The last time I watched this movie it was on vhs. It looks Absolutely gorgeous in 4k.

I remember somebody telling me that the audio on the laser disc was fantastic. I actually have it in my collection believe it or not
Was one of the first ever THX mastered releases so it was made to impress if you have the American NTSC release. The Pal one wasn't so lucky

I can't believe there are still people claiming this has been scrubbed and ruined. Purely from the underwater footage you can tell the original intent is preserved. Wanting this to be bad is wild to me. I loved this release.
I honesty cannot believe it myself Leigh. I thought it looked absolutely phenomenal. It gave me everything that I wanted and more. Even the Dolby Atmos is phenomenal. I couldn't be more happier than I am right now. Thank you as always for stopping by
@millerman9991 it's one thing that these puritans don't like it, but they're literally frothing at the mouth over it. Some going into incredible technical detail about how much they hate it and why they think it looks terrible, while telling everyone they shouldn't buy it.
If one doesn't like it, or dislikes the process they went through, that's OK. Each to their own, of course, but to hate it so much they have to spread that hate, tell people they're wrong for liking it or that we're idiots for liking/buying them, and that we 'don't understand film' is just insane... yet that's many of these 'purists' are doing all over social media...
It's madness
I'm definitely not a fan of heavy or excessive grain, yet all labels use a certain amount of DNR and AI on certain titles to a degree, lest the grain levels be too great. It's just not obvious.
They all use various forms of sharpening, grain reduction and all manner of image processing to a certain degree. Their claims of the purity of certain releases are false.
I think people have an issue with Cameron because he's been so totally focused on Avatar for the past 10+ years and it's not without merit because he has let his catalogue titles languish for so long and they truly deserved better but now they're here The Abyss and Aliens are absolutely stunning.
@@Boyer316 maybe - I mean, I watch 4ks all the time which I find disappointing to a certain degree, I don't get angry about it and get up on my soapbox and publicly denounce the film, the director and demand no-one buy it...etc...craziness
I was able to take the sticker off without a problem.
Happy days. I have been given a few tips to remove them and I'm gonna try and do it today. There an eye sore
@@millerman9991 just take your time and remove gently and slowly. It likely will leave glue residue. I find gently tapping the residue with the sticky side of the sticker gradually removes it as the residue sticks to the sticker rather than the slip.

I watched The Equalizer 3 for the first time today. Loved it 👍
I have to tell you Chris the equaliser is one fantastic trilogy and no one ever seems to talk about them. I actually thought the third one was the worst of the three but take nothing away from it it's still phenomenal. I think it was advertised as being the last one but I have a funny feeling we're going to see more. Denzel seems to like that role. The opening sequence to that movie is brutal
The 1st still stands out as the best, but I enjoyed 2 and 3 equally. Like you say, they sit quietly under the radar, and don't shout about how good they are. I checked on-line to see about a 4th installment, and very mixed articles regarding yes/no for another movie, and whether Denzel will be back too. Hopefully yes yes yes 🤞
Yeah like I said I remember the movie being advertised as being the last equalizer movie but there's something about Denzel demeanor that tells me he might come back again. I never get sick of them and I absolutely agree with you the first one is the best of the three. I have to admit though the ending of part 2 I thought was brilliant.

Hi, great reviews on The Abyss, True lies and Aliens, can't wait to purchase all three, please would to let me know where you imported the Abyss from, the 4k version of the Abyss is region free, but the blue ray discs are region coded outside the UK, how would you manage to watch these blue ray discs, that are in the Abyss, ultimate edition, especially if its a USA import, looking forward to your next reviews.

Great review! Finally someone who talks about the height channels. It’s always something I want know, yet none of the youtubers talk about it specifically.
A lot of people think it's gimmicky but I absolutely don't. It adds a great sense of immersion and I can only imagine what my sound system would be like if it wasn't there. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and check it out
I totally agree! Changes the entire viewing experience if you have a proper atmos setup. First thing I look for on the back of disc haha. Unfortunately as I’m based in Australia The Abyss won’t be released here so it’s hard to track down at a decent price.
Yeah apparently it's going for crazy money on eBay and I really hope the scalpers don't get their money. I think people just need to be somewhat patient and just wait for that restock. You never want to overspend

