Amazing q&a here with Jim, there's a few new things he mentioned here that were quite new about the making of the Abyss that I didn't know about before that was so cool to here and about time were getting both the Abyss and titanic on 4k this year thank goodness now where's true lies, strange days and Solaris Lol all in good patience as with Jim
I’m sure you’ve already seen the documentary, “Under Pressure,” on the making of “The Abyss,” but if not it’s fantastic and covers much of what Cameron talks about here and more.
I recall reading that Cameron and Silvestri didn't get along. But neither did Cameron and Horner on Aliens, yet they went on to work successfully together again on Titanic and Avatar.
@@matthewmoran5297 Not sure. I think all professional relationships with Cameron were likely strained in his younger more ornery disposition for perfectionism as a department polymath himself.
OH MY GOSH! HOW DID I MISS THIS INTERVIEW?? The Abyss was a bitch to make! Now we have the 4K version and the extended version in 4K as well, including “Making The Abyss” and it’s incredible. James Cameron, don’t complain about the hat tricks! You’re the one that set the bar so high. You’re damn right we expect hat tricks when it’s a film written and directed by you!
I'd be fun to learn some of the actors Cameron either initially visualized - or even seriously considered - for the cast that eventually ended up being so indelibly iconic in epitomizing those roles with such enthralling performances that definitively exemplified the harrowing heart of The Abyss in the public consciousness and our fandom? It's just an intersting exercise to imagine what if varietables had evolved slightly different, then what faces might we now be associating with the film instead, and would we celebrate their contribution similarly to who ultimately won as those characters in 1989? I suppose I might be able to envision Kevin Costner, Jeff Bridges or Kurt Russell as Virgil Bud Brigman... Maybe Madeline Stowe, Debra Winger or Karen Allen as Lindsay... Perhaps Michael Paré, Jeff Fehey or Val Kilmer as Lt Coffey...
How was the transfer? The Discfather on Twitter claims he didn’t like what he saw. What is your take on it? Any signs of DNR? Grain? We just don’t want it to be same level as T2 or Predator the wax edition.
Gosh that one idiotic audience question about HFR for Avatar and Jim's future movies... You are at a special screening of The Abyss attending an interview that IS ABOUT The Abyss and you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to ask Jim a question about one of his most underrated movies that was one of the most difficult shoots in Hollywood history and you ask a totally unrelated, moronic question that Jim answered a hundred times during press for Avatar: The Way Of Water. What a fool he was. A total waste of a question, seat and ticket.
@@ScottSullivanTV I think 2.20 also looks best for this film. I saw it in 70mm in 1989 and had a 2.20 version of the theatrical version on laserdisc. 2.35 always looks cramped to me, like it was always intended to cropped at 2.20. Theatrical version is also still my favorite over the special edition.
Wow…his version and Mastrantonio’s version of the reviving scene is very very different. Apparently Cameron had her do MULTIPLE reshoots of that very extreme scene to the point that she was so traumatized she never worked with him again and still will not talk about the scene. I think he downplayed that experience.
Awesome upload of an interesting film Q&A. But this is 2023, man. Set your camera resolution to HD and hold your phone still. It looks like you filmed this when the movie came out!
I was sitting fairly far back in the auditorium and had to zoom in as much as my iPhone would allow. That’s why the picture is not the greatest (though still HD) and a bit shaky. Sorry I wasn’t shooting on a RED camera with a stedicam setup, lmao.
house lights up during end credits , dreadful projectionist should wait until end credits finish then house lights come up if the theatrical version isn't included not interested in uhd 4k , if the theatrical six track Dolby Stereo format 42 isn't included again not interested if a 4.2.4 Dolby Stereo theatrical mix isn't also included not interested in this uhd 4k , otherwise its just another cheap near field mix made for small speakers and not JBL professional cinema , if the colour isn't transparent with the theatrical not interested if the super35 of the theatrical 35mm scope 2.35:1 isn't same not interested

Dear Jim! Human life is limited, and the number of creative people in the world of cinema is very few. Please stop making Avatars and make other films for your audience and fans. The billion-dollar box office success of Avatars is not a reason for you to stop directing other films.
Michael Biehn is great in it.
Some say he should’ve gotten a Best Supporting Actor nomination for this performance
Cameron is my idol. Would love to see him speak!
Brilliant.. Thanks for this
My favorite JC movie❤
How can one man be so based? Also thanks for this!
Thank you so much for posting this ❤
I don't know you but I sure do love you! For what you are doing!
Thanks for posting. What luck that he extended the Q&A just long enough for someone to ask about the 4K release.
I know right? That would’ve been the first thing I asked him
And now the Abyss is available in 4K Blu Ray! Both, the extended version and the theatrical version including all the extras. It’s so awesome!
Thank you for uploading this!
Thanks for uploading this, JC is the man! 👍

Was the film in open matte 1.78 or in a 2.20 (70mm) or 2.39
2.39 brand new 4k remaster DCP!

Where was bill paxton in the movie
Crazy this has so few likes
The Abyss was Cameron's Close Encounters and I think its just as great. Cocoon was Ron Howard's and it wasn't quite as masterful

It’s a muddled over ambitious underwater version of 2001 : a space odyssey
Lots of elements of "2010" as well.
Not really. It's much more of a human drama. Character drama. About people
