented openly on very common practice for the day. Mad respect for him plus his angelic voice.
I’ve been to many gigs over the years and always get involved if there’s a chance to crowd surf. I get groped, touched sometimes hit and slapped etc…. I’m a man, women can be just as handsy as men, probably worse to be honest because their aloud to be. You won’t hear me complaining because honestly I’ve got a life and that 10 seconds isn’t going to affect the rest of my day. Sometimes when you’re holding someone up in the crowd it’s hard to see where your grabbing/pushing the crowd surfer. If you don’t want to risk it don’t do it but don’t complain like a little snowflake get on with your life

You need to listen to the bands own video. David had flu when he sang this, his own video knocks spots off this one. It makes grown men cry. This song was about the lack of communication when TV became popular, (and the people bowed down and prayed to the neon God they made). When David sent it to Paul Simon, he was very nervous. Paul said my version was a warning, your version is the rage because the warning was ignored, it's your song now. Now that's the highest of compliments.

The thing that impresses me the most about this cover is how absolutely intentional it is. Loud to soft, low to high, clear to rasp all lend to what the song is trying to say at any particular time.
Someone else in the comments noted that it was said that S&G's version was a warning of things to come, and Disturbed's version was an expression of anger because we did not heed the warning. So absolutely 100% every single thing he does in this cover is intentional to showcase that emotional statement.

Absolutely agree. It's like Simon and Garfunkel minted a coin, but left the other side blank. Disturbed came stamped that blank absolutely perfectly. One side, a sad lament and warning of society's decay, the other a cold rage against that warning being ignored.
I’m classically trained cellist. He can turn that pure tonal depth on and off across his harmonic range! This is the perfect example of genre hiding absolute incredible raw pure talent! Just love him!

Former Cellist here, and the first time I heard this amazing rendition, all I could think is that his baritone register has a very cello-esque resonance to it.

I' was a big disturbed fan back when down with the sickness came out..but the choir nerd in me loves real singing like ths... and a comment said he was sick this nite like the flu and 102 temp.. and I can see subtle shifts in the big notes to compensate...but the official version shows his full ability.. those vibrating bass notes that send chills to that upper register effortlessly and powerfully belting the crescendo of song (I think that's the correct term,but the fireworks after the build up that will lead to a softening backing off to end a musical piece) ..I never knew he had that kinda ability. I never thought a genre bending cover would ever top Johnny cash's nine inch nails cover of 'hurt'.. but vocally, well,the league's arent the same(johnny was emotion and lyrics and music and delivery and deep dark notes unheard of in radio music, and his cover was perfect, emotionally so perfectly worded for his life and loss of his wife as he said his final goodbye to his fans, music, and the world to be reunited with his love.. I cant comprehend that it's a metal cover still, bc that song was made for his delivery of it.. a final bow that I cant name a single example that comes close to competing with... and obviously this isnt a final word for disturbed.. but the cover you never saw coming.. and the dark depth and just emotional connection that makes it hard to remember they didn't write it..that its not their biological creation of a musical offspring.. main stream has so few true examples of true vocal ability, even where it exists, it no longer sells.. the dumbing down of vocal talent ..esp from a man, let alone a rocker who dabbled in sceamo vibes... I hope he writes a ballad that shows this sorta range and ability one day so he can get the credit and respect he deserves for our generation,just vocally.. Simon straight up said, that this is not our song anymore, and openly admitted, that this is exactly what they originally wanted the song to be like. Straight up the best cover ever made of a song. For me that has been a fan of Disturbed since 2008 with Indestructible, it was the first song since Darkness from Believe of 2002, that really took this kind of acoustic approach, and showed David's incredible range in a more calm way. Disturbed is such an amazing band, and David is easily in top five of best vocalists of the 21st century.

I played this music video for my elderly dad and his buddies in assisted living. They are all late 80's and early 90's and were expecting Simon & Garfunkel. Those old men loved the Disturbed cover. Now when I go back to visit them they always ask me to bring more Disturbed for them to watch and listen to. The lesson is never judge a book by its cover. Great music is great music, period.