I saw this theatrically in '89. It was a print, so there was more grain than from a negative scan but I have this one now on 4K and it does not look like the theatrical version, and I hate to say that I don't like that. I want to see films in their original form, warts and all. This one removes the grain--there is what looks like very minor grain in the background but I'm not convinced it's not digital noise. I wish Cameron would leave his films alone and acknowledge they were shot on film.
Yeah like I said in the video purists won't enjoy what they see here when it comes to this transfer. I think if James Cameron had the means back then chances are he would have shot them the way they look on this 4K release. I almost treat this 4K release as a new experience and it's probably why it feels like I'm watching the movie for the first time. That alone is a gift in itself. But I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get the experience that I got out of it. But thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on it. I really appreciate it

As you know I'm know waiting on my Europe 4k disc , but the 4k digi copy I bought absolutely blew me away! My jaw was firmly on the deck! Biggest upgrade I've ever seen , been into home theater for over 30 years, this blew my mind. Keep up the good work my friend 👌.

Honestly Alan I could not believe how good that movie looks on 4k. I actually had both on side by side the Blu-ray and the 4K and it's very obvious at times the upgrade particularly when it comes to Dolby Vision. I think you'll be impressed

Great review Sir, & rightly so & you expressed positives & a slight gripe for the release of "The Abyss" for sure its going to be a import that many of us will be trying to purchase as there"s no UK release of it now.
Long awaited this release has been, even though i had the Stinky Tuna blu ray version of it which was watchable you still have to have the proper approved release especially knowing the man himself James Cameron gave the thumbs up for a 4K release of it.
Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts as always on this release, great work 👍 & totally agree that Ed Harris is such a underrated actor.
Hey Carlos. This was a no-brainer for myself because I didn't pick up The Bootleg Blu-ray release so chances are I was always getting a monumental upgrade. I just didn't realize how monumental it was going to be. The movie has never looked this good and it was great to finally revisit it but not only revisit it but to see it in a brand new light and that's exactly what I got with this 4K release. Like Aliens, I thought this looks beautiful on 4K, a great transfer for a great movie, Keith. I love the Special Edition of this movie, it's the one I always watch out of the two versions. A nice review Keith, once again I'm happy you put the viewers minds at rest with this transfer.
Much like aliens Gary I could only ever watch the special edition. Could you imagine watching both of them movies in the original theatrical form. Saw an advance copy so yeah I'm happy. My only quibble is the actual discs being 'stacked' but I always keep spare 1,2,3 and 4 disc 4K cases handy when that happens.
I actually have to agree with you on that aswell Gary. Very lazy. I'm not a big fan of it myself. It can actually cause some damage

Everyone is viewing these on different TVs, screens so will be subjective depending on how they relate to each screen.
I couldn't agree more with you. Everybody's equipment is different. Some people have them professionally calibrated as well that's another thing to bear in mind.
I watched this at a movie theater back in the day, watching it in 4k is like watching a whole new movie all over again.

Its many years now since i seen this on dvd and glad to know the picture and sound are a massive improvement. I also forgot how long a film it was. Im always a fan of films in deep sea or deep space. It reminds me we need a 4k of underwater aswell.
I completely forgot about that movie underwater. I think I remember enjoying it when I first seen it. I might actually give it a watch this weekend and refresh my memory on it. @millerman9991 Big fan of Lovecraftian and deep sea, haven't seen it since the cinema. I keep thinking it has to get a 4k release anytime I think to rewatch it. And the meg 2 was the last thing I've seen in deep sea so I want to rectify that soon.
@fourlights I remember a movie back in the late 80s early 90s called deep star six. I remember enjoying that at the time as well.

Well, what can I say that you haven't already said. I only had time to jump through a few chapters, but what an amazing picture!!! Afterwards, I put on my old special edition dvd for comparison 😮👌 no contest. I'll be watching the whole thing over the long weekend.
Like I said in the video Mark this one was and bit of a no-brainer because we only had that DVD Edition and even if the 4K transfer was at its worst it still would have been a marked improvement over that DVD. Well if you enjoy your 4Ks looking modern then trust me when I say you are going to be absolutely gobsmacked when you see aliens and the Abyss. If I'm completely honest True Lies is definitely the worst of the three so I wouldn't blame you for holding off for now. But I hope and I really do mean this that you get as much out of them as I did. I had an absolute blast and I honestly cannot wait to sit down and watch them again. I don't know about yourself but when I hear about the Terminator getting a cinema release and I'm presuming it's the 4K releases it kind of gets my hopes up for the physical release of it because of it's good enough for cinema then it's going to be great for us at home. I ordered my The Abyss 4K copy from Amazon and I just received it last week. I haven't watched it yet since yesterday was Alien Day and I've been busy. My only other copy of The Abyss is on Laserdisc in THX Letterbox which was done very well. Let's see if the 4k with Atmos blows me away. Good review Keith!

