Basically 98% of True Lies looks and sounds really good. I'm not complaining one bit after so many years of waiting.
Like I said in the video it definitely has its issues but it is so easy to overlook them. I'm so happy I picked it up in the end

I actually love the cover artwork as it makes it look like a typical Jamed Bond film and not an 90's romcom.
In all fairness if you actually check out some of the cover artwork for a lot of 90s romantic comedies they look very similar to that. But yeah I can see the bond theme as well
I absolutely loved true lies back in the day! And you're right about it being very funny. Especially the Bill Paxton sub plot. And ah yes! THAT scene 🤣 no denying from me about it! 😂😂

It goes without saying but this 4K release is going nowhere and chances are you will get it on the cheap in a few months so it's probably the smart move to wait. The 4K transfer has its issues but it's very easy to look past them. It never ruined my enjoyment and I hope you enjoy it whenever you get around to checking it out. It's definitely not one of my favorite James Cameron movies but take nothing away from it I had an absolute blast revisiting it the other night. It was probably my most enjoyable viewing experience of True Lies and I can't wait to watch it again. Thank you so much John for stopping by and happy Easter to you and the family

The more I reflect on this video the more I realized that everything that I had issues with should be taking with a pinch of salt because there is no denying that this is the go-to version to own when it comes to watching True Lies and I'm so happy that I picked it up in the end. Its a very underrated film. Saw it a while ago for the first time on Disney Plus and rather enjoyed it. Anything is better than the DVD. at least it's decent enough. Great review Keith.
Yes it does have its issues Aaron but it's a Night and Day difference over that DVD. It's a bit of a no-brainer in the end. Great to hear that you enjoyed it
Thanks for another tip-top video Keith, I've got this on pre-order, so this should arrive after the weekend - this movie holds a special place in my heart as it was the 1st 15 rated movie I saw at the cinema along with my dad, which is a little bittersweet as he passed away suddenly in November last year, so ill have watch it as a nice tribute to him. Again thanks for the excellent content.

Despite the issues I had with it it is easily the best the movie has ever looked and it will never ruin my enjoyment of what is a truly fantastic movie. OK so I just got to finish watching it on my oled and for me it looks great. There is actually film grain, and to be honest, the ai touch-ups were hardly that noticeable. Some scenes had a bit of waxyness to the faces, but it really didn't detract from my viewing experience. Close up's looked amazing, and colours popped. The only drawback was the sound. Gunfire sounded flat to me. But overall, this is well worth the pickup imo.
Like I said in the video David the 4K transfer does have its issues but I find it's very easy to look past them because of the fact that the only version we've had before was a DVD edition. Not only that but I actually had the Blu-ray bootleg Edition and it is a Night and Day difference over that release aswell. It's by no means perfect but I am so happy to have it and it will always be my go-to version to look at when it comes to True Lies. I'm so glad to hear that you're as happy with it as I am

One of my absolute favourite movies. But after T2, and reviews like this, I'll be sticking to the D-Theatre rip I've been enjoying for years. I'm not going to encourage crap like this with my hard earned.
Like I said in the video it does have it's issues but if you can look past them there's a lot to enjoy with this 4K transfer. It's still the version to own. But if you're happy with what you have then stick with it

It's a no-brainer Marty. It is light years ahead of its DVD counterpart. There's only one version to own and it is the 4k. It's very easy to look past its issues. Thank you as always for stopping by

Bill paxton definitely makes any film better, such a bif fan of him and rip. I knew there was definitely some shenanigans with this transfer out of the three but im still glad to be able to own it in a few weeks, the spanish bluray i heard looks quite good but i was always going to wait for the 4k.
Hey Steve. I actually checked out the bootleg release of True Lies before doing this video and trust me when I say this 4K release is a marked improvement. It does have its issues but trust me it's very easy to overlook them and you should be very happy when you get it in your hands. Thank you so much for checking it out

Hey Mark. Yeah I have checked out the Blu-ray as a matter of fact when you look at my comparisons in this video it's that Blu-ray. It holds up quite well. Not as good as the 4k Blu-ray but it's a nice option to have for anyone who doesn't have a 4K setup.

