    Ooo, what if a version of the Pokemon League was devised by a king or queen or someone like that as a trial/rite of passage for their heir? A mastery of commanding Pokémon in battle is to be expected of royalty, methinks. The lords of each city would’ve been told to prepare a challenge for the heir - a unique test of wit that would become the gym puzzles, and of course a battle. The heir would go around challenging these lords, earning some sort of keepsake as proof of their victory. And the king/queen/whatever would then be waiting to challenge them themself to see how far their heir had come.

    I love your take on rivals Tho, I don’t think Rivals and Villains should ALWAYS be together Instead, I think Rivals should show the player How different people expirience pokemon bonds That’s How I would fix the Kalos rivals for example Xauna, Tierno and Trevor make a nice trio Xauna conects with pokemon no matter what Tierno conects thanks to Dancing And Trevor is more of a collector of data and pokemon You could have them try to mega evolve Xauna and Tierno doing it inmediatly thanks to their bonds with pokemon But Trevor has a harder time since he is more focused in getting data and not bonding with the individual pokemon Or heck Have a Akalos rival be ALL about mega evolution Only to fail at it. Even at some point, have a Team filled with pokemon able to mega evolve to no luck. Since non of them mega evolves. You Can do something similar with other regions on mind. Keeping the focus in the bond pokemon and trainer have or How the rivals grow by learning from the player

    I disagree with your opening monologue about there not being a good reason to combine some of the types. From a game-design perspective, types should be intuitive, umbrella genuses. Dark & Ghost, and Ground & Rock, are very difficult to distinguish conceptually, which leads to confusion and a difficulty in remembering weaknesses and strengths. It'd be easy to get this down to 15 or 16 types, which is already a lot.

    Pokémon can make pure evil villians, but they never really bother with one exception… Ironically, every other villain gets blown out if the water by Explorers Of Sky Darkrai in terms of pure evil, and success. Even Rainbow Rocket Giovanni comes up short. Darkrai didn’t just win, he didn’t just cause the apocalypse, he caused the apocalypse and ruled the dark future for over at least 100 years with Dialga as his puppet, we are only told that it’s many generations so it could be even longer. Eyeryone lived in constant fear, most Pokémon went feral and anyone who opposed dialga got taken to a stockade and killed. Not only that, but because Arceus intervened and simply allowed the altered world to continue, Darkrai ultimately got the last laugh as he left a permanent scar on the world. Then he was smart enough to stop a time travel threat, then when that failed, he knew go into hiding, and try a different approach, shrouding the entire world in a nightmare and manipulating the heroes into trying to off themselves. The only real thing he lacks a backstory….but he pretty much checks everything else

      It's funny how darkrais despiction can change fro ultimate evil over 'an inconvenience' to 'pretty nice guy' depending on which Pokémon Media you're consuming. I don't think any other Pokémon has such a big variety on how it's shown as Darkrai does.

    • @conmanay4563

      @@Aurirang Darkrai is portrayed almost entirely as a misunderstood creature that means no harm, so Explorers Darkrai a major outlier, which is why I wish we knew more about his backstory. I always had the head canon that he was feared and hated like all other Darkrai and became evil as a result I like both depictions though

  • @connorbutler5900
    @connorbutler5900 14 днів тому

    It's my head-canon that the inside of every pokeball is the same space; an enormous open world based with every pokemons favoured terrain, with everything they need to live happily. Pokeballs are just portable doorways to that world. The loyalty to the trainer comes from the appreciation of the trainers strength, and the fact that the Pokemon realise that now they've been caught, their lives will be full of meaning, satisfaction, free food and safety.

    I'm gonna be honest. Most of the proposed ideas and changes seem... not great. Maybe not from a casual standpoint, but from a competitive one. Now I understand competitive isnt everything, in fact I enjoy Pokemon more often for the designs and story than for the competitive game. But the thing is that these changes usually dont really effect the casual experience all too much. Bug type sucks in competitive, but I know people who run with a bug type their entire casual playthru. These changes have. Afar greater effect on competiitve, so I feel the competitive leaning perspective might be more valuable to take into consideration here.

    When you say reboot you must be referring to a hard reboot, which could potentially happen soon. However there have already been at least a couple of soft reboots already, gen 5-8 and now gen 9, gen 5-8 are a soft reboot to the series which rebooted gen 1-4 and now gen 9 is a soft reboot of gen 5, which presumably means gen 10-12 will be reboots to gen 6-8. Again possibly a hard reboot with gen 10 or 11 but as late as gen 12 or 13.

    I don't think the actual mechanics of how pokeballs work will ever be explained. There just isn't an answer they can give that won't look bad in some way. Nintendo and the Pokemon company are very, VERY cautious about anything that might hint towards the reality of the games. Which is that you are capturing animals for the purpose of forcing them to fight each other. Any explanation is going to have a downside and in some way and will likely invoke parallels to that line of thinking. So we will never get that answer.