I met Ed Harris years ago in Cork when he was touring his monodrama Wrecks. Very humble guy and also very talented to remember 1.5 hour long monologue. That being said, I've never actually seen this movie although I'd heard of it before. I normally don't blind-buy but upon checking the reviews I thought I'd get it in 4k. Then I saw the prices on ebay and decided to download it from torrents first (60 GB in 4K) and wait until the price drops as it always does (I've just bought Midnight Run in 4K from Amazon US for £20 when it was over £30 upon release last year). Damn those scalpers. It's not even a limited edition!

@@millerman9991 it's mostly the same as the French releases. Most times its a French/Belgium/Dutch release. But I notice that with new re- releases like Lawrence of Arabia and the Guns of Navarone steelbooks that it's a Dutch and Scandinavian release.

Keith, Your review was spot on and I truly enjoyed Aliens in its new format, some scenes were just incredible and the Atmos exceptional!!! I did notice some “ soap opera” effect in some scenes but only a few seconds long is never a hindrance. I’m glad I took your advice and added one of my all time favorite Sci-fi’s to the collection. I guess I’ll be waiting for Black Friday for The Abyss 🥲😂 But it was aired here on a HD channel and it must be the new version as it looked great. Sony No Balony when it comes to viewing. Nice review! I love this movie to death and enjoyed the hell out of the new 4K transfer. I know I’m most likely in the minority but it’s my favorite Cameron movie. The only thing that still looks good on the DVD set are the fun interactive menu’s. :)
I wouldn't say you're in the minority because a lot of my friends think this is his best movie as well. In terms of performance's I think this is his best and that's saying a lot coming from me who absolutely loves aliens and all the performances in that. Glad you were able to get a copy of it despite the National Socalist censorship of the UK. I could almost forgive the video nasties ban as some of those film were so bad it's almost Disney Star Wars level. But anyone I've always loved this film as Cameron seems or seemed to have the same interests as myself. I don't know if I could actually do the abyss though I have a fear of just being over the Marianas let alone going to into Challenger Deep.
It's ridiculous to think that this movie is not being allowed to get a release over here but yet when you see some of the video nasties from the 80s that are getting not only releases over here but deluxe editions. Love this movie and this 4K looks absolutely gorgeous! Whenever I watch one of James Cameron's films like the Abyss, Aliens or True Lies, I can't help but be pissed that he has wasted so much time on those Avatar movies, not that they are bad, but one was enough. I mean, think of the great films we still may have got from him if he didn't focus all his attention on them. I am grateful though for all these beautiful 4K's we are getting and of course The Terminator later this year. My only wish with these 3 that just came out would be that they released them with beautiful steelbook editions, that would have been the icing on the cake. Keep up the great work Keith. Peace!
I have said it numerous times as well I think he's a wasted Talent particularly when it comes to the Avatar movies. Don't get me wrong I don't hate Avatar but it is easily his worst movie and I'm going to be seeing way of the water for the first time tomorrow but I'm not expecting a whole lot from it. To be honest I am very surprised that we never got any collectors Editions right from the get go for any of these movies and you know as well as I do it's definitely going to happen. Wow now that sounds quite intriguing and chances are I might have seen it before. Like I said in the video I'm almost certain the DVD release had a bonus disc and I do remember checking out a lot of the special features assuming that making of was on that release. But I'm definitely checking it out
Just pulled the trigger on that Aliens release, pun intended. Ultimately, my reasoning/justification for purchase is, that since its a Cameron remaster, that it may be a one off release vs being included in any future set. My pre-order of the Abyss is still in limbo with Amazon. Finally picked up a blu ray version of The Thaw, Gantz 1+2 dvd, Circuitry Man 1+2 dvd, Uncut Death Machine Bluray, Moontrap dvd, and Dead End Drive-In dvd. Thx for the video.