hey Keith, I was going to pick this up myself yesterday when I went to London for a shopping spree but couldn't find it, would you still recommend me picking it up at some point or would you recommend just getting the Blu-ray?
Hey Curtis. I definitely recommend picking up the 4K release. I know it has its issues but it's easy to look past them particularly when you see those beautiful Dolby vision colors. I'm almost certain you can't buy a Blu-ray release either. So this is definitely the way to go

Thank you Keith for another great (and honest) review. Yeah, this may not be what we've been hoping for. But, like I said before, the restoration of this particular movie appears to have been especially difficult. They had to cope with different issues and did the best they could with the material they had. I don't believe that they were kind of lazy with this restoration. It wouldn't make any sense since they came up with great transfers for Aliens and The Abyss. So why should they mess this one up? Given that some parts of the movie still look great and you get this great Atmos upgrade, I would aggree with your review. The 4K of True Lies is still the best version you can own. It does, of course, look better than the DVD and the bootleg Spanish Blu Ray. Yes, I am disappointed since True Lies is one of my favorite 90ies movies. But I'll live with it. There won't be a better version. I'm still excited that they give T2 another go. This could really look great. I wish you and your family Happy Easter! Hope you can relax a little and maybe enjoy some good films.
I have said it a few times tonight but it's very easy to look past its issues when you consider that all we got before this was a DVD. Is there room for improvement absolutely but it's never going to spoil my enjoyment of the movie itself. There is moments in there where it looks absolutely spectacular and the Dolby vision colors gives me more than enough of an upgrade and I have to admit I'm very happy. It was just fun revisiting the movie after all these years and I honestly can't wait to watch it again. Tbh. I was just happy to watch it again hahah. I mean nothing is perfect But like ya said if you get hung up on those you will ruin the experience. It’s a fun movie.

@@millerman9991 and the other thing I only recently realized is that this is actually classified as a comedy. So with that in mind knowing it’s not all action it’s actually one of the best action comedies out there
Great review mate. My copy comes tomorrow. All I care about it's better than the dvd. I heard they had no choice to scrub it. I saw a video on UA-cam about it. I mixture of how they filmed it and the condition of the negative.

I'm more convinced by the well-known Spanish pirate Blu-ray, the only HD edition we've had of this movie in all these years, although the downside is that it looks darker, with high black contrast, but at least it preserves the fine details of the film and it looks like it did at the time of its release, it doesn't look as waxy texture as this official production.
I actually have that Spanish bootleg release and I can comfortably say the 4k looks far better. I had both of them on side-by-side and it's quite obvious who's the clear winner in terms of picture quality. Even though the 4K release has its issues I can easily look past them especially when you hear how poor the original source material was. It's a wonder they got it looking the way they did. But of course this is all personal choice.
I have a fondness for this film because I saw it in the Savoy on the Big Screen on by 15th birthday, thanks for the review bit I think this transfer would drive me nuts by sounds of things. But I might give the other 2 a try.
I have to admit even though the 4K transfer has its issues it is clearly the best way to own the movie. I honestly think you'll be very happy with it because the good definitely outweighs the bad. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and check it out
Hi Keith. My wife & I have just watched this & I agree with you 100%. It does have a few issues but it does not spoil your enjoyment at all. It is the best its ever looked & is now the only way to watch this film. I am now looking forward to getting my copies of ALIENS & THE ABYSS.

