I watched aliens the other night and I was blown today by the clarity and sound. It was the best that film has ever looked. I am fortunate that I still have a brick and Mortar store that I buy my media from and I managed to pick up the Abyss yesterday used. I was a little disappointed for when I opened the desk set and asked them where the third disk went.. Somebody kept the Blu-ray of the film, but they let me have this for 15 bucks. Special features and 4K, I am looking forward to sitting down and watching this. And the only thing I want to mention is the artwork on the sets is absolutely atrocious. I need a color Photocopy of the original poster for this and slid it over the garbage they provided. I am a Traditionalist

Agree with you about the picture quality order: The Abyss, Aliens and True Lies. It's also my order of preference for the actual movies. I also got the iTunes version of The Abyss and Aliens in January and I think they're really good version too. Thanks for the comparaison.

I haven’t seen the iTunes versions of any of these but I’m sure even they look far better than a DVD sound look. I’m just unaware of how compressed they may be and if you loose any details.
That said however most people (including myself) doesn’t notice unless you do side by sides like this.
All that matters is you enjoy what you’re watching 😉👍🏼
Great review Ken! I love what Cameron did with the color timing on the new 4K. It's definitely a little different, but it's really striking. I'm sure this is what he had intended all along. But I could understand some purists maybe not appreciating that as much. But as far I'm concerned, it's an incredible release.
Thanks again bud - I agree…when seen side by side it’s VERY striking with the blues he used but overall - it’s NEVER looked better.
Makes me excited for Terminator hopefully later this year and maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get T2 a new 4k release too…
Some stark differences there between the DVD and 4K! Not sure about a couple of the shots (I actually preferred the more purple coloration over the enhanced blue underwater alien scenes) but generally it looks great.
You can REALLY tell Cameron wanted that “blue hue” that he seems to love to much. It can be a bit much at times. But yeah - a lot better looking.

Great job Ken in evaluating & comparing the Abyss 4k as always. This is how a review ought to be done. Just pure information, no signal noise, lol. Appreciate the review of Dolby Atmos track as well. I'm going to order it now. Ordered True Lies already. Btw, I think I noticed some vinyl collection on your rack beside you? Are you into vinyls also?Just FYI - your video is still getting 1080p quality at most.
Thanks Sas - there is one more thing for me to try which may be causing the 4k issue. I’m definitely set up right now in my recording but I use Kapwing for my video editing and uploading. It asked me if I wanted to upload “auto” or to use “4k.” I selected “auto” assuming it would keep 4k. I suppose I’ll have to ensure I select 4k and “hopefully” that’ll get it done right. I do really appreciate you letting me know and please do so in my next vid that I’ll be getting up later today. (Once I know it’s right from you I’ll know I have the settings finally correct).
And yes - I have around 200+ vinyl albums that I’ve gotten into during the last year with quite a passion developing for it.
I don’t know why I keep choosing expensive hobbies lol.

@@ungraduatedmedia Lol, believe me, I too have been through that journey and victim of the same expensive hobby of purchasing A/V gears, projectors, ALR screens, vinyls, turntable s, expensive stylii, speakers, soundbars and what not. Not to mention Bluray physical media for more than decade and now the 4K madness 😂

When I got my PS2 back in the year 2000, the first DVD I got was Independence Day (2 disk 5 star collection whichwasreleasedin the year 2000). I wish I had gotten The Abyss 2 disk Special Edition (2000 release) with Independence Day. But the bottom line is that it's great to see The Abyss is finally on 4K & Blu-ray.
That first Abyss release on DVD may actually be worth much more at this point now. But yeah, I’ll take it on 4k ALL DAY LONG! It looks incredible! Thanks again for checking out the vid - long live physical media 🤘🏼
To be clear, as a new envisioning of The Abyss the 4K disc is a stunner. Cameron obviously prefers a clean digital look with eye-popping colors and extremely sharp contrasts. And this is it without a doubt: the new version of his film, the way he wants is to be today. One thing it definitely isn’t: a technical restoration that brings the movie we know to the new home video format while keeping it true to the original. And that should be mentioned on the cover: “Cameron’s new visual interpretation of his old film.” And I would be OK with that, because it would be honest. The way they are marketing this product ain’t. And since there’s no other version to choose from it is, in all actuality, cinematic revisionism and the opposite of film preservation. But I’m not really surprised. Cameron has shown time and again that he has no real integrity towards his own oeuvre. BTW: I would rate this in two ways: As a new movie I would give it a 4/5 (or 4.5/5 if you will) picture-wise. As a 4K of an old movie I’d rate it a 2/5.
I like you’re thinking on that - I mean…you’re right…it’s like watching the film for the “very first time” because it is SO VERY different looking. Interesting point…
If you use a hair dryer, you can get that sticker off successfully without damaging the slip cover.

