I remember when I was a kid, I wanted grittier Pokemon battles. Discussions on the ethics of Poke-battles, explorations of the pokeball technology, etc.
I'd still love to see this, but I think there's ways to explore some really interesting concepts and philosophies in a way that makes it approachable for everyone!
Steven Universe, Avatar the Last Airbender, and Adventure Time were all huge successes in ways that surpassed anticipated age demographics BECAUSE they explore some really fascinating and nuanced topics. All the better that they did so in a way that was digestible and fun for kids!

Oh, god. When I saw the title, I was so nervous that this was going to be another smug rantsona video about how pokemon needs to be 'gritty and edgy' and totally disrespecting to the younger audiences, but I'm so pleased I was pleasantly surprised and that was not the case. You made very solid points here! I agree 100%, a more 'geared towards everyone' philosophy that focuses on story worldbuilding and doesn't treat the audience like they're stupid would improve it tenfold. Great video!

I don't think they should be made for adults. But I certainly don't like that they treat kids like they have no intelligence whatsoever

I think Pokémon brands itself as a Person very first foray into the Video Game World.
For people who never really play any kind of Video Games, they would be slow on the uptake at time or not really pay attention to Mechanics in Pokemon that requires a deeper look.
My First Pokemon Game was Platinum and when I was playing I never really bothered to learn anything much except a few type matchups. I managed to get to the Elite 4 but I only had 1 Pokemon above Level 60, my Starter Infernape, at Lvl 63.
      I had a Machoke at Lvl 44, a Roserade at Lvl 32.
Those are my Pokemon that at least remember much about.
1 is a Bibarel another is a Staraptor.
So I can understand at some point on where Pokemon puts tutorials, though agree with how tutorials can be skipped.

  • @r.f.switch5847
    @r.f.switch5847 2 роки тому +19

I think an option to skip tutorials would help, since many more experienced players already know how to catch pokemon, know how to run and get pokeballs, and understand most of the types and such.

i think an option to skip dialogue all together is highly needed, the sheer amount of time wasted going through half-cutscenes is mind numbing in more modern entries

Pokemon has this charm to it that makes you feel at home and comfortable, especially for returning players. I also believe pokemon shouldn't exclusively be made for adults because one beauty about this series is how it really connects generations. There should be options though, where maybe you explore the life of the criminal masterminds in pokemon like Giovanni and Cyrus, where you investigate with Looker. Maybe more mature DLC's like being in a nightmare-ish state when in the darkrai mission. And I think a aspect of gaming altogether from the marketing side, although I have no data to prove this, is that games made for adults really attract younger people because they want that thrill of being an adult, and games made for children attract adults because they want something simple without major consequences. Your videos are great btw, hope these blow up! Very thought provoking

    Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Developers: We created a world where people of all ages go to the school.
    Me: Sounds promising
Developers: Even the adults where the same uniforms and exist all over the place.
Me: So I can play as an adult now?
Developers: You need to move in with your mom for plot reasons.
Me: I’m skeptical about that “need,” but Unova snd Kalos had later teenage characters, so that’s an option, right?
Developers: Your friends in game look like teenagers.
    Me: And?
    Developers: You’re a kid.
    Me: WTF?!?
    Developers: Can’t please everyone.
Me: You absolutely can. You just need height and age options.
Developers: Small game studio. Please understand.
    Me: 😐

I would say that it requires a change in mindset. Kids aren't idiots after all and should be engaged not patronized. Also just because your hearts were shattered a little by some loud ungrateful folks in gen 5 doesn't mean you have the excuse to no longer put effort into your product. The surrounding anime and card game could very easily adjust their schedule and priorities to lesson the burdens on the game developers.
I would say that Arceus isn't a good step which is only made worse with gen 9 being revealed soon afterwards. It is more copying Zelda's homework to chase the open world obsession instead of evolving its gameplay. It is never a good idea to toss away a system (the route system in this case) that could naturally be improved upon and evolved in exchange for a new system that you have no experience with. What's more is that the swap to 3D only made Gamefreak's limitations all the the more apparent. They need to find themselves and the world they created as well as being willing to listen if they don't want the franchise to crumble in upon itself. Likewise people do need to understand what they are asking.

The Wild Zone system of Sw/Sh was the first and frankly best implementation of the open world, and that's saying something, given the... Mixed response to the game as a whole (as far as I know). Beyond that, Game Freak simply cannot implement the open world. S/V was the frankly worst Pokemon game yet, being released like a AAA game from Bethesda. Frankly, Pokemon has grown too large for its own good, and it's already tripped up a few times. It only remains which fall breaks something.

    • @andresmarrero8666
      @andresmarrero8666 10 місяців тому +1

@@Joel-qo6gt the wild zone wasn't really that great. It was bland, had no landmarks or anything to explore, pokemon just popped into existence, and the weather changed so often an drastically that it is ridiculous. They really should have stuck to evolving the route system because they understood that one. I do agree that it only a matter of time until the camel's back is broken unless they change course.

