If you're a woman who's been kidnapped, or in any other kind of danger, and you manage to get to a cellphone, the logical thing to do is call a random number and then leave a message saying "please help me" without giving any other information. Under no circumstances should you try to call 911.

The part where you were talking about the voicemail with the crying immediately made me feel chills and remember when I was a freshman in High School (a little over 10 years ago) I got a voicemail and when I listened to it, it was just a girl crying and saying "please help me"
I think about that voicemail every now and then and still get the same chills.
I would have went to the police or at least googled the number.

Here in Brazil this kind of calls happen all the time - you pick up and a crying person says "Dad?? I need help." (as I'm a dude - my wife picks up and they start with "Mom") which is weird because we don't have kids so I just laugh and tell them to try another number. Usually they just hang up but sometimes they engage with me and we share a laugh.
If you actually fall for it, they usually ask for money and give you a bank account to transfer some money to.
It's so damn common that even older folks, like my mother-in-law, already know about it and so she gets her jollies stringing the folks along chatting with them for a while before hanging up.

My best friend got a call from a random number and ignored it, but then got a voice mail of a woman screaming on the other side. I'll never forget the chills I got when she sent me the message and asking me what to do. I told her it was a scam and to definitely not call them back lmao.
There's a particularly horrofying story about scam calls in my family. Important context: My mom's family lives in the opposite side of the state. So, there's this very well known scam call tactic of pretending to have a loved one captive, demanding a large sum of money for ransom. One night they called my grandma, telling her that they had kidnapped my mom. They knew all the family details and my grandma swears, she heard my mom's voice. It was so believable for her. They told her to not call the police, not tell anyone, just deposit the money otherwise...
My grandma was scared and almost fell for it. Like, imagine your daughter living far away, only coming to visit once a year and then they call you in the middle of the night saying all that... Yeah, there's no limits for scam calls, lemme tell you.

This happened to my grandfather too a few months ago!! To be honest the entire ordeal has left me really freaked out answering calls in general because when he came to pick me up he was already in the middle of the call, so I had no idea who he was talking to, and when he tried telling me to call my grandma the man on the other end immediately began to interrogate him on who he was talking to, where he was, and then went on to threaten me. I should've reacted better, but I had no idea what was going on at the time. He was so panicked and wouldn't listen when I signaled for him to hang up, even when I showed him my mom's texts that they were safe at home, he didn't register it because he was so scared. It wasn't until we got home and my mom was fine that I finally found out what happened, and I'm honestly so mad. He claims he heard my mom's voice on the other end pleading for help, and then the man came in to say my mom saw something she shouldn't have, so they needed my grandpa to deposit a large sum of money for her life. It's so stupid, but this just gave me an added layer of fear towards ever getting involved with the wrong crowd - that fear I felt in the car not knowing if I was safe was awful :/ I don't think I would've been afraid if I'd listened from the beginning, but man. Scammers are vile
It makes me wonder how they even get access to your voice to use to extort money from your relatives. Like idk the process of managing to get a replica of your voice which makes this both freaky and interesting.
I can't tell what's worse between this and the AI voice scams where they train a model on your voice then use it on your relatives to extort money.

This is some hard psychological abuse these people are pulling, the average person especially youth shouldn't ever have to see extreme violence like that and they're using that as a way to put fear into people and get them scared enough to pay money. This sort of thing shouldn't be taken lightly at all in our society, those doing it should spend time in jail/prison honestly.

Some anonymous number kept repeatingly sending me links to very wild prnographic material, typically involving incense and parent/step-sibling type stuff with all this deviant activity. I'd block them and they'd return again. I don't know what their motive was whatsoever, but in some of these situations it could be something similar where it's some sick person just trying to shock and scare random people.