Ken you might want to check the audio quality also, as it sounds little suppressed even at 50% volume level. I checked one of your videos released 2 months ago (Scream factory Carrie 4k Scans vs Arrow Video) and at same volume level that sounded much better.
Will do - I know I set those to 48htz in the OBS settings and adjusted proper bitrate speeds too for this mic I’m now using. When I record it automatically outputs to about 50% volume level. I’ve been leaving it at that level but will try 75%.
I had been using a lavaliere mic that I think was using less compression.

I am an audio / video nut and I can’t tell you how frustrating it’s been trying to get this all correct here on UA-cam.
I’ll keep playing around with the audio settings and I know you’ll let me know how you’re receiving them on your end.

@@Sas-wk9lj- I’m going to post a “Physical Media Forever” vid later that will be a recap of my monthly pick ups so let me know. I may not mess with the audio yet until I get the 4k quality right. The last time I messed with the audio volume I was getting “lip sync” issues that would get bad some of the time. That at least stopped but I will get this 4k video quality right. Appreciate your help.
It's been postponed for release here in Ireland, due to the silly reason that Cameron would not cut out the scene where the rat is used to test the breathing fluid. As a result, I had to order it from eBay in Germany. Personally, I cannot wait to get my hands on my copy I ordered from E bay in Germany.
I wish that whole thing with the rat scene didn’t exist…unnecessary point of contention. As I understand it, the rat was not actually harmed but not sure if that was true.
I really need to go back to that VHS that I watched the tons of kid to see how the color timing was

I heard it’s good but can’t hold a candle to The Abyss. What are your thoughts on it?
The rough average bitrate is comparatively low. Amazing it looks as good as it does.
You know I actually didn’t look at the rough average Mbps. I did hear it was “lower” so I’m not really sure what all went into that. But interesting point…
I think the most revealing thing about this release is how absolutely breathtaking the underwater portions are. You see just how fantastic the camera work was.
You are correct - it truly is a sight to behold with that aqua color as well. IMO so much better than any previous physical media release.
Hold up, i got my copy at barnes $ noble and didn't have any stacking discs. Mine had a flap
God, I want this so bad but no stores have it anywhere near me and I'm not paying $100 for it on eBay.
Definitely DO NOT pay those scalper prices. Disney botched the release and I’m sure (because lord knows they LOVE money) they are going to get more prints made. Just going to have to play the “patience game.”
What a fantastic movie & release overall. Awesome comparison as always. Theres some exceptions however I think the 4K is better hands down. The blue made the villain look far more sinister as you said.
Thanks mate - I do know that a 4k is going to smash a DVD in overall quality but I am amazed at how the color timing gets done. It’s night and day in most those examples and it shows how Cameron intended to have the film look originally. I think it’s pretty cool.

Yeah - it’s darkened out. I don’t know if it’s by intention or accident . But I noticed that too.

The cyan bias is ridiculous on the 4KBD & BD. The DVD colors look more natural.

Too many sheep commenting on the waxy effect. I’m betting none have seen it on 4K or dvd.
You’re right - there are A LOT of people believing that. I just don’t see it unless I REALLY look at maybe pause and zoom in. But if you’re casually watching and NOT looking for these details I’d bet you’d not notice. I think that’s how a lot of “causal movie watchers” would see these.
But as so many in the space I’m in get into the details, they have to find any possible flaws. And there are some from a “naturalist” and “purist” perspective…but overall I think these films look great in 4k.
If you do watch them in 4k on physical media - I hope you enjoy and I’m sure you likely will.
@@ungraduatedmedia I’ve got over 1000 4K discs and 1080p discs and the Cameron collection (including Titanic) look mostly incredible, while I admit that True Lies the most “unusual “ looking of the bunch.
I get the impression that the use of grading, colour, sound and texture is how James Cameron intended these to look. Maybe there has been a little digital manipulation, but I just don’t see the T2 “wax” look people are referring to. I’ve been buying on most formats since VHS (apart form Laserdisc) and they simply look insane.
I get if people prefer the original dvd colour palette for The Abyss - because nostalgia or memory can be ingrained. But these look so good at times, they look like modern films. The bitches who keep saying wax, are the sort of people who buy the Criterion collection because they line up neatly in a collection… or buy Walmart top 10’s because they class that as collecting. Morons.
I’m 40, so I didn’t see the OG Cameron films on the cinema, I don’t know what they originally looked like. But my film collection on different formats over the years has allowed me to respect the classics on multiple formats. Some look better (blade runner, Jaws…) some look worse (T2, Harry Potter, Predator…) and some modern films are no better than 1080p (LaLa Land, Marvel movies….).
@@ColonelSternlove great points. I’m the same age (ish) as you in my early 40’s. I just want my home media looking the absolute best and I feel these Cameron new 4k releases do.