I know there's a lot of delays when it comes to the abyss but hopefully it won't be too long. I have to admit I haven't heard of many of the pickups that you've gotten. @@millerman9991 Yeah, lately Ive been on the hunt for more obscure 80s and 90s sci fi titles. The Thaw is a sci fi horror from 2009 with a brief bit of Val Kilmer in it whixh I like. Gantz is Japanese sci fi. Death Machine is an 90s movie that Ive never seen but sounds cool. Anyway, Ill spare you the list is long. lol. Currently watching Season 2 of Into The Badlands which has been a lot of fun and great production value and fighting
Again badlands is a series I heard of but never got around to watching. I am a disaster when it comes to TV series. I find it so hard to find the time. I've missed out on so much

My history with this movie is remarkably similar to yours in that I didn't care for it a whole lot for whatever reason when I first saw it and it took a few tries before it really grew on me. I still have some mixed feelings about the ending but the journey getting to there was great. A few nights ago, I just watched my Special Edition DVD that I bought quite a few years back. I thought my Sony UBP-X700 in 'Auto 2' mode for upscaling did a fairly decent job with the video but the Dolby Digital 2.0 audio left something to be desired (except for the water dripping which did sound pretty convincing). It kinda goes without saying but I'm sure this 4K release blows the DVD out of the water! Definitely one to watch in a dark environment.
Hey Mark. Yeah like I said in the video when you look at the DVD now especially against this 4K release there was always going to be only one winner. I still can't get over how beautiful the movie looks on 4k. It almost feels like I'm watching the movie for the first time and that alone is a gift in itself. You are absolutely correct by the way when it comes to watching this in a dark environment and thankfully that's exactly what I get with my movie room. Not a single bit of sunlight gets in there. The thought of looking at the Abyss in a well-lit room really does not appeal to me. Still waiting for my copy despite being a preorder. Guess I shouldn't have waited for reviews first but I was afraid of a T2 situation. I am dying to see how the purple/blue glow of the NTIs looks in Dolby Vision. If there's only one thing great about 4k is the colors and namely scenes that would glow in real life look like they do in 4k not like the night for day filters it appeared from the VHS days.
It's the scenes with the NTIs that really do stand out. The abyss is not the most colorful movie you will ever see but when those scenes happen it makes a hell of a difference. I really hope you get a lot out of it when you do get around to seeing it. I couldn't have been happier with the results. Hopefully you won't have to wait too much longer

Hey Keith, no cameras but definitely on the same wavelength. it was a tough decision. I decided I was only going to pick up one of these movies now, and even though the abyss is not my favorite of the three, this is the one I was most curious about as far as how it would look, and how the special affects would hold up. it was a tough decision. Normally I would just went ahead and got all three but over the holidays I went a little crazy and picked up quite a few movies and several those were fairly expensive box sets and I’m also a big vinyl guy I have a bunch of records pre-ordered, and fortunately and unfortunately several of them have shipped and at $125 a record it’s starting to get to me🙂 i’m sure you know what I mean.
I couldn’t agree more you really can’t argue with James Cameron this is what he wants them to look like that’s OK with me as they look more or less how I would expect them to look as I’m sure you can see in his more recent films. He’s definitely going for a more modern clean look if he have the ability back in 89 that’s exactly what they would’ve look like back then at least that’s the way I look at it. can’t wait for the true lies review one of my all Time favorites from him the more I talk about it I think I’m gonna break down and pick up the other two I don’t think I can wait now. That is a good point that you made by the way when it comes to James Cameron because if he had the means back then chances are that's exactly how the movies would have looked. Don't get me wrong I don't want to be seen this on every single release but for these releases I think it worked very well.
But I know what you mean when it comes to overspending and sometimes you have to be smart. Even now somebody sent me a link to the child play 4K collection that's on sale and I had to say no. I'm hoping that won't come back to haunt me.