I love "True Lies" its a great spy action-comedy movie, such a huge shame that we never had a sequel, love the cast for this movie, highly entertaining & funny the movie is, many, many great moments.
The scenes that broke all vhs players 🤣🤣🤣damn Jamie Lee Curtis was 🔥🔥🔥😍😍😍, love that cover of Arnie & Jamie myself, still think a alternative artwork would of been a nice touch.
A hairdryer to remove sticky labels, will try that, i knew this movie was likely to be the best in transfer wise, but i"ll still be purchasing to decide if its better than the Spanish blu ray & if its total uncut etc. Fine review Sir

Great work Keith....The blu ray seems to be very impressive..... wonder if that has less dnr......like the blu ray that came with terminator 2.... nobody talks about it...but its actually a better transfer than the 4k counterpart.......
The Blu-ray holds up quite well as you can see in my comparisons. I still think the 4K version is the way to watch it but at least the blu ray option is there for people that don't have the means to play 4k. What volume do you normally watch your movies on Keith? That Samsung has some power
It varies believe it or not. If I'm watching Dolby Atmos or dtsx I have it set to 38. Anything else would normally be 41. I would hate to hear what I would sound like if I went further

I love this 4K transfer, it was damn near too good. In fact, Arnold's stunt doubles were easily visible in the opening action sequence. 😂
Yeah I have to admit I noticed that myself when it came to Arnold's stunt double particularly on the horse. The transfer has its issues but it's very easy to overlook them. I couldn't be happier with it

Agreed, this is an excellent 4K upgrade.
I removed my stickers from all 3 with a hairdryer with no residue left over.
I am going to attempt it this weekend. Fingers crossed everything works out
I would also like to Add one more comment, I am happy to have this 4K transfer of True lies, because there is about 20 times where you can easily see Arnold's stunt double, and with AI next time they do it they'll probably overlay Arnold's face on all the stunt doubles... so I'm happy to have a copy that shows all his stunt doubles, and there's at least 5 different stunt doubles I saw :) Happy Easter everyone!
I don't think it will ever get that bad in terms of replacing a stunt double face. The fact that you can see the stunt doubles face so clearly it's part of its DNA and changing it would be incredibly wrong even if it is as obvious as it is. Happy Easter to you
The true lies sticker that was on the slip, came off for me pretty easy it’s the abyss sticker that didn’t really come off that easy. Only left a little sticker residue on the abyss slip which I could get off easily.
Great to hear that the True Lies sticker is not an issue and I will definitely try and remove it. The other two are very hard to get off but I have been given a few tips so I'm going to try this weekend. Fingers crossed everything will be okay
I have not watched this movie in years as well. Overall I'm pretty happy with this movie but there are some scenes seems out of focus/fuzzy look if you will. To bad they couldn't fix that.
Yeah I've said this a few times it definitely has its issues no question about it. But when you consider all the good that it gets right it's very easy to ignore the bad. I'm still incredibly happy to own it and I can't wait to see it again
😮 I read reviews on these before they went physical. It said True Lies was the worst . It was supposed to out do Bond shame they didnt do more Lots of storylines missed.

Shogun Tv series watch it as its amazing 👏 as good as the original 80s version which wz great.
Have you thought about getting a projector? Tv they are pretty good the ones you place on the floor throw up the picture So you coukd use your whole wall at the back .

To be honest I only just got my brand new OLED TV and I couldn't be any more happier with it. It is regarded as the greatest OLED TV ever made and I have to agree. So I don't think I'll be looking into a projector anytime soon. It's something I would like to check out some time in the future but I think I would like a bigger room to have it in. Never say never

True lies is an outlier for Cameron all his movies have some great action but most are serious emotional stories true lies is a movie that does not take it self seriously at all not a bad thing it’s fun as hell bill paxton as Simon is hilarious

This is just an OK film for me so it was never going to be a Day 1 purchase. I may pick this up when the price goes down later on, but in the meantime, I do have a very good HD broadcast recording from last year. All the best to both of you. Gaz.

Just got true lies and the abyss today from the Desert movie club. It took forever to get.

