Functionality wise, I think the Luncheon Kingdom from Odyssey is a lava/volcano level, not only is a rocky terrain surrounded by a scalding hot lake, it features lava bubbles enemies that live in said lake and its main feature, food aside, is a massive volcano. Similarly, Autumn levels I think should just be counted along the rest of the Forest/Jungle levels.

I feel like the Easton Kingdom was meant to be a beach world, given that it’s based on Easter Island. Which would push the level up above 100, but wouldn’t change its ranking

If I was directing a 2D Super Mario game, I would use the following themes for its worlds and levels. World 1: Urban (Park, City, Construction Site, Skyscraper, Shopping Mall, Museum) World 2: Tropical (Beach, Coral Reef, Rainforest, Desert Oasis, Savanna, Spiny Forest) World 3: Industry (Factory, Power Plant, Sewers, Junkyard, Plastic Ocean, Oil Platform) World 4: Volcanic (Ash, Sand Dune, Acid Lake, Lava, Dead Forest, Magma) World 5: Haunted (Graveyard, Forest, Amusement Park, Shipwrecks, Hospital, Mansion) World 6: Food (Cheese Desert, Spicy Volcano, Milk Valley, Ice Cream Lake, Chocolate Mountain, Candy Mine) World 7: Winter (Forest, Frozen Lake, Ice Cave, Mountain, Tundra, Christmas Town) World 8: Space (Launch Base, Orbital Station, Satellites, Asteroid Belt, Rainbow Road, Moon)

I'm curious what the math looks like if you only take into account the theme only appearing period instead of counting individual levels. That way stars and moons don't aritifically inflate the numbers.

I’m suprised the developer-made “games” in Super Mario Maker 3DS and Super Mario Maker 2 didn’t count, personally. *Especially* the 3DS levels.

Underground Hands down, Underground theme and level is the one consistent song that is in levels While the SMB classic song is audible in some songs, it's either brief or in a side quest or in toad houses Underground theme and song atays the same in every game (SMW however changes everything)

You missed size levels as an uncommon level theme. While not really present in modern titles, Super Mario Land 2's Macro Zone, Super Mario Bros 3's Giant Land and Super Mario 64's Tiny Huge Island are worlds with that specific theme.

Did I misunderstood the intro, or did Galaxy worlds only contribute one point each??? Their point count should be equal to their number of stars, just like the other 3d games except odyssey.

I was actually hoping this might be a round-up of the themes. That would make a great follow-up video, showing and discussing the themes and rounding up all the levels that used them.

I get that they're not actually new levels, but it feels weird to say the autumn theme didn't reappear until Galaxy when beating the Special stages in World turns THE ENTIRE GAME into autumn mode. It's honestly one of the wilder secrets in the series.

i appreciate mentioning all of the bottom themes, because they kinda form their own tiering in a smaller bracket.

I get that you only included games with "Super Mario" in the title, but I do feel that games like Yoshi's Island and Super Princess Peach should have been included, and especially Super Luigi U should count. That said, that's a nitpick that I don't think would have affected the overall ratings. Still, very cool video

I just imagine all of the SMB1 themes going out to dinner after the winners were announced to celebrate the castle and ground themes, the autumn theme would also be there. Since they are the oldest, I just imagine them as kind old grandparents.

Since you said that the beach/seaside theme got a whole game dedicated to it, I would argue that the haunted house theme also had a whole game dedicated to it: Luigi’s Mansion.

I was about to write that: out of fairness, Mario Odyssey's worlds should have been counted more. If 64 and Sunshine each get one point per star, that's 120 points per game. Mario Odyssey has 880 moons, which means it's only getting 88 points in total. If it scored the same number of total points as 64 and Sunshine that means each kingdom should have their total moon count divided by 7.3333 instead of 10. However, I did the Math and the only thing it changed on the list was Wood/Forest and Spooky tying each other in 9th place with 69 pts each (nice!). No other positions/ranks changed as a result. I think if you wanted to do this list in the most fair way, you could partially weight the games by how long they are, so the scores can also reflect a combination of both how many levels there are, but also roughly how long players spend in each. Based on game lengths on HowLongtoBeat.com, I suggest weightings as follows: Land - 0.5 Run - 0.6 Land 2 - 0.6 Super Mario Bros. - 0.6 Lost Levels - 0.6 Super Mario Bros. 2 - 0.6 Super Mario Bros. 3 - 0.7 Bowser's Fury - 0.7 Super Mario World - 0.8 NSMB2 - 0.9 NSMB - 1.0 NSMB Wii - 1.1 3D Land - 1.1 NSMBU - 1.2 3D World - 1.3 64 - 1.3 Sunshine - 1.4 Galaxy - 1.4 Galaxy 2 - 1.5 Odyssey - 1.7

While I agree with most of these, having space nor sky count for galaxy even though the emptiness of space is one of the core themes feels very wrong. There are certainly still athletic levels in galaxy, such as rolling gizmo, honeyclimb, puzzle plank which was even mentioned in 3d land. I was a little frustrated when the term "beyond the sky" surfaced, knowing at least a third of the galaxies have cloud filled skyboxes! Still amazing you bothered to chart and compile this list, great video!

I definitely think space can count as a theme if you consider that Mario Galaxy doesnt have that many galaxies that can be considered space-themed. Cutting out all the levels without an emphasized space theme youre left with space junk, maaaybe battle rock, uhhh thats all I can think of Combined with all Odyssey having like 2 or 3 moon worlds it should be enough to reach the threshold

I've always hated water levels unless I had the frog or penguin suit or something to actually make navigating the water better. Even sunshine, the game about water btw has some of the worst swimming controls in the series. Sunshine on foot though is pretty amazing.
