- Last episode Marty was working on the MR2 which turns out to be not quite as clean as he first thought. Almost every bolt was seized or rusted, and while the body itself is in reasonable condition just about everything attached to it doesn't work. This episode the fuel tank tank needs to be removed and new coolant hoses installed throughout the car. The MR2 slowly but surely being restored to it's former glory but there's still a lot of work left to do.

Yup, welcome to what the rest of the world deals with at 2-10 years old (make dependent) ......that 30 year old car is in sooo much nicer condition (to work on) than anything I've seen a dacade old outside of a breif stint in Nevada
We get it.
I've spent the afternoon getting the downpipes off of a 14 year old VFR 800.
The whole job, every nut/bolt/washer/screw battled me.
I ended up with hammers/chisels and a grinder to complete the job, which feels like incompetence and failure.
New exhaust studs needed/orderd, a thorough clean up and perhaps it'll all go back together politely.....but I'm not holding my breath on that.
Still, locked down so plenty of time to do it right.

yeah, I dont think all these parts had to me replaced. watching troubleshooting is more interesting than just chucking only new parts into this rust bucket ..
@@salsarriba5695 They generally do it because they're replacing the ECU anyway, so they give themselves breathing room for upgrades.

Yep! I did a full tear-down of a super rusty '92 Subaru for parts. The thing had sat in 4ft of snow for like 3 winters, the entire underside was a truly incredible amount of rust. It was very, very, not fun.
100% confirmed.
But definitely not normal in Aus, where there’s no snow (apart from the tops of a couple mountains) and most of the country isn’t coastal. This thing has had a seriously rough life, perhaps stored under a tarp which trapped moisture in
3 to 5 year old cars in Norway.
Unless you live on Vancouver Island or the Lower Mainland.

I love how hes like I cant believe how us guys in countrys with salt and snow do it 🤣🤣🤣. Here in eastern Canada that MR2 would be considered clean and rust free!
Same up in Norway. That would be considered a mint example almost.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you both for doing what you do. During these stressful times your content seems to be a good reliever of stress and anxiety. When Marty dropped the fuel tank then sat in the chair and gave the MR2 the finger I laughed so hard I forgot about things for a minute. Best MCM episode ever. Is it weird that I enjoyed Marty struggling through the whole thing? It felt like literally every time I work on any car ever.
Man, having a lift is such a life-saver. he gets more done on his car than i do on mine in a year.
I agree the lift is a KEY part of owning an mr2. Can't even get a jack under mine.
You can do it with multiple floor jacks and an engine hoist
well... that, and probably has more time than you.
About 15 years ago i did some work experience at a workshop that specialised in mr2's.
Thanks for reminding me why i didnt continue on with a mechanics apprenticeship after that.

@@roddydykes7053 it was actually the regular cars that turned me off. Doing a service on neglected 300000 km pieces of junk where everything breaks as soon as you touch it really bugged me.
Lol heaps of room in the MR2 bay to work on, even with a V6 turbo stuffed in mine I haven't had any issues. MCM got a shitbox of a 2 though.

Buy one from Texas through Southern California. Mine only has rust on the exhaust manifold and turbine housing. Every bolt comes off easy. I’ve never hit this car with PB Blaster in 30 years.

I was in tears laughing when Marty broke the fuel tank strap while trying to get in the new tank. Then the light gets f'ed and I was done. Haha. Such a tragic relationship!

most of the mr2 was hand built. There's photos of the production line out there.
The tank is probably the second thing to be bolted to the body after the headlamp housings.
No wait, nevermind, they didn't start making the headlamp assemblies part of the structure of the fenders, bumpers, front transmission mount and lower windshield until recently. So the tank was the first thing.

@@dutchtrublemaker Yeah, in comparison. I have an A60 FR Carina, and with exception of carburetor vacuum lines it's a breeze to work on. I also have an A70 mkIII Supra with 7M-GTE swap and... Let's say a bit more difficult.

This is actually one of the best episodes ever! That dejection and just fail on fail on fail is just hilarious! So on the next episode we will see when they shipped a turbo for a bus and Marty just loses it. (Hey its a turbo just another one, You get a $5 discount!)
I feel like you get to a point where the subframe just has to be dropped with the engine on it
I am a complete newb and can have the whole motor dropped start to finish in ~4hrs. It's not too hard. It makes dropping the tank and doing all the turbo nonsense MUCH easier. Totally worth it if you're diving in this deep.
I had a Mark 1 MR2, every few minutes watching this I repeat out loud "drop out the engine and do it properly". I can only presume that this is deliberate for entertainment value. One other thing, the car was superb, years later I had a lift in an Elise, made me so nostalgic for the MR2.
He stated in a previous video that he does not want to drop the engine unless absolutely necessary