I heard the original camera negative was in poor condition but I don't understand why they cocked this one up compared to the other 2, I have picked this up as it's such a hilarious film the increase in sales of Kleenex tissues owes a lot to the JLC scene she is so sexy in most of the things she does.
Yeah you can't help but feel a little bit disappointed when you consider how good the other two looked. This one definitely has some obvious issues. To be honest I'm not really surprised that this is the worst of the three. But like I said in the video if you can look past its issues you will get a lot from it. Once again Keith, I thoroughly enjoyed your review of the final Cameron film in this grand 4k trifecta. Thank God, I'm not one of those people that dissect a movie frame by frame and pick it apart looking for every little problem, I honestly don't know how those people can enjoy a movie for what it is. Of course, there is some smoothing in places, and it may not be on par with Aliens & the Abyss, but hey, it looks a damn sight better than what we had so I'm happy. As far as the stickers go, I'm not even going to attempt their removal, you know as well as I do Keith, once you pull up just one of those corners and it's not working out, you'll be sorry. I'd rather have a mint slip with the sticker than a f-cked up one with a corner partially removed or worse yet a ruined slip. I just think of the sticker as hype sticker like they used to put on the VHS tapes back in the day. Peace!

for this particular movie apparently they don't have the master film, instead that used various satellite TV video source and used Ai to Remaster it.
Yeah apparently it's original source material is in very poor condition. When you consider all of that it's quite incredible how well it's looking on this release despite its issues. I'm so happy I have it

Can anyone confirm of the UK version is cut? There is 60 second difference in runtime from the US release.

I bought the UK release this morning, watched it this afternoon, I can confirm it's fully uncut compared to the old UK dvd release.

@millerman9991 I really can't believe that people were saying that it looked worse than Terminator 2. lol, you know, when I hear that it makes me wonder if there using a descent 4k TV cause if there using a cheap 4k tv with crappy HDR and Dolby Vision it will make the picture look worse like really bad that's the first thing if you want your 4k blu rays to look good the way there suppose to look you gotta have a good 4k TV with good HDR and good Dolby Vision for me I use a 77 inch lg g2 oled and I know you have a oled to so when we watch 4ks they look how there meant to look but who knows.
That's the thing because you do have to factor in everybody's equipment. Chances are everybody is going to be having a different viewing experience. People TVs could be poorly calibrated as well. A lot of them probably still have the digital noise reduction on. To be honest sometimes I think people just jump on the bandwagon and complain without seeing the transfer at all. I'm very happy with it and it definitely doesn't come anywhere close to T2 in terms of its transfer
I really dont care for the 4k copy because I have 2 bluray players in my house. I am not buying any damn 4k bluray player. My regular panasonic bluray player does a great job upscaling.
If you're happy with your Blu-ray then stick with it.
Can never understand why there was never a sequel to this brilliant action, comedy film, Keith. Like you said Keith, not the best 4K transfer but two out of three ain't bad. Still worth owning though.
When you consider that we only had a DVD release you can't really complain too much when it comes to its transfer. I'm still very happy that I picked it up in the end. Had such a blast revisiting the movie. But thank you so much Gary for checking it out and hopefully see you on the stream tonight

Paul from Twinlix has a conversation with one of the guys who worked on the transfer on his YT channel. Apparently the OCN was in very bad shape, which required them to use excessive techniques in order to achieve the look.
Hey Ben. Yeah I only heard about that and when you take that into consideration it's quite incredible how they got that transfer looking in the end. I think it helped me appreciate it that little bit more. Despite its problems I still think it's a great transfer.
Hey Keith, looks like you’re seeing what everyone’s seeing this one is definitely the worst of the three. of course, that’s disappointing especially to me, because when these three were announced, I was expecting this one to look the best. not only because it was the newest of the three but for all the outdoor scenes, and that awesome opening scene at night. luckily most of that sounds like still holds up. True I haven’t seen it yet but like you suspected, I did go ahead and order true lies and aliens. I just couldn’t wait after everything that’s been said.
I did have the DVHS of true lies and it absolutely blew away the DVD it looked and sounded fantastic 1080i and 5.1 sound on a video tape I’m certain it was way less compressed as the DVHS had about 3 or 4more gig available storage than the DVD and man it was awesome . unfortunately that’s long gone. I would be curious to see how it stacked up against this 4K. I’m certain the 4K would be superior and the Atmos no contest. I know some of the fine detail and grain has been scrubbed away, but I’m pretty sure I can deal with that so I expect I’ll be happy. Of course I wish it was perfect but what can you do? I’d like to think this was the best they could do,perhaps damage to the negative or just really bad grain inconsistency and they decided to remove it. anyways Keith glad you reviewed all these movies and I’ll see you in the next one👍
Like I said in the video John the transfer itself does have its issues no question about it but the good outweighs the bad on this release and it is very easy to overlook its issues when you consider that we only had a DVD edition. The Dolby vision is the star of The Show and this is the real reason to why you would want to pick this up. Honestly John I hope you get as much out of it as I did. It was still a blast to watch even with its issues and it will never ruin my enjoyment of this movie. It is the version to own. The only thing that somewhat surprises me is why they were able to get the abyss and aliens looking as good as they were but yet True Lies had issues. Now I was told that apparently the original source material for True Lies was in Very Bad shape and if that's the case then it's a miracle how they got this looking the way it does. If you don't mind John whenever you do get it through the door and check it out get back to me and let me know what you think yourself.

