- First drive in 5 years! It's clear now that the JDM MR2 stands no chance against the mighty Moog Buggy. In this episode we take it for the first drive after over 5 years in storage (and it absolutely rips!) But before we hit the battle pad, it needs brakes, a tune and some final mods in preparation for the challenges.
Meanwhile Marty is working on his MR2 but probably has worked out by now that his rust infested Toyota stands now chance against the mighty Carby fuelled VW Beetle from the 1970s.

Isaac really needs to be given this buggy. He's nursed it back to life with real enthusiasm and skills. He deserves it rather than it being wrecked or something worse.

I love the way Issac explains everything. It's clear, it's concise and you know it's well thought out. Also, the way he speaks with little to no "umms" is pretty awesome and helps with understanding him. Keep up the awesome work!

It would be mean to send even the Civic through an auto car wash :')
*J-turn 1/8th mile challenge:* Start the wrong direction, have to do a J-turn before finishing, but can be at any point before the finish. Be it at the start, right before the finish line, just as long as it is done.

@@devyn10111 I'm not so sure, turbo vs non-turbo. I've got a 2L turbo and a 1.5L twin carb, and the turbo uses way more fuel when you put the boot into it.
Which can do the least laps, with 10L of fuel?
@@devyn10111 Yeah if it was an efficiency drive rather than a a full throttle thrash I'd probably put my money on the MR2, EFI just helps so much for part throttle cruising.

Drift Challenge: Who can hold the longest slide, both cars built for the complete opposite so will be interesting.
This was the first thing that came to my mind too. This will really test how well these cars have been set up if they can hold a drift.
Challenge: Go to your local track, have a control time set by the Stig……...oh wait, wrong series...….

Challenge: Any challenge that involves reversing 😂
Moog just calling up mates to help with the build. "so yeah what do you need me to do", "take your shoes off mate i need you to foot the stub axle"
The reason we use brake parts cleaner on brakes and NOT throttle body and carb cleaner, is because throttle body and carb cleaner has lubricants in it, which do not help with your braking. I am have been an ASE Certified Mechanic for 26 years and that is one of the items that was told to us very specifically in the brakes class as a do not use anything but brake parts cleaner. It is acetone and propellant and nothing more. I enjoy all of your shows, please keep up the good work.
When torquing down those hubs... I learned to torque them up tight and then back off a quarter of a turn...
So after this battle are you going to fall in love with the buggy and de-modify it back to looking like a super beetle before painting it blue and promptly blowing it up on the track?

“I took out the lockout plate so now we have reverse, but we could possibly hit reverse after shifting from first but it shouldn’t be a problem, SHOULDN’T BE.” This just foreshadowed Moog or Marty slamming it into reverse and blowing the gear box during the challenge.
Whenever you see a second hand come into frame, you know it's only a matter of time before there's a foot.

"Challenge": Just race for bragging rights. This whole "the winner gets the others car" is lame. Marty likes that Mr2 and Moog likes the buggy.
To be fair its not anywhere near the first time they've done something this, it's just been a while.
Marty also liked his Blue Turd yet it was still crushed in a similar but higher stakes bet.

now the beetle buggy is rare and an oldtimer while there are plenty banged up MR2s around.

Lamster66 if it is a decent 3S-GTE that will be the least of your concerns. Watching the progress on the MR2 it is more likely to be big chunks of rust.

Lamster66 Unless it can’t get traction, with all that power in a light body. And anything that requires steering leans heavily to the mr2.

From experience, disk brakes on a beetle are nice, but you'd better put some weight over them or they'll just lock up and you'll slide forwards with no control.
Happened to me once or twice. A heavy tool box under the bonnet helped a lot.
He talked about the front brake rotors being "original," took me a moment to realize how that's possible. In the US Super Beetles were equipped stock with drums all around for some reason, though front discs are a popular (arguably necessary) upgrade. Australia I've heard they were discs from the factory.
all the superbug series in oz had front discs from memory.
@@gazza116 Yeah that's what I've heard, but they came with smaller engines (or at least it was an option), 1200 if I remember right, while in the US all Supers came with the 1600 - yet worse brakes. I always wonder why US spec Supers didn't have disc brakes, I'd consider them to be pretty much mandatory. I'd encourage it as the #1 must-do mod, even justify it to the Purists by saying that they did have them in other countries so they are "original."

Challenge: Moon Surface Exploration - Some sort of rough terrain race! Put Toyota rally heritage against VW space age offroading
Interesting concept being that the Moogbuggy is definitely a time traveling Sherylnator and the Pi-r-2 can orbit planet Yoda and back!

as a airhead (aircooled vdub petrol head) you get my vote! can you go to a officially test track where they test new car models of being street legal, doing a hill climb, a drive over bumps, testing brakes and so on and so on, or what about a road trip, drive to cape trip (or if you brave aka crazy cape york) in a few days and do a ozzie camp. you make absolute beautifull movies of japan, but don't forget you live in a beautiful country to!
For a challenge: I think making one challenge as a sort of road rally would be amazing. Both cars have the opportunity to do really well, without favoring one too much. Also, since both are...not FWD, it harkens back to group B rally racing and RWD rallies from the 80's.
I've built many beetle engines, this looks like a 2.1L which at most makes 170hp vs a JDM turbo MR2. Looks like Marty's getting a moon buggy
170 is a fair bit for 2.1L with dual carbs but, it's still not going to be that competitive with a fuel injected and turbocharged engine of a similar size. Especially in terms of torque.
Stock they said it the Toyota had over 200hp so... with the update and new turbo what? +30-40hp at the wheels??
@ I think moog said it was actually fairly heavy.
If the Moog Buggy was lightened, sure,... But all that checker-plate, even if it's Aluminium, it might even mass more then stock. MaRty2 has got this.
It's going to be almost entirely down to what the challenges are. In sand, gravel or khanacross? This has the advantage, motorkhana would be a 50/50. Around a race track? No chance.
It's all going to come down to power to weight ratio. I bet the buggy weighs a lot less than the MR2 but depending on the challenges it's hard to predict the outcome.
This thing has grown on me I am a Vw guy but took some growing. Not sure about the trailer board for light clusters however. It probably won’t win. Great video 👍🏼

The buggy is much less aerodynamic than the mr2 and the mr2 has more power as well. Of course the mr2 is heavier but just look at Bugatti and koenigsegg.
I mean sure, I love when they build and race cars but this 5:25 is the true reason I watch #entertainment!!!!!!