Marty, I feel for you. I’ve spent the last three days replacing the serpentine belt and tensioning pulls and alternator in a Chevrolet g20 van. And I’m in Canada, it’s snowing, it’s my daily driver, I’m working in my driveway, and I just found out my parts supplier sent the wrong size belt. Oh and it’s a 1988, and if you thought things rusted in Montreal, well, try calgary alberta.
The supposed two piece fan shroud was stapled and welded together, every fastener took two days and 5 sprays of ‘deep creep’ penetrating spray, and oh my god I want to find a GM engineer from the mid eighties and beat them to death with a sack full of idler pulleys.
So yeah, brothers in arms Marty, brothers in arms...
It’s not fighting me anymore, MR2 decides to fight back even harder.
The best part of this video: you are showing the struggles of working on the vehicle, not just the edited successes. I'm over watching "how to's" and things of that nature that make everything look so easy and not help answer the pains that everyone in encounters. Nice vid!
Hey Marty, quick tip for rusty-ish fasteners - if you can get it to turn a little bit, pretend you're tapping a hole. Back it out until it feels like it doesn't want to come out, then tighten till it gets easier again. Rinse and repeat until it comes out. Works for some, and saves you the trouble of drilling every single one out.

This was my favorite episode of Mighty Car Mods because it's the crap that I deal with almost everyday it's funny but super stressful at the same time

LOL that fuel pump assembly looks just as bad as the one I pulled out of my AW11! My tank didn't have a drain bung though, so you're lucky. Plus I did slave for hours to clean my tank out, had no choice. This car was really lucky to come to you! You're fixing it up proud, Martin!

Coming from someone who just rebuilt their MR2 from scratch I feel every pain that you feel.
Probably the best series yet as this is what working on a project car is really like
As an MR2 owner and enthusiast i love that Marty is experiencing all of these common problems, even down to the threaded and rusted bolts near the turbo.
On thing marty, remove the interior trim that covers the seatbelt mechanism and look down the hole into the sill, there is usually a piece of sound deadening foam that falls down and rots the sill from the inside out, also check behind the boot carpet for rust on the arches, very common issues with these mr2's
This car feels like old school MCM. I wish Moog would be a part of it.

You get to remove the entire rear suspension cradle on a CTS-V to get the tank out.
My fiero got turned into a trike the gas tank was a. Was an extra air tank off a semi truck held 10 gallons.

Lived in Minnesota all my life, can totally relate to that feeling of having a mouth full of rusty grit after some wrenching. Got smart with our newer cars and coat them to the eyeballs with lanolin wax every fall.

Respect! It's nice to see you messing with the rusty bits we deal with. Not that you've had it easy...we all know you guys have worked hard. But here in the rust belt of Iowa, we struggle with this rusty crud every time we change a tie rod, every time we change a ball joint. Without WD40 and a torch, we'd be lost. Love it, I had a 77 Fiat X19, 86 Fiero GT and then finally an 87 MR2 (1 Gen NA) throughout my teens in the 90's - always wanted the Turbo'd Gen 2 Mr2 but it wa out of reach then...and now out of reach as well :( ... but I loved those 'cheap' exotics back then. Thanks for the trip on this one.

Fuel spill ( gush out ) = cleaning the floor after. Hence now we have a clean floor.
Petrol/Gasoline is the original de-greaser (kind of hard on the hands though.)
I think he ment fuel generally is used to clean parts and crap so he spilt fuel and was like eh tudah clean. Mop it up and its good

The fact Marty never swore once well fighting the Mr2 shows man has some strong patience
When i had one the backs of my knee's used to get really sore/overstretchd beause its a long reach over the rear quarters into the bay. Mine used to fry the diode pack on the alternator. Turns out a bad main connection on the fuse box. Was causing spikes and that was the problem. Wish it was still on my drive for sure. Never swapped ends but did have it sideways.
When they blurred the middle finger ( i mean his fist ) i felt that, lmao cars man.

I had a Toyota gt4 of the same vintage. Clutch pedal broke off the mount and one of the shifter linkage cables snapped. Considering the corrosion you've already dealt with take a look at the welds on the pedal box and for corrosion on the shifter cables. The gt4 I owned had very minimal rust but the pedal box had extremely thin and spotty welds, the shifter cables also looked fine but under the boots on the transmission side had quite a bit of rust.

If it's rusty when it comes out you either replace it with stainless or clean it up, then use enough anti-seize that it won't be an issue next time.

Have you ever worked on cars that drove on salt?
At some point the anti-seize it's just useless, you have to heat the screws and often you just know that the screw will break.
@@ulukai_555 also welding nuts to bolts that you snapped the head off from because you were lazy and didn't feel like heating it

Mate it’s funny you mention working on cars in countries with snow and salt. I feel you. I’ve owned 4 older hondas to date. I’m not an educated mechanic, but I’ve managed to learn a lot of stuff thanks to a friend of mine. In Poland, the rust makes it hopeless. The bolts get stuck, penetrating fluid is a must. Sometimes you happen to rip off a nut head. We used to weld nuts onto the broken bolt to unscrew it numerous times. Stay positive and keep up the good work!