Keith you mentioned yesterday Seven is supposed to be coming to 4K. Do you know an actual release date? I'm still watching it at the moment.
Unfortunately Warner Brothers have just announced that it's been delayed until sometime next year. I think it's something to do with the source material and they're obviously trying to get the best out of it. I don't mind them taking there time particularly for a movie like that.
2:35 and it still blows my mind that for all the reverse shots like the one in this time stamp. Ed Harris is looking at just a hole in the floor with a camera lens poking through after his lead actor left the set following multiple takes laying shirtless, freezing cold and soaked. You would never know the production hell this cast went through for this film. All amazing and yes Ed Harris is under rated as a lead actor.
As far as I remember Ed Harris won't even speak about this movie that's how miserable he was on set. I'm almost certain Mary Elizabeth was the exact same as well. But Cameron is a visionary and he'll do anything to execute his Vision regardless of what people think of him.
I agree. Abyss then, Aliens are the best Cameron films, IMO. Titanic is way too much drama, not enough action. True Lies is too much of a comedy than an action movie. Then you have the Avatar movies. They are just the right amount of action, drama, and science fiction but just couldn't get into the stories themselves. Great review.
I think Avatar is my least favorite movie from James Cameron. Take nothing away from it it's still highly entertaining but just like yourself I'm struggling to care for the characters or the story for that matter. I managed to take the stickers off all 3 JC releases successfully. Just be super slow and patient when peeling, and then use the sticker to gather the left over adhesive residue. Again be super slow and patient.
Yeah I managed to remove them myself. As you said you have to be somewhat patient but it was worth it in the end. Hopefully I won't have to do that again anytime soon

Hi Keith, I do agree this looks very good and not as bad as some say but it is completely different from it’s original film print. Grain is there but has clearly been scrubbed away ( just look at the FOX logo at the start) but the AI upscaling is much better at reducing grain nowadays than the old waxy look. It is different looking and a very modern digital look but we must respect this is how Cameron wants it to look now. I too have always loved this film and its message (very current too) especially of course in the much preferred Special Edition version. 👍🏻 Aliens however looks truly awful to me, the overly grainy look to that film added to the experience and in a interview on the special features Cameron actually states he chose a certain type of film to get that grainy look. We all have different set ups and picture preferences so as you say it’s your own personal choice on how it looks so there is no definitive answer. Sound is great on all of them though.
A lot of the grain is gone, yes, but not all, and it still has a filmic look.
Afraid I'll never understand how a grainy look 'adds to the experience'...
Don't get me wrong as much as I enjoyed watching these movies on 4k I definitely do not want to be seeing this kind of process on everything else. I think it worked incredibly well for the James Cameron movies and like I said in the video if it's okay by him then it's okay by me. There is no question about it the grain structure has been scrubbed down but it's still there. Like I said in the video if you go close enough you will notice it. Unfortunately I can't say the same for True Lies. But look I will let my video do the talking on that one. When it comes to aliens I actually had the Blu-ray and the 4K sitting side-by-side and in my eyes there's only one clear winner. But look it's not for everybody. Like I said in this video purists are going to hate it but your average viewer is going to love it. I'm sorry you didn't get the experience that I got when watching aliens. But I really appreciate you stopping by and sharing your thoughts on it.
Thoroughly enjoyed my copy as well Keith. No problem with the way it looks. However, just a very brief glitch on my 4k disc just as Bud is walking towards the edge of the cliff with Little Geek, just before he jumps down. Picture breaks up for a second or two and then it's fine. Although first time the sound went out of sync afterwards. Nothing major, have the blu ray as well. Too much hassle sending it back to the US for a replacement.
I wonder was it simply just a little bit of dust on your disc Gary. Sometimes these 4K disc can be very fragile and anything could throw them off. But I'm so glad to hear that you were happy with your 4K transfer just like myself. Very hard to complain when all we had was a DVD release. I used to love collecting physical format but once blu ray was took over with 4k discs I kind of lost interest as eventually they will do 8k and your buying all over again but great reviews on your channel from Newcastle England

@@millerman9991 I 100% agree that 8K physical is happening anytime soon as for 8k TV they have been around for 2-3 and still no content.
Believe it or not Martin I actually Owned an 8k TV from Samsung and I sold it within a year. One of the worst TVs I've ever owned.
@@millerman9991 I can believe that I've never been interested in 8k they were really expensive the ones I was looking into as a option at the time. I don't think it will ever be a mainstream thing like 4K

Hey Gary. If You go into my description you will see a website called HD movie source and you can pick it up there. If you contact them and let them know I sent you over there they will look after you in terms of price. You can also get it on Amazon Italy and France. WowHD is another option. There's a few out there for you
Damn, missed this review, so didn't know the Blu-ray was all regions, ordered and received Italian copy a couple of hours ago.. Though it was much more cost effective.
Yeah all 4K Blu-rays are region free. Great to hear that you picked it up. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did
@@millerman9991 I know the 4K's are mate, but not always the Blu-rays, have other Italian releases so will join them on the shelf.. Watched a number of 'older' movies of late, quite few I remember the 'muh' feeling, I think age/perspective helps you realise how good they actually are.. Thanks for reply..