I’m living one rn. Though my family and I aren’t scared really. We’ve gotten mysterious voicemails with a voice saying that they know where we live, and threatening to stalk my mother.
The voicemail sounds like some teenager, trying to be creepy. Though they do know my mother and I’s names. My brother just received a strange text from an unknown number. All it said was just, “bye.”
The main lead to who it could be would be a client’s kid who was kicked out of a summer program that my mom works for. He’s known to be schizophrenic and a potential narcissist who’s been raising hell with the other employees and kids. Of course, the parents aren’t giving him professional help.
Though, I don’t know how he had gotten my name.

my step grandmother has been receiving very strange and threatening messages from random numbers including pictures of her apartment. my step dad tells her it’s just a scam and not to engage but I’m not sure. sending pictures of your literal home seems like a genuine threat. I think she should take it to authorities. I’m wondering if it’s her ex husband antagonizing her. he abruptly divorced her and has been going through some kind of mental break. he’s gotten into alcohol abuse as well. she’s been very torn up about it and it’s all she talks about and these random messages have just been adding onto her stress. does anyone have experience with something similar or know if it’s actually a scam?

This is a sign that you should get the authorities involved. Most scams involve in saying your name or just casual threats, but they rarely do the latter of sending photos of your actual home and such.

About 3 years ago, I received a call and it began with a woman asking for help with some hints of sobbing. They were speaking in Spanish but I understood them. She was saying something along the words “You need to speak with these guys please.” Then I hear a man telling me in Spanish, “Send the money or you’ll be responsible for this woman’s death.”
I, who just woke up to answer this call, answered with a groggy tone “What?”. I think they expected me to say more than just that because there was awkward silence after that. They mumbled to each other (man and woman) and they hung up.
If I wasn’t half asleep, I surely would’ve fallen for it and continued talking on the phone. I didn’t get any of those threatening calls ever since that one.

I had something similar. A gew years back I got an email with my information like full name, ect. and it threatened to expose my porn activities. As no one, including myself, gives a shit about my gooning I ignored it.
Reasons why I stopped posting photos of myself and family in the past 5 yrs. My boss had gotten a call one day about his own self being abducted and was held on ransom. He laughed at them because he was the one they supposedly kidnapped they didn't do a good job with their homework and thought it was the Sr not Jr. Don't post anything you won't feel comfortable posting online

You can always forward information videos like these ones or news reports to them!
In addition to informing them, you can also set up a code phrase or something to ease their mind, so they feel more prepared if someone tries to tell them you're in danger. Or just encourage them to report the call and let the caller know they're doing so.
Always remind them to never be afraid to ask a question about anything. My mom will always call me about anything she is unsure of day or night. Anyone tries anything with her will get me instead and I'm always up to waste someone's time.
You should always inform your parents about recent scam tactics to them regardless of how they’ll respond.
Also if this were to happen, make sure you both have a codename, word, or phrase. Make it where both you and the parents don’t say “if this is you say this” or something similar to those lines to said scammers.
I haven’t gotten these, but I’m glad I informed my parents so at least we’ll know what to do.

I contacted the police about it but they said they couldn't do anything about it since I was in Pennsylvania and the number the pictures were sent from was traced to Oregon.

I unfortunately was the scary unknown caller for one poor guy a couple years back. I had mistook one of the digits in my friend's phone and called the number a couple times bc I was confused why they weren't answering my text messages as they had said they were ready to call on Hangouts.
I simply sent another text confirming it where i said, "When call? OwO" and i had asked "[Friends name]?" A few minutes later. Then the person finally called back and started begging for me to please leave them alone.
I was so confused at first until I realized what happened and i explained to them i mistook their number for my friend's. For their sanity's sake, i hope their name wasn't the same as my friend's because that would have been even creepier for them
Hate to tell you this scare, but most guys who get escorts are not guys who find it difficult to hook-up otherwise. I used to drive independent escorts to johns. Most of these are normal, or good, looking guys who have quite a bit of disposable income. To them paying for an escort is no different than buying alcohol and some coke to party with.