@@andresmarrero8666 Ah, I must have implied something I didn't mean. I meant to say that the Wild Zone was the best implementation of an open world Game Freak has managed, without passing judgement on its actual quality. Sorry if that lead you away from my argument. Well I have two main ideas of how to fix this stagnation of the Pokemon franchise. The first one is obvious, treat your child audience with respect, give them mechanics that are pretty basic to understand but leave enough room to experiment with those mechanics, give them a story that respects their intelligence, put in nuanced topics, and don't put in something because you think they're too stupid or impatient. And idea two which is a more controversial one is hiring some of the fans to work on the games. Like I said this is a controversial take as the only franchise I can think of that implemented this successfully or at least more positive than a mixed bag would be the Transformers franchise as on one hand while there will be things that would be considered as fandom injokes littered throughout the property would come off as blatant pandering and well jerking off to itself, in good cases it would help breathe new life into the franchise and a new perspective on what made their games good. Plus with pokemon likely being the inspiration for many creative types that wound up doing professional work else where with a few likely being trained in game design they could directly work on the game to make better character designs and optimize how the game runs.

I've always thought a new format of game play is needed. Ever since I first was introduced to pokemon via the Anime, I was fascinated about be a pokemon master, but the games never fulfilled that fantasy in the way I'd envisioned it. Cause it never felt like I was reliving moments of the series. It was never satisfied me the way I hoped and over the years the games left me wanting more, the older I get (now in my 30"s the reality is I probably will never get what I want in a pokemon game. No I don't think it should solely be targeted for adults, as it's something that people of all ages should enjoy.
I feel like the should change the game play format into more of an action based RPG, but as in a retelling/ revision of what the anime capture. But in a more mature sense forming your on pathway in becoming the pokemon master your ment to be.

The mainline should stay for kids, to teens, although it should be more difficult and have more customization.
Side games like Legends or others should be more mature and maybe tackle deeper themes and more complex mechanics, that way Pokémon can test out what sticks and what doesn’t.

Better story and character writing (including NPC especially) would go a long way for me, just… something to make the world lived in. Nowadays, I don’t even speak to NPC because they only have « Pokémon are humans’ best friend » to say. Talk about shallow. It feels like they’re just another ad. Extra world building details and more complex ecosystems would be great too (as that appeals to my field of study, aha)

I think the Pokémon games have really been pushing the limits of its E-rating lately, even using certain words you would never see in an older Pokémon game. Not to mention there was that one trial in Sun and Moon that was riddled with innuendos. There's also the fact that Pokémon isn't as popular with children as it used to be, and actually seems to be more preferred by older people. At this point, TPCi and Game Freak should focus on making the game a bit more mature, mature enough to at least give it a T-rating, since many RPGs started off as family-friendly (Final Fantasy's first few games are rated E, but now the franchise's most recent stuff is M-rated). At this point, Pokémon is being held back by trying to keep its E-rating. Becoming T-rated worked for LoZ, Metroid, and StarFox. Speaking of the T-rated franchises, Nintendo should start trying to get Metroid and Fire Emblem to delve into M-rated territory.

They could probably do well with 2 separate target audiences. 1 set of games for kids and another for adults. They’d just need to add a T rating (equivalent to PEGI 16) series of games
Edit: T is the most I think they’d successfully do. M rated games are already kinda controversial. Especially if it was a game based on a kid’s games but changed to be more appealing to teenagers and adults

Really enjoying this channel so far, but I don't buy that TPCI and GF wouldn't stoop to unethical business practices. I mean, even in gen 1, the entire goal of the game was to complete the pokedex, which was impossible with only the one cartridge. From the start, GF has prioritized money over ethics, just like every other major corporation, they aren't anything special. They can get away with this because they're THE monster-collecting game.

The whole Pokémon franchise is getting even scummier, too. And at a blinding pace, I might add.
Raid passes in GO just suffered a price hike. Pokémon Masters is releasing new limited character gachas more frequently. People just paid $30 for that glitchy barebones DLC for SV. And the worst offender is Pokémon TCG Classic: $400 for a novelty playset of retro cards you can't even use in official play.

I personally found pokemon sword and shield to be my favourites in the series because my opertunity to play them was as an adult. They were the first in the series that felt like they respected my time, there was no grind and active hunting was limited. As a adult it felt like the time it took to play was very reasonable. Would I like a mature story line? Sure! But storyline has never felt like pokemons strength, and it's not why I play the games.

At this point, NPCs should do more than keep up with your level. If you are winning too much, they should over level you. Pokémon Yellow had a similar idea where your rival’s Eevee evolves based on which battles you win against him and which battles you lose.