Having been a diehard Disturbed fan since I first heard Stupified in 2000, supporting them for over two decades, seeing all of the critics either crap on or ignore them to now seeing everyone blown away by not only David’s phenomenal vocals but Dans arrangements, I feel validated and so proud of them.

David draiman studied for years to be a cantor, so he didn’t just open his mouth a d gold came out. He worked hard. He’s a really intelligent and very well-rounded musician/vocalist.
I mean, he is a real singer, and understands his voice and how to use good technique (including the mic) to create a real experience.
No he didn't lol he wasn't a trained cantor nor was his father and grandfather go watch an actual interview with him his dad ran a mental health facility. And he had no real training until well after disturbeds second album....
I liked when he mentioned country. Next frame commentary. He said going to stop talking and play the rests the remake gives me the chills amazing vocals and powerful. Love it
It was so neat to see someone converted to a new way of thinking and being totally humble, apologetic and honest.

Also, David was sick when he did this performance. As far as his abilities he was classically trained and being trained as a Cantor as his father and grandfather before him.

Paul Simon once said that he doesn’t ever listen to covers of this song but he was talked into it for this…and loved it!
Simon went even further. He loved it so much that he eventually told David and the band themselves that it's their song now.

David Draiman is one of the most underrated vocalists of our time. By far. Simon and Garfunkel can take all the credit for the lyrics but unfortunately Draiman and Disturbed have them beat at it everywhere else. David Draiman doesn’t get nearly enough credit or praise for his vocals, and that goes for everything he sings not just this.
I firmly believe that David’s voice has magical healing powers.

I liked the performance but Simon and Garfunkel still is the best. It has a naturalness that here is lacking. He re is a performance. In Simon it is like a moment of life.
I've known of Disturbed but never heard anything by them until this song. No other words to say except WOW. Talented guy right there.

Art Garfunkel sent a personal thank you to the band on the release of this song because he was so amazed by their version. David Draiman is one of the best singers alive in my opinion, regardless of musical category. He also trained as a Jewish cantor so definitely no country 😂😂

The first time I ever heard it was on the radio when it first came out. I had visible chill bumps up and down both arms. There’s no volume too high to listen to this song. It still gives me chills. My husband was really resistant to listening to it bc of S&G, but once he heard it, he was sold.

Honestly, their version of this song gives me chills EVERY time I hear it. Especially this particular live performance of it. I've probably heard it 100 times and I still get the goosebumps. I think if the preliminary bias like you felt wasn't there, this could have been very popular. Pentatonix does a very good job as well but this one is on another level. Thanks for reacting to it Ken. as a singer myself, I am just blown away constantly by all of the different levels and shading and tones he uses throughout this song. It's like five different people are singing this, and it's all just one amazing man.
Disturbed's rendition on Conan is going to go down in history as one of those timeless, iconic performances in history, like McCartney's Hey Jude on SNL and Queen's performance at Live Aid. People will be watching it and doing this version Karaoke in 40 years.

Several years ago my mother actually played this for me and I could not believe what I heard. She is a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan so I was quite surprised that she would play something from a band I'd never even heard of. I absolutely love this version and it is absolutely outstanding! And my neighbors within the radius of a 500 W sound system knows the song that I play practically every weekend when I'm out on the pavilion. Hat's off to one of the greatest renditions of a song ever made!
Ok Ken....thank you for opening my mind and my ears. I had asked my daughter a while ago if she had heard The Sound of Silence. She said no and proceeded to pull up this cover. I immediately said nope...there is no way anyone can compare to Simon and Garfunkel’s version. I stand corrected....this version is amazing. I will be a lot more open minded from now on. Thank you!
If you'd like to hear a version that is much closer to the original, check out Peter Hollins and Tim Faust covering this same song. The Disturbed version is probably my favorite, but Peter and Tim proved a beautiful and haunting rendition, while honoring Simon and Garfunkel.

I can recommend another cover of a different song. That would be, Nightwish - High Hopes. I never thought I could recommend a "cover" of Pink Floyd. Nightwish never considered it a cover, but rather a tribute.

