Honestly that makes me think about how much I'd love to see Neo bowser city or something of the sort realized as a 2D Mario level I love a lot of Mario Kart tracks from a design standpoint
Donkey Kong 98 kinda does that. After the first 4 "donkey kong arcade" levels it jukes you and the first world is the city. Not quite a standard mario game. Set your emulator to Super Gameboy mode for full color.
Really interesting video! While watching, I was considering these themes in context of the one 2D Mario platformer not otherwise featured in this video - Super Princess Peach. That game's worlds are all pretty strict with their themeing and while none of them are unique, it's got a good mix of common and uncommon. There's the obligatory Grasslands 1st world and Castle last world as well as the Sky theme. However, it also has Forest and Volcano themes as well as a dedicated Ghost House world and the ultra rare 2D Beach.
See when I saw "Level Theme" I thought you meant music. So while I definitely enjoyed the video I now have an amount of unsated curiosity that probably won't go away for awhile.
i would assume that the most common would either be the super mario bros ground theme or underground theme because of how many times those two are remixed in other games
When you said that Forest was the only theme on the list to not be the theme of a Super Mario 64 course, I thought the Castle theme somehow didn't make the cut. I didn't realize Whomp's Fortress was said representation until you outright stated that Castles, Fortresses, and Towers combined were the number 1 spot. For some reason that never occurred to me, despite how much sense it makes.
This video is interesting by itself but What about expanding it further What is the most common theme on the RPGs + kart franchises? Im whole heartly betting on grass lands because there aint much castles on the rpg side and there is like 2 sky maps on kart and 1 sky in the rpgs
This is the type of video that you didn't thought you needed
I wish an 2D Mario would use a city/ubran/highway/skyscraper as a world! Similar to how Super Mario Odyssey did with New Donk City!

I was honestly surprised at the Castle ending up first but the more i think about it, yeah jt does make the most sense

I'd love to see a video like this for the kart series and RPGs
17:19 "Only theme with an entire game dedicated to it!"
*Cough Cough* Space Theme *Cough Cough* Both Galaxy Games.

One thing we all remember from NSMBW, “BAH BAH!”
Definitely would have thought grassland and probably desert were more common than castle
