Interesting thing about Ratooeys are that they're actually related to Throphers from Super Mario RPG. The Japanese name for Ratooeys: Mokomoko, is derived from Thropher's Japanese name: Mukumuku. In the remake, Chapter 6's concept art even includes an early design of the Ratooey Businessman that depicts him as a Thropher.
My headcanons for some of the "unknown" races! Flurrie is a Ty-foo, the cloud creatures from later 3D games. She has similar lips, body build, and blows wind. Also, 3D World has a level called "Ty-Foo Flurries." Ishnail is a hybrid of a Koopa and a Bubblainian, the snail race from Mario Odyssey. Cortez is a Tostarenan, the Spanish macabre skulls from Odyssey. The green-headed bartenders are Beanish from Superstar Saga. Mr. Hoggles from Glitzville is from the same sapient pig race as Wizpig (Diddy Kong Racing) or Professor Chops (DK Returns).
Poddles and Flavio are p much confirmed beanish as the former brews some of the famous coffee from the bean kingdom and the latter at one point wants a bottle of Chuckola Cola also from there.
I personally like the diversity many of the older paper mario games had, with both familiar species and some new ones, they also made a few of them diverse in appearance from each other.
The official strategy guide even says "Do your best Olimar impression" when your next objective is the 100-Jabbi squad, so, yeah. The similarity was not lost on Nintendo Power.
I love the Shaman, like Merluvlee, Merlon and Merlee across the games, they are so cool and offer great gameplay services to the player. Rowf and Rhuff are cool, Flowers like Petunia, Rosie and Lily have interesting personalities and the Star Kids like Twink are good as well and these are just examples of the first game.
maybe the reason why Punio wasn't made a partner is simply because they could not think of a moveset for him (cause to be fair, how much can Puni's really do?) ((also I guess Shadows don't count? you know, Vivian, Beldam and Marilyn))
It's kinda sad to me that we never saw all of these creatures in other Mario games. Like Imagine how they would look like in 3D. Would be so interesting to see!

I think it's worth mentioning the Whispering Woods trees from The Origami King. They're essentially the only notable new species in the game, and include a bunch of random trees, as well as Ol' Grandsappy (Sweet Sap Loggins) and the Sap Sisters.

The Shamans were a species introduced in Super Mario RPG. Although, their importance to the Paper Mario series shouldn't be overlooked and I do agree that they should've been mentioned.
Considering Square Enix developed SMRPG and the physical and character similarities, im wondering if they were slant references to the original Black Mage. (Who, showed up to play Basketball and other sports with Mario and pals more than once actually)
10:43 I believe the Cragnons are also based on the original Apple Mac logo, which was a Picasso inspired, square face with the same color scheme as the Cragnons. I believe this is an inspiration for them because Super Paper Mario has several other digital media references, so it makes sense that would be one of them.
At the very least, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems should have incorporated the many races of Super Mario Odyssey into Paper Mario: The Origami King, just like how the Piantas of Super Mario Sunshine found their place in TTYD as the Mafia.

You don't even have to get crazy with new races. Hell I loved how 64 made the Toads unique from obvious ones like the Master and Tayce T. to more subtle traits like glasses for intelligence on Russ T.

They'd be easy to cover, they're just tall Shy Guys, but they're definitely original to the series, and unlike Shy Guys they actually talk
Bandits are not in fact original to the series, they were enemies in the first Yoshi's Island who stole Baby Mario off His back or would steal his coins.

TTYD on Switch is just a remaster, not a remake. All Nintendo did was update the Gamecube code and pretty up game assets instead of R&D an entire game from scratch. TTYD Switch is copy/pasted assets right down to several character animations, environment geometry, game script, and even some glitches are identical. People have known this since the game released; it's not a secret.

Nah the Shangri-Spa Toads are wearing costumes. It's blatantly obvious in their back sprite that the wings are attached artificially.
They're still worth a mention, but he probably should've highlighted the tree people or the Vellumentals since those are more obviously original.