No matter how many times i hear Disturbed version of "sound of silence" I'm never bored of it or disapointed...it was so different to their normal music...maybe try reacting to some of their heavier stuff :P
You're definitely not crazy thinking the 2nd verse has a country feel. I think each verse nods at a different musical genre. Folk in 1, with just the piano, country in 2 as the guitar & strings join, opera in 3 as the rest of the orchestra start to play and David opens up on the vowels and really starts adding power, and metal in 4 as the strings get more complex and the timpani reverberates like a battle drum, while we hear that gravelly rage in the vocals. If you've seen the official video you'll know how important music is portrayed as being for its own sake. It's literally a stunning arrangement of an already beautiful song, leaving listeners speechless and covered in goosebumps.

Inasmuch as I love the original Simon & Garfunkel "Sound of Silence", and always will, I must say that Disturbed gave the song a new depth of life that no other rendition has ever come close to duplicating.

Mine, too. I can't listen to Simon and Garfunkel's version anymore because it's too "happy." Disturbed put a dark, mysterious and prophetic vibe to it that I love.
When my daughter was 3 months old she was having an unbearable wailing fit in the back seat on a road trip. When this song came on she immediately stopped crying and calmed down as the song progressed. As a long time Disturbed fan, it gave me chills. But I don’t blame her, it is a fantastic version of the song and it has a similar effect on me. 🙃

OMG! I'm 65 years old and I love this version. I loved the original also, as I was a young person when it came out and sang it in my junior high chorus. This version is so very powerful. It can be about our world today.

I will give this high praise indeed by saying that I believe it is better than the original classic by Simon & Garfunkel. So, story goes David had a cold for this performance. His "team" applied an autotune to part of this performance that he didn't know about. He was pissed. This dude has an amazing voice.

So, David is an absolutely underrated singer. Yes, his band has been in the metal genre for decades. However, he has an incredible range and vibrato. Early in his life he had surgery on his vocal cords. Also, like others here have said, during this performance, David had the flu. Unbelievable performance even with the slight auto tune. I personally prefer the studio version to this live performance, but that’s just me.
Look for concert footage of him singing this with myles kennedy. There are a couple with good audio quality, so you might have to search a little. But its worth it if you find one of the good ones.
I was thinking the same thing. He was good here, but his other live late night performance was definitely better. Can't remember which late night show it was. But here, he actually sounded a little "late" in a few parts. But he was very good.

I've watched this hundreds of times and it still touches my soul every time...
I really love it when people come to the realization that hard rock/metal singers have more depth in their voices than they are ever given credit for and when they cover an iconic song, they usually take it to a much higher level than the original.
People think of metal as just screaming but it's not. It takes a lot power and vocal strength to do what singers like David Draiman do.

Disturbed is a band for emotions. Even tho they might sound hard at first, their songs are all pretty powerful when you listen closely. The emotions leads this band, what makes them so incredible. Davids versatile voice made their music one of the most influential and emotional important music in my life.
I love seeing vocal coaches reacting to this version of this song. They are almost always blown away by David Draiman’s vocal techniques. As soon as I saw you had done this video I knew it was going to be a good one!

David Draiman has such an amazing range and a beautiful voice. I love Disturbed but I was skeptical when they released this version. I'm a purest and usually dislike song remakes. I'm a big Simon & Garfunkel fan and this song especially was a favorite of mine. When I heard this version, I was blown away. Every time I hear it, I get goosebumps and tears well in my eyes. This version of the song is the best one I've ever heard.
Watch the video of this song where they do the 9/11 tribute it will most definitely make you cry. And I saw Simon & Garfunkel in Central Park it was a free concert they did and it was totally worth it and yes I love their music a lot as well, but this song now is a Disturbed song to me now

@@wendyc1902 It's a mediocre cover version and the TV show performance was a lazy Auto-Tune schlock job. But Paul Simon doesn't mind because for older artists, the royalties become smaller and smaller. Cover versions get the publishing royalties flowing for the song itself, and jumpstarts the royalties for the older stuff by introducing young people to all of Simon's other stuff they're not familiar with.

Did Simon and Garfunkel get it right, the first time? Absolutely! But Disturbed's version is ALSO very right! He adds a fierceness that gives the song a subtly different feel than the original, especially on "to the neon god they'd made". Both are amazing.
