James Cameron's first foray into the underwater world--magnificent cinematic achievement.

They look fantastic to me , I don’t like grain in any movie

I wish the restoration of older films and films that were purposefully made with fairly heavy film grain, they wouldn’t scrub it… it looks much more filmic and not better when actors start looking like they’re made of wax, etc…
An example is Spielberg’s War of the Worlds… that was purposefully made with a tight but fairly heavy film grain. To DNR that film is to destroy the original content and what it was supposed to look. In the case of the Abyss… this was obviously James Cameron’s vision as to what he wants his film to look like… can’t really argue with the original director being this involved. I’m not a huge fan of Lucas’ cuts of Star Wars… but, who am I to say that the director, the creator of the film, has to do with the restoration process…

Aliens is said to look amazing as well, from the reviews I've read and heard, it looks like the colour timing looks closer to its initial rekease, the bluray looked great but there was more of an push towards orange than red and less of the electric blues to look more like a greenish teal. Great review of the Abyss Andrew, unfortunately Iam from the UK so have to wait a lot longer for a copy but it is on a pre order

I’m so glad to hear that. Aliens just arrived a few minutes ago! I cannot wait to watch and review it. Thanks so much!

How did you even get a copy? I pre-ordered mine back on Feb. 15 but was told it won't be available until after April 10. Don't want to hear any crap about supply problems. I put in the pre-order to avoid that very thing.

I preordered mine on Amazon on 2/9/24. Sadly, it seems like it’s an issue with distribution. Again, I do not work for the studios or Amazon so I can’t truly say what the problem is. In this case, I got my order in super early and I lucked out.

I didn't pre-order any of them to avoid the potential Amazon disappointment, but surprisingly nabbed the Abyss and True Lies at Walmart opening week. Aliens TBD. Let's face it, James Cameron is a media technologist by now, with filmmaking and preservation on the back burner. No offense intended to the Avatar apologists.

The thing is James Cameron has ALWAYS changed the look of his films. He has always messed with the picture. You would have to go back to DVD and LaserDisc to get the original look for any of James Cameron's films.

You wouldn’t get the original look on previous releases. If you compare with the film cells of the theatrical release the 4K version has more accurate colors.

this one looks the "best" of the three - and that's not saying much - It did look good BUT no where near as good if they simply scanned the original camera negative and left all the AI crap out of it