    But would a Materball have stuff inside it to have a Pokemon always consent or does the Pokemon not need to consent and that no energy is left for the Pokeball to detect or latch on to if the Pokemon has fainted? Also, when moving the Pokemon to a new Pokeball, does the Pokemon try to evolve however it can even if it can't perfectly replicate the lingering data? In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond the D.A.TA Transport Pad is more advanced because it gives you the option to replace on of the 6 party Pokemon or to send the caught Pokemon in the Box on a PC. I'm pretty sure the Pokedex has something to do with why Ash would use a trading machine instead of trading by hand.

    I think a great way to make the main villain feel like a threat the player wants to beat is to do what a lot of good action games do, take a page from Devil may cry 3 In DMC 3 the player character Dante faces off against his rival and twin brother Vergil three times splitting the game into three distinct acts Act 1. Dante fights Vergil and does well until Vergil starts trying, at the end Dante is defeated, his half of the perfect amulet is taken, and Vergil is left disappointed with how weak his brother was Act 2. Dante and Vergil fight again with Dante having gotten stronger and Vergil fighting with Beowulf, a new weapon he is clearly unfamiliar with making the two about even, the fight is inconclusive due to being interrupted by Arkham and Lady Act 3. Dante and Vergil have one final showdown in the demon world with both giving it their absolute best, and ultimately Dante is the one who emerges victorious finally defeating his brother in battle after having come so far from their first clash I feel this is a pretty good structure to apply to either a rival or a villain with the first encounter giving the player motivation to keep getting better until they are finally able to surpass the opponent that had given them so much trouble

    Personally the joining the evil team path leaves the rivals story a bit wanting, mainly because I feel him earning his pokemon's trust back shouldn't be done offscreen, I'd instead have the part where they run away or simply stop obeying him happen around the middle after treating them worse and worse, then he has to spend the rest of the game rebuilding their relationship and this becoming both a better trainer and a better person Yeah I know it's kind of similar to silver but in what I just described, the rival would start off fine, then fall into a hole, and then finally pull himself back out at the finale compared to silver who's a jerk who ends up growing a heart and learning to treat his pokemon as friends instead of tools

    my thought on “why don’t people own teams of 40 strong pokemon” is the time and cost to care for so many creatures that have such vastly different needs. an average person doesn’t own a dozen gyrados because they can’t care for all of them. having two or three might just be all they can handle.

    wait do people actually think a pokemon reboot means retelling the same story from the first games? that isn't anywhere close to what a reboot is, a reboot isn't telling the same stories that came before, you can if you want if there are plot points and lore that you want to keep but a reboot is starting new and changing the lore and telling new stories unrelated to the ones that came before and pokemon has already kinda done this by having more than one timeline, there's the old timeline which is everything before gen six and maybe gens seven to nine with gen six omega ruby and alpha sapphire as well as the let's go games being set in the mega timeline, the games post megas that don't have megas can honestly be placed within either timeline

    Aside from the idea that a lot of people mentioned here about catching the avatars of legendary Pokémon, I also like the idea that was presented with Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, where the box legendary was hurt and lost its powers, so it becomes your partner but doesn't have access to the absurd levels of power other legendaries do. For instance, there are plenty of legendary Pokémon who are known to have a temper, so having one of them clash with another and lose, getting wounded and powered-down, wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility. Then, your task along the game is to help it recover to its full potential, so you actually earn your possession of a god-like being and it makes sense for the legendary to want to stick around. A way that I could see something similar happening is through an evolving legendary, like in Pokémon Sun/Moon. Both Nebby and the second Cosmog you get in those games are initally met in a tiny, child-like state where they have no access to the time-space warping capabilities of their final forms and, as the story progresses, you watch them grow, possibly helping them along the way and, in the end, they are already used to being around you, so they stick around

    1:52 I think that's what does Legendary to be a true legendary: 1) Design. Trinity of Teal Mask i hardly call legendary's, because they look like a a little stronger than the others,and Game Freak was understood this,and gave to them not very strong characteristics. 2) Difficult to obtain. In order to get a conditional Beautyfly in the early game, you need to look for it for a very long time from the crowd of other Pokemon. To get some kind of Tapu - Poko, you need to go to the electronic event in DLC. BUT : it's about a Pokémon like Enternatus ,Zacian , Nekrosma. They are a plot creatures, so they can't just be brought into some DLS, because it's meta. Also, Zapdos or Entey are do not have a complex meaning and they are not necessary. So they can be used