I went to watch it at the pictures and bought on VHS and for some reason it’s kind of been lost. Great to see it rereleased but not good to hear of the excessive DNR.
My wife is the expert sticker remover and she swears by a hairdryer.
Like I said in the video it's very easy to overlook its issues when you consider that all we got was a DVD release of it. It will never ruin my enjoyment of the movie itself. I will take a hair dryer to the stickers sometime this weekend. Hopefully it'll work out.
Good old 80s and 90s. I mostly record big blockbusters on HBO , Showtime and Starz on my VCR.😅😅😅😅
True Lies is my favorite Cameron film. Just watched Aliens. Boy those effects did not hold up well unlike an older film like Blade Runner.
I have to admit I don't have too many concerns when it comes to the effects on aliens. Maybe one or two scenes but I would never change a thing

Definitely the least appealing transfer of the 3 Cameron 4Ks Keith but still very enjoyable and a giant leap ahead of the dvd so I have to be thankful. I'll also be reviewing this,, Aliens,, The Abyss and Titanic along with a video history of those on my own channel.. Happy Easter!

I just watched it yesterday. I was impressed with it as well. As for audio, I thought Aliens was the worst audio track. It was completely botched IMO.
It's a shame you had troubles with the audio on aliens. Thankfully I didn't have the same
I enjoyed True Lies the most out of the 3 films, the comedy keeps building and really gets you laughing, while the drama in the Abyss gets a bit much, and even though James Cameron did his best to make Aliens look futuristic, the future is obviously going to be quite more sophisticated when we end up there
Like I said in the video True Lies I found to be incredibly refreshing when you consider all that we got from James Cameron was sci-fi. It gave me everything that I wanted and more and it was such a blast revisiting it after all these years. It holds up so well and I cannot wait to sit down and watch it again
I've seen the Abyss so many times I fast forwarded through the 10 min CPR scene, because I just don't enjoy that level of drama myself, it's on par with Avatar 2, I hope Avatar 3 has a more human element and not just an endless CGI drama about creatures I don't really care about... :) just my 2 cents
Wow I am shocked to hear that you fast forward that scene. It is some of the greatest acting I have ever seen and there is no way I could ever do that myself. It's so amazingly powerful as well.
I hate the fact that everything Buena Vista owns (Disney) they don’t put the actual theatrical release year on it . Drives me crazy.

I've been on the fence about this one and still am. Anyway this is a pretty sad film as Cameron stopped making films for the bros and made mainstream films only after. I'd be happy if every movie he made after was a total bomb so long as it just a little better then Piranha 2.
Honestly Mark I still think it's the best way to own the movie. Tell you the truth it's a bit of a no-brainer. I wouldn't be able to watch the DVD knowing this releases out there. The good definitely outweighs the bad on this release. I hope you give it a go someday

Great film, crap transfer. Only worth picking because there are no HD releases.
Thankfully a lot of people we're able to overlook its issues include myself. Easily the best the movie has ever looked. When you consider how poor the source material was in and how they got it looking. It's remarkable.

It is nowhere close to being as bad as T2. It has its issues but it's very easy to overlook them considering we only ever had a DVD release. I hope you enjoy it