    These are pretty extreme ideas so here are some more radical ways you could change the formula. We've seen scaling systems used in RPGs, and although it has unique challenges it opens up new opportunities. First and foremost, you NEVER have to grind. Second, you can have a truly open world and allow almost all content to be done in any order. The combination of the two can provide completely unique playthroughs, even if you were using the exact same pokemon with the exact same moveset. One interesting effect is this would likely require difficulty settings. Luckily, the bulk of that work could be done by altering the level of enemies in relation to yourself. In fact, if someone was going this far with mechanics, it could be possible to do away with the concept of levels themselves. You simply track the progress of your own pokemon with an experience bar until it caps and they learn something new; whether a new move or they evolve. Such a system also has the benefit of allowing you to rechallenge gyms who would then have either new movesets or even new pokemon base don your level... meaning the replay value of EVERYTHING goes through the roof. This is an idea that would drastically change the series, but it has amazing potential. Romhacks have already ironed out the kinks of this, so it is an actual possibility. Another idea would be to incorporate a basic talent tree system. The main benefits of doing so are increasing replay value and not having to design as many new pokemon each generation. This could simplify the EV mechanic by allowing you to customize stats, while removing 100% of the grind. Instead of gimmicks that you throw away with each gen, you are looking to add new options to the talent trees (ex. you could rework mega evolutions in this system; not a power gain but allows you to change type and moveset). They also could offer the choice between certain powerful moves, which would allow movesets to be more varied while limiting power creep. Furthermore, this could be used to determine natures and abilities, ending the need of catching and breeding the same pokemon over and over. The best part is this is an extra layer of customization that new ideas can be placed on top of, and you can change your talents at any time out of combat to alter your team for a specific fight without changing a member out. My final idea is considering adding CDs to certain abilities. This is an entire new dimension to balance moves and develop strategies around. We could use this to expand the total number of moves you can have at any given time, and even give each move a power budget that means it can only be placed in certain slots. The latter means movesets are more varied and you can offer several powerful options without having to worry about them being stacked. You could also take the idea from the South Park game Stick of Truth where there were "hero abilities" that had a CD and you were forced to choose between using one of those or an item in a turn. There are a lot of interesting possibilities.

    I like small quests for pokemons, upgrading moves and disobeing. I'm not sure about removing stats, it seems kinda pointless and weird. And tokens don't feel like a pokemon thing. Can't we just change how EV work a little bit? Just make ways to get'em make sense. For example, to raise physical defence instead of fighting specific pokemon you'll need to just take physical damage. Hp is upgraded proportional to hp lost (after applying defence. Same with special defence. Moves will be upgraded by using them. Attack/special attack will be upgraded by using moves (if this stats will be there). Speed is weird because it is'nt clear should it be upgraded by going first or second. Maybe it is worth removing, idk.

    It’s pretty outdated and doesn’t feel that great to play anymore, but the fangame Pokemon: Legends of the Arena has a good rival. There’s even a bit of environmental storytelling with a volcano that is supposed to have a Moltres at the peak, yet is nowhere to be found 🧐

  • @james-robertc.f.9942

    I'm curious about two elements of the upgraded attacks 1. Branching attack? 2. Struggle First, what about similar moves, like earthquake vs high horsepower. Would you have them start out as different moves, or perhaps a branching path systen, you have "earth tremor" and you can upgrade to either add damage or add area of effect, or even have fissure so those one-hit moves otherwise handicap your usual damage output. I think it'd add more difference between pokémon "builds" Second, struggle - though it's unlikely, if you only invested in one move, you could run out of PP, to ensure that pokémon could still do something, would you still have struggle be an option? If not, is "do nothing" an option, or is it only an option if you're out of PP. If you invested heavily in one move, and then started on another, could you struggle after using your only good move? Could struggle be an infinite PP always selectable move? Could you upgrade struggle as a pretty terrible recoil move, but one with infinite PP?

    • @Aurirang
      @Aurirang 8 днів тому

      I'd love an option of 'doing nothing'. If attacking is only detrimental (as example, against an enemy Wobuffet or if you got locked into a move) you should have the option to say 'no'. Not attacking doesn't solve your Problem and ins inherently favorable to your enemy, but it might help you play around some annoying things.

    The leveling up attack system is neat, though a thought: it reminds me of leveling up skills in Fire Emblem, which is similar in having uses/durability per map like the PP system, however it's balanced in that game by having to pay to restore durability and by (usually) having a set number of maps, so grinding is impossible (so, there are exploits, but it's not super convenient or intuitive). If something like that were implemented I think without careful consideration it would just be used for grinding

  • @james-robertc.f.9942
    @james-robertc.f.9942 Місяць тому

    I think you could have a middle ground that would work. Some more sapient pokémon like arceus grant you a fraction of their power, a smaller vessel for a time because of story reasons, but you still have "an arceus", similarly to how eternamax eternatus is the real eternatus, but you can only catch him after he's been permanently weakened. Alternatively, you could make it even harder to catch, and pokémon can't move unless they're level 100, similarly to how your pokémon can't attack zamazenta/zacian at first. Or perhaps their energy is too much for the PC, so it's released if you ever try to put it in there, so it takes a permanent spot on your team, or even the second it's let out its pokéball breaks and you'll need to catch it again - that'd be interesting if nothing else

    As a small vocab thing. I've heard a good word to use for "power creep" when not refering to mechanical power, but instead to the stakes or the "scale" of the setting/threat "scale creep", which personally I find more fitting. "Power creep" still comminicates the idea fine though

    Really good. I like it, one small change. I'd add to bug super effective damage against everything except itself and a resistance to everything I just figure it deserves it after all this time

    I am really interested in how different dual types would look like with this chart, specially how some pokemons would be buffed or nerfed with this.

    Why did you say Grass/Fire/Water was only a perfect loop starting at Gen 2?

    I would LOVE if this was real! Especially the 2.5D animation! Black and white had some of the best graphics and animation in the series
